Point of Information.......2007-07-06
Folks, please read the recording data! This album does not present merely the "older Sills" of 1975. Tracks 10 to 13 were recorded in February 1961, when Sills was about three months shy of 32 years old. To hear her any younger on disc, you have to go to her splendid recording of *The Ballad of Baby Doe*, released in 1959. (If anyone knows of still earlier recordings, please holler!) So these 1961 tracks alone make the album priceless, especially since it offers vastly better sound than the slightly boomy acoustic of *Baby Doe*.
For me, the initial main attraction here was the Granados, and it was a hallelujah moment when I spotted this CD in the bins almost 10 years ago. While this disc represents the commercial first release of the *Goyescas* selections, they received limited issue around December 1963 on a holiday-bonus LP ("The Sound of Genius 1963") from the Columbia Record Club.
That LP was my introduction to Sills, and it made me fall in love with her voice. It was always a special treat to play her vocal track for those who had no idea it existed and watch their astonishment as Beverly's voice floated through sonic space like the very nightingale she sings about. It is simply some of the loveliest, most haunting singing I've ever heard. To get two additional tracks from the same recordings sessions -- especially "Estrellita" -- was an unexpected blessing.
So get this CD for the last three tracks, if nothing else (track 10 is purely orchestral). They capture Sills at a magical moment. Even if you like nothing else on the disc (and I think you'll like much more), you can claim these three special treasures for a mere pittance. How much more precious are they, now that she has gone on to sing, we pray, in other realms.
Estrellita.......2006-12-07
The incomparable Beverly Sills beautifuly sings here a true bouquet of songs in French and Spanish. A pleasure to the ear.
Estrellita is not a Spanish song as claimed by some commentators, but a Mexican one, whose author is the late Manuel M. Ponce.
Ugly.......2004-05-20
Sills screeching a mezzo-role? She already ruined belcanto with her puny, fake screeching!
Carmen.......2004-04-26
She DID sing Michaela. And it's said that she also did Carmen. But if she did, she was completely miscast. She also did Aida, live-recording of her Aida is...interesting. Anyway, Sills rules in the French rep, esp. as Manon.
Excellent disc.......2004-03-21
This is a fantastic disc and shows Beverly Sills at her interpretive best with zesty, go-for-broke vocalism that is truly wonderful to hear.
Sills DID sing Carmen. She sang it on tour in the 1950s.

Set the table, open the wine, light some candles. Slip on this disc. Let the gentle sounds of André Rieu's slippery fiddle and fur-tipped orchestra lull you with classical music's most memorable soothers, from "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Plasir D'Amour" to the largo from Dvorák's New World Symphony and Nino Rota's "A Time for Us," which opens and closes the collection. Lightweight stuff, yes, but ingenuously arranged and performed, and the ribbon of reverb that surrounds the orchestra will please erstwhile Mantovani fans. --Jed Distler

Romantic Moments.... Andre Rieu.......2007-02-24
Love this music & Andre Rieu is popular with not only my husband & myself but with our children & parents. It's fun & a wonderful way to introduce the classics to any & all lovers of music.
Andre Rieu - Romantic Moments.......2006-08-31
Oh, So beautiful---- every track!!!!! My personal favorite has to be the soothing SERENATA. So, get comfy, put on the headphones so you won't miss a single note...... Andre Rieu's violin is magical!!!!!
Decent playing, lousy arrangements.......2005-11-11
Well, apparently I'm in the minority, but I found this CD disappointing. I bought it because I fell in love with "Song to the Moon" when I heard it on the radio, but this track and possibly the "Londonderry Air" are the only ones worth listening to. Although the melodies chosen for this album are indeed beautiful, the arrangements (Rieu's own) are poorly done. I would much more highly recommend Joshua Bell's Romance of the Violin, which has a similar theme, albeit restricted to classical tunes.
Forget the hype, this is great music.......2005-08-04
Try not to think about the cheesy "Andre Rieu in Tuscany" PBS special. This is a very pleasing program of selections of great romantic melodies, beautifully arranged. Few people are going to purchase a CD of Dvorak's Rusalka just to hear "Song to the Moon" so this is the place to hear it. And it's even better on Rieu's violin than in the original vocal version. Rieu plays perfectly in tune (not always easy in the higher registers of the violin) and has exquisite phrasing that brings out the musicality of even the most over-recorded selections.
Rhieu's arrangements (with Jo Huijts) have hints of "beautiful music" (think Ray Coniff) but only hints, and the result is very tasteful. For example, the piano obligato under the strings on "O mio babbino caro" makes you wish that Puccini had thought of that.
This is a wonderful album to listen to while relaxing and would make a great gift for someone who appreciates classical music but doesn't have specific preferences.
Music That Will Touch Your Heart.......2004-12-05
This one is one of my favorites of Andre Rieu. It's very romantic. It reminded me of my honeymoon in Vienna. I like to play it at home a lot. It lifts the spirit and touches the heart. Made me cry one time.

