Though Jackson Browne's albums are not plentiful--in a career that stretches 32 years, he's released just over a dozen--they're filled with songs that serve as resilient touchstones for millions who passed through those decades. Originally forging a way for himself as a songwriter, his debut, Saturate Before Using, placed him at the forefront of the southern California rock scene. His contemporaries and compatriots, the Eagles, even took his "Take It Easy" to the top of the charts. Even at his most anthemic, his songs resonate with small details that keep the proceedings human-scaled. The sympathetic accompaniment buoys a voice that's remarkable for its lack of idiosyncrasies. His unmannered singing voice is an essential component in making songs like "These Days," "Fountain of Sorrow," and "Running on Empty" flow with a casual ease that belies the high level of craftsmanship throughout. --David Greenberger
Album Description
Over the past three decades, Jackson Browne has created and voiced many of the most literate and emotionally resonant compositions in popular musicand sold more than 15 million albums, including the seven-times platinum Running On Empty and the #1 Hold Out. This year Browne's artistry is celebrated with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and with this new retrospective from Rhino. Browne's first-ever double-disc set compiles hits, singles, and choice album cuts from his acclaimed catalog, spotlighting both insightful works of personal introspection and passionately delivered songs of social and political observation. The 2002 recipient of the prestigious John Steinbeck Award (honoring those exemplifying the famed writer's environmental and social ideals), Browne is a mature artist and world citizen whose work shines on this long-awaited collection.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended 2CD collection from a great artist........2007-02-25
I bought this album last week and have been playing it in my car and at home. It is brilliant, and represents 30 years of Jackson Browne songs from 1972-2002. I do not know all that much else about Jackson Browne, but the songs here speak more eloquently than any biography you might read. This guy can really write, and his songs are always tuneful with strong messages, emotional truths, excellent use of words, and quite a lot of up-to-the-moment social commentary where he writes about the times we are living in from an American perspective (he's from California originally, I think) . Particularly fine, I think, are his mid-70's songs from albums For Everyman (the title tune has wonderful lyrics) , Late For The Sky ( rated by many as his best-ever studio album) , The Pretender and Running On Empty. I love the lyrics of songs like For A Dancer and Before The Deluge. Running On Empty is an acutely-observed road trip of how you have to try and keep going even when the pace of your life seems to be getting out of your control. The Load-Out/ Stay is a familiar tune that tells all about life as a touring musician. Somebody's Baby was a pop/rock tune I always really liked from the radio back in Grade 7 in 1982, and it's on here too ( previously it was only on a film soundtrack album ), while the satirical Lawyers In Love and the lovely In The Shape Of A Heart were great songs from the 80's. Not all songs are in the tuneful West Coast style of his 70's stuff, but he does not stray too far away from the lyrical style that brought him to prominence back then. Later stuff from the 90's and early 2000's shows that Jackson Browne's songwriting is still as fine as ever, and he is still touring , I believe.
There is a lot to love about this 2CD set and really I can't find anything on here I do not like.
Just one thing - fans of his 1986 duet hit with E Street band saxophonist / vocalist Clarence Clemons : You're A Friend Of Mine should note that this song is not on here. I'm hoping it'll turn up on the next Best Of... in a few years !
Highly recommended 2CD collection from a great artist.
The Must Have Album for Jackson Browne Fans!.......2007-01-16
Includes all Jackson's hits except "Love Needs A Heart", and "That Girl Could Sing".
Lives in the balance?.......2006-12-27
What has happened to the song "Lives in the balance" on this set? If you go to his website it sounds really great!!! On this set it sounds awfull!! It sounds as if he was in a really big hurry to get the song over with. The packaging if you could call it that is really lame. Foam dots for holders? What do you do when those fall off? I suppose you put the cd's in jewel cases or else they will get really scratched up. Not to mention it is missing some of his greatest work! True you do get alot of songs for the money but, there should have been more time planning this set out before actually producing it. If you own an I-pod I suggest you go to apples I-tunes web page and import the great songs this set is missing as well as the others you really like off of this set and you will probably have spent the same amount of money if not less.
