Run-of-the-mill.......2007-01-18
Excelente.......2004-12-10
Excellent.......2002-06-11
Bold and Brilliant.......2001-11-06
That said, I have mixed feelings about Karajan. I mostly enjoy his recordings. He has a controlled, dispassionate approach to his music that makes it a bit passive at times, but Karajan gets past that by letting the music speak for itself. Instead of muddling a great piece with silly interpretative ideas, his calm style lets the composers' ideas come across unscathed.
The Moldeau, also known as Vltava is a great rendition, as is Les Preludes. Karajan renders them masterfully, as I said, letting the majesty of these glorious pieces shine through. I was surprised by the orchestral version of the Hungarian Rhapsody, but it is a good performance, although I am partial to the original piano.
All said, I would highly recommend this recording, although it does not have much on it. If you like good Romantic music though, you really ought to have it.

Liszt Crazy!.......2000-11-23
First, the music is great. Les Preludes is especially good music. Also, they are all short works (about 15-20 minutes each) . . . which is important for a busy guy like me. I don't have 1 1/2 hours to listen to one Mahler symphony. Recording quality - high. Finally, look at that price - like $6.00 for some 70 minutes of music!

Zubin conducts Bohemian.......2000-04-20
His most famous, Les Preludes, is played magnificently, featuring a quirky little melody, erupting in a glorious ending.
Hamlet and Orpheus are the quieter selections of this recording and played with stunning beauty. The harps of Orpheus bring a brilliant shine to the music, and the drama of Hamlet is wrung-out in a truly revolutionary, yet Shakespearian manner.
The two showstoppers, however, are Mazeppa and Hunnenschlacht. In both the brass takes over and blasts away the rest of the program. While both are truly exciting, it is the Battle of the Huns that features organ in a most majesterial manner, on this particular recording, it creates a gothic feeling, adding to the wild Bohemian nature of Liszt's writing.
No need to worry, Zubin Mehta, as the wrangler of the Berlin Philharmonic, has let his wild steeds buck in this recording while keeping them fenced in. All aspects of the sound, interpretation, and performance are pristine, with great color and imagination. If you are a true music lover this CD is a must. If you are new to the orchestral music of Liszt this will be far from a disappointment. If you love exciting music in a romantic fashion, click on order this CD.

Forgotten Liszt.......2005-07-12
First off, the pieces themselves. Though "Orpheus" is sometimes recorded, the remaining three are more or less unknown. And yes, I intend to argue that the neglect is quite unjust. The best piece here is easily "Orpheus," which is a beautiful, poetic, shimmering score--showing that Liszt was far more than mere virtuosity and bombast. But the remaining works are equally inspired and fascinating, though perhaps lack the last measure of precision and editorial shrewdness. "From the Cradle to the Grave" is a very late work, one that actually came decades after the series of 12 symphonic poems. It's a relatively short piece for Liszt, with a haunting first movement, showcasing the late-style Liszt, followed by a driving danse macabre, and capped off by a slower, somber reflection on life's end. A very effective piece that should be played more often. No one seems to have anything good to say about "The Ideals," possibly due to its length. Its program (based on Schiller) seems very similar to "Les Preludes," but the music is far less trimphant and tuneful. That said, it's a remarkably varied piece, full of rich melodies and extremely sensitive orchestration. And okak, though a bit long, I don't find it a bit boring and after several listens am really starting to love it. Finally, we have "Hamlet," which is a exciting, full-blooded Romantic portrait of the Danish prince. As Liszt himself admitted, Ophelia and much else of the play is disregared for Hamlet's mental anguish and thoughts of revenge. But it's a remarkably effective piece with great brass and swirling strings that would be aped by everyone from Wagner to Tchaikovsky. In fact, the more you listen to Liszt's orchestral works, the less pioneering most late Romantic composers sound.
The New Zealand orchestra plays with the utmost committment and really shines throughout. The sound is quite good and everything "sounds" on this CD. It's one of my all-time favorite Liszt discs, and at this price, it certainly pays to be curious. Enjoy.

Liszt's tone poems are "respected" more than loved. It's kind of easy to see why--the thematic material is not always distinguished, and the orchestration--however interesting and experimental--is often just plain screechy. But maybe that's part of the point. As the inventor of the "symphonic poem," Liszt was trying to create a piece of symphonic length and continuity based on the transformation of just one or two themes. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but the results are seldom dull. Bernard Haitink's performances are very musical, and they are attractively recorded. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:

Rounding up from a 4.5.......2004-09-07
As I stated in my review of the first set, these are difficult to understand completely because of the general literary and cultural illiteracy that plagues America, particularly the youth. All the poems have a literary inspiration - Hamlet, Orpheus, Faust, the "Hero" of German Literature. Listening to these without knowing the story or person behind it is like eating wonderful without knowing what it is.

