Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05
This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Incredible.......2003-01-04
Piatigorsky was a wonderful cellist and man. He often played with the violinist great Heifetz and the violist William Primrose. He had a great sense of music and when he played he strangely didn't move much. He kind of played beautifully without using his body. I love his playing. If you get a chance, try to buy that movie titled Heifetz/Piatigorsky. Rubinstein is my favorite pianist. He knows Brahms better than any other that I know. He was a great accompanist and knows when to play loud and when to back off. I adore this CD.
The Joy of Chamber-Music Making.......2001-10-17
Arthur Rubinstein received his early training as a musician in a manner totally foreign to today's young piano students. His early teachers were Joseph Joachim (a friend of Brahms) and Heinrich Barth. He was permitted by his teachers to give occasional performances, required to attend concerts, and played through the chamber repertoire with his fellow students. This is in contrast to the current generation which is consigned to the practice rooms of crowded conservatories (virtuoso factories, actually) and bred to win competitions, often at the expense of true musical development. As a result, Rubinstein was able to effortlessly make the crossover between stunning virtuoso performances, and communicative chamber music appearances.
Arthur Rubinstein and Gregor Piatigorsky were friends from 1931 until the cellist's death in 1976. Legend has it that the easy going cellist was a calming factor in the many quarrels which sprang up between violinist Jascha Heifetz and the pianist during their days as the Million Dollar Trio. Much of that personal warmth comes through in these performances, which were recorded in 1966. There is a give-and-take here which recalls the great chamber music recordings of Rachmaninoff and Kreisler. One never gets the sense that Rubinstein and Piatigorsky are trying to "one-up" each other. Everything is in perfect balance. Rubinstein loved Brahms, approached him as a living composer, and the result is performances which continue to inspire decades later.
The five Intermezzos were recorded at RCA's Hollywoood studios in 1953, and were originally issued as part of "Rubinstein plays Brahms" (LM-1787). Rubinstein plays the works with disarming directness.
The remastered sound in the Cello Sonatas is well balanced and vibrant without being overpowering. The solo items are in mono, and sound smoother than on the original LP.

Wonderful Rubinstein.......2003-01-03
This CD makes a mockery of present day standards. To listen to the light touch, the easy "tempo giusto", the natural rubato, and the interplay with the young Guarneri, who play beautifully, without being relegated to a supporting role as with other Big Name guests of other quartets, make this performane one of my very favourites in the whole Rubinstein Edition. The sounds quality too is excellent. I have a reasonably expensive play back system including micromega stage 6 cd player, and the CD sounds superb, with little indication of the age of the recording. BUY!

That's fine.......2006-10-31
The Rubinstein's chamber music records are fascinating, Brahms with Guarneri more especially. I love the Trio Nr 1 recorded with Heifetz and Feurmann, but this recordings with Szeryng and Fournier are my favorite.
Aristocratic and gorgeous.......2006-07-22
I had an opportunity last month to perform the B major trio at the piano with a collegiate cellist and an ex-professional violinist, so I decided as part of my preparation I would listen to a recording. This is the one I chose. My first impressions were that it was beautiful but flawed; the more I listened to it, though, the more I appreciated the beautiful and heartfelt performances that these musicians, all renowned in their own right, managed to produce in 3 days of collaborative effort.
The quality that I disliked initially was that the ensemble (that is, the simple mechanical details of musicians playing together) came up a little bit short. Articulations don't always match. Fournier both rushes and drags the main theme of the 4th movement within one phrase (forcing the pianist to compensate, not that his part is difficult here), while Szeryng plays it straight to better effect. Rubinstein scrambles some of the triplets in the development section of the 1st movement, and there are some other places where he trips on the (very demanding) score. But to delve into these quibbles is to miss the positive qualities. The players balance each other expertly; in the same passage that Fournier scrambles rhythmically at the beginning of the fourth movement, he also makes the great decision to play so close to the bridge that it almost scratches -- this to give his big, burly instrument a more incisive kind of sound, which is naturally matched by the violin in the range it plays in afterwards. More attention to detail in the opening of the first movement, where the 'piu forte' is marked with a -very- prominent low F-sharp from the 'cello, which serves to make the piano sound both warmer and bolder. Or in certain spots of the finale, when Szeryng arches up to high notes and then slices into them, producing a heart-rending human wail. These very subtle details are remarkable in how economically, but effectively, they heighten the emotional impact of the music.
So far I have only covered the B major trio; the C major trio is a very different animal, more difficult technically for the performers but less problematic emotionally. Rubinstein et al. perform it with simplicity and restraint, but still generate the right kind of warmth, expansiveness, and lyrical sweep that makes Brahms distinct from his illustrious predecessors. The variation movement, which has foreshadowings of the late piano music from Opp. 116-119, shows Rubinstein's touch for Brahms at its very, very best.

