Album Description
Although she was born and bred in Italy, Gambarini brings a distinctly American jazz flavor to Easy to Love. On the title track, her multi-octave range can be seen as an indication of the "cool school" but when she starts swinging she's anything but cool! Her scats and melodies breathe beautifully and her melodic lines have a lighter, airier quality that finds her swinging but in a softer, more relaxed manner. Billie Holiday's anthem "Lover Man" has been claimed as part of the cool jazz movement and Gambarini certainly offers an outstanding variation of this sublime ballad. Even Gershwin would have enjoyed her passionate reworking of "Porgy, I's Your Woman Now/I Loves You Porgy." Gambarini is equally successful at presenting this Great American Songbook standard as a medley of sentimentality with a range of penetrating cries and whispers implicated in her voice. From ballads to bop, Roberta proves she's no stranger to the art of swing or the bop idiom. Once into "On The Sunny Side of The Street" she teases with playful scats and daring vocalese that would renew anyone's vocal jazz ambitions. "Lover Come Back To Me" adopts a different tonal palette as she launches into a swinging set complete with searing scats that clearly show her respect for Ella Fitzgerald. Joined by the inimitable James Moody on tenor sax and vocals on "Lover Man" and "Centerpiece," the saxophonist adds his instinct for melodic development and own brand of scatting. Adding further to Gambarini's style is a mellifluous but dynamic ensemble that includes Chuck Berghofer and John Clayton on bass, Tamir Handelman and Gerald Clayton on piano, Willie Jones III and Joe La Barbera on drums.

Once again - THANK YOU AMAZON REVIEWERS!.......2007-07-13
I might not have discovered this wonderful treasure (what a voice!) if it hadn't been for Amazon and the wonderful reviews written about this amazing talent. Thank you in particular to my Amazon friend Mary Whipple (her review, along with 'Mr. Jim' are my personal favorites and there is nothing I can pen in my review that could top their efforts) who really persuaded me to make this purchase. As an avid fan of JAZZ music, I have to say that I am absolutely thrilled to have discovered this remarkable vocalist. My personal opinion is that she is the best thing to happen to jazz music in the past twenty years. Just listen to this incredible debut recording and see for yourself.
I can guaranty this Italian bella from Milan will make you swoon with delight! My heart goes a pit-a-pat everytime I hear her. If there is a true successor to the great dames of jazz past (i.e Billie, Ella, Sarah, Carmen, Anita, et al...) she is definitely it! Also, much credit needs to be given to the wonderful musicians behind the beautiful voice - Chuck Berghofer and John Clayton (bass), Gerald Clayton and Tamir Hendelman (Piano), Joe La Barbera and Willie Jones III (Drums), and a special guest performance by James Moody (Tenor Saxophone, Vocals).
Thank you again Amazon and you wonderful reviewers!
A talent in progress!.......2007-06-27
Roberta Gambarini, although her youth, demonstrates a profound sense of expression and sense of the meaning in every song she sings. She has generated around her a lot of succesful comments, but mostly what it really amazes me is her profound commitment and multidimensional range.
The arrangements are really superb and I don't hesitate for a second. She is one of the great jazz singers in this early Century.
Vite la suite !.......2007-06-16
ROBERTA GAMBARINI, une voix qui me laisse sans voix, LA DEESSE DU SWING.
J'attends avec impatience, courant juin, la sortie de son CD "You are there" en duo avec HANK JONES.

Hoo, boy, is this "easy to love"!.......2007-06-09
In a landmark CD, more than seventy-seven gorgeous minutes long, Roberta Gambarini makes a breath-taking debut that should propel her to the top of the jazz world at a very young age. With her warm, full, alto voice and a deliberately understated accompaniment, often just a bass and piano, Gambarini does it all, from a capella intros in songs like "Easy to Love" (one of the best on the CD), to blues (in "Multi-Colored Blue," another standout), and lots of scat in "Lover Come Back to Me," which also features a terrific drum solo by Joe La Barbera. In "Centerpiece" she even duets with growly-voiced James Moody, the tenor sax player here, whose bass voice sets off her clear alto as she soars into soprano range.