Thrilling Liszt performances - an excellent bargain.......2007-04-08
Just a few remarks on some of the performances in this box.
Tasso, Lamento e Trionfo. Here I must say that Joó's performance is a complete success. He avoids the bombast temptation that permeates Masur's overloaded version (EMI), and his account is far more arresting that Silvestri's interpretation (EMI).
Les Préludes. This is the super classic among tone poems. Competition is hard to beat, e.g., Fricsay (DG) and Scherchen (Westminster), but Joó's interpretation is very good.
Orpheus. Beecham (EMI) owns this tone poem, with his extremely intense performance. But Joó is not far behind him.
Mazeppa. My first choice would be Scherchen (Westminster) or Golavanov (IMG), but Joó is very good too. Excellent grandeur in supreme sound.
Héroïde Funébre. Joó's patriotic commitment is here unmatched on record, together with Golavanov (IMG). In contrast to Masur, who underplays this poem, he goes the long version.
Hunnenschlacht. Scherchen (Westminster) is unmatched. Nonetheless, this is an excellent, dramatic performance I don't want to be without.
Dorfschenker Tanz, Mephisto Waltz #1. Scherchen and his Viennese band (Westminster) own this poem, but Joó is second in line.
In sum, the only rivals with a complete sets are Masur (EMI), which is consistently dull and misconceived, and Haitink (Philips, two twofers), who also misunderstands the drama and tensions of Liszt's music. So if you look for an excellent complete set with Liszt's tone poems, or just a fine selection, Árpád Joó and his Budapest Symphony Orchestra should be your first choice. But the serious collector should also consider the classic selections from Scherchen (Westminster), Beecham/Silvestri (EMI), Weingartner (IMG), and Golavanov (IMG).

What one hears on the mountain.......2006-11-23
A result of Liszt's meditations was the series of "Symphonic Poems," beginning with "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne" in 1847 and concluding thirty-six years later with "Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe." The thirteen "Symphonic Poems" vary greatly. Some, like "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne" and "Die Ideale" (1857), resemble actual symphonies: one may analyze them into a three- or four-movement pattern resembling that established by Haydn and Beethoven. These works differ from standard-issue symphonies, however, in incorporating characteristic gestures from operatic and theatrical music. The opening bars of "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne," for example, with the string tremolo in the bass register and the quiet drums, are scene-painting, suggesting the waves that crash on the shore at the beginning of the Victor Hugo poem that inspired Liszt. "Die Ideale" gives the impression of a linked series of operatic scenes that depict the gradual transformation of the protagonist. What all the "Symphonic Poems" have in common is the technique that Liszt invented for them: the so-called metamorphosis of the theme. Thus all the sections of "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne" and all the sections of "Die Ideale" find unity through derivation from basic intervals that Liszt introduces in the opening bars. The metamorphosis of the theme would prove a watershed in the post-Beethoven development of orchestral music. Alexander Glazunov in Russia, César Franck in France, Antonin Dvorak in Bohemia, and Jean Sibelius in Finland would all borrow Liszt's innovation. So would Liszt's successors in the German-speaking countries, Richard Strauss and Arnold Schoenberg.
Interest in Liszt's "Symphonic Poems" has had its phases. For many years, record-collectors knew only "Les préludes" (1848) and "Orpheus" (1854), among the tamest of the thirteen. "Orpheus" began life as an overture and is formally the most orthodox of the set; "Les préludes" resembles a compressed four-movement symphony. Thirty years ago, Bernard Haitink boldly recorded all thirteen of the "Symphonic Poems," leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, with the set appearing on the Philips label. About the same time, Vox assigned Siegfried Landauer and the Music for Westchester Symphony Orchestra to make a "Vox Box" of the same works. Haitink's interpretation could be purchased in the 1990s as two double-compact-disc sets and might still be available; Landauer's has disappeared, unfortunately. Two or three Hungarian orchestras have traversed the baker's dozen of these scores over the years. James Conlon and Kurt Masur entered the lists in the same repertory in the early 1990s, although availability is again a question. Recently, both Naxos and Chandos have commenced surveys of Liszt's innovative sequence. Naxos employs Michael Halász, a Hungarian, and Chandos employs Milan-born Gianandrea Noseda; they record with the New Zealand Symphony and the BBC Philharmonic respectively.
Noseda's program embraces the two best-known items from Liszt's cycle, "Les préludes" and "Orpheus," but extends also to "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne" and "Tasso, Lamento e Triunfo" (1849). I can remember no previous recorded performance that treats "Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne" so effectively, beginning with the impressionistic opening bars, where the low strings deliver an especially ominous tremolo and the timpanist adds his emphasis at precisely the right dynamic level. An unsympathetic critic of Liszt once described this "Mountain Symphony" as consisting structurally of "a prelude to a prelude to a prelude." The charge is unfair, but a slack performance might make it seem that way. Noseda does push a bit faster that Haitink, but he also brings out the contrasts, which Haitink tended to smooth over. Noseda performs the same service for "Tasso, Lamento e Triunfo," but here he mitigates the bombast of the concluding section, making the whole score seem more dignified than it sometimes does. In "Les préludes," Noseda honors the basic symphonic structure; he also reminds us how much the chorale-like finale, with its blaring brass, anticipates a Bruckner-finale. The sound of this Chandos disc helps in "Orpheus," the quietest of the "Symphonic Poems," and one with an important role for the solo harp (naturally, given the subject). In short, Noseda makes one of the best cases yet for the seriousness of these works. A second volume in the series has appeared, featuring the "Faust Symphony" and the late addition to the "Symphonic Poems," "Von der Wiege bis zum grabe."
