Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Correlli's Concerti grossi, op. 6.......2007-03-24

As a person with a passion for music, especially classical, this CD is one the prettiest and the best.

5 out of 5 stars Corelli's famous Concerti by my favorite period instrument orchestra and conductor.......2005-11-12

Trevor Pinnock's recording of Corelli's Op. 6 Concerti grossi will not be to all tastes. Those raised on traditional instrument recordings by such as Max Goberman/Vienna Sinfonietta (Odyssey LPs, circulated in the 1970s) or Paul Angerer/Southwest German Chamber Orchestra (Vox) may not like the clipped articulation and fast tempos Pinnock uses. But the English Concert is a joy to hear: and can THEY PLAY! The allegros sizzle with joy and tension (in the minor key movements) and I find myself unable to resist conducting myself to the rhythmic patterns they generate. I think Corelli would be pleased, and I doubt he ever heard this good a performance of his Opus 6 Concertos.

Concerto 8, subtitled "Christmas" may be the most famous Op. 6 Concerto. Pinnock's way with it may seem superficial, and tempos are faster than what I'm used to in this work. But I'm used to recordings of I Musici (Philips), Angerer (Vox), and Shepherd/Cantilena (Chandos). The closing "Pastorale" doesn't seem to have enough time to breathe, but Pinnock is more sensitive to the Baroque performance practice principles where Siciliana and Pastorale movements are played more quickly than 20th century conductors led them, adhering to more Romanticized performance practice.

As a set, I give this high marks, and there is alot of energy and joy without slighting Corelli's music. The recorded sound is also very good, and the strings have a full, rich sound, even with no vibrato and period instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Concerto.......2005-11-05

The _Christmas Concerto_ (Opus 6 Number 8) is the best on the CD! If you like Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" or the Bach "Double" but have never heard Corelli's Christmas Concerto, I think you will like it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Corelli: Master and Commander of Enchanting Melodies.......2005-03-25

In a world dominated by Gabrelli and Vivaldi, Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi (Op. 6) are gems. The performance of Pinnock and the English Concert is superb and the Archive recording crystal clear and in high fidelity. To the inexperienced ear the components of each piece flow together, yet the distinguishable melodies create a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere -- either for a listener intent on each note, or as atmosphere while going about the day's business or leisure. Guided to this recording by the soundtrack for the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," you will be not long into the first of this two CD set before being rewarded for your purchase. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music performed to perfection.......2005-02-27

Corelli's opus 6 concerto grossi are what I consider to be ideal reading music. Some of the most beautiful music from the baroque period, Corelli sometimes doesn't get his due. However, without his remarkable accomplishments, we probably wouldn't be blessed with the fine concerto grossi from men such as Vivaldi and J.S.Bach and others

This particular performance is about as good as you will find. I've always found Trevor Pinnock's English Concert to be precise and clear. Comberti's performance is especially good on these CDs.

If you are looking to curl up with a good book and a bottle of excellent wine, this CD is an ideal companion to a wonderful evening.

1 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2001-06-21

I purchased this CD when I was looking for an addition to my library in the Baroque section. This music is an example of the very finest in Baroque composition and is well interpreted by St Martin in the Field. Number one of the two CD's that I received was stolen along with my portable player. I was so impressed by the music that I ordered another package even though it resulted in a duplicate of #2. As I write this I am listening to the CD and can only be amazed by both the beauty of the music and the deliciously rich presentation by the orchestral strings.

5 out of 5 stars Conerti Grossi Op 6.......2000-10-27

There are many ways to enjoy the music on this CD. As with many recordings from the Baroque era this one makes great wallpaper. I find that hearing it while I do other things brightens my day without being intrusive. Although ambient music is usually credited as a product of the twentieth century, I find that this music also creates a delightful ambience. On the level of musical history, Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) is an interesting composer. Handel and Locatelli are some of his more famous students. The Brandenburg Concertos reveal that Bach also was influenced by his music. Timothy A. Smith identifies Corelli as a "critical link in the evolution of the Baroque concerto grosso and sonata formats." He is credited as a master of the trio sonata which became the source of the Classical era symphonic form. A pioneer of violin technique and originator of synchronized bowing in an orchestra, he was hailed as the greatest virtuoso of the violin in his time because of his technical mastery. In modern vernacular, he was a "Rock Star". Corelli's place in history makes this music interesting to me, knowing that he was held in high esteem by great composers. This is not to suggest that the music is uninteresting. I find that when I pay attention, I am amply rewarded. C.#3 in C minor has an arresting beginning with sustained chords which remind me of some of Haydn's symphonies. C.#10 in C major breaks with tradition as it contains five movements. This may not seem scandalous to us three centuries removed, however, these types of details provoked prolonged and acrimonious dispute, according Christopher Hogwood who wrote the notes. He writes that a notorious scandal erupted when, in one of Corelli's Opus 2 trios, it was suspected he had used consecutive fifths. Both the Preludio and Adagio are grand and the Allegro approaches a frenetic pace. C#9 in F major introduces the Adagio with a lilting melody on a theorbo (lute). All of the Concerti are great, even so, these are the ones I enjoy the most. You may find others which you enjoy. If you are interested in one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period or in music which is pleasent, this CD will be interesting to you.

