Amazon.com essential recording

There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars legendary.......2007-05-17

I purchased this album to replace the one on LP. If you are a person who enjoys true southern rock , you shouldn't be without a copy of this one. Some of this work is at a level you will never hear again. Absolutely superb!

5 out of 5 stars Duane, We Hardly Knew Ye.......2007-04-01

A spectacular collection of live jamming from the Brothers. IMHO Duane is the greatest lead guitar player ever. Hendrix was a spectacular virtuoso who could do things that no other player could. Clapton and the other contenders, tremendous technically, but Duane was in a league of his own in being able to communicate with his axe. To hear lead guitar at its best, go no further than this magnificent set!

4 out of 5 stars Great live album but not the best out there.......2007-03-04

I've always been a fan of blues oriented rock music- especially live recorded music. This album is exceptional, no doubt, although I have to disagree with some of the previous reviews. I used to own this cd but gave it up after giving it a few tries. After reading these reviews I gave it another try. The sound quality is great and the performance is great too, but not the ultimate live album I was expecting. If you want to get some excellent electrified live blues rock music I'd recommend Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour or Ten Years After's Live at Fillmore East. Bottom line, buy The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East but don't expect it to be the best live album you've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Is there some way I can give it more than 5 stars?.......2007-01-12

It's almost pointless to add another 5-star review to this album. This is way beyond the categories of "Southern rock" (Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet belong in that dubious realm) and "blues rock" (hate to sound politically incorrect, but there's never been a blues performer or band that's even come close to what these guys were capable of). Duane Allman's slide guitar squalls with the kind of expression that will put the fear of God into you and make you forget, for a moment, who Jimi Hendrix was.

Kiddies, this is what rock concerts used to be. Never mind! This is too real for you. Go back to blogging about how great fill-in-the-blank is.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album, but there's more!.......2007-01-11

This Live album has been the standard for all others to be measured by for over 30 years. Every musician is at the top of his game. Duane Allman's guitar playing still reveals new thrills after 3 decades of listening. Dickey Betts does a great job of keeping up. (To tell them apart, Duane's guitar is a little smoother and seems to sing.) This recording still feels fresh and vital. You do not need to be a southern rock or blues fan to enjoy the music. However, do yourself a favor and opt for double The Fillmore Concerts instead. The recording mix is a little more balanced and there are some alternate takes that pack the discs with over 130 minutes of music. If you agree (and you most likely will) that this is the best live album, then the additional music on the additional disc is the second best live labum. With the extended album you will get a deeper appreciation for a band that played until the sun rose. This is not an album to be mixed into an iPod shuffle. Relax, sit down with your favorite beverage and immerse yourself. The music will take you away.

If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-08

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST RE-RELEASED ISSUE OF THE LEGENDARY FILLMORE EAST CONCERTS TO DATE........2007-03-26

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic live Two-CD Deluxe Edition set album entitled "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST" by one of Rock's most greatest legendary bands ever. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Jacksonville, Florida's pride and joy's, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT FILLMORE EAST" was originally released in 1971 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Capricorn Records label. This new special Two-CD Deluxe Edition was originally re-released in 2003 on the Mercury Records Label in association with The Island Def Jam Music Group which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Corp. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary live album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND are truly one of the early pioneers of Southern Rock music joining the ranks of legendary bands such as LYNYRD SKYNYRD, THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND and THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND. When brother's Gregg Allman on organ, piano and vocals and the late great Duane Allman on lead and slide guitars met up and joined forces with Dickey Betts on lead guitar, the late great Berry Oakley on bass, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson on drums, congas and timbales and Butch Trucks on drums and tympani, the line-up would be complete and THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND would be born to Rock. The band would release two albums prior to "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT FILLMORE EAST" album to critically high acclaim raves. But it was live in concert that THE ALLMAN BROTHERS band would really get the lead out and shine resulting in raising the south and making it proud. In my opinion, "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT THE FILLMORE EAST" is one of the greatest concerts and live albums ever recorded. This legendary concert is another one of Rock's greatest moments during one of Rock's finest hours. It is also my opinion that this legendary concert stands as a true testament of the greatness and musical genius of six extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was indeed, ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music speak for itself and do all of the talking. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT LIVE ALBUM THAT SHOULD BE PLAYED EXTREMELY LOUD. DISC ONE of this legendary live album begins with the blasting Southern Blues Rocker "Statesboro Blues," the fast paced Southern Rocker "Trouble No More," the blistering killer Southern Rocker "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," the incredible Elmore James rendition Blues classic "Done Somebody Wrong," the slow and beautiful T-Bone Walker rendition Blues classic "Stormy Monday," the legendary groundbreaking Southern Blues Rocker "One Way Out," the thirteen minute slow soothing and beautiful Southern Rocker "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed," the breathtaking nineteen minute Southern Rocker "You Don't Love Me" and the forever amazing ALLMAN BROTHERS trademark mild Southern Rocker "Midnight Rider." END OF DISC ONE.