Through out this terrific CD, Gambarini shows total control, suggesting, on many occasions, the work, of a very young Sarah Vaughan. Her diction, in which you can hear her T's and R's very clearly, and her often interesting phrasing, which enable her to convey a thought beyond the usual line length, sometimes at considerable speed, keep the listener intrigued on a level beyond sound. This is not to underestimate her gorgeous sound, but to point out that her technique enhances it in ways many other singers can only dream of.
I have listened to this CD so often, with so much pleasure, finding new things to like on each hearing, that it is difficult to choose a favorite track, but certainly "On the Sunny Side of the Street," not normally a song I like, would have to rank right up there. Here she plays with high notes and then plunges almost to bass range, using a great deal of scat, accompanied by bass (Chuck Berghofer) and wailing sax (James Moody), until she is vamping at the end of the song. "Multi-Colored Blue" is another great one, her scat set off by the bass and piano (Tamir Hendelman).
Very much in the tradition of the great women of jazz of the '50s through the '70s, Gambarini adds a personal touch and a young energy to many standards, creating her own sound and, undoubtedly, a jazz reputation among young singers. Sometimes so inspired by the instrumental melodies that she creates her own lyrics to accompany them, Gambarini does it all here. I cannot recommend a CD by a young singer more highly! n Mary Whipple
"Easy to Love" is a gem!.......2007-06-09
After so many repeated listenings in my car stereo, let me honestly state that Ms. Gambarini is among the best of the newer female jazz singers to arrive on the scene in perhaps the last 25 years. Her vocal style is purely her own, and should NOT be compared to the great singers that came before her.
This CD showcases Roberta and a fantastic array of musicians jamming it up - though every track is great, I have to cite two of my personal favorites - "Centerpiece" (with James Moody on sax and one heck of a scat duet with Roberta) and "Multi-Colored Blue," a Billy Strayhorn tune I've never heard of before.
Looking forward to the next album!!!

Album Description
An elegant and legendary vocal superstar, four-time Grammy honoree Roberta Flack's unmistakable delivery wraps a timeless R&B sound with beautiful flourishes of jazz, pop and soul. She first climbed to the top of the charts with her definitive version of "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." The very next year, "Killing Me Softly," her first duet with the late, great Donnie Hathaway took the same prize, and also hit #1. Also featuring her hit-making collaborations with Peabo Bryson and Maxi Priest, as well as many selections on which she shines solo, this must-have collection spotlights Flack's masterful song interpretation and rich emotional resonance.

Roberta has always been a favorite female singer of mine. When listening to her music, it's just as if she right here with me. I love the smooth tones, mellow voice and the energy she puts into her songs. She is my girl.
Thanks Roberta
Its about the music.......2007-06-11
The music speaks for itself, its a piece of classic history. The 3 weeks it took to arrive were unexceptable and make me very unlikely to purchase from Amazon in the near future.
BEST THAT'S OUT THERE.......2007-04-03
This is the simply the greatest Flack comp that's out there. Remastered hits from one of the great pop divas. The only slight is this-- there's perhaps too much of a focus on her 1980s work. An even-handed, comprehensive treatment would've included more stuff from the 1970s.
Flack's Best.......2007-04-02
This is her best CD yet. It has all the good songs that take me back to a better time.
I recommend this for all Roberta Flack fans.
She's One of the Best.......2007-01-04

Quiet Fire - Roberta Flack.......2007-01-03
This disc finds Roberta Flack at her peak -- flush with her initial success, and building on that with an album that combines soul and jazz feeling. It captures the times, employing themes of mass movement as well as individual passion. Highly recommended.
As good a smusic gets.......2006-02-28
Roberta Flack is as good as music gets and any chance to hear her sing is worthwhile. This album is more than worthwhile. Listen to "Will You Still Love Me Tommorow" and see if you can think of anything more haunting or beautiful. All the music here is supurb but that one song should be enough to satisfy anyone. This is an album you'll be sorry if you miss.