Brilliant. Colorful, emotional and extremely well produced Brahm's piano trios from fairly late in Rubinstein's life. You'll never know how old these recordings are just by listening. Rubinstein plays wonderfully fluid as always. This recording has taken over my life.
Outstanding Musicianship and Music.......2004-07-13
This music is heavenly. I have other versions of this music but this CD has blown me away. Highly recommended. The remastering is perfect.

Rare Dud.......2007-05-22
I bought this cd because of the many wonderful LPs which featured Szeryng or Rubenstein in combinations with other greats of my youth. It is a Dud. Any -wonders of articulation, tone, or phrasing the artists tried to express were squelched by terrible reproduction techniques. Even though it's inexpensive, avoid it. It's a waste of time and money.
An Old Appreciator
One of the best and most listened to albums in my collection.......2004-01-12
As a violinist and pianist, there are few recordings I delight in more than this one. The interplay between Artur Rubinstein and Henryk Szeryng is just gorgeous. If for some reason, you are more of a lay person considering purchase of this, listen to the first track and imagine it being played at a gorgeous spring wedding. If you're looking for a gift that's not from the standard repertoire of overplayed classical selections, this is an awesome CD that will delight that picky classical listener. Otherwise, for musicians, this is simply a sublime set of sonatas played by the best in the business. The recording quality is intimate and excellent. We are lucky to have these sensitive and thoughtful sessions captured and available on CD. I find myself listening to and being inspired by this CD far more than I ever anticipated. This CD is going to the desert isle with me!

A Great Recording Worthy of any Library.......2003-03-05
Rubinstein was the luckiest man indeed. Joachim did take him on musically when he was small. But we are also lucky in the sense that Rubinstein rediscovered Szeryng. That partly explains why there is such good collaboration between the two in this record.
There is a similiar version by Suk/Katchen. Suk is no less expressive but he is gloomier in tone, whereas Katchen is more robust and perhaps more intellectual than Rubinstein. The collaboration is surprisingly almost as good. Nonetheless, I prefer this one, as with Szeryng we have everything one could expect -- no wonder Perlman sounds a bit sour in his comments on Szeryng. What Szeryng has to offer is pure music: it's appealing, relaxing, it's irresistibe. One may not be always ready to go to Menuhin, not so with Szeryng. He is as charming as Kreisler albeit in a different way.
Rubinstein is equally relaxing but his music comes in a broader brush. One doesn't need to be able to appreciate the art of say, Egon Petri to be able to enjoy him, not at all. But it would help if one could go more often to Horszowski, then one would be able to enjoy him better. It's something quite different from Rudolf Serkin or Horowitz or Michelangeli, or indeed any modern pianist.
There is yet another version by Mutter. But it seems that it is essentially more to the taste of the younger generation, geared for surprises and excitement, wouldn't accept anything but the most excellent recorded sound. But as pointed out by some other reviewer, the recorded sound of this one is most excellent, so are the other two.
Superb Brahms Performances from Rubinstein and Szeryng.......2000-10-21
Arthur Rubinstein received his early training as a musician in a manner totally foreign to today's young students. His early teachers were Joseph Joachim (a friend of Brahms) and Heinrich Barth. He was permitted by his teachers to give occasional performances, required to attend concerts, and played through the chamber repertoire with his fellow students. This is in contrast to the current generation which is consigned to the practice rooms of crowded conservatories (virtuoso factories, actually) and bred to win competitions, often at the expense of true musical developement. As a result, Rubinstein was able to make the crossover between stunning virtuoso performances, and communicative chamber music appearances.
Henryk Szeryng first performed with Rubinstein in the 1950s. Immediately, their musical chemistry evolved into friendship, and it is this atmosphere which suffuses all of their recorded performances. There is a give-and-take in these performances which recalls the great chamber music recordings of Rachmaninoff and Kreisler. One never gets the sense that Rubinstein and Szeryng are trying to "one-up" each other. Everything is in perfect balance. Rubinstein loved Brahms, approached him as a living composer, and the result is performances which continue to inspire decades later.
The remastered sound is excellent in every respect, fully meeting the standards of the latest recordings.

