The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

This is a beautiful CD to listen to. The music is very relaxing. It reminds me of the the beautiful recital music I listened to in my college years...very professionally and well done.

Essential listening.......2001-08-23

Norbert's playing is without doubt breathtaking in every sense. For all those classical guitar lovers out there, I would recommended buying this CD. The phrasing, dynamics, tonal variation and articulation are very well conveyed in all his pieces. For those studying the Segovia edition of the Sor studies and Tarrega's concert pieces suchas Recuerdos Alhmabra, this would be extremely beneficial.

Splendid Spanish Studies for Guitar.......2001-02-02

If early music lessons have caused you to view "studies" or "exercises" with disdain, a CD like this one could come as a real eye-opener. These compositions by Sor, Aguado, and Tarrega show that the concept of a beautiful teaching work is not an oxymoron, but, rather, can and does constitute beautiful solo guitar performances.

This beautifully studio-recorded disc from 1989 was, if I am correctly infomed, Gerald Garcia’s fifth CD for Naxos (following on from “Concierto de Aranjuez”, “Brazilian Portrait”, “Latin American Guitar Festival” and “Baroque Guitar Favourites”). It contains some of the “prettiest” music for classical guitar that I have ever heard, although I should add in the same breath that there is, in fact, no music for classical guitar at all on the disc – all the pieces here recorded are transcriptions of music for violin solo (Paganini’s Caprices), for violin and guitar (Paganini’s Grand Sonata), for piano (Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words) and for voice and piano (Schubert’s Lieder). The Paganini and Mendelssohn appear to have been transcribed by Garcia himself, whereas the Schubert was congenially adapted for the instrument by Johann Kaspar Mertz, a 19th century Bohemian guitarist. The title of the CD, “Romantic Guitar Favourites”, is therefore a complete misnomer, but that in no way affects the enjoyment to be had from listening to what, to my non-expert ears at any rate, is some excellent guitar-playing in first-rate audio quality. The notes, written by Gerald Garcia himself, are brief but informative.

Outstanding Collection of Beautiful Guitar Music.......2006-04-10

This CD is outstanding. Every selection, from Vivaldi's full Guitar Concerto in D Major, to the Adagion from Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, is excellent. My favorite recording of the Concierto de Aranjuez remains the one by John Williams, but the Adagio movement on this CD is an excellent performance. The Vivaldi Guitar Concerto is even better than the recording of it that I have by the Romeros, made in the 1960's. The transcription of Schubert's Standchen is among the most heartfelt versions I have heard of that melody.

The highlight of this CD, for me, are the two selections from Satie: Gymnopedie Nos. 1 and 3. These versions are even better than the ones recorded by Christopher Parkening in the late 1960's. In Parkening's recording, there is only the guitar, in its solitary beauty. On other versions I've heard, such as the one with Andre Previn conducting, on Telarc, the transcription is for a full orchestra. These other versions are also excellent, but this one, for me, is the very best, the most lyrical, deep, and achingly beautiful. On this selection, there is Garcia's sublime playing on the guitar, interwoven with the sound of one, solitary, mournful, lonely horn in the background, and a few strains of music at just the right moments from a discretely beautiful orchestra. The horn and orchestra accompany and accentuate but never eclipse the guitar. The two Satie pieces on this CD are small gems; they are wonderful slices of musical heaven. Garcia's slow tempo in the Satie pieces creates an exquisite mood; it is as hard in some ways to play a slow passage as it is to play a fast one.

Garcia has a magic touch, and although I had not heard any of his recordings until I bought this CD, I enjoyed his performances of these works as much and, in some cases, more than I have enjoyed to performances of Christopher Parkening, John Williams, and the Romeros. The Bonfa and Villa-Lobos selections are also wonderful, and all of the selections from the various composers flow very nicely, from one track to another, held together by Garcia's outstanding style and technique. Highly recommended.

Excellent collection of peaceful music........1999-08-17

If you are looking for music that can soothe the soul, buy this collection. Each cd has a collection of excerpts from classical artists which are peaceful in style. Works from big-time composers such as Beethoven and Bach are included, but many outstanding pieces are drawn from lesser known artists such as Godard and Paganini. I use these cds as background music at work, where the wide swings in volume found in most of classical music would be inappropriate. As always with Naxos, the recordings are of excellent quality.

This Christmas album gives you the Christmas Spirit, John Gracie has the voice to sing Christmas music. It is so intimate, the melodies are sung the way they should be sung and I love the selections, everyone should have this CD in their home at Christmas, I am a big John Gracie fan!