Completing a triumvirate of great Roberta Flack albums.......2002-07-26
"Quiet Fire", Roberta Flack's third solo album, has been unfairly overshadowed by the incandescent "First Take" and its masterful follow up, "Chapter Two". Unfairly because it is in every way an equal partner to its two luminous predecessors in constituting the third instalment of a triumvirate of great Roberta Flack albums. Significantly, even its immediate successor, the excellent "Killing Me Softly", doesn't quite measure up artistically with anything she did before that. Just as "Chapter Two" surprised with inspired covers of familiar standards, "Quiet Fire" serves up majestic versions of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water", Goffin & King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and the Gibb brothers' "To Love Somebody" which Nina Simone had a huge UK hit with in 1969. Unlike Aretha Franklin whose penchant for turning melodies inside out is legendary, Roberta's approach with a song is more conservative. She may slow it down a tad but always tries to preserve the melody and the cadence of the song. What she does is use her peerless phrasing and majestic performance to transform a song into something precious and personal. Listening to Roberta's voice build and rise above the piano is akin to a religious experience and it can't get more seriously churchy than "Go Up Moses", the opening track, which has Roberta feverishly incanting over a racuous rhythmn. Continuing in the same vein is "Sunday and Sister Jones", featuring the album's most powerful moments and a tour de force performance from Roberta that has to be heard to be believed. Winding up are sensitive treatments of "Let Them Talk" and the Dinah Washington standard "Sweet Bitter Love" which are at least equal, in my opinion, to the best versions ever recorded, including Aretha's in the case of the latter song. "Quiet Fire" is indeed the middle name of Roberta Flack and the sound of velvet melting...
Roberta's best... by far! And that's sayin something.......2002-04-27
Roberta Flack is as always incomparable but this one is just absolutely amazing. And I loved both of her earlier albums and thought that each of them was pretty close to perfect. But without question this album is the pinnacle of her talent and emotion.
Sweet Bitter Love is what I categorize as an A++ cut. Not just A+ but A double-plus. So much beauty, pain, and irony all in one cut. Just incredible! And personally I love Sunday and Sister Jones and To Love Somebody (A+) in and of themselves but some nights i'll play Sweet Bitter Love 3 or 4 times a night.
Cover to cover. High quality. Beauty and feeling. Depth and simplicity.
Just an out and out winner!
Sublime, sumptuous Ro Flack...........2000-03-23
...this is a listening experience like no other, Roberta Flack's "Quiet Fire". If her "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "Sweet Bitter Love" doesn't move you, then maybe your life is actually passing you by. Slow down and savor this one, it is truly a gift.

Relaxing and soothing music.......2007-07-04
First,I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Amazon for asking me to express my opinion about this CD.I have always enjoyed Roberta Flack's voice, but somehow I never got around to including two of her biggest hits("Killing Me Softly With His Song" and "Feel Like Makin' Love")in my collection. For many years,I've had the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and the album that contains it("First Take")as well as her biggest duets with the late Donny Hathaway in my collection and now I have all of these songs on one disc. When I'm feeling in a mellow mood,I've often thought of her songs. There is something truly remarkable about her voice which no other singer possesses. The closest comparison that I can think of is Aretha Franklin, and I'm sure that even the "Queen of Soul" herself must have felt challenged during Ms. Flack's '70s hit-making heyday. Now both stars' moment in the sun has faded and we're left with new performers like Nora Jones.Somehow though, the music of today just doesn't give me the same feeling as that of the past. You know,it's funny:I've often considered myself to be a heavy-metal type of guy,but when I'm in the mood for mellowing out,Ms. Flack's singing really hits the spot. This really is a great overview of her career, but it's not concise. There are several of her lesser known hits missing(which are available on another compilation titled,"The Best of Roberta Flack"),but it's more thorough than any other collection because it contains her most recent recordings(now well over a decade old). While it's unfortunate that her more contemporary recordings aren't of the same caliber as her '70s hits,it is nice to have her biggest recordings all in one place. If you're a fan of her earlier recordings as I am,who knows, you just may be pleasantly surprised by some of her later work.I can certainly appreciate her voice...it's just the arrangements that I'm not too crazy about. All in all, this disc is well worth investigating, especially for fans of the Quiet Storm genre.
It doesn't get any better than this........2007-05-03
You won't find a better selection of Roberta Flack's greatest hits on one disc. They did a wonderful job far as putting together this collaboration. I'm really enjoying them.
