Beautiful rendition of outstanding classic cello pieces.......1998-12-11

This CD has rapidly become my favorite of my entire collection. I can listen to this for hours. Mr. Maisky plays beautifully, with passion, elegance and sensitivity. Although many of these pieces are familiar, Mr. Maisky is capable of nuances that make one feel that one has never before heard them performed so perfectly. As an amateur cellist myself, I have an intense desire to run to my cello and play these pieces whenever I listen to this CD. Unfortunately my enthusiasm far exceeds my talent so I am forever returning to Mr. Maisky's playing. Everyone for whom I have played this immediately wants to know where he or she can purchase it. I might just send off a few of these to some friends so they too can experience the beautiful sound of the cello played by this master.

Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10

This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.

Elegie with a trumpet.......2007-01-09

Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.

Poetic.......2000-06-07

Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.

A Viola Master In His Prime.......2005-05-01

William Primrose (1904-1982) was arguably the greatest of all violists. These recordings demonstrate that his virtuosity went hand in hand with supreme musicianship. The major items here are the two Brahms Sonatas, originally written for clarinet but later arranged by the composer for viola and piano. #1 (recorded 1946) is with pianist William Kapell, while #2 (recorded 1937) is with Gerald Moore. The transfers here are superior to Pearl's (both sonatas) and RCA's Kapell Edition (#1 only). I prefer these bolder performances to Primrose's later accounts with Rudolf Firkusny (Angel).

In #1 the tragically short-lived Kapell is a superb partner in a reading that is more dynamic and dramatic than any other I've heard. The sound here is warm and full. Moore is a fine accompanist in #2, which suffers a bit from its older sound.

The Boccherini Sonata #6 (1939, with Joseph Kahn) is a lovely work, and it's performed with great sensitivity and noble tone. The four encore items (from wartime Armed forces radio broadcasts) are delightful: a dazzling Paganini Caprice, Kreisler's Policinelle, an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile, and a gorgeously schmalzy rendition of Foster's "I dream of Jeannie with the light-brown hair."

I'm keeping this CD and weeding my other versions.

Highly recommended.

Heartrending.......2004-03-27

As a player and passionate fan of the viola, I can personally say that these are the most gorgeous pieces for solo viola I've heard. Wiliam Primrose is the king of the viola- his instrument sings like only a viola can on these recordings. If you love the rich, mellow sound of a viola, or are wondering what on earth a viola is, I highly recommend this recording. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

In the liner notes, the title of this CD is given as 'Favourite Piano Pieces', which seems to fit much better than anything to do with 'Romantic', for here there are gathered miniatures, transcriptions and excerpts by famous and less-famous composers from four different centuries (from the 17th to the 20th)! In fact, the only thing that seems to unite these most diverse tracks is their ability to show off the piano and the pianist to best advantage. The most difficult pieces here appear to be Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Flight of the Bumble Bee' in a transcription by Rachmaninov, and Dohnanyi's incredibly hard 'Concert Etude in F Minor', a fitting close to the whole recital, in which Balász Szokolay is able to distinguish himself as a very able player. The rest of the programme is generally also well-played, with the faster pieces in particular being delivered with skill and gusto, while the slower ones (Debussy, Kreisler) tend to lack something of this enthusiasm; it is perhaps fortunate that the majority of numbers are faster pieces. My personal favourite is Grieg's 'March of the Trolls', closely followed by Handel's 'Harmonious Blacksmith' (which should, of course, really be played on a harpsichord, but still sounds very good on a concert piano) and Paderewski's 'Menuet'. All in all, an entertaining hour of piano playing and excellently recorded, provided you don't mind taking a guided tour through the last 400 years of composition in such a short time.

