4 out of 5 stars Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

5 out of 5 stars If you are a violin lover, buy it.......2003-01-19

It's beautiful. Simply put.

5 out of 5 stars This is "THE" Greatest Hits alum by Perlman.......2000-12-03

Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!

3 out of 5 stars This is a relaxing, however, somewhat disjointed collection........1998-11-12

This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening.......2007-05-15

Beautiful performance by Shaham (especially the two Kreisler pieces), perfectly backed by the Orpheus orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Gil Shaham Shines.......2003-11-01

Gil Shaham has been a regular guest artist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and, whether I've heard him in person or via the rebroadcast of the concert on National Public Radio station WBNI, it has always been a treat to hear him play. He is usually interviewed for the broadcasts, too, and he is as fascinating and enthusiastic a speaker as he is a player. He genuinely enjoys what he does and this comes across in his warm playing.

I am a big fan of Fritz Kreisler and have long enjoyed the short pieces that he wrote and performed, both in live performances and for Victor recordings. The first recording I ever heard of Kreisler was a 78-rpm album called "My Favorites," which featured a remarkable full color photograph of the musician (something rare in the 1940's). He included arrangements for solo violin and full orchestra of his most popular works, some of which are included in this recording. Kreisler's music is nostalgic and touching; he made no effort to go along with twentieth century musical trends and was still very successful as a composer and performer. It's great to hear his music again in these modern performances, expertly played by Gil Shaham and the Orpheus Orchestra.

I acquired this recording via a record club and have really enjoyed it. These are some of the lighter, shorter works by a variety of composers and they are all extremely enjoyable. The playing is exquisite throughout and conductor-less Orpheus Orchestra provides very fine accompaniment. (It always amazes me how well these musicians play without a conductor; they obviously are very gifted, skilled musicians and this is apparent in this recording.)

Shaham has also spoken enthusiastiacally about his recordings, which he immensely enjoys making since he can reach a wider audience than could ever hear him in concert or recital. This is definitely one of his best recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music; gorgeous playing........2000-09-20

No violinist I've ever heard has a tone as gorgeous as Gil Shaham. Shaham's gorgeous tone, as well as his artistic taste and easy-going temperament, make this excellent collection of violin romances a joy to listen to. This may or may not be great music, depending upon your taste, but it certainly is beautiful music, beautifully performed.

5 out of 5 stars Gil Shaham is my favourite violinist and I love his playing........1998-12-10

Gil has been my favourite young violinist for quite some time and I think he is just brilliant. This CD has some of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever written for the violin and he plays them all beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars Very beautiful, relaxing music........1998-09-18

I love the combination of these peices. They are all very expressive and eloquent on the part of the performer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very enjoyable.......2001-07-19

At first, I'd like to correct error. The pianist, Larisa Gergieva is NOT Varely Gergiev's WIFE! She is his sister. (Elder one, I think.)

About this disc, I enjoyed this recital. Gorchakova is one of my favorite soprano. Her voice is suited well to these Russian songs. It's interesting for me to her Russian songs. If you want to hear more Russian songs, try "Songs of Desire" by Olga Bolodina from Philips.

5 out of 5 stars The showcase for the Spinto soprano.......2000-04-25

Galina Gorchakova, Kirov's leading lady, is a true spinto soprano, not the more common forced lyric one. Her sound is unique and quite unusual, almost "mezzo-ish" at certain times, but with surprisingly easy resonant top. I could not help being reminded of another great Russian Galina - Vishnevskaya, the Bolshoi prima donna of 60s and 70s up to her departure from Communist regime with her husband Mstislav Rostropovich. Since then, there was an unsettling vacuum in the realm of sopranos capable of singing Russian and Italian repertoire. Luckily, Gorchakova seems ready and able to take on most of Vishnevskaya's signature roles, including Katerina of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk." Her clarity of diction and musical intelligence are a pleasure to hear particularly on the Programme presented here because the romances (a leader-like Russian art songs) are written to some of the most beautiful Russian poetic texts.

I feel it is important to note that neither the singing nor accompaniment here is flawed at all, as the reviewer below found. Furthermore, there is no tendency to "go flat". The only thing that came as a surprise to me was inclusion of several numbers written originally for a baritone or even a bass, such as "It Was in Early Spring" or "I Remember the Wonderful Moment." However, they were executed so brilliantly, it made me forget about the specifics and just enjoy Gorchakova's beautiful voice and expressiveness.

