        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A set rich with history and fine performances.......2003-12-23

Once upon a time, there was an orchestra who was to burst on the international scene but, who was before it, quite a good ensemble under their affable leader, Walter Susskind. The St. Louis Symphony, which realized incredible heights with Slatkin at the helm, here gives fine performances, showing once again that Slatkin didn't have to start at ground zero.

The cello concerto is given a thoughtful, not-playing-to-the-crowd performance. A wonderful change from all the hysterics that are often brought in to the piece. Silent Woods is a wonderful, contemplative piece that is worth knowing, and here is the perfect opportunity.

The violin concerto is given a fine performance, although Ricci is not in his prime. Despite that, he is still a great musician, and it shows. The Romanze is in the same mold as Silent Woods. You should really get to know it!

The piano concerto, kind of a goofy piece from Dvorak's pen, is still very enjoyable. Here it is given a performance by one of its biggest advocates. While others may quibble and say his other performances are better, this performance is quite fine in all aspects.

Well-engineered discs, too. These were originally recorded by the Vox folks. Definitely a bargain and worth every penny...IMHO!

This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Atmospheric, and Beautiful.......2006-06-15

Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

4 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The Best overall stress reducing music cd ever!.......2005-01-17

This is by far one of my favorite cd's to listen to at the end of a long day. Especially in the winter months curled up by a fire and a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Only problem is..........2005-01-04

I always fall asleep by the third song. It is so relaxing and wonderful in assortment.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Relaxing........2003-01-17

Truly one of the best collections of relaxing classical music. A must have for couples when the kids are gone, or just some quiet time alone. Soothing to the mind, body and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of Slava's eight recordings of Dvorák's Cello concerto.......2007-06-12

This fine Testament issue boasts a remastered release of Mstislav Rostropovich's first stereo recording of Dvorák's Cello concerto, op. 104, originally released by EMI in 1957. At the conductor's rostrum, Sir Adrian Boult leads an impressive orchestra - the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, at its very peak. Boult's interpretation of the orchestral part is second to none: it's a very taut, balanced interpretation, very different from the later excesses by von Karajan (DG) and Ozawa (Erato). Thoughtful and controlled, but with perfect understanding of the work's structure, to hear Boult's interpretation is like hearing this concerto for the first time. Thus Slava's warm, lyrical tone is in far better company here than elsewhere - perhaps with the exception of Talich's magisterial account (Supraphon), which also is an unforgettable performance.

Sound is vintage but very fine. The cello is in the front, and the orchestral details are well recorded.

This recording also features Slava's first stereo recording of Saint-Saëns' cello concerto (1956), now under Malcolm Sargent's baton, conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. That performance is also of great interest, because it's Slava's finest account of this work, and it's recorded in vintage stereo sound.

In addition, we are also offered a selection of minor pieces for cello and piano, with Slava and Alexander Dedyukhin: David Popper's "Dance of the Elves"; Debussy's "Minstrels" and "Clair de lune"; Scrabin's "Étude op. 8 no. 11"; and Rachmaninov's "Vocalise". These memorable sessions are recorded in mono.

Thus this recording offers maximum value for your money. You get an outstanding performance in fine sound. If you only want one of Slava's recordings of the Dvorák concerto, grab this one. I recommend it warmly. But if sound is not an issue, consider also Slava's first recording of this concerto with Talich.

5 out of 5 stars classic early rostropovitch.......2001-01-12

This is a wonderful disc. The short pieces are enthralling - and very individually done, with, for example, a very slow but beautifully sustained tempo for 'Vocalise'. The Saint-Saens is brisk, lively, dramatic and full of character. The prize of the collection, though, is this lovely version of the Dvorak. Here. Rosropovitch lingers a bit less than in later performances (e.g. the famous, but rather plummy one with Karajan) and the music seems better - stronger and more symphonic - for it. Nothing is perfunctory, with the gentler lyrical passages beautifully phrased, but the whole thing always moves forward and has a constant sense of purpose, of 'going somewhere'. It's riveting. Recordings are good for their age and fully enjoyable. Much recommended.

          Bad remastering

Any recording that bears Mr Rostropovich's name will make me spring to attention, but this time - sorry. Mr Rostropovich's accompanying explanation (see page 4 of the accompanying leaflet) for the cavalry-charge tempo of Dvorak's concerto (it was performed, by him and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under Svetlanov's directorship, on the same day (August 21, 1968) as the soviet invasion of Praga) under stress for an initially hostile reception of the public, may have been a good reason on the occasion, but no longer. One has a right to value for one's money - unless the buyer is a buff who wants to have a complete collection of different recordings of the same piece - and this performance is not par with the otherwise standard of excellency of both soloist and orchestra. For instance, the poignancy of the second movement is completely lost. Hadn't I known what I was listening to, I might not have recognized the concert. The normal duration of Dvorak's concerto is, actually, 38 minutes - such as here (or so, at least, my extensive reference book about symphonic music tells me) and it's the same in another CD I have of it. The rub rather seems to lie, herein,in the re-masterization of pieces performed respectively 42 (Schumann's) and 35 (Dvorak's and Tchaikowsky's) years ago: it is simply not up to present standards. The warning that this whole CD is a remasterization of so long-past performances should have accompanied the presentation on the detail page for it in the Amazon[.com] Website where, instead, it appears as a February 2003 recording. So, it's two stars less for this reason, and the other three just as an homage to the glorious career and standing of such a soloist, an orchestra and a conductor.

4 out of 5 stars Piano concerto is an excellent presentation........1998-11-05

I give this CD 4 stars because the cello concerto is recorded so often by much better orchestras and soloists that it is a shame to by this CD for that purpose. However, the piano concerto is rarely performed and even less recorded. I myself have played an accompanyment for this piece and know that it is magnificant and full of lyricism despite its lack of being pianistic. That doesn't stop virtuosi from playing pieces such as the Tchaikovsky violin concerto, which is not violinistic , it just makes it more of a challenge. The concerto is played wonderfully by the orchestra and soloist. The pianist does not let the part consume him nor do we only hear a machine's interpretation and only hear Dvorak. There is genuine soul in the playing. The orchestra also does not over power (partly due to decent mixing) but also handles the difficult score in grand style. All I can say is that this is the recording to buy for this concerto because the price is right and the performance exceeds the cost 100 fold. I thoroughly enjoyed tracks 1-3. Look to Casals, Ma, Rose or Rostropovitch for the cello concerto.

James Kreger does an astonishing job with Dvorak's and Herbert's Cello Concertos. Djong Victorin Yu handles the Philharmonia Orchestra with passion, with verve, and especially with sensation. Also, the CD is at mid-price. A good buy for an impressive recording.