Album Description

Live recordings 1951-1963 featuring Monique de La Bruchollerie, a great pianist little remembered today. Born in Paris to a family of musicians including Boildieu and Messager among her ancestors, she graduated with the Premier Prix from the Paris Conservatory and a few years later became the first French winner of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. She became a close friend of Emil Gilels and a protégé of Charles Munch, who launched her career after World War II. She played under the greatest conductors, such as Celibidache, Jochum, and Karajan, but in 1966 a tragic car accident incapacitated her left hand. She died in another accident six years later. Because she did not like rigid ideas and she favored the creativity of the moment, Bruchollerie was always reticent about making recordings, making these documents all the more precious.

Exquisite Performances from Arthur Rubinstein.......2003-03-19

The Tchaikovsky First and the Rachmaninoff Second have been closely identified with Rubinstein and understandably so. Even though he had plenty of competition with Rachmaninoff playing his own work and Horowitz playing a concerto that suited him rather well, Rubinstein does shine in both very brilliantly.

Recorded on May 27, 1946 in Carnegie Hall, this recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 2 with Vladimir Golschmann and the NBC Symphony Orchestra is not the best performance on disc, but by far not the worst. Rubinstein has a rather good sense of direction and tempo, but plays it a bit "drier" than other performers do.

The Tchaikovsky (recorded on November 16, 1946) is played with marvelous interpretation, phrasing, tempo, and technique. As for the accompaniment, Mitropoulos and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra do brilliantly. It is indeed a very fine performance.

The mono sound is fair. The sound during the Rachmaninoff is a bit better than it is during the Tchaikovsky. I would give this disc 4 1/2 stars if I could.

Rubinstein Shines in these Ever Popular Concertos.......2001-03-22

World War II caused an abrupt slowdown in Arthur Rubinstein's recording schedule, as it did for everybody. Wartime rationing was in effect and the shellac and other materials needed to make records were in short supply. In 1946, with the war over, Rubinstein returned to the recording studios with a passion. Indeed, Rubinstein made more recordings in 1946 than he had during the entire course of the war.

This was Rubinstein's second of three recordings of Tchaikovsky's warhorse, and represents an about face in interpretive approach from the earlier version with Barbirolli (Volume 1 of the Rubinstein Collection). The earlier version, though undeniably exciting, was played rather sloppily and suffered from poor sound. These problems were a factor in RCA's decision to supersede the Rubinstein/Barbirolli version with the Horowitz/Toscanini recording made in 1941. Rubinstein was furious, and roundly criticized the latter performance as being artistically deficient and technically defective. (He was right on the second count: Side 6 of the 8 sided 78-RPM set was markedly off pitch with the rest of the concerto.) For a later recording of the Tchaikovsky, Rubinstein remarked about his change in approach, claiming that he wanted to "reestablish what a beautiful, beautiful piece it is." He also criticized the way certain pianists performed the piece as a mere virtuoso warhorse, and those who knew Rubinstein's history with his rival knew his verbal barbs were aimed squarely at Horowitz.

Rubinstein's 1946 performance is one of the more lyrical interpretations of Tchaikovsky's well-worn warhorse. The pianist certainly lets virtuoso fireworks burst from the keyboard when the music calls for it. But, phrasing, tempo, and dynamics bespeak of a kinder, gentler Tchaikovsky First. Dimitri Mitropolous and the minneapolis Symphony Orchestra do a fine job of accompaniment.

Rubinstein was, believe it or not, one of the first pianists to record Rachmaninoff's de rigeur Second Concerto (a work so popular, Horowitz refused to record it or even play it in public after leaving Russia in 1925). The worst thing one can do to any version of the Rachmaninoff Second is to compare it to the composer's own recordings (1924, acoustical; 1929, electrical), both made with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Rubinstein gets somewhat less out of the piece, musically, than the composer. Nor does he have the superhuman technique heard in William Kapell's version. However, Rubinstein's three performances (this one, along with the Reiner version made in 1956 and the Ormandy version from 1971) can withstand this comparison better than most. Rubinstein's clear-headed, direct approach to the music serve as a reminder that the concerto was relatively new when this recording was made (the piece was composed in 1900, when Rubinstein was a teenager).

The recording heavily favors the piano, and the accoustic is dry, but the restoration has made the sound acceptable.