Soft and passionate.......2006-09-07
Mmmm. I just love Roberta Flack - her silky smooth voice, and those soft and passionate love songs. This album is indeed some of her best work, and it is a really sensual experience just to listen to it. Every once in a while, we pull out this album, light a fire, and share the couch - watching the flames, listening to the music, and falling in love.
If you want an album of passionate mood music to share with the one you love, then this is definitely the CD to get. We love it, and give it our highest recommendations!
(Review of Softly with These Songs: The Best of Roberta Flack)
An insistent infectiousness.......2006-06-18
There are certain songs which enter the mind and heart, and then are played over and over within us through our lifetimes. They have a certain kind infectiousness that just stays with us. One of those songs for me is Roberta Flack's 'Killing her softly with his song'.
Flack's voice never had for me the kind of distinctiveness of say a Nina Simone, or a Nancy Wilson but it does have a rich and calming pleasantness. I think of her and her best songs, including Jessie I Celebrate My Love For You,The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, as insistent rhythmic songs . And her voice is for me more a pleasant persistence than sensational Streisand or Garland - like emotional rollercoaster.
Remaster.......2006-03-30
Roberta Flack deserved a far better remastering of her lovely songs than is represented by this inferior product. The equalization is poor overall, but in Killing Me Softly the bass amplification is a crime. I will be more cognizant of Joe Gastwirt's work on future labels.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

GREAT DEBUT.......2007-04-03
The songs on this album are not typical of the smoother kind of material Flack would be singing in the 1970s. It's a jazz crossover featuring respected sidemen, who create a sound that sweeps, lifts and lulls. 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' only serves as the door. Open it.
First Take.......2007-03-24
Roberta Flack's voice is like a cool drink of water on a hot summer day -she's not a belter - she is an original whose voice can move my soul with its subtly & power.
This entire disc is exquisite but my two favorite tracks are: THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE & OUR AGES OR OUR HEARTS.
Other tracks that feature great arrangements and lyrical storytelling are: BALLAD OF SAD YOUNG MEN, ANGELITOS NEGROS & HEY, THAT'S NO WAY TO SAY GOODBYE.
The liner notes detailing Roberta's discovery make me sad for the music industry today because not many new singers are allowed to just be themselves - they have to conform. Would a Roberta Flack of today be allowed to grow & flourish as an artist? I don't think so but at least music lovers get to experience true artistry by adding this disc to their collection.
oh, what a album..........2006-12-21
Like a previous reviewer noted, this album is truly a "plug-and-play" album--one of those one-in-every-hundred (or more) albums whose every track is able to stand on its own as a fully-realized piece of artistic perfection. Everything here is flawless, from the deep-down-in-your-bones melody to Ms. Flack's incomparable voice and intelligent delivery (backed up by an exquisitely spare production). This album is one of the great monuments to human sadness, best enjoyed (perhaped "cherished" would be a better word) alone and with a willingness to feel good feeling sad.
First Take.......2006-03-09
When I was a kid, I remember listening to this album because my parents used to play it to death. Now that I'm grown, I see why. This album was true to the times and still is. Roberta has captured audiences for years. She is talented. I've seen her perform these songs live and all I can say is, "Wow!" There's nothing fake about her music and this album, like I said, hits it for the times we live in. From this first album you knew that she was a main stay.
A Timeless Gem of Soul Stirring Beauty.......2004-10-19
I was born the year that Roberta Flack was being discovered and only a couple of years before the release of this album. I've never had the priviledge of seeing her perform live like many of the reveiwers here either. But at the age of 12 as I rifled through my father's rather eclectic music collection...I found this 12" LP among his most treasured...and my appreciation for music changed forever. Some 24 years later, I've finally added it formerly to my own collection...it is truly a masterpiece of song. Before hitting play, release yourself from any pre-conceived perception of what her music will sound like, what genre this is supposed to be, or how you expect it to make you feel, and just....listen. Her golden voice seems to echo for miles around you, embracing your every emotion and spirit in its depth. Tryin' Times was the first song that arrested my soul at that tender age...and it remains the song that defines the album for me. The well known "First Time.." along with "Hey that's no way...." will leave you equally moved and sooner or later....singing along with her. Treat yourself to this classic as soon as possible. Sunday afternoon around the house...candlelit moments with a glass of merlot...allow yourself to be stirred deep into your soul. Just you and Roberta. You won't be disappointed.

