Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine was a child prodigy who began performing in public at age seven. Today she is one of America's most acclaimed violinists, as well as the best selling artist on Cedille Records. Maud Powell (1867-1920) was the premier female American violinist of her era, and she made numerous classic recordings between 1904 and 1919 that are still sought after by collectors. This CD is a tribute from one eminent American violinist to another, honoring Maud Powell for the tremendous positive influence she had on later American artists. All of the selections are works recorded originally by Powell, now able to be heard in contemporary sound. Many of the selections are seldom or never recorded elsewhere, and all are extremely accessible.

Great Tribute--Wonderfully Performed.......2007-07-13

This recording is just plain fun! Rachel Barton Pine is one of my favorite young violinists, and this may be my favorite of her albums! Not only is the music exceptionally well chosen, Mrs. Pine's performances are top-notch across the board. As usual, her technique is wonderful. And the musicality of the performances leaves nothing to be desired. Just listen to the sweetness of her playing in Amy Beach's Romance! I can listen to this one track over and over and not become bored. Then contrast the fiery virtuosity Pine exhibits in Bellstedt's Caprice on Dixie. Just wonderful! Let's just say this disc is going to remain in my CD player for a long time! Highly, highly recommended.

A great player can give meaning and substance even to lightweight miniatures. Andsnes says that his musical "horizon," at first limited to "big, important" music, opened to the appreciation of the short "salon" pieces and arrangements assembled on this record only as he got older, though they had accompanied him since childhood. The program features original compositions and transcriptions, including many familiar favorites. They span several centuries and come from every corner of Europe. Andsnes' virtuosity is breath-taking, his tone is beautiful, and his legato sings regardless of the accompanying texture. Above all, he captures every style, idiom, and mood. Andsnes' phrasing, dynamics, and liberties are balanced and poised, and his love for the music speaks through every note. Listeners will choose their own favorites among these 22 very different pieces, but surely no one will be able to resist Gieseking's spectacular arrangement of Richard Strauss' "Serenade," which adds torrents of notes to the virtuosic piano part and incorporates the vocal line as well. The fleetness and clarity of the Chopin "Impromptu" here never touches the ground, while Ibert's "Little White Donkey" has charm and delicacy and Liszt's "Liebestraum" resounds with ardent passion. Andsnes' brilliant, captivating performance will induce smiles of admiration and pleasure as well as a new respect for this versatile and colorful repertoire. --Edith Eisler

The appearance of this disk on many Best of 2006 lists came as no surprise. I heard Andsnes perform several of these selections in Chicago and Kalamazoo early in the year, and in Michigan even got a sampler CD of "Horizons" as we left the recital that whetted my appetite. Everything that makes Andsnes' playing compelling is here, but listen in particular for how, in so many of the pieces, he's able to bring out the left hand that are clearly not just microphone/recording studio wizardry. A true gem.

These 1960 recordings sum up the great music-making Karajan enjoyed with the Philharmonia and the 5th in particular has a freshness which lacks in his later recording with the Berlin Philharmonic. For Karajan collectors, this is a must-have!!!! This is one of the great Philharmonia recordings that solidified Karajan as a top-knotch recording artist.

An excellent recording........1999-03-22

I cannot think of anything better to say than the caption on the album itself: "A tender soiree, a romantic tete-a-tete, the anticipation of a jour fixe are what come to mind when listening to this album of fond reminiscences from a vanished but perhaps more colourful and intimate era. As an expression of a quite definite spirit of an epoch, the music on this recording is romantic without being sentimental, colourful but never flamboyant, and intimate whilst avoiding excessive stylisation."

The music is beautifully played, and the recording quality is of the highest. It is definately a bargain at the twelve or so dollars Amazon.com is charging.

It Would Be Worth Every Cent Just for the Brahms Sonatas.......2006-12-19

This is probably my favorite boxed set of anything, ever. Each disc has its own merits but the Brahms and Franck are passionate and sublime, the Bartok is everything you want your Bartok to be, and of course the Tchaikovsky is without comparison. Long live King David!