DISC TWO begins with the guitar screeching and blasting "Hot 'Lanta," the twenty-three minute merciless killer Southern Rocker "Whipping Post," the unbelievable thirty-four minute Jazz and Southern Rocker "Mountain Jam" and the slow Blues number "Drunken Hearted Boy." May I also add that Duane Allman's blistering slide guitar playing is the true stuff of legend. Also, both Duane Allman's and Dickey Betts' blistering guitar licks and riffs were sizzlin' red hot and on fire during the recording of these live shows. YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS CONCERT TO BELIEVE IT.

Overall, this is one hell of a legendary live album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND fan or a devout music collector. As for the newcomers or new beginners to the sound and music of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, I would definitely buy this album. YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic live album to own a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary live album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great live album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST" would be released to highly critical acclaim and be hailed as one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. At this point in the band's career, all was well in THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND until tragedy struck. Following the release of their live album, guitarist Duane Allman would die in a motorcycle accident on 29 October 1971. To make matters worse, the following year, bass player Berry Oakley would also die in a motorcycle accident on 11 November 1972. However, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND would persevere and carry on in order to keep the memory and legend alive of both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND have continued to release new albums and perform to sell out audiences the world over to this very day. In 1995, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND received the highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame. With that in mind, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND has left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you late great Duane, Gregg, Dickey, late great Berry, Jaimoe and Butch. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. DUANE ALLMAN LIVES. BERRY OAKLEY LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND RULES. R.I.P DUANE ALLMAN, Born 20 November 1946, Died 29 October 1971 at age 25. Also R.I.P BERRY OAKLEY, Born 4 April 1948, Died 11 November 1972 at age 24. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars The Allman Brothers Band at their peak!!!.......2007-02-14

"The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East" has been long regarded as one of the greatest live albums of all time. Indeed by the time 1971 rolled around, the ABB was on a musical roll honening their musical chops to perfection. When they hit the Fillmore East for the recording of this album, the band was definitely on fire.
The original release of the "Fillmore East" album (which is still available as a single CD) includes seven of the best tracks from these concerts. Later on, more music from the Fillmore concerts showed up on subsequent albums and compilations - notably 1972's "Eat A Peach". Now, with the release of the two-disc "Deluxe Edition", all of the music released from these historic performances are together in one place. While this shouldn't be taken as a complete concert (which by the way is not), it's truly the music that matters.
The Allmans' blues chops are in full force here as represented by the opening five tracks - among them being "Statesboro Blues", "Trouble No More" and "Stormy Monday". Duanne Allman's slide guitar work is at its best here and brother Gregg's soulful vocals never falter.
As the music progresses, so does the flawless musicianship within the band. The 13-minute "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and the 19-minute jams of "You Don't Love Me" offer a glimpse of what's to come in the second half of the collection. By the time we get to disc two, the band is smokin' with the instrumental tour-de-force "Hot'lanta" and the relentless 23-minute concert staple "Whipping Post" which leads directly into the monumental 33-minute "Mountain Jam". As mentioned above, the Deluxe Edition does not present a complete concert but the way it's sequenced creates the illusion that the band were warming up at the beginning just to pull out all the stops at the end. Honestly, by the end of this edition, they certainly do.
The sound quality of the Deluxe Edition is amazing with an extra added crack to the drums and bite to the guitars. The packaging is pretty impressive as well with several great photos of the band onstage and some brief but insightful liner notes from music critic Dave Thompson.
Whether or not the Deluxe Edition of The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East is definitive over the original album is a matter of opinion and preference. However, one cannot deny that regardless of which edition you buy, there is some flawless and amazing music here no matter what.

