There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite.It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.

So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.

Not happy with delivery (or non delivery) of this item.......2007-01-16

When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.

I've played the vinyl version of the Student Prince with Mario Lanza enough times over the last 35 years to know the words well enough to sing them in the shower (badly to be sure). Bought this
CD for a clean copy. Bad move. I dont even know who is singing "Summertime in Heidelberg", it cant be Mr Lanza. If you have or can borrow the record, copy it instead.

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

This CD of mario is absolutely fabulous. It is the only recording I have managed to find of him singing Nessum Dorma. It is not to be missed. One of operas greatest.

I am sick and tired of all these technical reviews and critical remarks leveled against everything Mario Lanza did in his short life!

True, musically Mario made some mistakes....but so has every other great tenor in history....from Caruso to Pavarotti and beyond!
And perhaps he sang some arias with too much fortissimo....so what?
Every single song on here, be it among his best or worst work, is a masterpiece when compared to renditions of the same arias by other, more legit and operatically acclaimed tenors.

In order to "get" Lanza one must discard all notions of "finesse", "grace" and " elegance" for Lanza operated, and sang on raw, unadulterated, gut wrenching emotion.
THAT was the genious of Mario Lanza.

We can argue for another 40 years as to his operatic legitimacy...for nought!
Lanza was a VOCAL master and his approach to song was as unconventional and idiosyncratic as was his life.
That's what makes these songs so special and unique.

No one other than perhaps Corelli had the voice and the balls to sing with such uninhibited emotion and that's what this CD is all about.
It is a testament of a great voice.
The fact that Lanza did not have the benefit of a great conductor or teacher guiding him through most of his career, makes these recordings all the more great.

He sang the music as he felt it and that's a big no-no in the stuffy, overbearing and self-righteous world of opera.
Lanza earned millions of dollars because his voice touched all who heard it. His art brought more people to opera than all the leading tenors of his day combined....and this during the golden age of tenors and opera as a whole!

The only word of lesser praise I can offer is the inclusion of the duets. Mario did not have the temprament for duet singing, and subsequently he ended up drowning his partners out, or engaging in a sort of vocal warfare which was the case with much of what he and Grayson recorded during his MGM days.
The arias are great....the duets are medicore on all accounts.

In closing, I apologize for not having spen time on the actual songs. It's been done to death.
All I can say is that, if you wish to hear opera arias sung in a way such as will never be heard again in our lifetime, then this is a CD for you.
If you want proper, technically proficient opera, sung by some big name opera jerk, then stick to that....you'll only end up feeling like all the other good people who have so much negative to say about this CD.

BMG Needs to hire Folks in the Know.......2004-06-15

There are several cuts on this CD that Lnaza did in fact record much better at other times. I have all his records LPs, 78s and movies and I wish BMG would consult a Lanza fan,or me,for the cuts would make the perfect CD. I think its great that we have such a wonderful collection of recordings of Lanza and this one warts and all is still one of the best. The best Lanza set was the RCA LP 2 record set put out in the 70s with Lanza on the cover in M. Butterfly. Where oh where can it be??? Long live Mario Lanza!

Mario Lanza WAS a trained opera singer.......2003-11-13

To the reviewer from Michigan who said Mario never performed an opera on stage, you are wrong. He did two performances as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly before going off to Hollywood.

Mario had extensive operatic training from some top teachers. He was sought after by many opera companies, including the Met in New York.

It is true that some of Mario's recordings are not as good as others. He did various versions of much of his material, both live and studio, so of course you will find some you prefer to others. But the beauty, power and expressiveness of his voice is unmatched by any tenor I have ever heard.

As said, enjoyable from start to finish, room for more?.......2007-02-04

A well done collection; Elvis Pressley has a stirring rendition and perhaps there are copyright reasons as to why this is not on this album; and the Glenn Miller bigband version would have fit in well too. The Roger Whittaker track is moving and has a nice contemporary sound; but I still find fault with his ommission of some of the lyrics, poetic license should only go so far. Still, you will not be disappointed; I was in fact, captivated for the first few hours of listening to this CD, glad I got it on a Saturday. I am already, to the dismay of my old college roommates, one of those sorts who might listen to the same song 5 times in a row off an album. This is certainly solved here. My favorite versions must be the Mario Lanza and Kate Smith tracks; however, my choices may well change because each version certainly has it's merits. Oh, and lastly, some of you may need a box of kleenex to go along with this set.