5 out of 5 stars I think that this is a wonderfull compolation of music!.......1999-02-04

I think that this recording is great! I enjoy playing many of these same works in the orchestra that I am in! I strongly recomend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fresh, intense, serene........1998-11-28

I'm not really educated when it comes to classical music. I just know what I like. This recording of Arcangelo Corelli is absolutely astounding! Each and every piece on both disks is superb. It's soothing and yet alive.

#10 Grave - Andante Largo is oh so short, but soulfully melodious and intricate.

The violeins in #14 Allemanda: Allegro are crisp and clean.

#15 Corrente: Vivace is elegant.

If you like Vivaldi and Scarlatti you will like these two disk. Well worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Bright, energetic and lively Baroque.......2007-06-08

I really enjoy the Capella Istropolitana. They have such a wonderful and bright sound. I find the works on this CD to be well played and the tempo selection for each movement very good. I listen to Baroque on my daily commute to and from work. I have a particular affinity for Italian Baroque, so I very much enjoy listening to the man who influenced so many other composers of the period. Great CD and an invaluable addition to your Italian Baroque collection.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 of Corelli Concerti Grossi, Op.6 as fine as Volume 1!!!.......2005-12-26

As I wrote in my review of Volume 1, Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 created a sensation when they were written, influenced composers like Handel in the composition of his Concerti Grossi, Op.6, and have won raves up until today.

The performances Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, nos. 7-12, by the Capella Istropolitana under conductor Krchek, are as fine as their performances of the first six Corelli Concerti Grossi. These performances, which are played on modern instruments, are the ones I personally prefer: They are incisively and beautifully played, follow performance practice, are very rich and warm sounding. Whether you opt for modern or period instruments is a matter of taste. (I own two recordings of period performances of the Corelli Opus 6 Concerti Grossi which are very fine: Pinnock/English Concert, and Goodman/Brandenburg Consort.) This is glorious, wonderfully affecting music I wouldn't want to be without. I choose to leave the modern versus authentic instrument debate to others.

5 out of 5 stars My high praise for Volume 1 applies here too!.......2005-11-29

My high praise for Volume 1 of Capella Istropolitana/Jaroslav Krechek of Corelli's Opus 6 Concerti grossi applies here, too.
For details, check out my review of Volume 1. I recommend interested listeners who like Corelli to get both volumes, as sound and playing are excellent.

You can't go wrong with this: highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars baroque beauty.......2004-03-21

This is seamless, glorious baroque music in a splendid performance; The melodies are lovely, and the way the instruments are combined is a thing of constant beauty. As it is stated in the liner notes, "The surviving compositions of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) are relatively few in number but disproportionately far-reaching in influence", proving once again that it is quality not quantity that matters, and his 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6, are some of the most exquisite pieces from that time period, and ones that were to inspire the music of future generations.

The Capella Istropolitana are musicians from the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, that started as a chamber group in 1983, and now have grown in size to perform and record the Mozart and Haydn symphonies, Vivaldi, Bach, and much more.
Jaroslav Krecek is an award-winning composer as well as conductor, and has led the Capella for many years.
Recorded in 1990, the sound is clear and crisp, and total playing time 65'45.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless Musicianship!.......2007-05-25

Some have categorized this recording as "romantic," but those of us who are a bit older will remember when I Musici represented an informed approach to Baroque music. If your taste runs to the more asthmatic sounds of period instruments, you might find this recording a bit too ripe, but I'd characterize it more as robust and lush. The bottom line is that this ensemble's musicianship is impeccable, the playing vibrant and joyful, and the sound is luscious. I can enjoy an "original instrument" performance as well, but I'd hate to give up the kind of gorgeous music-making this ensemble invariably delivers. It's far and away my favorite Corelli recording. (By the way, when will Amazon's data-entry people learn how to recognize who the composer is on a recording? Enzo Altobelli is merely the cellist in the concertino group.)

4 out of 5 stars Accomplished, but not my style.......2006-01-08

Whoever said these performances are far from the period-instrument performances commonly heard today was exactly right--and I have to admit I found this recording old-fashioned. It's not just that the tempi are slower than we're accustomed to (or have become accustomed to); the sluggish pace and interpretation make Corelli seem un-baroque, and that just doesn't sound right. It's also a touch too sentimental. I think of Corelli as a brilliant light from a very different age, and this performance makes him sound like a not-yet-Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, slightly Romanticized Corelli with a large chamber orchestra.......2005-11-24

I classify this is beautiful, slightly Romanticized Corelli Concerti grossi with a large chamber orchestra. The Swiss/Italian ensemble I Musici (without conductor) plays very well in these late 1960s recordings of Corelli's most famous, most often recorded works. Sometimes their allegro movement tempos are a little slower than we are used to hearing today: compare Pinnock/English Concert, in their 1988 recording, but they are well recorded and well played.