Most of you probably got a chance to see the MET's magnificent production of Tchaikovsky's "Pique Dame" with Gorchakova, Domingo, Borodina and Hvorostovsky in leading roles. Aside from Lisa, Gorchakova is also an incredible interpreter of highly demanding role of Elisabetta from Verdi's "Don Carlo" and Leonora from his "La Forza del Destino." I can't wait to hear her "Aida." Amazingly she does not struggle with dramatic Verdian repertoire, even though it lays relatively high for such a voice. And its power allows her to cut through heavy orchestration with ease, preserving flowing, and seemingly endless vocal line with no audible breathing. Philips generously provided us with several phenomenal Russian complete opera recordings featuring Gorchakova's talents: check out "Prince Igor," "The Maid of Pskov," "Iolanta," and "The Fiery Angel," the latter one being a rare jewel and destined to become one of the greatest recorded achievements of all time. Ms. Gorchakova is also a very good actress with a beautiful stage presence and somewhat reserved but passionate delivery. Hearing this CD is essential for Russian romance fans as well as for those who want to hear a true spinto soprano at its full glory, accompanied only by a subtle gentle piano of Larissa Gergieva. I was particularly impressed with a booklet that finally has Cyrillic texts instead of despicable way of spelling Russian words with English letters. There are also good English translations by Philip Taylor that stay true to the texts but also convey their romantic feel. If I could, I would have given this disc ten stars!

4 out of 5 stars Flawed but beautiful.......2000-03-16

This album of wonderful Russian romances and art songs is marred only slightly by Galina Gorchakova's tendency to go flat. Still, her unbelievably beautiful soprano voice and emotional connection with these pieces more than makes up for this. Gorchakova has never become quite as well known as her compatriots Olga Borodina and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and hasn't recorded as much as they have either. This is a shame; I would love to hear her in some of the Italian verismo repertoire. Her rich spinto sound would serve her well, and I believe that she is known for such interpretations as Butterfly, Liu, and Tosca. I would also like to her her Lisa on recording (from Pique Dame).

Anyway, this album is truly beautiful. Larissa Gergieva, the pianist, is the sister of Valery Gergiev, the director of the Kirov Opera in St. Petersburg. I think possibly some nepotism is happening here, as she is not an ideal accompanist. Still, she supports Gorchakova well, and doesn't detract from the beauty of these pieces.

Byron Janis was a pupil of Vladimir Horowitz, and one of the most exciting pianists of his generation. Like his colleague and contemporary, Van Cliburn, he burned out after a brief but brilliant career, much of which was, fortunately, documented in a stunning series of recordings produced by Mercury Living Presence. They are some of the greatest piano discs ever made, and they are all now available on CD. Mercury was the first American label to actually record in the Soviet Union, and these performances of the Liszt piano concertos are one of the few serious rivals to Sviatoslav Richter's famous Philips versions. If you love this music, you'll want both. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dazzling & Mature Performance!!.......2007-03-12

The dazzling 1962 Moscow Live perffromance of the two Liszt Concertos by Byron Janis, recorded at the hight of his career, is probably the most technically and artistically accomplished among all of his commercial recordings with RCA & Philips. Not a stir from the crowd, you can tell the hushed silence of awe-struck audience.

Both concertos display his maturity as an artist, super-fine tonal delicacy and titanic virtuosity coupled with depth of sound, and may well match Richter's 50 & 60s live performances.

Kondrashin and Rhozdestwensky gives equally outstanding contribution with the orchestras. The stereo sound is vividly alive and warm, with wide dynamic range. Must for anyone who seek serious pianism in highest order.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2000-12-29

Byron Janis's approach to the First and Second Concertos are excellent. His interpretation was unlike any other recording or artist I had ever heard. The third movement of the First Concerto was especially exhillarating. When I heard it, I got an adrenaline rush. His touch is amazing; he can make the instrument sing, thunder, crash, or bounce lightly. His mastery is an excellent model for any serious piano student. If you are thinking of buying this CD, I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST INTERPRETATION.......1999-01-14

This piece has never had such a bold, broad, and powerful, yet amazingly sensitive performance. It overwhelmed me the first time I heard it, with it's opening chords. One feels a great amount of power and confidence(though that may not have been how Mr. Janis felt during the performance.) Soon with the sensitive scales perfected with elegance, the listners is amazed at such control of the pianist. Throughout the performance, Mr. Janis embraces the audience with magical sounds, leading us all in a whole new adventure.

