An absolute joy.......2006-01-26

So many pieces on this album are jewels. "Le fille aux cheveux de lin" and "Nocturnes for Orchestra - Sirenes" are particularly heavenly. "The Sea at Dawn" has an amazing sense of freshness and motion to it and is well placed at the beginning of the CD. A few of the songs on here make excellent background music but lack memorable themes. I wish I could wake up to this CD every morning, truly.

CD review.......2003-04-06

This is a great debussy CD. This CD is my introduction to Debussy, and now debussy is one of my favorite composers. The music in here is relaxing. The performances are excellent also. One complaint, however, is there is a repeat. There are two of the same pieces on the CD. Overall, this is a great CD.

Terrific for harp and asian/water sound lovers.......2005-08-30

This is the first harp-intensive CD I have bought, purchased after hearing selections from it on my classical music station, WGMS. Its even better than I expected. I love this CD! It is a great combination of familiar music by Debussy and other selections reminiscent of the flow and play of water, some with an wonderful asian flavor. This product would be great for soft mood music, background sound for an intimate dinner, etc. If you want or need only one harp CD, make this the one!!!

Tapping into the "mythological mystique" of the harp, and having "been mesmerized by water" since she "was a little girl," Yolanda Kondonassis compels our attention and praise with her atmospheric and flowing recital of "liquid thoughts," the aim of which is to musically combine and conceptualize conscious and subconscious images of brooks, rivers, oceans and imaginary universes of water. Drawing on a diverse collection of composers--- from Debussy [1862-1918] and Marcel Tournier [1879-1951] through the lesser known Michio Miyagi [1894-1956] and Alphonse Hasselmans [1845-1912] to George Rochberg [b.1918], whose own surprisingly luminous work, "Ukiyo-E," from the Japanese "Pictures of the Floating World," and, evocatively enough, the apt title of the CD is, at nearly thirteen minutes, the longest composition--- Kondonassis graces us. Her playing is subtle, caressing, fabulously impressionistic, and never less than convincing in establishing an inspired, other-worldly ambience. As well, with her own mysterious and memorable piece, "Liquid Shadows," she delves even further into moody fantasy. Due to the extraordinary ability of the harp to easily transport us to the most pleasurable of aural places, the enveloped listener is simply a captive audience, especially when the works are as remarkably meditative, reflective and soothing as they are here.

This is really a fantastically beautiful sounding CD. It is so dignified and spacey at the same time. The selections are extremely eclectic....a little Debussy...a little koto music....an orginal piece..but it all fits together and sounds very natural. If you are interested in something to listen to with the lights turned low, I don't think you can go wrong here.

hauntingly beautiful harp music.......1998-12-11

This is the most hauntingly, surreal, beautiful harp recording I have ever heard. I use it in my massage therapy practice all the time. Just perfect for relaxing to!!

One of my favorite CD's.......2005-02-08

I found this CD in of all places a Walmart.
But any relation to the ordinary stops there.
I have a considerable collection of Debussy's piano music featuring some of the greatest pianists of all time, but none is superior to this. I can only agree with most everything said in the other reviews and add that this CD provides an excellent introduction to this music.
Lipson-Gruzen (an admittedly unusual name) plays the music with an unusual boldness and emotional immediacy that completely dispels the esoteric veneer that often makes Debussy seem more obscure than he ought to.
This is a CD you will play over and over.

Great affordable intro to music of Debussy.......2000-07-30

Ms. Lipson-Gruzen performs some of Claude Debussy's best work here beautifully. The recording quality and piano sound are more than adequate, and the performances are very solid, technically impeccable, and notably expressive. One of my favorite debussy compositions has always been his classic "la fille aux cheveaux de lin" ("the girl with the flaxen hair") and it is one of my favorite pieces on this recording, with a brilliant performance. I think this CD is an exceptional value, and I feel almost anyone who enjoys music would love it. Like i said... it's a steal.

This CD provides the ideal introduction to the piano music of Claude Debussy, or for that matter, to impressionistic music in general. Ms. Lipson Gruzen has found the ideal combination of Romantic qualities; beautiful floating shimmering yet emotionally satisfying sound, with a taught sense of rhythm and classical restraint that toghether make the music a pleasure to the senses as well as to the mind. At last, Debussy that is both accessable and inspiring! The pieces she chooses are among the most appealing and characteristic as well. This is one of my "desert island" albums.

"A Thing of Beauty...".......2000-03-15

With the possible exception of Walter Giesiking's landmark early recordings, I have never heard nor hoped to have heard Debussy pianism as superbly idiomatic and expressive as is the playing on this CD. Ms. Lipson-Gruzen creates a ravishingly beautiful sonic world, one that I look forward to visiting often.