5 out of 5 stars Should be more than 5 stars- greatest live album of all time.......2006-12-10

First off, I'm not a kid, I just don't want to get an account
And second, this is a great album, one of the greatest live albums of all time.
The album alternates between long jams (Whipping Post, Mountain Jam, You Don't Love Me, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed) and shorter intense songs (Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Hot 'lanta, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out)
The original Fillmore Album had just seven songs, Statesboro Blues, Done Somebody Wrong, Stormy Monday, Elizabeth Reed, You Don't Love Me, Hot 'lanta, and Whipping Post. All of them showcase the amazing guitar abilities of both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. On "Whipping Post" each of them take a long solo that slowly builds to a furious crescendo, with Duane especially seeming to pull freakish notes out of nowhere. One of the few songs that he actually plays with straight guitar, rather than his normal slide guitar.
"Statesboro Blues" is one of the best examples why he was a great slide guitarist. It opens this album and the original. Not a studio song on any album, it was nonetheless a concert favorite. Rolling Stone magazine called it Duane's signature song on guitar in their 100 Greatest Guitarists magazine (they ranked him #2) If you're not really sure what the slide guitar should sound like, listen to this beatiful, fiery rendition.
"Stormy Monday" is a slow blues that showcases not only the dual guitarists' superpowers, but Greg Allman's blues sensibilities. He sings this blues classic with conviction, and this song has one of Dickey Betts' best guitar solos.
"Hot 'lanta" is a great instrumental with great instrumental work from everyone in the band, including the two drummers, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks.
"Done Somebody Wrong" is solid as well, a song that really characterizes what the Allman Brothers were all about.
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a 13 minute instrumental written by Dickey Betts. The opening lines of the song are especially mesmerizing, with Duane and Dickey each turning in mindblowing guitar solos, with Duane especially ripping off notes like they were the last notes he would ever play.
"You Don't Love Me" is a long 19 minute boogie jam. Out of all the longer jams, this is my least favorite, but it is still quite excellent. I do think however it should have stopped about 7-8 minutes in. But it still very good, just not the best on the album.
The Deluxe edition of Fillmore East tacks on extra tracks from the concerts that originally appeared on Eat a Peach, Dreams, and Anthology. The notable addition is the 33 minute "Mountain Jam." Some people might dismiss it as way too long, and I do admit you really have to be in the mood to listen to this song. But it is still a classic example of how the Allman Brothers could sustain a song for a really long time. This song was so long it took up 2 record sides on "Eat a Peach." It contains a really cool double drum solo, an earthquake like bass solo, and really cool guitar solos. One of Duane's trademarks was making his guitar sound like a crying bird, and he does this quite nicely on this track.
"Trouble No More" and "One Way Out" also came from "Eat a Peach" Like "Done Somebody Wrong" I think "Trouble No More" really epitomizes the Southern rock sound of the Allman Brothers Band. "One Way Out" has a nice funky little riff.
"Midnight Rider" is a solid version of one of Greg Allman's most famous songs. "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" is rockin, and one of the encores, "Drunken Hearted Boy," is haunting, eerie, and awesome.
All in all, get the Deluxe Edition of the Allman Brothers At Fillmore East. YOu won't be sorry. Duane Allman was truly one of the greatest, underrated guitarists of all time. All 6 of them were great. Berry Oakley-Bass guitar, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks- Drums and Percussion, Duane Allman- Lead and Slide Guitars, Dickey Betts-Lead Guitar, Greg Allman- Vocals and Keyboards

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff from the Allmans.......2006-07-31

For those who may have purchased this music when it was first released as an LP or cassette, you'll want this CD with much crisper detail in the delivery. The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore is a classic. Any collector will have a CD version of Sgt. Pepper, the Best of the Dave Clark 5, and others but lovers of southern rock put this at top of the list, you'll need to have this live collection from the Allmans. Anyone who saw them in concert, when all the original members were alive, know that 'impromptu" changes in the songs were a trademark of their concerts. Even the longer version songs are a treat to listen to and remain fresh without boredom. This is definitely the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest..........2005-11-14

Robert Johnson would have been proud... if not a little shocked at how far real southern rock has come since his time.

While there might not be anything new as far as content goes, this CD is the best compilation of all those songs you know and love from The Allman brothers. If you are either new to the Allman Brothers or do not own the other Fillmore releases, this CD is a must buy. Despite some negative reviews regarding the deluxe edition, it sure does have some enhanced sound so this is the CD to buy if you don't own the songs already somehow.

Key songs on the CD include Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (which sounds ten times better than any other release I've heard of it for some reason), and Midnight Rider. Great songs for a great compilation... a bit pricy, I know, but well worth it I assure you!!!

Probably one of the greatest music compilations ever... certainly the best as far as southern rock goes. The second CD is much shorter than the first but includes some extended songs - for example the well-known extended live version of Whipping Post (a song which is downright amazing).

