The Jacques Loussier Trio has recorded numerous albums applying European jazz sensibilities to classical material, following and refining the path laid down by Dave Brubeck in his crossover material of the '50s. Combining a feathery piano touch with a swinging rhythm section, Loussier reveals the affinity between the two worlds. Loussier reworks pieces by Scarlatti, Marcello, Albinoni, and three by Handel (including the lengthy Concerto in F Major for Organ) effectively, more concerned with subtly outlining harmonic contours than exhibiting the ornamentation usually associated with baroque music. This approach produces tasteful and elegant French jazz, ideal for the cozy pub or the luxury-liner lounge. Additionally, the trio deserves a warm round of applause for rendering Pachabel's over-worked Canon in D Major in a fresh manner. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
Crossover compromise.......2007-01-04
When I first heard individual cuts from this CD I was intriqued by the synthesis of jazz and classical styles. I was also pursuaded initially by the reviews from Loussier's fans who contextualized this album as a gem within his larger body of work. Unfortunately, upon hearing the cuts all the way through, I found it to be another classic crossover compromise. Loussier is neither a good jazz pianist nor a respectable classical pianist. Combining the genres does not make him any better.
Baroque Favourites is a fantastic CD!.......2003-07-17
Jacques Loussier has evolved only faintly in the more than 40 years he has Played Bach. This version displays a mellow style only vaguely aged. The trio's current bass player, Benoit Dunoyer De Segonzac, has a particularly tantalizing way of interpreting the Baroques. In this effort Loussier has successfully recreated the pop Pachelbel Cannon in D into another hit. I particularly like the Handel tracks at open, midway and close. (and would too purchase Loussier's Water Music & Royal Fireworks CD). And this would have to be the coolest version of Albinoni's also popular Adagio. As expected, Telarc's crew of sound engineers and hifi techno gurus have created a flawless recoding. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
Make It 4 1/2 Stars.......2002-08-24
Wally Shoup has pretty much nailed it in his review. I just want to add that it is remarkable how consistent Loussier has remained over a span of more than four decades.
Last night I played "Baroque Favorites" back-to-back with a reissue LP of his 1959 debut. I was struck by the similarity of sound and style between the two. I don't know if it's intentional, but with the latest bass player Loussier has nearly recreated the sound of the original trio. At the same time, the playing is more refined and subtle. "Play Bach" was very much a hit in 1959, but "Baroque Favorites" shows the concept is still fresh and that it is possible to grow without abandoning old ideas.
At first, like reviewer Dan Cohen, I thought that Loussier's treatment of other composers wasn't as strong as his Bach work. I've changed my mind, however. There's a smoother integration of Jazz and Baroque here than in "The Bach Book." The music has fewer non-Baroque parts grafted onto it, and the bass and drum solos are shorter and fit better. I also like the selection of pieces and their sequence, and I agree with Shoup about the Pachelbel Canon in D Major. I had hesitated to buy "Favorites" because of the inclusion of this Top 40 chestnut, but fortunately Loussier gives it a fresh spin.
Great jazz--great music.......2002-05-28
It had been a long time since I heard Jacques Loussier. Most of it devoted to the baroque music he so beautifully paraphrases in this album. Although his Bach is great, the disscovery of his Haendel is one of the great plusses of this opus. The French baroque musicians almost forgotten today, whose work I discovered recently, sound great when played as jazz.
A trully enjoyable musical experience to anyone who likes jazz and wants to hear more baroque music.
Not his best - but worthwhile.......2001-11-23
Loussier is at his best when he plays Bach. His rendition of Vivaldi's Four seasons is also excellent, and he is quite efficient in handling his Baroque favorites on this CD, but something is missing.
Loussier made his career on Bach because (and he said so himself) Bach makes the most Jazz-effective classical compositions. Perhaps these baroque compositions didn't go through Loussier's jazz-converter as well or as brilliantly as those others. Perhaps Loussier just coughed this CD without too much effort.
In any case - I bought it, and I am quite pleased I did (and this is the best bottom line possible...)

Another Naxos treasure trove of rare gems.......2001-04-18
If you're looking for a collection similar in feel to Naxos' 1995 excellent "Swedish Orchestral Favorites" (8.553115), you won't get that here. That first disc is also a pleasure but it features works for larger orchestral forces.
For this second volume the works are presented in more intimate settings - usually for string orchestra or for several solo instruments backed by a string section. The results are delightful performances of rarely heard "lighter" works.
Larsson's "Lyric Fantasy", which opens the disc, immediately calls to mind Grieg as does Larsson's delightful "Little Serenade for String Orchestra" which reminds me of Grieg's "Holberg Suite" for similar forces. On the other side of the spectrum the Larsson's "Adagio for String Orchestra" is very powerful: dark and brooding.