Immortal Duet Album From Two Stellar Artists!!.......2006-07-27
I was 8 yr old when this album came out and
it got heavy rotation from my mother and her freinds!
The musical marriage of Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack
was just musical perfection!
Both were prodigious talents vocal-wise and
in their fluency as instrumentalists!
There are a few covers on here..the only one I
could've done without was their rendition of Aretha's
classic "Baby, I Love You" because they brought
absolutely nothing to it.
But make no errors!
They absolutely put their foot in "I Who Have Nothing"
with it's deep bluesy longing that just captures the
pathos perfectly of wanting someone who doesn't want
you as much as you want them! (Woo!--Timeless!)
Donny Hathaway's rendition of "For All We Know" has
become the stuff of legend, and quite a few people
actually think that he was the originator
of this standard!
Now that's when you know that an artist has put
their mark on a song!...When everybody just assumes
that their rendition is the definitive one!
(Kinda like Luther and "A House Is Not A Home"
or "Superstar"!!)
Donny's voice was like buttah!
That man was just so brilliant that it hurts!
I also like what he and Roberta did on
"You've Lost That Loving Feeling"..
a kind of early 70's R&B / Jazz experiment that
opened it up more.
But now, nobody can top the Righteous Brothers version!
Donny & Roberta's version of "You've Got A Freind"
has also become one of legend!--(Just wonderful!)
"Come Ye Dissconsolate" is a church standard and
both Donny and Roberta put some down-home stank on it!
They both were raised up in the black gospel tradition
and it truly shows on this track!
Now on to the original compositions of this album...
"Be Real Black For Me" was a smooth but militant song
about not having to change your african-american
attributes to appeal to the object of your affection.
They did it to death, and any fan of either
Donny or Roberta would be remiss if they
didn't like this one!
"Where Is The Love" was a huge hit and won a
grammy back in 1972 for the duo!
It is another song that just lives on and on!
"When Love Has Grown" has a smooth early 70's
Carpenters meets Fifth Dimension kind of groove
and the two give a laid back but nonetheless
stirring performance on it.
"Mood" is a very dark and moving classical instrumental
piece that shows off their instrumental genius
and well as their Howard University School of
Music training.
All-n-All, this album is just plain CLASSIC!!
Though Donny's been gone 27 yrs now and is a legend
of epic proportions whose influence to black music
as a vocalist / songwriter / arranger & instrumentalist
is immeasurable, and of course Roberta Flack is
no slouch either! This was the first of their
timeless and perfect pairing, and a must-have for any
fan of great music!--Bar None!!
good music but they both have done better work.......2006-03-04
I WAS NOT HAS ENAMORED WITH THIS EFFORT BY THESE TWO ARTISTS.
I HAVE HEARD BETTER COMING FROM THESE VERY PROLIFIC SONGWRITERS/
SINGERS. I'D SAY 50% WAS GOOD 25% MEDIOCRE AND 25% NOT SO GOOD
ASIDE FROM THE MATERIAL THEIR VOICES WERE NEVER BETTER.
Absolute Classic.......2005-02-20
I can't say that I was around when this album was first released, but many current soul artists have invoked the names of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway so I figured I'd check this album out. This album is a wonderful collection of standards and original compositions. Roberta and Donny have made each of these songs their own, the emotion is overflowing. The instrumentation and vocal arrangements are superb, they help this album transcend genre. I'd recommend this album to just about anyone.
a very warm and beautiful album.......2004-10-22
this 1972 classic album came out when i was 8 going on 9 years
old.roberta flack and donny hathaway represent the best of
classic duos in music history.my favorite tracks on this album
are:"be real black for me" the hit single-"where is the love"
and the very beautiful "when love has grown" and the very dark
beautiful instrumental piano piece entitled "mood"/it is genius
on how beautiful the way they have the songs "where is the love"
and "when love has grown" back 2 back.this is a very warm and
beautiful album from 2 music legends.roberta&donny along with
marvin&tammi and ashford&simpson and stevie&syreeta and rick&teena are the measuring stick 2 follow by.duets of this caliber in music will never be again.as i've said before, this is a very warm and beautiful album...