5 out of 5 stars It Would Be Worth Every Cent Just for the Brahms Sonatas.......2006-12-19

This is probably my favorite boxed set of anything, ever. Each disc has its own merits but the Brahms and Franck are passionate and sublime, the Bartok is everything you want your Bartok to be, and of course the Tchaikovsky is without comparison. Long live King David!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Oistrakh.......2002-01-10

A mandatory purchase (at a bargain price!) for all violin lovers- it contains some of Oistrakh's greatest recorded performances, including mind-boggling performances of the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms and and Dvorak concerti as well as the famous sonata recordings with Richter. Please, BMG, could we have more such treasures from Melodiya's legendary vaults?

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2000-07-31

Perhaps the great accomplishment in playing an instrument is to play it naturally, as if it were like breathing. Few artists prove this point as well as Oistrakh, the Soviet Union's artist, a true symbol of the Russian's school of music's excellence. As some other reviewer said, this is a moment of true musical orgasm. As an aspiring violinist, hearing Oistrakh's effortless rendition of the Tchaikovsky brings one almost to tears before such greatness. Some may complain about his dated method, but I favor it above any other artist, and highly recommend his interpretation of both the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky. Considering the fact that people didn't walk out of his performance of the pieces while a bombing raid was going on (during WWII), the man's musical prowess is second to none. Of special attention is the Brahms Sonata in A Major with Richter, easily one of the purest performances of the piece.

5 out of 5 stars A wondeful collection.......2000-07-01

David Oistrakh has arguably the best pure tone of all who have ever played the violin--bar none.

5 out of 5 stars Oistrakh (and Richter) Triumphant!.......2000-02-07

Reviewer David Mednicoff is exactly right about this set. All the concerto performances are terrific, but the two discs of sonatas (Brahms #2 & 3; Frank; Shostakovich [the live world premiere] and Bartok) with Richter are really something else. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars "Superb Recital exploring a wide repertoire".......2000-02-04

Enthusiasts of Russian Song may be interested to note the comments of British reviewers. Classic CD called it a "Superb recital" and commented on Savenko: "He has a genuine bass-baritone voice slightly lighter, more lyrical and wide-ranging than the typically cavernous Russian bass, but with a particularly thrilling quality" Classic FM Magazine placed it within their recommended recordings section and called it "A debut recital of great quality", and Gramophone pointed out "To listen to this carefully chosen recital is to be reminded how consistent the tradition of the lyrical song, or romans, is in Russia" Savenko responds "eloquently and vigorously, and without caricature to such as that old Chaliapin stalwart, Mussorgsky's 'Song of the Flea'. BBC Music Magazine chose to highlight that a decade ago, the songs of the composers chosen here were little-known outside Russia, "but the past few years had seen an abundance of recordings. With so much competition, the quality of the performance and programme is critical, but happily both these discs come up trumps" The other disc referred to is Savenko's recording on another label entitled Russian Vocal Masterpieces Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov Songs.

4 out of 5 stars Savenko presents a fine selection of Russian art songs........1999-07-23

Vassily Savenko is not as well known in the U.S. as his colleague Dimitri Hvorostovsky, but both of them are worthy successors to a long line of Russian bassos going back to Feodor Chaliapin. On this CD, "Russian Images", Savenko is accompanied by the young pianist and composer, Alexander Blok. As Russian art songs share many of the charms of German lieder, including their reliance on the piano's role in the overall schema, Blok's contribution is vital. The disc contains works by a galaxy of Russian composers, including Borodin, Glinka, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Rimsky- Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky, many of them in settings of poems by Alexander Pushkin. Although some knowledge of Russian is helpful in gaining a full appreciation of these vocal gems, the disc is accompanied by a free, but serviceable, English translation.

5 out of 5 stars The Cello Sings in Place of the Human Voice.......2006-07-04

Cellist Mischa Maisky and his pianist collaborator Pavel Gililov continue their exploration of the cello as vocalist with these stunningly cello/piano transcriptions of Russian works for voice and piano. Maisky's tone and technique are often described as 'singing' in nature so in these transcriptions he is indeed in his element.

Included in this live recital recording are 'The Lark' (from Glinka's 'A Farewell to St. Petersburg'), 'How sweet it is to be with you', 'Do not tempt me needlessly', 'I recall that wonderful moment', by Mikail Glinka; 'Cradle song', 'None but the lonely heart', 'Frenzied nights', 'Night', 'It was in early spring (At the ball)' by Tchaikovsky; 'I Am Sad' by Alexander Sergeyevich Dargomizhsky; 'A Tear' by Moussorgsky; 'Romance for piano in E flat major' by Anton Rubinstein; 'Elegy: The Clouds Begin to Scatter', 'The Nymph', 'Eastern Song' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; 'Six Romances' by Anton Stepanovich Arensky; 'The burnt letter' by César Cui; 'A Wish' by Alexander Glazunov; 'Do not Sing, My Beauty', 'How fair this spot', and 'Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninov; and some anonymous composer's works.

