This delightful pastorale for two sopranos has a typical plot: lovesick shepherd (Aminta) chases nymph; commitment-phobic nymph (Fillide) rejects shepherd; shepherd pleads; nymph takes pity; shepherd rejoices; nymph feels love's sweet sorrow; they sing a final duet. Sure, the plot's trite, but Handel's music provides both beguiling melody and real emotional substance: Aminta's urgent desire and Fillide's carefree scorn for romance are palpable. The young shepherd's exuberant song of triumph may just make you dance around the room; the sensuous intertwining lines of the love duet may make you feel amorous yourself. Gillian Fisher sings Aminta with ardor, bright high notes and convincing masculine timbre. Patrizia Kwella's strong but straight-toned soprano is an acquired taste, but once you acquire it you'll be hooked. --Matthew Westphal