The international crossover success of tenor Andrea Bocelli has spawned any number of imitators on both sides of the Atlantic. But this collection of romantic arias and duets with violinist-conductor Lorin Maazel (who also arranges and helms the London Symphony Orchestra here) proves once again that the classical canon still offers ample room for compelling reinvention without nettlesome pop affectations. In reviving a genre (violin and vocal) largely dormant since the days of Caruso, Bocelli has taken some rewarding liberties with Rodrigo's "En Aranjuez can ta amor" and forged Liszt's familiar Liebestraume No. 3 into "Sogno D'Amore" with new, self-penned lyrics. Maazel's warm, evocative violin obligatos and sensitive, sympathetic arrangements infuse this tenor's showcase not only with unabashed romance, but as their lively romp through Tosti's "Malia" demonstrates, a sense of joyous fun. An album for romantics of all ages and persuasions--and one that gratifyingly demonstrates that crossing over is hardly the same as selling out. Enhanced CD includes a mini-documentary with comments by Bocelli and Maazel, as well as links to a more comprehensive interview with the tenor. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fine idea, weak execution.......2007-04-26
Lorin Maazel, in the self-indulgent pat on the back that passes for linear notes, manages to make one good point: the tenor-violin duet was once a fine tradition worthy of exploring afresh. As an effort to revive this dusty tradition, this disc is not successful.
Maazel seems to enjoy the feel of the violin under his chin, and generally produces elegant sounds. The orchestration, which he tells us in his notes evolved amidst a hectic schedule of conducting and rehearsing Don Carlo and Don Giovanni, is basic and generally inoffensive. Good thing he tells the listener of his busy schedule, or one would have to be harsher with his sometimes dreary musical arrangements.
Andrea Bocelli is something of a controversial figure in some circles. I am a picky listener, and suffer from the maniacal ailments that afflict the opera buff. Still, I have always enjoyed Bocelli's popular recordings. I like pleasant tunes sung by a full, clear tenor voice. Having said this, I find his operatic recordings lamentable.
Though not opera per se, Bocelli sounds over-taxed by the repertory at hand (mostly lovely 19th century songs). Each track is unworthy of comparison with past performances by operatic greats-- Pavarotti, Carreras, Gigli, Di Stefano, and Schipa come to mind. Bocelli's voice is strained, and he offers nothing resembling the grace required by these three-minute masterpieces.
Those who are in love with Bocelli's voice will no doubt enjoy this recording. Still, I strongly urge exploring this repertory as it is presented by far more capable performers, and far better endowed voices.
He's magnificent.......2007-03-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, especially some favorites that I haven't heard in years. I wholeheartedly recommend.
Romantic sounds!.......2007-01-12
Adrea's voice continues to enthrall me! Even if you don't understand Italian, you will enjoy this album. Highly recommended.
Simply beautiful!.......2006-07-09
I wont repeat what others with positive reviews already said. Just know that none of Bocelli's CD's have ever disappointed me, and if you are looking for as fine a piece of work as possible (thus far), THIS and "Romanza" are it.
Average Bocelli at best.......2005-01-20
I bought this Bocelli album because I truly wanted to hear him perform "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my all time favorites. While I do love Bocelli I wasn't completely impressed with the entire CD. This is not the best I've heard from Andrea and his voice is not great throughout the CD. I do enjoy it though. He's one of the few artists I can listen to these days without getting a headache.