Amazing stuff, much better reviews can be found on the site from music enthusiasts with much more experience in southern rock than I have but all and all this CD was well worth giving my 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection; Beautiful Piano.......2005-09-09

BEGINNINGS by Fernando Ortega is a 2 cd set featuring selections of some of the "early" recordings of this great pianist primarily drawn from four albums: Meditations of the Heart, Meditations of the Heart Encore, Hymns and Meditations, and Night of Your Return. While many of these cds are available for purchase online, it is nearly impossible to find them in your typical Christian music store.

Of the thirty-four songs on the album, seventeen are instrumental.

Songs from Meditations of the Heart include: Sacrifice of Praise, Living Water, Morning Star, Family, I Love To Praise Your Name, and As For Us. (Six of the ten songs on the album)

Songs from Meditations of the Heart Encore include: I Remember Well, It's Your Love, Tossed On The Wind, Teach Me Thy Way, and Creation Sings. (Five of the eleven songs on the album).

Hymns and Meditations: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Near The Cross, Softly and Tenderly, Nothing But The Blood, and I Need Thee Every Hour/Just As I Am/ Come Ye Sinners Medley, What Wondrous Love Is This, Con Que Pagaremos, Brethren We Have Met To Worship, Sacred Head Now Wounded, and Nearer My God To Thee. (Which appears to be the entire album of Hymns and Meditations)

It also seems to include all the songs on Night Of Your Return as well. (My Song Is Love Unknown, Praise To The Lord, The Almighty, Night Of Your Return, Mi Abuelito, Chimayo, Jesus, Lover of My Soul, Here Is Love, Road Song, Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, This is My Father's World, and Green Pastures.)

With two complete albums and two partial albums, BEGINNINGS is well worth the price and is a great addition for any Fernando Ortega fan's collection.

This piano music is wonderful. His style simple but beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic !.......2003-03-31

Vengerov has no limit to his technique.beautiful tone, excellent intonation, smart interpretation, and thrilling virtuosity, hardly describe this cd.Itamar Golan also does a very good job as an accompanist, and one cannot make any objections to his level of music making.A Brilliant recording made by an unforgetable artist!

3 out of 5 stars he didn't read the music very carefully..........2002-09-23

A lot of this CD is very impressive- Vengerov clearly has his technique under control, and the Paganini is very well-executed, making it sound easy.

I feel that he's pretty far off the mark with the Messiaen, though. He must not have spent very much time learning this piece, since both the Theme (of the "Theme et variations) and the final section of the piece are played at exactly twice the printed tempo! This completely changes the character of the piece to something that's very different from the meditative quality that the correct tempo markings imply. There are also a few wrong notes- small details, but it does make a difference, considering the emphasis Messiaen placed on harmony. There's a very good Naxos recording of this piece (with the Amici ensemble, Scott St. John, violin) that's worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars A charming CD of small violin pieces........2000-07-20

Although Vengerov has had his up's and down's, this CD is truely a triumph for him. Vengerov's playing is in top form and he really does each piece justice. The best thing about this CD is the pieces Vengerov picked to record. This is the perfect CD of charming violin miniatures. I haven't yet found a better CD of these sorts of pieces. I especially like the Caprice Basque by Sarasate and the variations by Paganini. But all the songs are very captivating. If you're looking for a good CD of "itsy bitsies", as Heifetz called them, this is it. It's a great gift for someone who isn't really into classical music or for someone who is too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent grouping of small violin pieces.......1999-07-15

The pieces on this cd are all of the most delightful quality. Vengerov plays them all with beautiful execution and interpretation. One of my favorite cd's. I've yet to find another violin cd that groups together such wonderful little pieces in such a good way!

5 out of 5 stars Liona Boyd.......2007-03-26

It's interesting, I think, to note how Miss Boyd's style and technique seem to polarise the current reviews for her album "The Spanish Album". I certainly wasn't aware that Miss Boyd is regarded as "a light weight" in the classical guitar world.

I can only say that as a humble amateur classical guitarist, I remain an avid admirer of her interpretation of several of the standard classics on this album.

Her virtuosity in Gran Jota has already been referred to: may I also single out the sweet expressiveness of her playing in Capricio Arabe (which I suggest cannot be matched by any other modern recording)as well as the fascinating discords in Asturias.

1 out of 5 stars Liona is the Queen of Classical Guitar Technique?????.......2006-01-20

Yes, and I'm Clark Kent, reporter for a small town daily. Liona Boyd achieved her fame through non musical means. As a musician she leaves a great deal to be desired. Her technique is modest. Her interpretive skills are nonexistent. Proclaiming her "queen of classical guitar technique" is only revealing of one's ignorance. I only wish there was a zero star rating.