The works by Atterberg, Blomdhal, and Rangstrom are also very pleasant finds. The work really stands out for me however is Frumerie's "Pastoral Suite for flute, string orchestra, and harp". The flute, beautifully played by Sarah Lindloff, is the star here and it is given some truly beautiful material. Some of the harmonies are very modern and I can't help but wonder if the composer was influenced by Bartok's "Romanian Dances" - the influence is especially evident in the Gavott and Siciliano.
Naxos once again provides an opportunity to explore neglected treasures in outstanding performances and at a bargain price at that.
The cool air of the north..........2000-07-21
This veritable gem of a CD arrived last week and has not been off my turntable since. It reveals the depth of quality serious music that has come out of Sweden over the past 100 years, notwithstanding its neglect in the UK at least. When my mind has formerly thought of the music of Scandinavia, I have had comparitively little to think about outside of Grieg, Nielsen ands Sibelius. This CD and its sister Swedish Music volume 1 show how the Swedes have their own national heroes that use those two sources of inspiration with as much aplomb as our English composers over the same period: folksong and landscape. This CD is for much more delicate forces than its sister but that does not mean we are short changed in emotion or substantial developmental writing. The Lyric Fantasy of Larsson is a summer tone poem after the manner of Delius (but without the chromaticism of 'the curate proselytising')and is nevertheless totally original in its mood and flavours. Its water colored hues takes us through a landscape filled with good things, like a child's garden bathed in sunlight as in T S Eliot's 'Four Quartets': 'Burnt Norton' where Eliot depicts our early years with devastating effect yet without cloying nostalgia. The flute comes into its own in de Frumerie's 'Pastoral Suite' which may be thought of as a 'Pastoral Flute Concerto': again we are in those summer days of long ago but now we have a little pathos and nostalgia added to the phrasing and harmonies with looking back in regret and a sense of loss. The influence of Ravel can be seen here but again it is nothing more than a cross reference, for the work here is totally original in scope, the nordic warmth being pastel in its intensity under the golden sun. The finely divided strings of Blomdahl's 'Adagio' are hushed and sad in a truly heart felt piece that is comparable to Grieg's own, with oboe and woodwind intoning birdsong against the sadness contained in the strings. Kurt Attenberg's Suite No 3 is redolent of Moeran's smaller pieces, packed with imaginatinative writing and clean authentic phrasing. Larsson's 'Adagio for string orchestra is only 5 minutes long but has that deep breathed atmosphere of a Shostakovich symphony, say the Largos of his 5th and 10th symphonies, where the Russian master can summon up the depths of a November night in the north and lead to a mood of introversion and deep melancholia. Despite its short duration, this is the 'biggest' work for me on the disc. It is truly awesome! In similar vein, the Rangstrom 'Divertimento elegiaco' is longer but perhaps its 15 minute length means it dissipates its pathos over too long a period. Perhaps that is just me, perhaps other listeners will form another view. Nevertheless, Naxos show once again that bargain price can walk hand in hand with superlative novel pieces for most of us, splendidly played and excellently recorded.

A wonderful introduction to Swedish classical music.......2000-05-18
It is good to be introduced to hitherto unknown composers and their music when it is all on such a high level. Having missed the first collection, I am delighted to report that
on the friendly Naxos label (8.553715) is well worth the hearing. [The Amazon.com designation of Vol. V is incorrect.] As the liner notes put it, "Five composers who represent the rich tapestry of Swedish music composed in the twentieth century" are presented on this CD: Lars-Erik Larsson, Gunnar de Frumerie, Karl-Birger Blomdahl, Kurt Atterberg, and Ture Rangstrom.
This is my first experience with classical Swedish music and I am thoroughly impressed. The music is lyrical and passionate, now reminding one of the darker side of of the northern landscape as (say) in some Bergman films and now of the humor of "Smiles of a Summer Night" as these contrasting pieces are played by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and soloists under Petter Sundkvist. And I do plan to get my hands on Vol 1, as soon as I can.

Beautiful.......2003-10-24
I have had the cassette tape for years and have literally worn it out.. it squeaks almost all the way through. Need I say more? OK, I will.
Repetition will make you sick of anything, but this is one album I continue to reach for when I want to relax or just listen to beautiful music.
I will be ordering the CD within the next few days and am glad I found it here on CD... it won't be as hard to wear out and I am looking forward to hearing the enhanced sound of CD vs. tape.
Simply Amazing.......2002-10-09
This cd not only has the most beautiful rendition of Pachelbel's Canon that I have ever heard, but all the other tracks on this disc are top-notch as well. This cd is perfect to fall asleep to, and just generally relaxing. There are amazing instrumentalist that will take your breath away.