I bought this CD for one reason...Bocelli sings "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my absolute all time favorites. This isn't the best of Andrea. His voice is sometimes weak and warbly. That said, I enjoy this CD for easy listening and simply because it doesn't give me a headache.

A Collector's Item.......2007-03-09
This is a different voice than you hear on recordings of "The Three Tenors." Of course, it's his earlier years, but the light, lyrical quality of his voice is amazing. Thank goodness for recordings, and digital remastering. I love this CD.
STUPENDOUS!!!!.......2005-06-20
I have a Carreras-recording of Tosca from 1980 and up till now I thought it was the ultimate recording of "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle". I honestly thought that no one could sing these arias better. And in a way I'm right. The only one that did it was himself - a few years earlier.....(The two arias in this "golden years cd" are taken from a -76 recording of Tosca). And after listening to these songs I can't imagine that anyone dare say that he is/was the weakest of the three tenors. In my opinion he possesses something that the others don't. (I won't tell you what it is - listen and find out yourself). Even if his voice has changed over the years (and I mean changed, not declined..) something remains unchangeable and that is his ability to evoke emotions. No one can deliver a line like him. And that's something that's going to stay with him forever, because what makes his singing so special comes from within. It's not dependent on the quality of the voice. But in the songs on this cd his voice is pure gold.
Even though I like the whole album, some of the songs on the first cd (which consists of operatic arias) stand out to me - like "Una furtiva lagrima", "donna non vidi mai", "vesti la giubba" and "nessun dorma" (Sorry Pavarotti - José is way ahead of you interpreting this song. It's not enough to sing it on full blast....) Here's also the loveliest rendition of "Forse la soglio attinse". In 1975 the audience at La Scala in Milan went absolutely crazy after he had sung this aria. I have a recording from that night and it sounds as if they are standing on their seats, cheering and applauding. And it's almost like I want to do the same myself after listening to his singing on this album. And in the song "dein ist mein ganzes hertz" he makes me believe that his whole heart really is mine......In my opinion Carreras has the best rendition of this song ever. No one else comes even close to this one. And I mustn't forget his "che gelida manina" from La Bohême. I have the -79 recording it's taken from and it's the ultimate Bohême ever.
The second cd has a "lighter" repertoire with songs from composers like Tosti, Cardillo, Lara and others. My personal favourites here are "Core n'grato", "Ideale" and "Granada". In my opinion no one sings these songs like Carreras. Or rather - no one sings like Carreras. Period!
His singing will no doubt give you goosebumps all over and make your hair stand on end. If not, I bet you're either a Pavarotti or Domingo-fan....
a great partial overview of an extraordinary career.......2005-04-09
Now a household name by being one of the Three Tenors alongside Pavarotti and Domingo, Carreras' finest recordings were actually done in the 1970s, when his voice had a brilliance and luster that few singers have equaled. Born in Spain in '46, Carreras was a child prodigy, and by his late 20s was a shining star in all the major opera houses. Tragically, in '87, he learned he had leukemia, a disease he battled and won, going on to greater fame than ever before.
Though his voice is powerful and full of beauty, those with keen ears will detect his voice losing a tiny bit of its magnificence starting in the early 80s, and one wonders if the stress and exhaustion of stardom contributed to this as well as to the illness, or whether it was because the seeds of leukemia were taking root.
CD One is the operatic disc, and the two most sublime cuts are both from '76, Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle" (Tosca), and Verdi's "Forse la scoglia attinse" (Un Ballo in Maschera). Another track I adore is the heavenly Lehar "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" (Das Land des Lachelns), from 1978, and few have performed this popular piece with more loveliness.
CD Two is in a lighter vein, and starts with a stupendous rendition of Ariel Ramirez' "Kirie" (Misa Criolla), sung softly and with extraordinary tenderness and artistry.
There are lots of heavenly melodic Italian songs, like "O Sole Mio", and a few in English like the song made famous by Lanza (who according to the liner notes, inspired Carreras to be a singer when he saw "The Great Caruso" at the age of six) "Be My Love " (Brodszky/Cahn).
The foldout insert has complete track list info and liner notes, and mention must be made of the incredible, sensitive sepia portrait of this handsome singer on the cover. Total playing time for CD One is 75'32, and for CD Two 75'47.
A must for Carreras fans, and anyone who appreciates the finest in operatic voices.
What a beauty!.......2005-01-13
This great double CD set shows us the true Carreras. All the great songs and arias are on this(although I would've liked to hear pourquoi me reveiller) and in pure Carreras style.
Some of the opera recordings are live, and that adds a lot to them. Both sides of the CDs have fantastic repetoire.
Definately a worthy buy!
He answered my SOS - with his soul.......2004-02-07
I came upon the genius of Mr. Carrera quite accidentally. I was in Warsovie (Warsaw), Poland. My purse was stolen, so I lay miserable and penniless and alone in the home of my Ex, with a copy of the Vampire Chronicles and Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground (only books in English). The maddening drone of the hydro-dam nearby moved me to turn on the radio to my favorite college station. I was no opera buff, so when they announced that they would cover some Enrique Caruso songs, I was panicked to find a station that I could relate to.
Jose Carrera covered the full gambit of Caruso's classics. They must've played him for 2 hours straight. I was mesmerized. I could have touched him and put his hand to my face, his voice was so close. He sang with such emotion and outcry that I wanted to take him into my arms and console him. "Damn" is all that I could verbalize, when the program ended.
I'm not into Jose Carrera singing pop tunes, but he completely blows me away when he's in his own element. I was never feeling the three tenors, and although I remember Pavarotti and our school taking us to the Met in the 80's, Jose Carrera, is an animal of an entirely different species. He's one of a few artists that I can only listen to on my Bose, all alone, to fully appreciate the gravity of talent.

Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09
For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

Surprised.......2004-05-04
I am an opera fan and normally detest the sound of non-opera singers trying out their pipes on Mozart, Verdi, Rossini, Puccini, etc. I bought this disc years ago and it's been collecting dust. But since breaking it out, I can't stop listening. Nana's voice doesn't have the classical quality that I am used to from the likes of Kiri Te Kanawa and Mirella Freni, but she makes up for it with her unique style, although she gets a tad shrill on a couple of the songs. But considering she was about 55 when this was recorded it's amazing she still had such range and quality. The arrangements, orchestrations and chorus are breathtaking. Rodrigo's Concierto Aranjuez, with words, was a real surprise. The second movement has to be one of the all-time beautiful melodies ever written and what a perfect voice to sing it. Verdi's "Song for Liberty" from Nabucco is my favorite cut on the disc but there isn't one dud out of 18 tracks and that in itself is a marvel.
You will be transfixed..........2003-07-23
...when you hear Nana Mouskouri's rendition of the Bellini aria from Norma. This artist has been recording for at least 30 years or so-- and I have yet to hear her sing something badly-- she sings in Greek, English, French-- every language-- with astonishing beauty. Excellent
Soft, Real, and Very Good.......2001-10-17
I am sorry to say that I had never heard of Nana before. That is to my detriment. This album is supurb. The music is real, the orchestration is very good, and Nana's voice is unequaled for this type of music. Based exclusively on this album, I plan to buy every one of her CD's I can find.
An elegant classical offering from a pop icon.......1999-11-19
I'm program director of a classical music radio station, and this disc has become a favorite with our morning drive audience -- less idiosyncratic than Sarah Brightman's popular but over-hyped offerings, and Mouskouri's voice is richer (though with less power) as well. Mouskouri has always been more popular in Europe than the US but has had a strong following in America anyway. Even her most ardent fans must have been surprised when this disc was released a few years ago, for it is a surprisingly elegant and moving interpretation of classical melodies. A few retain their original lyrics, and Mouskouri has added lyrics to some works that were originally instrumental, but everything is handled with grace and style. And that voice! Fluid, silky, always balanced -- it's a wonderful disc.

