Masterful recording of masterful compositions.......2007-01-19

This recording has become rare to find (in Europe), which surprises me, for I find both the compositions and the performance excellent. Especially the Sylphides, which are orchestral arrangements of some of Chopin's finest piano pieces - are heavenly. Highly recommended.

Ballet bon bons German style.......2004-06-26

Herbert von Karajan was the most recorded conductor in history. For that reason, he made a lot of records (that turned into CDs) like this one -- collections of well-known music that the public wants to hear over and over again. This group of ballet music is good, done in Karajan's typical highly chiseled style with a minimum of sentimentality. I once read a critic who called the style Karajan and Szell popularized the "school of industrial perfection", meaning every note in its place every time. That's true here, too. My favorite among these bon bons is the Tchaikovsky music from "Sleeping Beauty". Karajan is still hailed today for his later stereo version of the final Tchaikovsky troika of symphonies. Many critics put him up there with the best Tchaikovksy recordings ever. You can tell why critics were so persuaded by listening to his bleeding chuncks from "Sleeping Beauty". Not only does it contain the essential Berlin Philharmonic perfection and polish, it goes a little further than everything else on this set in terms of emotional attachment. The first two sections of the music, "Introduction. La Fee da Lilas" and "Adagio. Pas d'action" pack an enormous wallop. The final section is monumentally done by Karajan and the Berliners, surging forward in waves of sound and emotion until the listener is swept away during the crescendo in almost unconscious grandeur. I urge you to listen to this magnificent music-making and try not to develop goose flesh at the peak. This connection between perfection, music and emotion is what set Karajan apart from every other conductor in the 20th Century, and the reason he is as vivid and a larger than life figure today, 15 years after his death.

First-Rate Ballet Music.......2003-11-14

This collection of "Famous Ballet Music" from DG's mid-priced "2CD" series is truly first-rate. A lot of the credit for that goes to the man in charge of this set, Herbert von Karajan. The great conductor leads the Berlin Philharmonic through glowing highlights and suites from Offenbach's "Gaite Parisienne," Gounod's "Faust," Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" and Delibes' "Coppelia," and the complete Chopin's "Les Sylphides" and "Dance of the Hours" from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda." Of course, the pieces featured here are the types of orchestral nuggets that someone like Karajan and the Berliners could eat for breakfast while reading the paper. But Karajan really prided himself in being one of the stereo-age's best Tchaikovsky conductors, and he made several recordings of each of the three ballet suites in addition to his many Symphonic Cycles. Also, his early 1960s accounts of the Chopin and Delibes in particular (the remainder of the works were recorded in the early 1970s), are as good, if not better, than any performance I have heard. In all, this is a collection that will appeal to the casual fan and serious collector alike.

The Best Of Karajan At A Cheap Price! Wow!.......2005-08-15

Close to perfect, really, if at least one track included Beethoven's Ninth Symphony "Ode To Joy" or other Karajan-conducted slow movements from symphonies. Also if Ravel's Bolero or Debussy's La Mer were on here. This is truly an incomparable collection at the very affordable price of about 2-3 dollars. Karajan's magical interpretations of adagios are gloriously showcased. Karajan was without a doubt the greatest conductor immediately after the loss of Arturo Toscanini, who is still hailed as the number one conductor of all time. Karajan, like Toscanini, were giants of classical music, making the music such a powerful and emotional experience that it was as if they had written the pieces themselves. Karajan was so involved with the music he conducted that he was able to conduct with his eyes closed. He FELT the music and was genuinely passionate about conducting. In adagios, the more relaxed, sustained and lyrical aspects of the music is exposed as is the more graceful conducting of Karajan.

