5 out of 5 stars Haebler - one of the 3 best Mozart pianists!.......2005-12-18

There is a lot of injustice in musical prestige. Many less worth artists enter the Pantheon, while others, sometimes really-great, are often forgotten. Ingrid Haebler is among the latters.

For many, Murray Perahia is considered to be the greatest Mozart pianists of our day - and rightly so. But if you ask keen music lovers to rate the following ones, they will surely name Brendel, Uchida, Eschenbach, Pires or even Barenboim. Most of these are more glamorous, but not necessarily better. If you ask me, I would name Ingrid Haebler and Jean Bernard Pommier - much less conspicuous artists, but to my taste - great Mozart performers.

Haebler, together with the orchestra, give a very delicate, gentle Mozart, especially in no. 19. Her playing is very balanced, but definitely not boring. Her touch is incredible, sensitive but not sissy at all. The tempo is very solid. In no. 20 she adopts a little more stormy, even romantic interpretation - but still, it's very convincing. Haebler really breathes Mozart, and you can feel that. This is what I expect of a great Mozart player - and Heabler did not let me down.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra (note: it's not the renowned Vienna Philharmonic!) sounds somewhat like a chamber orchestra in no. 19 - and that's only a merit, in this case. In no. 20 they gain their strength bach, and the sound is rich and full.

It's an ADD disc - but the sound quality is good.

In short, a type of Mozart you rarely hear today. Warmly recommended. Not to mention the ridiculous price!