In many respects, Lily Pons was the Galli-Curci of her generation: a winning combination of good looks, charm, an appealing and non-confrontational timbre, and easy facility in the stratosphere. Those who learned the "Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor or the "Bell Song" from Lakmé via the original 78s back in the 40s will be bowled over by the vivid detail and lack of background noise in these stunning Sony restorations. First-time listeners will marvel at her effortless passagework and high notes (she often transposed her arias up on records); but may be put off by a slight thinness in the middle register (not evident in her Odeon recordings from the late 20s), sketchy intonation at times, and expedient aspirating in downward scales. Although these selections encompass a gamut of stylistic and emotional contrasts, you'd scarcely know it from the singer's pleasant but characterless interpretations, which tickle the ear without quite racking the brain. --Jed Distler

Highly recommended.......2007-07-09
This could have been recorded yesterday, the sound quality is excellent and without blemish. By far the best recordings of Pons I have, and I would like to have others. She reminds me of Jo, separation of notes, clear, real trills, a range to rival Sumac, flexibility to perfection, and always that today neglected once standard fare of the coloratura, the requisite leap to the top note at the end of an aria. And a pretty sound. I love this album.

Holy Batdisk Batman.......2005-03-11
I came across this cd soundtrack of the original 1960's Batman film quite by accident. Over 65 minutes of pure batmusic by Nelson Riddle and all in chronological order too. Yes Batfans! its all there, from the main title right through to the end title. But thats not the end. Holy Bonus Bat Tracks! One of them is the original Batman Theme to the television series composed by Neal Hefti(no cover versions here). It comes with a sixteen page booklet giving a potted history of the film and its stars. This cd is going to be worth a fortune because this album is limited to only 3000 copies so hurry !

Those who prefer 17th- and 18th-century music performed in a "historically correct" manner may balk, but these "old songs and arias" ("arie antiche") are beautifully presented and sung. It's not that Ramón Vargas approaches them in a verismo style or that he overexclaims them. Rather, he sings with ardor, generous portamento, and a Romantic, cushioned voice filled with vibrato and expression. At the same time, Vargas embellishes the vocal line in very much the style popular and proper 200 and 300 years ago, and these embellishments are attractive and in excellent taste. But the voice is the thing, and it's gorgeous and beautifully used. The opening, earliest song (for instance) is sung sweetly and softly from start to finish--it's hard to recall the last time one heard such sustained elegant, gentle vocalism from a major tenor. Vargas never overstates his case, and by refusing to do so, sells us these brief, lovely items one at a time. Another winner from this unique tenor. --Robert Levine