Fantastic!.......2005-11-02
This collection represents Jose Van Dam at his best. The two arias from Faust are a little low for him but he sings them with great musicality. The aria from Mireille which is a rarity is sung brilliantly. Mr. Van Dam gets up to those high notes so easily. This collection mostly contains French Repertoire which was ideal for his voice. Several of the arias are rarely performed and I think should be performed more often. The few German selections are very effective as well. I think he was one of the finest Brahms Requiem soloists of all time.
Mr. Van Dam is still singing well at age 65. I think he is one of the finest singers and musicians because everything he sings means something to him internally. That is something that defines a great artist for me. I highly recommend this collection because it is a tool for singers to learn how to pronounce French properly. The diction is so clear that you can practically write it down.

Russian-born Israeli cellist Mischa Maisky is not the superstar type. He rarely makes recordings and rarely performs outside Europe. But his playing, which he does brilliantly and beautifully on this recording, places him among the finest cellists of our time. This program of famous classical melodies, arranged for cello and piano, is one of the finest cello recordings ever made. --David Vernier
Album Details
Though his Recordings Are Relatively Few (Especially for a Major Label Artist), Mischa Maisky is Recognized as One of the Most Distinguished and Celebrated Cellists of Our Time. Joined by his Long Time Accompanist Pavel Gililov, this is a Recording all Cello Enthusiasts Are Sure to Enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful rendition of outstanding classic cello pieces.......1998-12-11
This CD has rapidly become my favorite of my entire collection. I can listen to this for hours. Mr. Maisky plays beautifully, with passion, elegance and sensitivity. Although many of these pieces are familiar, Mr. Maisky is capable of nuances that make one feel that one has never before heard them performed so perfectly. As an amateur cellist myself, I have an intense desire to run to my cello and play these pieces whenever I listen to this CD. Unfortunately my enthusiasm far exceeds my talent so I am forever returning to Mr. Maisky's playing. Everyone for whom I have played this immediately wants to know where he or she can purchase it. I might just send off a few of these to some friends so they too can experience the beautiful sound of the cello played by this master.

Another example of great playing.......2007-01-10
This CD of Sergei's playing is very nice. Him and his sister are a fine duo that can make very beautiful music with just the Piano and Trumpet/Flugelhorn. This CD shows Sergei's expressive and lyrical side rather than his great technical ability. The music on this CD is something you would want to sit in front of a fire and really relax. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Classical music, not just to trumpet players.
Elegie with a trumpet.......2007-01-09
Looking for Elegie. It was the correct piece, but I would have preferred it done with violins etc. Elegie was my mother's favorite piece.
Poetic.......2000-06-07
Sergei Nakariakov is one of the greatest trumpet players alive today. His repertoire is enormous and keeps growing. He is featured here on a disc of songs and lieder from the vocal repertoire. Who needs words? His trumpet speaks as clear as any voice, and is as touching as any words could be. The music is brilliant anyway. He someone makes it all a little more special.