Great Anthology Of A Truly Righteous Rocker.......2006-08-21
THE VERY BEST OF JACKSON BROWNE is a great anthology of Browne's best work from throughout his career. Over the course of 32 songs, you can hear him age gracefully from the innocence of the early days through his politically-edged work of the mid-to-late-80s, to the more mature work of his later years. Browne's belief, shared with most rockers of his generation, that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes THE VERY BEST OF JACKSON BROWNE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Too much missing to call it the very best.......2006-05-31
And it's too slanted towards Browne's later work. Save the $$$ on the compilation and just get his CDs. They're all worth it and the album cuts you are missing could be your favorite songs. I especially miss "That Girl could Sing."

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.
This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.
The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew
Customer Reviews:
Nice songs from this album.......2007-07-22
This is the first album I have acquired of the Three Tenors, and it was wonderful. The selections were easy to listen to and familiar to me. None of the heavy operatic selections. It is the best. I will buy more albums of them.
Not bad.......2006-03-18
This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.
The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11
The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.
There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??
The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.
It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)
To make a long story short - a very enjoyable cd!
Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14
A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.
Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21
I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11
The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.
A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13
Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.
Wonderful.......2006-07-07
Just a great collection from Erik Satie. I would highly recommend this one!
Richard review of Best of Satie.......2005-09-02
The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.
Got Satie?.......2005-07-27
... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.
The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.
Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.
Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

Connie Francis Millennium Collection.......2007-05-29
This CD is Great!!! I forgot what a great singer Connie was and still is. It's wonderful to hear some of her all time hits like Stupid Cupid, Who's Sorry Now, etc. Takes me back to my high school days.
Oooh, my happiness !!!.......2007-03-09
Connie Francis possessed a wonderful voice when she was in her prime in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Her rich, warm and vibrant voice attracted much deserved attention wherever and whenever she performed. Connie performed later on in her life but the songs on this CD do indeed represent her very best work.
The CD starts off with one of Connie's signature songs entitled "Who's Sorry Now?" Connie breathes new life into this much older song; and her voice charms you as Connie expresses every little nuance in all the lyrics to this song. The musical arrangement reflects forethought; the chorus in the background adds a certain type of poignancy to this ballad. "Stupid Cupid," a song with a much more lighthearted set of lyrics, follows this. The melody is catchy and the arrangement again makes use of a chorus to enhance the beauty of the song. Connie sings this to perfection!
Other great ballads on this CD include "My Happiness" conducted by the very talented David Rose; the strings on this number complement the beauty of Connie's voice brilliantly. No wonder all of the songs on this track set charted very high! "Lipstick On Your Collar" boasts a somewhat happy, silly melody that belies the sadness Connie expresses as she sings of her man who cheated on her. "Among My Souvenirs" features Connie and the musicians in total harmony--fantastic! "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" deals with unrequited love; and "Where The Boys Are" explores Connie's desire to find her one true love.
"Mama" sports a beautiful musical intro; and Connie sings so sensitively about her late mother that you will invariably begin to think of your own mother. Many people will relate to this song; and the lyrics that are in Italian infuse this ballad with a bittersweet sentimentality that one rarely finds in even the greatest of ballads. Connie's voice is in perfect form; and the strings on this number add a certain dramatic effect that make you miss your own mother regardless of whether she is living apart from you or she has passed.
The CD ends very strong with the exceptionally upbeat "Vacation." I like how the remastering kept the slight echo effect of Connie's voice as she gleefully expresses the excitement of being young and free from school "under summer stars." This song packs such a wallop that you want to jump up and dance for joy just listening to it! The melody is so catchy that it is positively infectious; you won't forget this number anytime soon!
The liner notes have wonderful color photos of Connie and you also get an essay about Connie written by Joseph F. Laredo.
Connie Francis dominated the charts for several years in the late 1950s and early 1960s--and for good reason, too. Hers was a young, fresh voice that expressed so many emotions precisely the way people experienced them in real life. People could relate to Connie for her energy as well as the topics of which she sang.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Connie Francis and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this CD, too.
The Best of Connie Francis.......2007-01-13
I enjoyed listening to the CD very much. I enjoy 'oldies' music but I just wish that for a millennium collection there would have been more selections on this CD. Still, I'm very glad that I purchased it.
HO HUM.......2006-05-20
Americans only seem to remember Connie for her many hits which was not her best material. It made her famous and rich and sent her career sailing farther than any other female singer. But the great Connie Francis can be found in her later work Try "Standards", the 3 South Africian collections (hard to get). You'll hear the REAL Connie. I am glad people are still buying her records, even if it is the oft time released hit collections, but she deserves better and should be acknowledged as the fine song stylist that she still is...as she currently tours and the audiences love her. Bravo Connie. You are one of the very few fine singers left that can still carry a tune. And boy can you carry it! WOW!