Essential Oistrakh.......2002-01-10

A mandatory purchase (at a bargain price!) for all violin lovers- it contains some of Oistrakh's greatest recorded performances, including mind-boggling performances of the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms and and Dvorak concerti as well as the famous sonata recordings with Richter. Please, BMG, could we have more such treasures from Melodiya's legendary vaults?

Perhaps the great accomplishment in playing an instrument is to play it naturally, as if it were like breathing. Few artists prove this point as well as Oistrakh, the Soviet Union's artist, a true symbol of the Russian's school of music's excellence. As some other reviewer said, this is a moment of true musical orgasm. As an aspiring violinist, hearing Oistrakh's effortless rendition of the Tchaikovsky brings one almost to tears before such greatness. Some may complain about his dated method, but I favor it above any other artist, and highly recommend his interpretation of both the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky. Considering the fact that people didn't walk out of his performance of the pieces while a bombing raid was going on (during WWII), the man's musical prowess is second to none. Of special attention is the Brahms Sonata in A Major with Richter, easily one of the purest performances of the piece.

Reviewer David Mednicoff is exactly right about this set. All the concerto performances are terrific, but the two discs of sonatas (Brahms #2 & 3; Frank; Shostakovich [the live world premiere] and Bartok) with Richter are really something else. Amazing.

I must admit I'm puzzled by the reviewer below who calls this recital "tepid". Perhaps my musical thermometer is set to a different standard...?

At any rate, I first heard this CD at a friend's house. I was absolutely captivated, and was dearly tempted to borrow the CD. But I knew I'd want my own copy - I hate returning CDs or books with which I've fallen in love, so I wisely just wrote down the CD title and added it to my wishlist so that I could get my own copy.

A week ago I was fortunate enough to spot the CD at one of the music stores I visit. I didn't hesitate for a second, but grabbed this CD (along with another instant "must buy", Suzie LeBlanc's latest recording).

And I'm not disappointed. I've loved Soile Isokoski's beautiful voice since I have first heard her singing Strauss. I haven't always thought her beyond reproach - I found her Finnish sacred song recital uninspired, for some odd reason, and I have to admit I wasn't entirely convinced by her as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte (perhaps I want a little more fire in the performance for that role? I'm not sure...) - but it's always such a beautiful voice, and her German is lovely. The cool loveliness of her voice reminds me of a silver-glinting river winding its murmuring way under the milky light of a gibbous moon - it has that quality of silvery shimmer and almost tremulous elegance.

This recording may well be one of her best. I could do without the Gershwin, but it is an encore, not part of the actual recital programme... and the rest of the programme is meticulously chosen with great intelligence. The Sibelius songs are something to rave about - I cannot fathom why anyone would not adore these. I particularly loved the first track "Våren flyktar hastigt", which is by turns shimmering and delicate, then fuller and more passionate. The Berg (Sieben frühe Lieder) are miraculously sung - perfect miniatures of some of my favourite Berg (as I lean definitely more towards the melodic than towards 12-tone eschewing of it). The Strauss Lieder, of course, are ravishing - perhaps Cäcilie, the final song of the set, is the absolute high point, but it's all utterly gorgeous.

I also enjoyed the delightful "Ma elän" (Merikanto - a composer by whom I'd not heard anything previously).

The piano accompaniment by Marita Viitasalo was perfectly fine. I would probably class her as a "very good" accompanist than a "brilliant" accompanist, but really there's little of which to complain. And Soile Isokoski soars with poise, charm, elegance and real beauty... The recording was, in short, as good as I remembered.

Recommended without hesitation.

An extremely brave recital, but the interpretations are tepid.......2007-02-24

One has to admire the courageous integrity of a soprano who could fill a ecital hall with Schubert chooisng instead to program six songs by Sibelius followed by Berg's Seven Early songs. Soile Isokoski has a lovely lyric soprano that has darkened and grown fuller with maturity. She is Finnish and therefore attuned to Sibelius's rather moody vocal style (his musical inspirations are essentially German, not Scandinavian, however). At the end of the recital we do get to hear some familiar lieder by Strauss, several of them masterpieces. but by then it has become clear that Isokoski is too placid to hold on'es attention, and her accompanist is equally bland, of not more so. That's too bad, given the adventurous and welcome repertoire.
