De Pachmann's Successor.......2005-12-06

... and there is no higher praise.
Vladimir de Pachmann was lauded in the late 19th century for rescuing Chopin from Lisztian virtuosi and restoring him to the charm, intimacy and mystery of the salon (although De Pachmann managed to make his confessional tone carry in the largest halls).
More recently, the salon aspects of Chopin have been disparaged and pianists like Rubinstein were praised for giving us more masculine, literal performances. But Rubinstein, who spent more time training in Berlin with Joachim and his circle than he ever did in Poland, always struck me as being more sympathetic to Brahms than he was to Chopin. Indeed, it took many years and a changing aesthetic for Rubinstein's Chopin to be hailed by the same audiences who considered Toscanini and Heifetz to reign supreme.
Which brings us to Maryla Jonas. She was Polish through and through and somehow, like the Russian De Pachmann, channeled what I sense was Chopin's own capricious, witty, nostalgic and nocturnal poetry.
It speaks well for Rubinstein that, though his compatriot's playing was so different from his own, he helped bring Jonas back to the piano after the broken woman was forced to flee to Brazil to escape the Nazis. Sadly, Maryla Jonas was too ill to build a major carreer and died at just 48.
These 78's, lovingly restored by Roger Beardsley, are a precious link to the Chopin of his own time.

For anyone considering buying a CD of Chopin, this is a great one to get. The artists who play on this CD play wonderfully and absolutely demstrate that they know what they are doing with the piano. A fine example of some of the greatest Chopin works out there. If you enjoy the piano, you will love this CD.

Expressive and intelligent playing.......2006-08-16

Eliot Fisk plays beautifully on this recording. The choice of material is very interesting and refreshing and the interpretations are lively and intelligent as well as very romantic and beautiful. Fisk plays very appropriately for the music he selects, much of which falls solidly in the early 20th Century Segovia style. The Segovia arrangements of folk songs are not particularly challenging listening, but they are very enjoyable and often charming. The rest of the music provides a great introduction to some of the core Segovia repertoire that is not as well known today as, for instance, Sor, Giuliani, Tarrega, or Villa Lobos. In summation, the tone, technique, interpration, and musicality of these performances are all at an equally superlative level. The only drawback may be the odd occasional clicks in the recordings which do not necessarily correspond with any notes, and therefore are clearly a minor flaw in the recording rather than a fingernail or technique-related issue. This album is most definitely a worthwhile purchase.

wonderful CD!.......2002-12-05

This is a wonderful CD! @ a very nice price too! I must say that the recording could have been done better (hence, the 4 stars and the nice price.) But if you play classical guitar, then it will be a treat to hear this CD. Segovia was a genius when it came to composing for his beloved instrument and Fisk did a great job playing the material. I wish that the great recording guitarist like Fisk would treat us to more less-popular works such as the ones on this CD.