Saint Francis........2005-11-15
Connie Francis was the Maria Callas of Pop music. Her incredible popularity in the 1950's and early 1960's was unmatched.... she was the girl every father wanted for a daughter and every boy wanted for his girl. Her singular, sing-songy, heartbreaking voice was very similar to that of the great Patsy Cline's, partly in fact that not only did they both have that little "cry" in their voice, that almost no one can do successfully, but also in that they could take pretty much any material, no matter how minor, and make it good, sometimes great. But fame and popularity are usually followed by heartache, and Connie Francis' career was no exception. It was dominated and controlled, we later learned, by her domineering and controlling father, who made her every career decision, based on what he and the industry perceived to be her good-girl image. He famously kept a hawk-like watch on his precious commodity/daughter, including destroying the relationship with the person that she always referred to as the love of her life, Bobby Darin. Her career waned in the 1960's, due mostly to changing musical tastes, but she had forever carved out a solid niche as one of the most popular girl singers of the 20th century. She continued to perform in public, mostly in smaller venues. It was while appearing in such a place, in Westbury, New York, that the now famous, very violent sexual assault occurred , forever changing her life.
The great career, and, apparently, the great voice had ended. Bad marriages and bad business decisions followed, along with family tragedies. She retreated from public life, save for the occasional tabloid intrusion. Further publicity surrounded not only her lawsuit against The Westbury, where her assault occurred, but that the trauma of that event had caused her to permanently lose her voice. Her behavior was reported to be increasingly erratic. She further withdrew. She did not reappear for years, until she authored her auto-biography, where many of the facts from her pained past came to light. Anyone who saw her comeback on Dick Clark's show around this same period will never forget it. This girl that was so loved by so many had her voice back, and the audience reaction and the tears in Dick Clark's eyes were a natural, spontaneous, honest reaction to a totally unstaged, rare outpouring of genuine affection, that had more to do with sincere appreciation than in maybe the perfection or imperfection of her voice. About 10 years or so ago, a group of my friends and I saw that she was appearing in Ft.Lauderdale, so we thought we'd have a laugh and go see her, it'd be fun in a campy kind of way....very "Where The Boys Are." Well, any preconceived thoughts about the reasons why we were attending quickly gave way to awe at the way this lady had this audience in the palm of her hand from the moment she swept onstage. It wasn't a performance...she was there amongst friends that she knew loved and admired her. When she introduced her mother to the audience from the front row, then proceeded to sing one of her greatest hits, "Mama", directly to her in a voice that reached the heavens, well....there was not a closed jaw nor dry eye in the house, and the standing ovation that sprung up on the last incredible notes was only a reflex to true greatness. I have had very few moments like this in live performing, and I've seen alot of them. This is the kind of reaction and loyalty Connie Francis elicits, due not only in that she represents nostalgia for an increasingly bygone time and innocence, but that her natural talent and beautiful voice brought joy to so many, from grandmothers to teens to the troups in VietNam. This 20th Century Masters Collection is a good place not only to reacquaint yourself to the voice and songs that will undoubtedly bring a big smile to your face and a tear to your eye, but also for those not acquainted with this voice that was such a big part of Pop music , and allows her to remain one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Though Connie Francis leads a very private life, and has been out of the spotlight for many years, her inherent dignity and musical legacy will always insure a big spot in the hearts of those millions that her music touched. God Bless you Dear Lady, and thanks for all the joy.

Luciano Pavrotti: The Best (Farewell Tour).......2007-06-27
Wonderful Pavarotti sings the best of the best. His voice never ceases to amaze me. Listening pleasure at it's finest.
Luciano Pavorotti.......2007-02-17
All the songs are wonderful, can never become tired of listening to his songs. Excellent.
Luciano is the best!.......2007-01-20
I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
Irish at it's best........2007-05-07
This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.
Irish Magic.......2006-08-21
This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.
Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25
I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-12
When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!
So wonderful. So much fun.
Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.
Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!
The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22
This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!
Well worth buying.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12
If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.
Good music........2007-03-09
I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.
Magnificent!.......2007-02-27
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.
Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).
I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.