I especially like the rich full string sound in slower movements. I Musici's players take their time to make points, and have near perfect ensemble. This is how I imagine Bruno Walter (1876-1962) would conduct Corelli's Opus 6, had he recorded this music late in his career: it is rich, warm, and far from the period instrument recordings being made over the past 15 years. (There is a 1930s recording of Walter conducting the "Christmas" Concerto grosso, No. 8 in G minor, on Dutton).

My favorite Concertos in this collection are No. 4 in D Major, and the "Christmas" Concerto, No. 8 in g minor. Not all are as memorable as these, but they have great tunes which will move you. I also like Trevor Pinnock/English Concert, for period instrument Corelli Op. 6 (DG Archiv) and Adrian Shepherd/Cantilena (Chandos) for a modern chamber orchestra, but I really like this, too. I Musici does the job very well: highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2002-12-16

This recording of the fabulous grand concertos by Corelli is one of the best recordings that I own. These concertos should not be taken for granted; they set a precedent for the Concerti grossi by Handel, Geminiani, and many others.

I Musici employs their impeccable technique, tone, articulation, and dynamics in this recordings. Philips held up their part of the deal; the sound quality on the recording is unbelievable. No other recording that I own is as crisp and clean as this recording is. A must buy for fans of baroque music.

5 out of 5 stars Another great I Musici recording!.......2002-02-15

This is a great recording of Corelli's Op. 6. I Musici as usual shines. There are other versions available (that are more expensive, too), but this one is the best one out there. The sound is crisp, the playing fluid and lively, and the overall sound quality nice and clear.

Corelli is one of the big names in Baroque music, so he shouldn't be overlooked. If you're serious about building up your Baroque library, then you should consider including this recording in your collection. I own a number of discs featuring the talents of I Musici, and this 2-disc set ranks right up there with their finest recordings.

5 out of 5 stars This is part of the Corelli: Complete works from Brilliant Classics, and a great bargain.......2007-05-04

Jan-Pieter Belder/Musica Amphion's Corelli Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, recorded in 2004, is also part of the Corelli Complete works from Brilliant Classics, and is a great bargain. The recorded sound is excellent, as are the performances. Musica Amphion is a Dutch period instrument orchestra comprised of young musicians: they play with an authentic, straight forward style free of mannerisms or distortions, and yet have a rich, full sound which is clean and pleasant to listen to. There is not the wimpy sound associated with some period recordings, nor the scraping and other noises which can become distracting.

Belder's Corelli Opus 6 does not pale in comparison with other recordings: I Musici (Philips); Krcheck/Capella Istropolitana (Naxos); Pinnock/English Concert (DG Archiv); or Shepherd/Cantilena (Chandos). Allegro movements are very fast, but not excessively so; Adagios are appropriately expressive but never cloying, and really lovely. I find Belder/Musica Amphion very satisfying, and would recommend these to anyone unless they absolutely HATE period instruments.

The Hybrid SACD sound on these discs is likely superior to the regular DDD sound of the complete Corelli by Belder (Brilliant), but since I do not have high end equipment to listen on, cannot judge an A/B comparison.
I would recommend either this, or the complete Belder Corelli.

Geminiani was a talented composer, and one of the greatest violinists of his day (he died in 1762). His made his career largely in England, and was a colleague of both Corelli, who was his teacher, and Handel. His concertos follow what Corelli called the Church Sonata form--generally four movements in a slow-fast-slow-fast pattern. Also like Corelli, Geminiani published very little music, there being only three collections of concertos of which Opus 3 was the most important and popular. They are exceptionally well performed by Fabio Biondi, who is a real master of the Baroque violin. Sonics and presentation are truly first class as well. --David Hurwitz

      5 out of 5 stars Noble melancholy.......2000-12-06

Before the late, galante Baroque familiar to drive-time classical music listeners, usually in the form of Vivaldi, there was a romantic Baroque. Romantic Baroque sought expressiveness in the midst of its contrapuntal intensity. J. S. Bach is a familiar late example of this deeply-felt Baroque intensity. Geminiani is another example who deserves a wider audience.

He gets just a footnote in the textbooks because he was not responsible for major technical innovations. His contemporaries referred to him as 'Il Furibondo,' sensing a certain wildness in his rhythmic and melodic intentions. This is not Baroque music for the dinner, the bathtub, or the drive home. This is Baroque music that demands your attention.

The concerti in minor keys display the most inspired melodies, and fortunately they predominate. Their contrapuntal depth is always several layers deeper than you'll hear in Vivaldi. The several reprises in Op. 3, no. 6, and the unusual gigue of the final Allegro will strike you with their inventiveness, as will the remarkable opening and fugato of the G minor No. 2.

This is a good performance and recording of these remarkable works. Geminiani is a composer who will serve you well to enoble your melancholy moods.
