5 out of 5 stars cherry picking.......2007-02-15

Pity Alfred Brendel, Neville Marriner, and the incomparable Academy of St Martin in the Fields having to play this luscious span of concertos from the sweet spot of Mozart's oeuvre.

If there is sweeter music in the universe, it must lie at the depths of the sea or some equally inaccessible place, far from eyes and ears that could compare it to Mozart's piano concertos no. 19-24.

Mozart's piano concerti, perhaps more than those of any other composer, shape the solo instrument's phrasing so that its entrances and exits vis-à-vis the orchestral score are nearly seamless. Brendel and his supporting cast perform this aspect of the music as well as can be done.

In the stellar Philips Classics 'Duo' series, this recording may well reign supreme. It's as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars Brendel and Marriner play Mozart at a bargain price.......2006-08-18

Philip's two double-CD sets of Alfred Brendel and Neville Marriner performing a total of ten of Mozart's great piano concertos, plus two rondos for piano and orchestra, must rate as one of the best of many bargains available in their "2 for 1" series. The four CDs add up to close to five hours of music, most of it essential listening for anyone interested in Mozart, great piano music, and great concertos.

This first of the two sets contains four indisputable masterpieces. In the stormy D minor Concerto K. 466, Brendel springs a mild surprise by playing his own cadenzas rather than Beethoven's, the ones most often used. I must confess to preferring Beethoven's unstylish but dramatic and imaginative cadenza to the first movement, but otherwise the performance is beyond reproach. Brendel adds some discreet and entirely appropriate ornamentation to the many repetitions of the second movement's main theme. The Olympian C major K. 467, with its incomparably beautiful slow movement, also receives some much-needed decoration: here the cadenzas are by Radu Lupu and are a bit quirkier than necessary. Although the soloist's tone and phrasing in the wistful K. 488 are ravishing in the first two movements, the starker phrases of the F-sharp minor Adagio are better left undecorated--for once Brendel's practically unerring sense of propriety in added ornamentation goes slightly off. In my opinion the best of a superb set of performances is that of the C minor, K. 491: Brendel and Marriner catch every nuance of tragedy while never slighting the grace of the music--the problem of writing an appropriate first-movement cadenza, difficult since Mozart left none of his own, is brilliantly solved here by the soloist.

Although in a set billed as Mozart's "Great Piano Concertos" I might have opted, narrowly, for including K. 453 in G major over K. 459, it cannot be denied that all involved seem perfectly attuned to the quicksilver energy and unexpected contrapuntal intricacies of the F major work. The two additional rondo movements, one a lightweight replacement for the original finale of Mozart's very first original piano concerto, the other a possible alternate finale to his earlier A major Concerto K. 414, are a delightful bonus. Incidentally, although the splitting of K. 488 across two generously filled CDs is an annoyance, timing restrictions would not have permitted cramming three complete concertos onto one CD as another review suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart's great piano concertos, Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2006-07-10

We love Mozart. Especially his piano concertos. We purchased these volumes, because we wore out our cassette tapes.
Mozart piano concertos performed by Arthur Brendel and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, It does not get much better than that. 5 hours of music as a very reasonable price!

I even ordered a second set to give to a friend.

5 out of 5 stars great pianist, great price, bad track listing.......2006-02-16

Alfred Brendel is one of the world's most famous pianists, but not for reasons that make Argerich, Paderewski, or Rubinstein famous. Brendel is an expert both artistically and technically but he is not given to highly individualistic interpretations that rattle purists and create controversy. In other words, Brendel is a highly reliable pianist. Like Murray Perahia, there are no let downs in his recorded performances. For this and the price, no one should pass up this 2 disc recording.

The only downside is the recording's track listing. Piano Concerto No. 23 is split: its first movement is in the first disc while its last two movements are in the second. Bewildering especially since the piano concertos are not sequenced chronologically. And the insert doesn't help. It does not explain the track arrangement (is it by the year of recording? by importance in Mozart's ouvre?). Nonetheless, there it is, Piano Concerto No. 23 separated into two cds. Why this has to be is difficult to understand. The first movement, allegro, is 11.04 minutes long; in the second disc, a one movement rondo, Rondo in A, KV 386, is 8.32 minutes long. Why wasn't this rondo placed in the first disc to allow a seamless playing of Piano Concerto No. 23?

