4 out of 5 stars good, though some room for improvement.......2006-05-28

This cd is generally very very nice. I think this is only my 2nd cd with Marais music on it so I was interested to see if it was as good as the Marais stuff on Jordi Savall's Tous les Matins du Monde. I would say that I liked it about as much as that cd, except for the Couplets de Folies. On that track I thought the viol was too low in the mix. It wasn't "front and centre" like it is in Savall's version. Of the rest of the pieces on the disc the D major suite (tracks 5-10) is definitely my favourite; it's mostly slow & simltaneously happy & sad somehow. I think the other two suites are almost as good.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Interpretations of French Baroque Viola Pieces.......2005-10-23

French Baroque is not a very well known style in performance circles either by the performers themselves or audiences. In particular, viola performances are probably the least known or heard. The viola da gamba is the cello's predecessor and prominent in both English and French Early-Mid Baroque. The instrument has greater range and resonance with 7 strings. There are probably fewer than 300 professional players performing on this instrument today. There are probably 4-5 who are the best and the musicians here are not even close to the talent of the undisputed and unmatched French master violist, Jordi Savall: there is absolutely no comparison.

The pieces here are mostly too slow in their interpretations of the meter and the players are simply not proficient enough to play most of them in terms of technique and knowledge of the French Baroque style. The violas are groaning in slow agony or screeching most of the time which is completely at odds with the intentions of the composer. All of them are equally pathetic in their execution. Listen to a sample of Savall's performances such as on the soundtrack to 'All The Mornings of The World' and the music will simply explain itself for you to make your descisions in buying French Baroque. He also has the best performance of Lully's 'Les Concerts Royaux' that I have ever heard: this man is nothing less than a prodigy in his art of the viola and his direction of French Baroque. I have the utmost respect for this man as an artist: he is truly a living legend.

For French Baroque in general and especially for Marin Marais or other viola composers, there is no other performer/conductor than Jordi Savall worth listening to. Especially for viola, his closest contenders are still motionless on the ground while he is flying circles in the stratosphere: there is simply no comparison and his virtuosity is exponentially superior to every one else's. Find out for yourselves and you will soon be agreeing with what I say. Since they didn't mention him by name, it seems that the previous reviewers have not heard Savall and so I wouldn't give too much credence in their overgenerous ratings. Good luck in your search for great music!

5 out of 5 stars Great Baroque Music.......2005-09-29

This is another outstanding Naxos recording of hauntingly beautiful viola da gamba music from the era of great French kings and queens. Although the artists and recordings may not be the finest available, they are certainly fine enough for all but the most critical enthusiasts. If you really like these, search out the more expensive versions and double your pleasure!

3 out of 5 stars Nice music, not a great recording..........2003-08-13

As always, Marais' music is in a league of its own, and it is performed here with finesse and in a style appropriate to the music, but what disappointed me about this CD was the quality of the recording. It sounds like it was recorded in a room that was a little too small, and the result is a bogged down and at times irritatingly boxy recording.

5 out of 5 stars For all moods.......2003-01-30

I'm not an expert on classical music, and my review will not be a technical one - all I know is if you enjoy baroque and/or the deep, affecting tones of the viol, you will really enjoy this. This is a CD which is alternately pensive and stirring. Great stuff if you want to think about nothing or everything.

5 out of 5 stars The delights of 17th-century France.......2006-01-23

Having produced marvelous recordings of the Baroque eras of Germany, Italy and England ("Trios for 4" and "A Choice Collection"), the Palladian Ensemble settle into the more relaxed, richly harmonic music of the French Baroque and the Court of Louis XIV ("The Sun King"). Featured are courty works by Rebel, Le Moine, Marais and the great Couperin. In the notes, theorbo player William Carter describes the differences in the music of this period in France: "What is it about this music that exerts such a particular fascination on musicians and listeners alike? Maybe it is the composer's constant awareness of and delight in the instrumental sonorities and colour. This delight in the subtle distinctions and love of timbre for its own sake is a source of pleasure in French music of our own time as well (Rameau through Berlioz and Debussy to Messian and Boulez). But perhaps it is simply the feeling (which can be rare in other styles of early music) that the composers were actually in love with the instruments for which they wrote. Whatever the reason, it is a pleasure for us to relax into this music which always rewards the performer as well as the listener."