misguiding.......2007-04-09
Those who love Mr Vargas' singing will probably be satisfied.
His voice is beautiful and this repertoire is most apt to show it to advantage. His technique is good (some problems with pianos), his agility commendable.
Those instead looking for an adequate rendering of old arias will find this compilation lacking: he chose (as declared in the booklet) to ignore philologicas and stylistical issues, singing them beautifully but also romantically, as late Donizetti or early Verdi. Problem is that this, to educated ears, sounds incredibly wrong, nearly inaudible.
A pity: with more attention to style this could have been a useful compilation for singing students too. Such as it is, it is only good for Mr Vargas' fans.
He missed the point.......2005-11-12
I am sorry I bought this album. I did not listen to the sound bytes first...my bad! Vargas croons his way through music that has been orchestated out of all recognition. It sounds syrupy and sentimental, not intensely emotional. The Carissimi is a joke! The Scarlatti is painful to hear. There are too many fine performances of 17th & 18th century music out there for this to pass muster. For example, if you want to hear Bononcini as he should be sung, listen to Martin Oro or Gerard Lesne. My recommendation is a most emphatic "NO".
A (perhaps too) romantic approach to some old favorites.......2003-11-27
Ramon Vargas is probably the most elegant and classy tenor singing today. If I may be forgiven an ethnic cliche, the Mexican singer's voice reminds me of dulce del leche ice cream - rich, sweet, and smooth as caramel. Having sung both on stage and on records a wide operatic repertory ranging from bel canto to French works to Puccini and Verdi, Vargas now turns his efforts to this album of arie antiche entitled (rather unimaginatively, I think) `Nel Mio Cuore' - In My Heart. Nearly all lovers of classical vocal music are familiar with the songs represented on this disc; many singers have recorded them and just about everybody who has ever had a voice lesson has studied at least some of them. The defining feature of these songs - which is why they are used by voice students - is that while it is easy to learn the basics of singing them, it takes true expertise to handle all their technical challenges and to bring out all their nuances. If some misguided performance practice decisions make the CD a less than total success, Vargas' vocal beauty, excellent technique and total commitment make this a mostly very enjoyable listen.
As Vargas says in his brief comments, he wants to sing this music in a more 'romantic', (i.e. unrestrained and overtly emotional) manner than many other performers do, to bring a 21st century sensibility to mostly 17th and 18th century music. Vargas as a child was a soloist in the choir of the Basilica Guadalupe of Mexico City, and it was standard procedure there to sing sacred music from this and earlier periods that way. While this approach to the actual singing works very well, I am not entirely happy with the decision to use a small 'salon' orchestra instead of the usual piano or harpsichord, and I suspect many will agree with me on this. I don't object to orchestral arrangements on principle - the arrangements of the arie antiche recorded by Richard Tucker on the superb CD 'The Soul of Italy' work very well, particularly the delightful 'Gia sole del Gange'. On this disc, however, few of the arrangements (by Sascha Goetzel and Joseph Turrin) really enhance the music or make it more interesting, and sometimes they just get in the way. Perhaps in an actual salon or concert setting, this wouldn't be as big a problem. In general, the best arrangements are the most quiet and unobtrusive ones, such as 'Nina' or 'Plaisir d'amour', allowing Vargas to sing softly and tenderly instead of just ardently. The major exception to this is actually the best track on the disc, `Sebben crudele', where the music helps Vargas' anguish and pain reach appropriately operatic proportions. Gluck's `O del mio dolce ardor', an actual opera selection often sung with orchestra, also responds well to this treatment. For most of the other selections, however, it might be helpful to play individual selections or a few at a time instead of the entire album at once, and I wouldn't advise playing it at much more than medium volume.
The good news, though, is that Vargas sings this music with real passion, warmth, and style. The arrangements may require him to sing the music more loudly than many singers do but he never forces or shouts - his heart may be on his sleeve, but is sincere and never vulgar. He pays close attention to the meaning of the words and is musically sensitive and expressive. His Italian diction is excellent, although his French could be a bit crisper. His long experience with bel canto operas makes runs and articulated grace notes easy for him, and he inserts some lovely decorations. The musicians, led by pianist Katherine Chu, do an excellent job with what they are given, and Vargas should actually have been credited as their conductor. I note particularly the beautiful wind playing in 'Teco, si, vengo anch'io'.
In addition to Vargas' comments, there are also notes on the music and full texts and translations. However, I thought the tone of the notes was just a bit too defensive of the more 'modern' approach. All the musicians are listed by name, a nice touch.
The sheer beauty of Vargas' voice, his enthusiasm and his sincerity should set aside most objections to the performance decisions made here. However, I would definitely recommend a more 'traditional' piano-or-harpsichord-accompanied set of this music alongside this if you don't already have one. Cecilia Bartoli's 'Se Tu M'Ami' is essential, and I would also suggest that if you are interested in hearing the music sung by a tenor, you should listen to Alfredo Kraus, especially since many opera lovers consider Vargas to be an heir to this late great Spaniard. Also, Vargas' 'Canzoni' album, from a live concert in Mexico City, shows how wonderful his voice sounds with piano in Italian and Mexican songs - including 'Gia sole del gange' sung in much the same way it is here. It's at super-budget price, too. Still, `Nel Mio Cuore' will give admirers of this lovely tenor the opportunity to wallow in a wonderful voice and experience the heart of an artist.
Adequate.......2003-05-20
Lovely music, but somehow I find it not very involving. Listen to it some, if possible and see if it really is what you are looking for.
Highly Recommended.......2003-03-10
Every beginning classical singer works on these arias that Vargas chose for this album, so naturally, they are often heard and almost always abused. Vargas makes them music again. Absolutely stunning work. He is the real thing - voice, brains and musicality. This combination is sadly lacking in many of todays top operatic stars.