This is annoying if your player does not support multiple disc playing. I bought this 2 cd set specifically for Piano Concerto No. 23, whose second movement I love. It is one of the most sublime of piano adagios, up there with the second movements of Chopin no. 1, Rachmaninoff no. 2, Shostakovich no. 2. And I bought it specifically for Brendel's performance with the ASMITF, conducted by Neville Marriner. Brendel really makes the piano weep here. His evocations of a human's cycle of grief and redemption make the performance definitive for Piano Concerto No. 23. If the split won't bother you, do yourself a favor and get a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Performances @ Bargain Price.......2004-07-28

I have been buying the Naxos Mozart Piano Concertos with pianist Jeno Jando (accompanied by the Concentus Hungaricus conducted by Matyas Antal) as individual discs for some time now, and I must admit that they have all been superb in both sound and performances. I happen to own many fine performances of the Mozart Piano Concerti, but the Naxos/Jando is the one I keep returning to over and over again. If I had to live with only one set of Mozart's Piano concertos (dread the thought) it would surely be the Naxos. Grab them all and endulge in great music performed with virtuosity by both the soloist and orchestra, beautifully recorded, and at a price that won't break your wallet.

5 out of 5 stars Naxos, like Mozart, is a rare, magical find!!.......2003-01-28

This set is undoubtedly one of the best values I've ever seen!!! On 5 discs, we get Mozarts late piano concertos (volume #2 contains the early works). Jeno Jando and the Concentus Hungaricus sound great in their performance (1989-1990 recordings) of these masterpieces.

Like the other reviewer, I agree that this is definitely a classical interpretation and I will go so far as to suggest that those who like a deep, romantic feel probably will find this lighter interpretation lacking. The piano is sharp, defined and aggressive in the 'regal' sense. Tempo changes are kept to a minimum and the orchestra is always crisp and defined.

What I noticed immediately about these recordings is the unbelievable compliment of the Jando/Concentus combination, not only in style, but in volume. These discs are extremely well-balanced both in sound and mood. As a consequence, most music reviews that I consulted in my decision to get this set, rated it very high and as a 'best buy' of sorts. After listening to this set many times, they obviously knew what they were talking about. In terms of price, preformance and beauty, this value is not to be missed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Set!.......2002-07-24

See my review under Volume 2 of this set. I cannot speak highly enough about the music, as well as the performances.

If I had to choose a single record to come with me to a lone island, I would take Mozart's Piano Concert nº 20 - K 466 -, superbly and magistrally played by Howard Shelley and The London Mozart Players. The concert himself, in my opinion, is one of the musical pieces where it is possible to fell better all the musical genius of Mozart. I deeply recommend it to everybody, because it is impossible to demand better to a composer or to a player.

4 out of 5 stars Promise of good things to come.......2004-12-25

Recorded in May 1989, this first volume of Jenö Jandó’s set of complete Mozart Piano Concertos, though by no means perfect, contains promise of the good things to come in this series. Jenö Jandó himself is an able pianist who takes meticulous care over his performances, and listening to him here is, as usual, a first-rate pleasure; I felt that he particularly came into his own with the bouncy, ebullient Concerto No. 13, which seems to reflect the energetic, cheeky personality of young Mozart. Concerto No. 20, the first of Mozart’s concertos in a minor key, is much more serious; musically, it points forward to a later period, and there is no apparent break in style when Jandó plays Beethoven’s cadenzas (although I am sure Jandó would have been perfectly able to improvise his own, as more historically-minded interpreters have done). Naxos chose a smallish chamber orchestra for this series: the liner notes inform me that the Concentus Hungaricus has 16 members, but whether this number was exceeded on this recording is unfortunately not given away; perhaps it is one of Naxos’ idiosyncracies that they never tell you the exact distribution nor anything about the instruments played. However, the sound of the orchestra is good, definitely a class above some of the Slovakian ensembles that Naxos used to employ so much. Conductor András Ligeti is able to inspire a performance which, while not breathtaking, conveys a sense of Mozart’s genius and remains entertaining throughout.

The sound engineering is satisfactory without being brilliant, sometimes I had the impression that the balance between orchestra and soloist was not quite right, with the soloist seeming to take up the whole front of the stage and almost super-imposing his enormous piano on the ensemble, which seems to take a step backwards every time Jandó touches the piano. Nonetheless, this is a good performance and deserves four stars.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply Great.......2004-06-11

This Naxos coupling of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 13 and 20 is a a real sleeper. I own several fine recordings of both concertos and have found this CD fast becoming my personal favorite. Pianist Jeno Jando may not be a household name, but he is outstanding. He plays with a lot of emotion and does the greatest service to Mozart's music. The Concentus Hungarius supply him lovely support. Besides the wonderful performance and sound, this Naxos CD is a steal at such a bargain price.