If you wish to hear the real McCoy I recommend Martha Masters.

4 out of 5 stars GIMME A BREAK!!.......2005-03-01

I had never heard of this chick until I started Flamenco lessons. All I can say is WOW!!!

1 out of 5 stars Liona? Please..........2001-06-10

Boyd is, in fact, considered a lightweight in the world of classical guitar. Sure, she's sold recordings, but not anything worth listening to. If you're looking for excellent female classical guitarrists, look for Antigoni Goni and Sharon Isbin. Don't waste your ears on Boyd.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-24

This is a great CD for any trombonist's collection...As was mentioned before, the Blue Bells, Czardas and Hindemith are all first rate. The largest contribution to the very small collection of quality trombone recordings out there, however, is the much overlooked and extremely beautiful Sulek Sonata. The artist does such a first rate job presenting such a wonderful piece of music, it's worth the entire cost of the CD in one track.

5 out of 5 stars wow this is amazing.......2006-03-09

I am quite impressed by this recording. Christian Lindberg gives a flawless performance of Flight of the Bumblebee, Bluebells of Scotland, and the Hindemith Sonate. This should be in every trombonist's CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars CD shows many possibles for pros and student alike.......2000-06-27

This CD shows Christians virtuosity yet it also proves that the trombone is capable of more than slow ballads. Ive studied with Christian and I can tell you though this CD seems to be as hard as it comes there are better of his CDs. This is probably his 2nd best though. He is a master of trombone and this CD allows students and professionals to 1>Hear a real trombone sound 2>Dicover new peices 2>and also show the trombones possivilities. THIS IS A GREAT CD TO LISTEN TO AND PERFORM ALONG SIDE IN PRACTICE!

3 out of 5 stars great player, selection of music a bit disappointing.......2000-02-03

I hated to rate this a 3 stars, because the trombone playing is awesome! However, the selection of music leaves much to be desired, in my opinion. However, 2 of the selections, Flight of the Bumblebee (did he really play the trombone that fast? ), and Blue Bells of Scotland (magnificent!), are so tremendous that any trombone player should buy this CD just for those 2 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars This is a ravishingly diverse album, proving CL's Greatness!.......1999-11-16

What I love most of this album is the great diversity of styles created by the different composers of this album. My favorite songs are
1) Blue Bells
2) Csardas
3) Liesbald (or however you spell it)

Anyway, I'm playing Blue Bells of Scotland this year for my UIL solo and ensemble competition next spring, and I have found it to be immensely helpful in determining styles, etc. Of course, it is also discouraging knowing somebody could be so much better than me :) Christian Lindberg is truly a fabulous artist!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-07-23

I never thought that I'd hear a trumpet player that I could put on a par with Miles Davis...of course Miles is still God, but perhaps Hakan is a major deity?

The virtuosity of the playing on these pieces is stunning. I have to admit that on first listen I didn't really like all of the pieces; some sounded to harsh and more "jazzy" than classical (not that there's anything wrong with jazzy!)

On a second listen, though, the harshness went away and the brilliance of the playing came through.

This is a must for any trumpet player or fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording.......2005-08-06

Having heard much of Hardenberger's piccolo work, I was pleased to see that his cornet playing is equally impressive. He nails technically demanding pieces without sacrificing his beautiful sound. Arban's Norma Variations and Hartmann's piece based on Rule Britannia are never dull, and Hardenberger is accurate and virtuosic on the more modern pieces, including the Francaix Sonatine and the fiendishly difficult Maxwell Davies sonata. Every piece is superbly played, and Pontinen provides good accompaniment.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good recording as far as it goes.......2000-09-14

Janos Starker is undoubtedly on of the best cellists of our time, and his technique is effortless on all of these virtuoso selections. Not only is his execution flawless, he is one of a few artists who can make their individual styles come out beautifully in a recording. His tone is strong and compelling in all of the selections, never forced but also never obsessed with smoothing over every trace of an individual performance. As a result the recording has a wonderfully spontaneous and solid flavor. Highlights are David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody and the Falla Danse Rituelle. Unfortunately, it is true that many of these virtuoso pieces simply do not hold the listener time and time again as do, for example, the Brahms cello sonatas or the Dvorak concerto. So though you may listen to this recording many times (and get to love Janos Starker's playing in the process) also buy his recording of the Dvorak.