Perfection..............2004-04-08
This is a perfect album - the artists perform magnificent vocal and piano harmonies; the musical styles move effortlessly from country, to R&B, to religious, to classical - so that with each hearing the listener is taken on a new and exciting journey. This CD is a timeless, masterpiece - a treasure. It is a tribute to the extraordinary talents of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway.

Chapter Two.......2007-04-10
Get this before it goes out of print. Roberta Flack is an artist who personafies excellence. Such a beautiful "touch" on the piano and velvety smoothness in her voice. She is truly one of the best entertainers ever. My personal favorite, next to Sam Cooke. I wish this CD were a DVD.
fine as wine..........2007-01-28
This woman's voice has convinced me that there is a God...it could not have happened by chance.
When I was 15 a friend played side one of this almost everyday, I was in a summer enrichment program (Upward Bound)at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and to this day when I hear 'Do what you gotta do' I melt. I'm still in search of that baffled dream so I can come on back and see her when I can...what a woman, what a voice, what a soul...we are blessed to have ears to hear and hearts to feel...go on 'Berta
Roberta Flack Chapter two still the best.......2004-11-18
I first received this Album as a gift in 1972 and fell in love with it from the start. I played it so much that the record is now scratched but I still have it along with the cover. I never thought about checking to see if it had been made on a CD when I saw it on Target.com I had to have it and ordered it. I know that I will be getting hours of listening enjoyment as I did in the 1970's. I recomend Roberta Flack Chapter Two to anyone if you don't buy another Roberta Flack CD ever you must hear this one.
One of the 5 Greatest Albums of All Time, Period........2003-05-29
I was a child when this album came out and it has haunted me ever since. Turn the lights out, light a fire in the fireplace, select your favorite bottle of wine, kick the kids out, curl up on the couch with your loved one, put this album on and enjoy. Hell, this albums so good you don't need anyone. Kick everyone out. "Reverend Lee", with good reason, is the classic of this album. You'll feel Roberta's warm breath on your neck as she sings of sin and lust. It'll take you back in time to that someone whom you couldn't resist, even though you knew better. Other favorites are "Do What You Gotta Do", "Gone Away", and "Until It's Time For You To Go". Those three songs along with "Just Like A Woman" are beautiful in their meaning and the mood they create. "Business Goes On As Usual" is placed last. It's a haunting anti-war song and you'd think it wouldn't fit in with the other songs of love and regret but it does. That's because it too is about love and the lose of that loved one. My personal favorite is "Let It Be Me". Like "Impossible Dream", Roberta's voice, the tempo, what I believe is a French Horn in the background, all combine to make you realize how beautiful songs can be, even songs you've heard a hundred times, when given to a vocal talent such as Roberta Flack. After you've recharged your soul with this album, let the spouce and kids back in and give them a hug.
Roberta's Greatest Work..........2003-04-16
I remembered my parents playing this album and I just HAD to have it! I am not disappointed...as an adult, I can REALLY appreciate the soulfulness, haunting beauty of her music and superb talent of Roberta Flack. The entire CD is great but if you only buy it for "Reverend Lee", "Let It Be Me" and "Gone Away" its worth it! I only wish when Roberta performs live that she would sing some of these classics ... they are her greatest work!

Remarkable!!!.......2007-06-28
Roberta Gambarini is one of the finest jazz singers of her generation. She recalls an age before the pop-tinged approach that marks so many contemporary jazz vocals. She phrases like Carmen, scats like Ella, and can improvise through the changes like a horn player. Her ballads will bring a tear. This album is as pure as music gets: just voice and piano. If there is any sense in the universe, she will go down as one of the greats.