Classic Elegance.......2006-11-03
The listener cannot go wrong with this disc. The Canon in D, in particular, is the best arrangement yet.
Extremely Short But Good Sound Quality!.......2006-05-26
Although the arrangements are very different from the way these great compositions were originally written, this is still a very enjoyable listen and is a great sampler of the Baroque genre of Classical music for those new to the field. The movie "Ordinary People" introduced the masses to Leppard's version of "Canon" which has since become the most familiar and favorite one.
What's good about this collection is also that you get along with the usual pieces that you'd expect to find on any best of Baroque compilation such as Bach's "Air" and Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" gems such as my favourite piece here, Vivaldi's "Largo" the melody of which is brilliantly played on classical guitar and is probably one of the most emotionally beautiful pieces of classical music you'll ever hear.
Overall, the sound quality is very good too for an undigitally remastered cd and the reason is explained on the back of the cover which says the recordings have been digitally transferred from "newly remixed original session tapes" and seeing as how the oldest material here was recorded in 1975 by which time they had quite decent sound recording technology translates into great sound quality overall.
The problem with most "good" classical music by the giants such as Bernstein and Von Karajan is that they were recorded decades ago and many times before the 50s on terrible equipment and sometimes worse, in mono! and so you'll have to imagine how good they must have sounded live in the concert hall because they sound horrible on disc.
Final verdict: recommended for the surprisingly good sound quality for a classical disc and as a Baroque sampler (albeit quite short playing time) for those curious and new to the idiom.
Sweet music.......2005-07-29
In listening to many arrangements of Baroque music available in the market today, I have found none better than Great Performances: Baroque Favorites. I first purchased the cassette version almost twenty years ago, and I have worn out the poor thing. I purchased other arrangements of Pachebel's Cannon, and was not satisfied. I am pleased that the CD version of this performance is available and meets high quality audio standards.
A Great Album... despite being Leppard-ized.......2005-06-07
This CD album consists of... literally... Baroque favorites... including Pachelbel's timeless Canon, Albinoni's Adagio, and J. S. Bach's Air. Beginner or collector of Classical Music, it's worth part of one's personal music library. Since I'm so accustomed of listening to Baroque music on modern instead of period instruments, this is a perfect CD for me to own.
Although some of the pieces, especially Pachelbel's Canon, were arranged, they are nice arrangements. The more tedious version on the Canonwe're likely to listen has been fancified as if in a modern-day Re-mix. I love the arrangement; kinda gives me another perspective for the piece. The remaining unarranged pieces are performed very well with the orchestra.
Tough luck finding another album with more authentic versions if you're not fond of arranged versions.
Wonderful.......2004-05-11
I grew up not really appreciating classical music...and now in my early twenties I figured "hell, I should try out a new road". I found this cd...because I used to have a midi track of canon that came with my old computer and I remember listening to it in the 7th grade. I found the version on here to be more moving then any of the other adaptations on any other disc. I find this record to be like a neil young record. Very bare. I know some might say that these peices in their raw form were much more bare...considering they were written with less or any strings. Or some would think that it's crazy talk to compare neil young with anything "classical"...but I don't think so.
Buy this strictly for canon...the other peices are strong as well...but I think there's probably other composers that do the bach and vivaldi better. The handel is also most enjoyable.
BUY!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great Source for Piano Specialists.......2006-08-16
'The Schubert Transcriptions - II' composed by Franz Liszt is volume 32 in Hyperion's 'The Complete Music for Solo Piano' for Liszt. And, being a real sucker for 'complete' collections of anything, I scarfed this one up without a moment's reflection, especially since I'm something of a Schubert fan, even if I'm not the biggest Liszt fan on the planet.
Most of these pieces are arrangements of selected Schubert songs where the music for the voice and the piano accompaniment are combined into a solo piano piece. One problem with these pieces for the average (like me) amateur listener is that very few of the pieces are from Schubert's major or most familiar Lieder. In many ways, it feels we are simply listening to etudes, but without the delicacy of Chopin's piano studies.
Oddly, aside from the interest to the piano professional, I think there is a great use for this music as background music for serious gatherings where you want the music to be interesting, but not too intrusive.
This CD is excelent.......1998-09-12
Leslie Howard delivers a stuning performance on this cd. Not only is the musicianship flawless and creative; the inclusian of variant versions of the peices provide a glance into the stlyle of Lizst:variations of varations of transcriptions. The 45 minute Hungarian March is one of the most hauntingly beutiful peices purchasable, and the recording of the Sories de Venna are worth of a horowithz recording. BUY THIS CD!!