The concept of a single CD or multi-track recording focusing on a single melody has always seemed out of reach -- at least in a manner that would hold me in rapture from beginning to end. This CD did the job! In spades! Who could imagine the likes of Al Hirt, James Galway, Peter Nero, Richard Stoltzman (amazing! How does he do it?), Mario Lanza, Roger Whittaker and on and on . . . all in a dreamlike collection of wonderful renditions of a familiar melody that transported me back to my childhood (and that's over several decades to before World War II)? It's a good thing that CDs don't wear out! I put the Stoltzman (clarinet) solo on "repeat" while sleeping the other night and wow! My dreams were like none I can ever remember. Anyone who enjoys the "Danny Boy" melody should absolutely hear this marvelously well-balanced collection of . . . well, what else? . . . "Danny Boy" !!!

This CD is enchanting from the very start. The variety of renditions keeps the listener tuned in. While it would be hard to imagine anyone purchasing this CD that didn't like the title song, the music is wonderful, especially when shuffled with other similar music on a multiplay CD player.

Major improvement over the 1995 cd release. A must-have for every Lanza fan!.......2006-03-08

The difference in sound quality between this and the 1995 cd (which sounded good before I got this one) is astounding. I have only listened to the cd layer of the new hybrid SACD. Both the low and high frequencies have improved, as is the reproduction of Lanza's voice. This one sounds rich and full, the former cd weak and fragile compared to it. Also the hiss that was apparent in the 1995 cd is gone. You will not need a high end hi-fi system to hear the difference.

This is also Lanza's best album ever, I think. Every Lanza fan should get this cd. It is well worth the price, even if you own the older cd. Many thanks to BMG for this amazing release!

The best reproduction of Lanza's finest album........2006-02-24

This "hybrid" Super Audio CD (SACD) can be played on both conventional CD players and SACD systems. I've only heard it on the former, and was simply blown away by the beautiful reproduction of Lanza's singing on the 12 tracks that constitute the tenor's 1958 "Mario!" album of Neapolitan songs. For once, the balance between singer and orchestra is perfect, and with the exception of one track (the slightly muted Comme Facette Mammeta), I have never heard this album in better sound. Unlike the 1995 conventional CD version of this release, Lanza is no longer overly forward at the expense of Franco Ferrara's superbly conducted orchestra, and the sandy quality that marred many of the tracks on that earlier disc has all but disappeared. The sound is simultaneously richer and brighter.

As with the 1995 CD, the great Mario! album is coupled here with The Vagabond King, recorded in July, 1959 - seven months after the earlier album. Although not in the same class as the Mario! album - either vocally or soundwise - this is also the best I've ever heard this recording. The highlights (Drinking Song, Love Me Tonight, Nocturne, etc) belie Lanza's failing health, and offer overwhelming proof that just three months before his death, the old romantic magic was still intact. This CD also includes a previously unreleased reprise of the lovely Nocturne.

All in all, then, this is a magnificent release, and one that whets the appetite for further SACD Lanza couplings. Top on the list of deserving recordings would be a "twofer" of the 1958 For the First Time soundtrack coupled with the 1959 Mario Lanza Sings Caruso Favorites, both of which are Living Stereo releases sorely in need of decent sound reproduction. How about it, BMG/Sony?

Play it again, Sam ..........2004-02-24

Moved by the enthusiastic review of Sam, I bought a copy of this CD. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, am very grateful for Sam's review, and am cheerfully one of the diehard fans. No doubt it would be nice if we all could agree on what is great, what is good and what is not. Clearly, that's not possible. Each of us will bring to a listening experience individual expectations, based upon individual taste and the extent of his or her hearing acuteness, and the developed critical faculty which embraces both of those factors.

There are it seems to me three ways of listening to any singer (or to any music or to any discussion, for that matter): with the mind, or with an emotional response, or with some kind of balance between those first two ways. Because Lanza sang from the heart (and I do not in so saying mean that he was not an intelligent artist), that's how I listen to him, so ... I'm going to be a happy and hearty listener and I will
play it again, and again, and again, Sam.

Great New Old Lanza CD.......2004-01-15

Judging from what I have read on this forum and others, all of us
have "rediscovered" great recordings lying around in our collections
that for one reason or another have been ignored for long periods of
time. Well, since I had "played to death" both the Mario! album and
MGM Performances album, I needed to search deeper. I found a CD that
I have played only twice...but one that contains many rewards and I
will now play this one until it hurts (my wife's ears that is!).