A revelation.......2000-02-02

This New York pianist has been well known and highly regarded in musical and critical circles for many years, but has made few CD's. This one was new to me. What a find! This is artistry of the highest order. Ms. Lipson-Gruzen's Debussy pianism is simply ideal; sensuous, evocative, and ravishingly beautiful in sound. After repeated listening, it continues to prove a revelation. An incredible bargin as well!

One nice collection on 2 CDs!.......2003-03-20

I one time got "Water Music of the Impressionists" after hearing Ravel's "Ondine" on the Delos sapler "Soundscapes." It had a nice sound quality, considering it's a recording made before CDs first hit the market. It was actually an early digital recording (1979!). I would've highly suggest this CD for people who likes Debussy and other such music. But then I discovered this 2 CD set, "Reflections in the Water." Here I get the 1979 recording coupled with a 1988 recording, "Night Moods." BOTH done by Carol Rosenberger on the Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand Piano. The pieces on both CDs are nicely played. Most of the pieces are good for background music.

If you want a nice collection of piano music, try "Water Music of the Impressionists" or "Night Moods." OR, why not get "Reflections in the Water." You get BOTH albums that way. I suggest that you listen to "Nigh Moods" first. Then listen to the other. You would notice the difference since they took place in different locations. I'm not necessarily saying that one is better than the other. Both CDs are very good. I don't think you could go wrong in getting that double CD set.

Oh yes, you could also get "Reverie" also by Rosenberger on the Bosendorfer. That's another nice collection.

Piano Portraits.......2006-01-30

This CD was a fabulous rendition of fantastic piano scores. I am so thankful that William Wellborn has carried on the Chopin tradition as well as other masters of the time. Wellborn's performance truly honors the masters and I am thankful that he continues to lead the charge in performing this wonderful classic music superbly. I enjoyed the entire CD and adoring Chopin so very much, would love the world to fully appreciate his music and this artist truly allows that. I think the stage is set for the future appreciation of this music for generations to come and would love to have Mr. Wellborn cut more CDs. Bravo! Bravo and thank you William!

Musical curios but much more.......2004-03-21

Percy Grainger is a distinctive figure in the history of classical music and piano playing, an odd mix of blazing talent and homespun musical naivete. From his piano transcriptions gathered here on this CD there is no doubt about his ability to get around the keyboard, or his extraordinarily wide-ranging musical tastes. His musical treatments encompass everything from William Byrd to George Gershwin, with varying degrees of success as far as taste and appropriateness are concerned, but always with captivating virtuosity and an unerring ear for effective piano sonority. One half-smiles, half-cringes at the startling harmonies in which a Dowland lute piece is clothed, for example; on the other hand, the sugar-spun embroidery he lavishes on his version of the first-act duet from Der Rosenkavalier is entirely appropriate to the original.

Piers Lane performs all of this frequently finger-breaking music with digital dexterity and loving care, though some of the more demanding passages come off as cautious rather than coruscating. There can be no doubt about the quality of the recorded sound, however, or the beautiful sounds of the Fazioli piano he uses. All in all, this particular out-of-the way corner of the repertory has been given the deluxe treatment on this CD.

First Rate Light Music.......2004-08-31

Dacades ago on FM radio I heard a medium tempo version of "Would You Like to Take a Walk?" that knocked my socks off. Simply beautiful. It took me this long to find out that it was Robert Farnon's Orchestra that performed that gem! And now, not only do I finally have it, I have also discovered more of Mr. Farnon's wonderful repertoire on these two albums.

This may be considered "Light Music" but it is certainly not boring. There are uptempo romps like "Yes, we have no Bananas" and "Blue Skys" as well as near classical beauties like "Can I Forget You?" and "Down By the River." Farnon takes full advantage of his rather sizeable orchestra which consists of strings, brass, reeds, percussion, rhythm and harp.

The cd is a nice production as well with interesting liner notes about Robert Farnon and the music per se. There are reproductions of the original album covers released both in the UK and U.S. There are also track times and composer listings, but, sadly, no mention of the orchestra members other than specific soloists. Originally the sound quality, even in 1953 and 1954 when these albums were recorded, was excellent. Fifty years has taken some of the edge off of that sound from the master tapes, but it is still very good.

Julie Rivers has become one of my favorite pianists, but I was only familiar with her original compositions and Christmas collection before I heard this CD. Her recording of the piano music of Eugenie Rocherolle clearly demonstrates why Julie has earned such wide recognition as a concert performer as well as a composer/pianist. Eugenie Rocherolle is a prolific composer who has been very active in producing collections of teaching material. The pieces that make up this recorded collection are obviously from her more advanced repertoire, and are definitely to be considered classical. Rocherolle's composing style is varied and original. Most of these pieces are short, with some recalling Satie in their brevity and abstraction. There are bursts of Gershwin as well as hints of many other 20th century composers, but the music is very personal, and Julie Rivers brings it to life with her elegant playing style.