I loved it!.......2007-02-22
Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.
The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15
Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

Customer Reviews:
The right stuff.......2007-07-23
This is an excellent compilation of Dr John, that makes a perfect introduction to the mans many talents. As producer, guitarist, pianist, writer, voodoo rock star and Jazz and Blues musician you are bound to find something you like here.
You want to hear the Piano playing that inspired Jools Holland? Listen to the 'Honey Dripper' from the marvellous solo Piano album 'Dr John plays Mac Rebennack'. His early 70's material (mainly produced by Allen Toussaint) is well represented by 'Right Place Wrong Time', 'Such A Night', 'Iko Iko', 'Qualified', What Comes Around', 'Mos' Scocious' and of course a cover of Professor Longhair's 'Tipitina' (another chance to hear his Piano skills).
Some of the later material like 'Makin' Whoopee!' with Rickie Lee Jones, is a little too smooth for my taste. This track is a swinging big band affair, its still good don't get me wrong, but all the rough edges have gone. However, modern production techniques can't hide Dr Johns singing voice which will not be to everybodies taste - given time you will get used to it.
Theres a nice 4 page booklet with the CD which gives you a mini biography of the artist. In a way those 4 pages are like this CD. Its just an overview. There is or was a better compilation available (The Dr John Anthology) and in truth some of his albums (like ...plays Mac Rebennack) should be in your collection anyway. But this is a fine way to find out which Dr John you want buy into.
Not for everyone, but a great CD just the same.......2006-08-14
Contrary to popular belief, The Night Tripperhad more good songs than just Right Place, Wrong Time, sadly the only Dr. John tune most can identify. For starters, the stripped-down voodoo music (no better term) I Walk on Gilded Splinters does a better job of sending chills down my spine than anything death-metal has to offer (that crap makes me laugh, but that's off-topic). That tune is easily one of the 100 best songs ever recorded. Incidentally, the chorus of the song is not "Till Alberta" but "Till I burn out". Anyway, I'm also a big fan of Right Place Wrong Time Such a Night, Junko Partner (I especially get a laugh out of that opening line), Wash Mama Wash, Loop Garroo, Iko Iko, Tipitina, Qualified, What Goes Around (Comes Around), Honeydripper and Goin' Back to New Orleans. Each of these tunes can go toe-to-toe with virtually every radio hit by the much more-famous Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. Dr. John's music is very niched, a combination of funk, blues, jazz and voodoo grooves, but it's great stuff just the same and should be heard by all music fans. Granted, it might just be too left-of-the-center for you. Only one key track was left out: Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya-ya, which could've easily replaced Mos' Scocious. The Doctor's vocals and piano are strong through the album, and every song is good. Why not?
Les' Scosious.......2005-12-13
Cut down from Rhino's 2CD anthology Mos' Scosious from the previous year, this 18-track non-chronological collection manages to weave its way through the various styles of Dr John's albums in such a way that they seem to fit together despite their disparate nature, from the mystic voodoo of the Gris Gris album and the New Orleans roots of his piano playing to the lushness of the two tracks from In A Sentimental Mood. Most of the most popular singles are included (missing are Wang Dang Doodle, Let The Good Times Roll, Rite Away, Let's Make A Better World and a few others), as well as some illuminating album tracks made for Atco (to 1974), for Warner (1989-1992), including the Grammy-winning duet with Rickie Lee Jones, Makin' Whoopee; and the Baltimore-based Clean Cuts (a solo piano tour-de-force found on Joe Liggins' Honey Dripper)(1981)
Truly the very best.......2005-07-06
Trying to pick the best of Dr. John has got to be as hard as trying to classify what type of music he plays. But I have to agree with the decisions on what to put on this disk.
Not the best of compilation I would have made.......2003-09-04
It's always going to be the case that when someone puts out a best of compilation of an artist you really dig, the opinion on which songs should have been included and not is always going to be a question. Where is 'Life', 'Traveling Mood', and 'Just the Same' all off his classic album - In The Right Place? What about 'Blow Wind Blow', 'Tipitina' or 'Somebody Changed The Lock' not to mention others from Gumbo? I don't think this compilation is compiled all that well, but what are you going to do, everyone has their favorites. Dr john is a legend. Buy Gumbo, In the Right Place, Gris Gris, and anything the man is releasing because he's still got it. So three stars although it hurts me to do so.