The music included here is the moving and very Italianate Intermezzo from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni. Karajan really delivers here and is a fine first track to begin with. It's followed by the elegantly-executed Barcarolle, complete with nocturnal and watery modes from the Offenbach opera, The Tales of Hoffman. The Love Theme from the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky is priceless music and Tchaikovsky really steps up the emotional impact of the work. More charming and genteel phrasing is used in the music for the ballet Les Sylphides, with music from Chopin arranged for orchestra and for the Romanza in Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

I have never heard the true "Moldau" by Smetana until I heard it here. Under Karajan's baton, the river comes alive and the journey is much more compelling. The theme for the Young Prince and Princess from Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" is simply gorgeous, full of romantic Russian-ism. Karajan takes us to the time of Holberg in Grieg's Holberg Suite in a fine interpretation of the Sarabande. Karajan conducting Dvorak's String Serenade in E major is noble. The final tracks are perhaps the most musically masterful, eventhough all the previous pieces were well-executed even if they are not bigger in scope. The Carmen music- Overture and Preludes are remarkable. Karajan is in fine form and the music is crisp, powerful and colorful. Karajan knew Carmen. How this proudly Austrian man knew how to bring out the magnetism of a French piece like Carmen is beyond me. He in fact conduced the best Carmen performances at the Salzburg Festival, the ones with Grace Bumbry and Jon Vickers in the late 60's.

Finally, the last piece is the Liebestod, the Finale from Wagner's great opera Tristan and Isolde. Now, if anything, get this cheap album for that !! You have not heard the Liebestod until you've heard it conducted by Karajan. In this recording, he is already a seasoned conductor with years of experience since his young conductor days in the 30's and 40's. Judging ffrom the cover in which his hair is white and his face is wrinkled I can discern this is a probably an 80's recording when he was in his old age (because Karajan began seriously recording for labels in the 80's most people assumed he was always white-haired). His interpretation of the Liebestod is powerful, and deeply spiritual, withou sounding affected or melodramatic. He is in full control of the music. He knew Wagner through the music. Isolde's final aria has been likened to an orgasm or to a spiritual transformation by music scholars. Karajan brings out every bit of this theory in his rendition. A young Karajan conducting the Liebestod is harder to find, but its probably preferable to go with this version since by this time he knew the Liebestod inside and out. It's breathtaking and climatic. It's the best piece of music ever and the best of Karajan's repertoire.

WONDERFUL COLLECTION................2002-03-13

Enchanting!.......2001-01-11

This is the rare CD that will appeal to newcomers and afficionados alike. For a lover of classical music, it is often annoying to hear parts of a composition played out of context from the main piece but this is alleviated by the choice of music on this disc. As the name itself indicates, the selected pieces are highly melodic slow movements from masters of the genre. The composers on this CD need no introduction and the selection is by and large superb, with only one jarring note. Mascagni's Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Chopin's Nocturne from Les Sylphides, Tchaikovsky's Theme from Romeo & Juliet, Korsakov's Theme from Scheherazade, Dvorak's Moderato and of course Mozart's Romance from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik are melodies that live forever and the others are not far behind, with the possible execption of Smetana's Vltava which does not quite fit in with the overall theme of the disc. The icing on the cake of course is that the performances are by none other than the Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan's baton. What more can one ask for? A perfect disc to listen to on a lazy evening or after a hard day's work. And for a newcomer to classical music, this disc is an excellent sampler that will whet the appetite for more.

A music lover's dream.......2000-04-30

The CD has all the lushness and slow tempi (adagio, of course) for which Karajan was renowned (and sometimes reviled). Every track is a gem, from the graceful ballet music of Les Sylphides to the opulent melody from Scheherazade. Particularly exquisite is the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. All in all, a beautiful listening experience, and highly recommended.

Charming Classical Music for Your Princess.......2007-06-18

I bought this for my little girl when she was a second grader. We both loved the choices. It has all of the famous classical little ballerina pieces.Although she is now a junior in high school-I still enjoy listening to this CD when I want some very recognizable classical music. If you have a little girl who loves to dance and dress up as a princess or watch princess movies, this CD is for you. I believe little boys would enjoy the classical melodies too.