Compared to their other recordings, this one has a notably calm mood and is full of alluring expression from all players. The piece of Le Moine is a beautiful work for solo theorbo while Marais gives two subtle works scored for bass viol and theorbo. Neither are in any hurry to prove anything beyond the sheer enjoyment and wonder of the rich tones the instruments exude. The opening "Les Caracteres de la Danse" is, yes, much about the dances of the Court which were elevated to a supreme place of importance by the King (who was supposedly a fine dancer). Its character is festive but with an intelligent compostional structure.

The Palladian Ensemble is in top form for these works and play them with a tangible sense of enjoyment - which is what the music is all about. Rachel Podger is one of the masters of the Baroque violin whose rich, lyrical, expressive and "sunny" tonality is perfect for this type of music. She is always a joy to hear (her Mozart sonatas might be the exception). But in the Baroque she is radient. The entire ensemble sounds superb and create rich textures and sonorities that - like William Carter notes - is just a pure pleasure to enjoy regardless of the musical intricacies or form. Part of the richness must be credited to the full-bodied and most realistic sound quality (in spite of the not-so-famous Linn label). So, while this music will not win any awards for its genius or revolutional impact, it is a simple treasure to hear every now and then to just enjoy the beauty of the instruments and imagine an era where dance and delight reigned in the Court of "The Sun King."

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, soulful and frolicsome.......2002-11-28

Another thoroughly enjoyable recording by the Palladian Ensemble! The Palladian Ensemble and Chatham Baroque have both released CDs of French music from the reign of Louis the XIV (this one and "Danse Royale" respectively). Although the selections differ, the tone is much the same, and well enough--this is beautiful stuff, and it is nice to be able to compare the interpretations of two such accomplished ensembles. If pressed, I would have to say that while the dual-violin-over-gamba-and-theorbo sound of Chatham Baroque is slightly richer than Palladian's pairing of violin and recorder over the same low instruments, Palladian's work is a bit more playful. Both groups make for utterly splendid listening, however--at once deeply relaxing and cheerfully invigorating. If you have a CD player that will randomly mix and match from multiple discs, buy them both and listen to them together for a double treat. Add a hot bath and a cold drink to the experience, especially when you're trying to de-stress, and I can't imagine you could get much closer to heaven!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Simply delightful.......2001-12-31

It doesn't take a connoiseur of French Baroque music to appreciate the delicate appeal of its style. Direct and lively, it can be enjoyed both as a casual entertainment as well as delved into by the serious student of music. The selection of pieces put together by Charivari Agreable demonstrates this admirably.

From the deep contemplation of Louis Couperin's Pavanne in F-Sharp Minor to the joie-de-vivre of Armand-Louis' La Cheron, there's something to appeal to everyone in this album. My particular favorite is the dramatic B-minor 'Sonate en Quatuor' by Louis-Antoine Dornel, which rivals the intensity and depth of expression of any more well-known composer.

This album also showcases a rarity in the Baroque: the consort of viols. The viol, or viola da gamba, is a six-stringed fretted instrument, related to the guitar and lute but bowed somewhat like the cello. Made in all sizes, it was considered the "Queen of Instruments" through the Renaissance and Baroque, falling into disuse with the Classical era. (The largest size, the violone, survived with considerable modification to become the modern double bass.) If you have seen the movie Tous les Matins du Monde, then you have seen and heard the viol and the music of some of its greatest proponents.

While music for solo bass viol is a mainstay of the French Baroque, it was rarely used in consort after about 1650. Charivari Agreable here has culled some fine examples of its later use, however, and arranged some pieces to suit a quartet of viols -- very true to the nature of Baroque music, which considered the musical line quite separable from the instrument used to realize it. The result is a true gem for anyone, and especially the viol enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars The previous reviewer has some points, ...but..........2006-12-09

I appreciated the input of the previous reviewr, but ther eare a couple of items, not having to do with this particular recording that I have to add an addendum. the 7-string bass viol (or viola da gamba) is NOT an ancestor of the cello, or any instruments in the violin family. Historical evidence, as well as extensive research show the viola da gamba family was connected to the development of the lute and early guitars in Europe 70 years before the fist violin family instruments begin to appear. Please note, I am NOT referring to vielles or any other precursors of bowed string instruments in Europe. A simple web search will yield many other viola da gamba soloists, many of whom are exeptional performers.

The 'Sonnerie' here is lifeless and completely at odds with the meter. The violas are groaning in slow agony as opposed to whirling feverishly and spiraling towards a heaven-like ecstacy. The rest of the pieces are equally pathetic in their execution. Listen to a sample of Savall's performance of this piece on the soundtrack to 'All The Mornings of The World' and the music will simply explain itself for you to make your descisions in buying French Baroque.

Good luck in your search for great music!