Drum roll...the album is "You'll Never Walk Alone", now TEN years
old. It includes "songs of faith and inspiration", highlighted in a
brief review by Derek Mannering. There are eight songs from the Coke
Show which had not been released before this and many of the rest
are from the fine old RCA album "I'll Walk With God" with one or two
others from LP sources thrown in. All are remastered and have
excellent, crisp sound..which in my car sounded as good as I have
heard.

My thoughts on this program:
1-I'll Walk With God: There is a good reason why this recording
starts every Lanza Ball. It is beautifully done and quite moving. I
think enough has been said about it already, so I will go on.
2-The Trembling of a Leaf: I have never heard this done by anyone
else. A delicate song sung with a wide range of emotion and dynamics.
Deserves wider exposure.
3-The Lord's Prayer: This particular recording is probably the
finest version done by Mario. It is also one of the all time great
recordings of this number. Have been enjoying this since the 78 era!
4-Love in a Home: Even though this comes from a popular show (Li'l
Abner), it is seldom performed. It features a delightful melody and
Mario breezes along with the vocal line.
5-Somebody Bigger Than You and I: A song that could easily be sung
in church. It is devotional and inspiring. Needs to be played more
often to remind us of our place in this universe.
6-Through the Years: Again, I can't remember anyone else recording
this. Fred? Regardless of that, it is a rewarding song.
7-Ave Maria: Bach-Gounod version. Always a delight. And I enjoy the
Schubert version as well. Mario has always done justice to both.
8-Without a Song: One of my favorites, one I have in my current
repertoire, and a recording I have always admired since I first
heard it on one of the old RCA LP's (I forget which one!)
9-The Hills of Home: Talk about an obscure (and possibly dated) song!
Probably no one else but Mario could have pulled this one off.
Unusual melodic line with very poetic words to match.
10-I Love Thee: ( Ich liebe dich...watch how you say that!!). I
prefer the For the First Time version, but this is still fine. Does
he flub a part of one word in this?
11-The Rosary: I first heard this melody on a player piano I would
pump in the sixties. Much more meaningful when words are added by
our favorite tenor. A fine recording.
12-Look for the Silver Lining: Tuneful and gay (if I can use that
word in its original meaning). Play this when you want to feel happy.
13-None But the Lonely Heart: A brilliant recording of a great song,
albeit another rather ignored piece. "My senses fail...a burning
fire devours me...none but the lonely heart can know my sadness".
Play this when you feel blue.
14-My Buddy: I am not so macho that I cannot admit I once sent this
recording to one of my closest male friends who was stationed in the
Army in Germany. Not surprised it is seldom sung these days, but
Mario can still move me with it. Anna felt it was sung too "big". I
disagree.
15-Guardian Angels: I love this song, but I prefer the commercial
recording of it somewhat more. Nice to know Mario enjoyed singing
this to his kids.
16-Somewhere a Voice is Calling: This has a Victor Herbert quality
to it. One you probably either love or hate.
17-Trees: I would play this for anyone I would want to hear Mario's
voice for the first time. Popular songs don't get much better
treatment than this recording. We are privileged to have it.
18-Ave Maria (Schubert): See the above Ave comments.
19-Because: I wish Mario could have sung this at our wedding!
Instead, I sung to Anna the beautiful melody of Chaplin's "Smile"
with words I wrote especially for her. It is called "Come Share My
Dream". I always like to hear this paired with "For You Alone".
20-Roses of Picardy: An oldie, but still a goodie. His perfect
diction carries the message of the lyrics.
21-For You Alone: Surely Mario used to play Caruso's version of
this, which is also well sung (even though the English is not so
good). He equals the great Caruso in passion and delivery.
22-You'll Never Walk Alone: Too short for my money and, in my honest
opinion, a quickly made recording that needed more work. Hardly
matters with all the greatness that proceeded it in this fine album.
If you haven't played it in awhile, pull it out and enjoy!

THIS IS WONDERFUL CD AS HIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE SINGS "AVE MARIA" AND OTHER SONGS OF HOPE AND LOVE. HE TRULY HAS A GLORIOUS VOICE! A MUST BUY FOR MARIO LANZA FANS! I RATED IT 4 STARS