My daughter has played this tape to fall asleep every night since she was 2. She is now 6. She was thrilled when we went to the Nutcracker and they were playing her "Go to Sleep" Music.
I am buying it for my 1-year old niece.

Engaging and Appealing.......2001-12-31

My children (ages 3 1/2 and 18 months) enjoyed this CD so much that it quickly became a favorite, over and above any of their other children's CDs. The music is engaging, the selection appeals to their ears (and feet!) and I would highly recommend it.

The music on this CD is electronically synthesized, not produced by traditional instruments. While this is not necessarily a horrible idea, it is apparent from the first moment of the first track and it did not suit our tastes.

The classical Child at the Ballet.......2000-06-19

Relaxing,moving, and upbeat-this CD has it all! I have a 2 year old who has loved it since the day she was born ,now she loves to dance to it! So, I thought I would bring it into my pre-ballet class that I teach and it was a hit!

el mejor ballet del mundo.......2005-01-14

Escuchar el cascanueces (una seleccion) es un momento grato y esta version es grandiosa, cada parte nos muestra la finura y delicado sonido de una de las mejores orquestas del mundo y de este gran director.
Pero definitivamente la gracia de este CD no es el cascanueces aunque sea una excelente version, lo mejor sin lugar a dudas son Las Silfides que tiene en esta una version grandiosa, un sonido espectacular una presentacion generosa, fulgurante, arrolladora, al igual que silvia y Coppelia versiones exquisitas de dos ballets que disfrutaran por estar presentados en unas suites increibles que no dan tiempo para reposar, solo hay que dejarse llevar y disfrutar de musica esplendida en una interpretacion sin igual.
Es sin lugar a dudas la Orquesta de Filadelfia perfecta, sonido pulcro, refinado, exquisito y Ormandy un director soberbio que nos deja la sensacion de haber escuchado lo mejor.

Memorable ballet pieces by Philadelphia and Ormandy.......2004-03-14

CBS/Sony has served the music fan well by retaining these ballet pieces for the listener. These pieces are certainly up to the standards of musicianship and vitality that one expects from a 1960s Philadelphia/Ormandy performance. The Philadelphia strings bring out beautifully the shimmering details of the score. The lower end of the recording may not be as full as one would want. Nevertheless, the recording quality overall is great, with the fullness of the orchestral sounds brought out by the recording venue and good microphone placement.

The only idiosyncracy of this recording is the manner in which Ormandy took the liberty to take the violins up one octave in the repeats of the Waltz of the Flowers. While it may be an over-indulgent use of the score, it is brought off well.

Do not hestiate to add these recordings your collection. The recordings are a great value and they may not be around forever. It is only regretable that CBS never issued complete recordings of these classic ballet scores on compact disc. Other reference guides of classical music CDs share my enthusiastic praise for these performances.

Ormandy Never Deserves Two Stars.......2003-06-03

While this might not be the best choice for a disc of ballet excerpts, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the great musical partnerships the classical music world has ever known, never deserves a two-star review. I personally have enjoyed all three of Ormandy's Sony Essential Classics Tchaikovsky Ballet Excerpt discs, and the other lesser known works they have showcased by Chopin, Delibes, Respighi/Rossini, Adam and Meyerbeer. Sure there are some better choices out there -- Rostropovich, Previn, Kurtz, Karajan, Dorati -- but don't take it out on Ormandy.

No bargain even at $7.99.......2000-10-22

Great orchestra and conductor come to nought in this reissue of ballet suites on Sony Classical.

In Chopin's Les Sylphides the strings sometimes sound"edgy", the venue dry.

The Sylvia and Coppelia suites sound better, however,the inexplicable remix in Syliva remids one of the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is listenable but commands no interest beyond other mainstream recordings.

Very Nice.......2001-04-17

This is the version of Les Sylphides that I had been looking for! Very nice even though it is only excerpts (it's 80% there). The version of Les Sylphides on "Chopin's Greatest Hits" doesn't even compare. This is the one you want.

Coppelia is complete and nicely done also.