Gambarini does it all on this moody CD for quiet nights........2007-06-23
Following up on the huge success of "Easy to Love," Roberta Gambarini unleashes a new collection of fourteen songs, including three sung live at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. Limiting the accompaniment to just the piano of Hank Jones for the first eleven tracks (until the live recordings from Perugia), she is very much a cabaret singer here, singing mostly slow, sad ballads with her gorgeous alto, and varying the phrasing to give new emphasis to the lyrics. There are no vocal pyrotechnics here, as she concentrates on the song itself, rather than taking it into new realms with improvisation and variation. The result is a wonderfully moody CD which has moments of excitement but only a few hints of her huge talent with scat and high energy jazz variations.
Almost sixty-seven minutes long, the CD features ten ballads, interspersed with three songs of swing, blues, uptempo jazz, and one that is almost completely scat. Among the more interesting songs, "When Lights Are Low" introduces the first hints of jazz, as Gambarini sings a semi-uptempo version with a slight suggestion of scat, keeping the mood quiet. "Suppertime" is bluesy and slow, a dramatic song in which she mourns the fact that her man "ain't comin' home no more." In the uptempo "Squeeze Me," she keeps to the standard interpretation until the middle, in which she introduces quiet variations without ever wailing, while Jones plays old-fashioned rhythms, until she turns to brief scat.
"Something to Live For" is one of her most outstanding ballads, with lovely interpretations of the lyrics and interesting chromatic jumps. The extensive beginning to "Body and Soul" is sung a capella. "Lush Life" appears twice, each version a long, aching lament for a kind of life that has vanished for her, with the live version almost seven minutes long, a mini-drama set to music. For me the show-stopper of the CD is "Cool Breeze," a jazz song she does at the live concert. Quick-paced, with a jazzy beat, the song is all scat, with Gambarini complimenting a terrific piano solo and showing her jazz talents to the full.
Gambarini is more an actress with interpretation than she appeared to be in "Easy to Love," more the kind of cabaret singer one can picture next to the piano in a smoke-filled room late at night, surrounded by lonely people, and less the jazz singer. Her enormous talent for interpretive jazz and her ability to wail with hints of Sarah Vaughan in her voice are kept in check here, in favor of creating a moody recording for quiet nights at home. n Mary Whipple
Enormous Talent.......2007-05-13
I've said it before: Ms. Krall can move over; Ms. Jones can sit down; Ms. Monheit can get outa town. Roberta Gambarini is the real deal to which wannabe jazz vocalists should aspire. She attacks a lyric with such skill and style that she creates a new and different take on American songbook standards; indeed, she was born to sing those standards. I'll bet that Ella, Sarah, and Peggy are all smiles for Roberta. Nat's got to be proud of her rendering of Lush Life. This lady has a once in a lifetime voice with a sense of timing and expression to match her vocal abilities. Years from now jazz singers will be attempting to do "takes" on Roberta.

State of the Art of Conducting.......2007-07-10
Just a few minutes of listening to Il Complesso Barocco, conducted by Alan Curtis, will convince you that there really is an "authentic" Baroque style, evidenced by grace and flexibility, resulting in passion. This performance is the best of the several recent CD releases of Handel oratorios and operas, far more polished than Gardiner's Agrippina, Abete's Fernando, or Petros Magoulas's Arianna. The latter two in particular sound stuffy and bulky, like grandmama's oaken furniture, in comparison.
Exceptional cast..........2007-05-27
A well directed Baroque opera and an exceptional cast. We have here some of the best Baroque singers. Marijana Mijanovic in particular : she dares to sing in her very own way, originally, taking risks only few artists dare to run and the result is nothing short of outstanding. The dark voiced contralto surprised with her unusual timbre as well as her unique way of vocalising (let us not forget that she's fully capable of vocalising in a more traditional fashion as in the Arcadian duets directed by Haim, but rather she has the courage to make the arias hers... special stand outs to her). Joyce DiDonato sings well and has a fine technique, but I don't find her singing quite original. Nevertheless she's exciting and shines as well here. In other words, the performances of miss Mijanovic are not only outstanding, but of the most surprisingly original. If you've not heard of that contralto, get ready to be moved that androgynous voice which will most certainly leave you perplexed.
Get it for DiDonato.......2007-05-27
The performance by Joyce DiDonato is worth the price of this album. The rest of the cast is moderate to great. The work as a whole is worth hearing. Again though, it is the contribution of Joyce DiDonato that really stands out.
