Dorumsgaard; who knew?.......2006-07-18

This is a great CD. I bought this CD specifically because I am a fan of Flicka. The CD opened a whole new world of music to me.
Dorumsgaard is an amazing composer who has, I've come to find out, over 20 volumes of beautiful music written for the voice and piano.

This has led me to other singers who have recorded his music.

This CD, however, stands alone as a great recital from top to bottom by Frederica von Stade.

This is a great find, recorded live in Edinburgh in 1976. Hearing this outstanding concert, it is easy to understand why Von Stade has a reputation for intimate rapport with an audience; she has a beautiful instrument coupled with unusually sensitive interpretive skills, plus a sense of humor. The program is wide-ranging and includes two of her best-known encores, as well as a bonus track from Massenet's "Cendrillon," with full orchestra conducted by Mario Bernardi.

The Ives set, with its contrasts in color and mood, could be a microcosm for the entire recital. "Memories," with its two contrasting parts, seems to be the audience favorite, judging from the laughter and spontaneous applause. And "Tom Sails Away" quietly quotes a familiar George M. Cohan song with gentle poignancy. The Mahler set is gorgeously done, as well as a colorful Poulenc group. And Benjamin Britten's haunting chord changes put a set of British folk songs in a fresh new context.

The two encores could not be more different: a sly rendition of the "Tipsy Song" from Offenbach's La Périchole, followed by Carol Hall's touching "Jenny Rebecca," which von Stade apparently learned after she heard it sung by Barbra Streisand.

Two small quibbles that keep this from being a five-star recommendation: the piano sound is a bit metallic, in the way that some live recordings can be. This should not deter anyone from purchasing the disc, and is no reflection whatsoever on Martin Isepp, whose outstanding playing and instincts are crucial to this recital's success. Also, the booklet notes are a bit sloppily edited. The track numbers begin with 1 through 7, then skip to 9 - i.e., track 9 should be no. 8, track 10 is no. 9, and so on. And the last paragraph just ends, with an incomplete sentence dangling in the air. But this is minor; just take a nice pen and make the changes in the booklet yourself.

An unusually varied recital by one of the most poised and intelligent singers of our time.

Absolutely priceless early Von Stade not available elsewhere.......1999-08-28

What a wonderful concert! The material is varied and well-executed. Only three years into her international career, Miss Von Stade shows here exactly why she became an ovenight sensation in Europe. Most of the material in this concert has not previously been available on record. For Von Stade fans, this is an absolute MUST. For others, who obviously have never heard her, this is a glorious introduction to one of the world's finest singers.

This record presents Mahler's early songs in a new light, featuring the Songs of a Wayfarer in the original version with piano, 3 songs published only recently, and 11 songs in orchestrations by Luciano Berio. Supreme as conductor and symphonist, Mahler clearly had orchestral colors in mind when writing his piano accompaniments; his masterful orchestrations of many of them quickly inspired contemporary devotees to add their own, notably Robert Heger and Lothar Windsperger. Berio's arrangements are admirably Mahlerian in sound and style: skillfully using winds, harps, and drum rolls, he imitates bird calls, nature sounds, and military signals, underlining words and atmosphere and evoking both glittering colors and ominous somberness. Only occasionally does he succumb to the temptation to become too loud and lush. In two songs that appear twice, the simpler version is more affecting. Thomas Hampson, well-known as a distinguished Mahler interpreter, is superb. His voice is beautiful, impeccably pure, warm, and variable (he can carry on a conversation in two voices), his diction exemplary. He rather overdramatizes the Wayfarer songs, but his identification with every mood, character, and expression is complete throughout, from yearning, grief, and spine-chilling dread to lighthearted humor and irony. Pianist David Lutz supports him splendidly, and wisely does not attempt to imitate an orchestra in the Wayfarer selections. --Edith Eisler

Hampson has always been a major Mahler singer, and this CD collects some of his bes twork. I will leave it to the Amazon reviewer to tell the story of these arrangements and only say that the singing throughout was deeply satisfying. Beautiful, intelligent, and exciting interpretations ctching Mahler's style just right.

I am quite dissapointed to read that another reviewer failed to realize that this Cd brings together the two Mahler authorities of the 20th Century!!! Bernstein almost single-handedly brought Mahler into the public knowledge, and noone does it like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau!!!

You will not be upset by this at all - it is an incredible performance captured on this wonderful meeting. I recommend this without any reservation whatsoever.

Magnificent Mahler, But..........2003-07-30

When I purchased Leonard Bernstein's Complete Mahler Symphonies on Sony I was very excited. I had listened to enough individual Mahler Symphony performances to know that I loved this composer, and now I was finally getting to hear the first, and arguably the best, Mahler Cycle. The set did not let me down, but I initially I felt like Sony did by not including this CD in that box set. This CD of Mahler's Lieder is the only Mahler CD in the Bernstein Century series not to be included in the box. And now I see why -- because it is just Leonard Bernstein playing piano with baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau! You see, the Ruckert Lieder and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen were written for the vocalist to be accompanied by full orchestra, or just piano, and what we have here is the latter. This is a first rate collaboration, but piano-playing Leonard Bernstein is a far cry from symphonic Leonard Bernstein, and I frankly was a bit disappointed.

Other than about six tracks, this is a very good CD.

Nothing interesting. There are many pieces here but I have only enjoyed "The magnificent Seven". As for Mahler's First (included in the disc)...just forget it. It is the worst I have listened to, and I have listen to many....