What further makes this CD so fine is the contrast offered in both concertos. Here, in No.13, you have one of Mozart's finest earlier concertos coupled with one of his finest later concertos in No.20, only one of two that Mozart wrote in a minor key. Jando also plays the cadenzas that Beethoven (a champion of this concerto) wrote for the first and last movements. Finally, for those people who saw the movie "Amadeus", the Concerto No.20's gorgeous Romance movement was used as the final credits were rolled. Prior to writing this review I just ordered the Naxos Mozart/Jando recording of concertos No. 23 & No. 24, both masterpieces. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible for the Money.......2000-07-06

Perhaps Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 is not his best. Certainly Nos. 21 and 23 are more famous. However, in his Concerto No. 20 you see one of the only piano concertos he wrote in a minor key (24 being the other), and it shows a side of Mozart rarely seen. In fact, very few of his many compositions were written in a minor key, a fact that gives this concerto significance aside from its beauty.

Granted, the solo pianist playing the 20th needs to have a forceful personality. Jando plays energetically, but there are other recordings where this comes through even clearer. I'm not entirely sure that the tuning of the piano hurts the performance, however; the 20th is more emotional than just about any Mozart composition, and serves as a prelude to the Romantic period. In this sense, I believe that the richness of the piano is justified, although it is certainly an uncommon interpretation of a piece written firmly during the Classical period.

The Piano Concerto No. 13 is gorgeous as well, and perhaps suits Jando better. For anyone who wants a complete Mozart collection, this piece is well worth getting; however, it lacks the brilliant complexities or memorable melodies that his more famous later concertos contain. Even in the liner notes this concerto is given barely half the attention given to the 20th. As a side note, the liner notes are fairly good, and give a good discussion of what happens musically in both concertos.
Well worth the money. Worth more, in fact; buy it for Concerto No. 20 alone. You won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars Not only not the best, not even close........2000-04-05

I disagree with 'Bob' (below). First, the 20th Piano Contero is not Mozart's best; surely either 23d or 24th is. Second, I believe that in the first movement of the 20th, the soloist has to have the mentality of a tank-gunner. *He* is the man calling the shots, literally shooting through the orchestra. Although Jando has a good amount of energy, he doesn't sound as if in command, but as if he likes the idea of being in command. Another problem is that his piano is tuned to a rich Romantic tone which is not conducive to Mozart, and which contributes his lack of command. He's supposed to be a gunner, why doesn't he have the right gun? His Romantic piano hurts this and other recordings of pre-Romantic music e.g. his Bach.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Versions of Mozart's Piano Concertos Available.......2000-01-19

I highly recommend all of the discs that make up Naxos' "Complete Piano Concertos" series. Beautifully recorded, thoughtfully played, exceptional price. This particular disc contains Mozart's greatest effort in the realm of the piano concerto, No. 20. You'll be glad you made this purchase.

Those who expect mannered, Romantic interpretations will be surprised by Fischer's aristocratic classicism. His supposed technical failings are nowhere in evidence in these 1933-1936 recordings. What is abundantly in evidence is a lovely, varied tone, a rather severe classic style in No. 20, a more elastic approach in the looser No. 22, unerringly right tempos (except for a brisk andante in No. 22), and an integrated conception that convinces throughout both big works. Fischer's own cadenzas seem a bit odd today, but facinating nonetheless. His Mozart has none of the mincing approach prevalent at the time, a modern conception for all seasons. Bryan Crimp's splendid transfers are beyond praise, solid and detailed. --Dan Davis

Mozart concertos were rarities on disc before Edwin Fischer took up their cause in the '30s. Fischer's 1933 D Minor (K. 466) may not have the breadth and other-worldly phrASINg of his '50s remake, but the pianist's ravishing, effortless tone glows more gorgeously in APR's new transfers. The give and take between piano and orchestra evokes a true chamber ambiance here as well as in the E-flat concerto and slight but attractive D-major Rondo. While you'll find more of Mozart's tensile, dramatic persona through Artur Schnabel and Perter Serkin, Fischer's fingers don't merely sing, they breathe, even in his original, rather naive cadenzas. Yes, APR's an expensive label, but this one's worth every penny. --Jed Distler