The captured sound of the recital is phenomenally fine and the applause seems as warm as the music. This is an album of beautiful songs as sung by the cello in the passionate hands of Mischa Maisky, partnered by Pavel Gililov. It is a winsome, nostalgic collection. Grady Harp, July 06

5 out of 5 stars I've known him and his life and also mine that love Russian music so much........2005-09-12

I am a mezzo-soprano singer and love Italian opera and German Lieder. But I haven't known how beautiful Russian Romances are. Maybe because many male low voice singers have just good voices but beautiful legato phrasing with the hottest heart as Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings on this CD.
His amazing earthquaking low tone and heavenly elegant high tone are based on his deep breathing of his own. His sweet but excellent expressions moved me and my life. I recognized these Romances are his foundation of whole his musical life. I felt his deep love to Russia and his family, and it impressed me as a Lieder singer.
It is a huge contribution to many foreigners including me got to love Russian music who haven't liked them before.

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Treasure.......2004-08-05

Even major fans of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff may be unfamiliar with these works, but I think this CD perfectly captures what these artists sought to convey musically. The songs are mostly "torch songs" with text by major Russian poets. The piano and voice work together very well to build to "the point" of every work. The deep male voice we hear is just right for the material. After reading the text along with the music a few times, the listener can most fully appreciate this artwork, even if one may not philosophically enjoy the explicit message of the words, the music clearly delivers an artistic expression of intense longing.

      5 out of 5 stars magnificent !.......2000-06-19

This recording was my introduction to the glorious voice of this Siberian baritone, and it continues to overwhelm me with its passion and soul. These are mostly songs of love unrequited and love departed, sung with emotion and sensitivity by one of the most extraordinary singers of our generation. The simplicity and beauty of the solo piano accompaniment by Oleg Boshniakovich only adds to the power of this CD. It's a must for anyone who loves Russian music and appreciates Hvorostovsky's amazing talent.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Dmitri CD.......1999-08-25

The repertoire for Dmitri's second solo album was chosen with great care. The title "romances" can be somewhat misleading, though. This is not a collection of "touchy-feely" love songs. The lieder-style songs by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov deal with anguish, suffering, reflective melancholy and the kind of love that leaves a heart scarred and bleeding forever. One exception - the bravura of Don Juan, sung with gusto and thirst for life. These songs are dear to every educated Russian. Much like Schubert, who composed the lieder to the poetry of Goethe and Shakespeare, the Russian composers selected works by Pushkin, Pleschcheyev, Fyet, and others to communicate the intense emotions or dreamy reflections. The incredible "Christ is Risen", is written by D. Myeryezhkovsky, a man far ahead of his time, lamenting the irony of hearing the happy church hymns and praises set against the background of our brutal age. Everyone who has ever experienced utter loneliness, despair, melancholy mixed with expectations of a way out will be touched by these songs, that cross the language barriers and speak to the heart with the help of today's greatest baritone. You don't have to be a native speaker like me to appreciate them. Dmitri's voice never fails to explore the very core of the human soul. It can expand thunderously or soften to the sensuous pppp with perfect control and clarity. The high notes are triumphant and soaring with none of the coarseness that so many baritones have. The lower notes impress with their basso-like quality. His passion and intelligence are reminiscent of such great singers as Boris Christoff and Nicolai Ghiaurov, yet the range of the baritone allows for new, unusual, and welcome interpretations. He receives warm, thoughtful, and lively support from pianist Oleg Boshniakovich. Philips provides great sound and a nice booklet amiss any Cyrillic texts (which is thankfully corrected in their latest releases) and, alas, with a few minor spelling mistakes. The cover features, quite appropriately, Dmitri singing, looking out into the morning mist. Great artist and great achievement!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and should be on the Essential List!.......1998-09-11

This is a wonderful collection of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff songs and is one of my favorites. Dmitri does the full-out dramatic songs as well as the folk-song-style songs (like "She is as fair as day"). All are well suited to his (bass/baritone) voice and artistry.

If you like this album, also try his CD "My Restless Soul", another good one.
