I can't critique it.......2006-09-22

but I can tell you I love it. Brahms--maybe my favorite composer. Van Cliburn--easily my favorite pianist. It doesn't get much better than this in my book. Beautiful music beautifully performed. What more can you ask for?

An extraordinary piano recording........2006-09-01

One really is at first simply stunned by the sound of the piano. These recordings are 30 years old and sound as good or better than a lot of what gets released today.

And then there is the artist himself. I had never taken Cliburn for a Brahmsian. But there are so many wonderful performances on this CD. Take Op. 118 #6 for example. At first hearing, I thought Cliburn was being interpretive. Then I got out my piano edition of Brahms. And it was marked staccato just as Cliburn played it.

More than just being straight with the music, is the beautiful piano tone and lyrical concentration that Van Cliburn brings to his Brahms.

I myself am a HUGE Brahms fan. This recording brings us perhaps some of the most beautiful music ever written for piano.
Van Cliburn's interpretation is simply amazing. He can be as soft and subtle as any, while at the same time can play with vigor and fury. I frequently consult this disk for new ideas or perhaps different views.
The quality of the recording is spectacular - crisp, clear, and beautiful.

A Mixture of Light & Darkness.......2001-02-03

Resting...now moving forward...then curling in on itself like a wave. Lightness...darkness...flowing...falling, then stopping to look down into the depths where it will finally rest, yet defiantly turning upward toward the light again.

I have tried to capture, in a few feeble words, what this music sounds like. One could not find a better musical interpretation of the Greek God Prometheus; who slowly dies from having his liver eaten, while chained to the rocks of the Caucasus Mountains,(Brahms died from a damaged liver as Prometheus did). This music shines forth a penetrating consciousness, only to be consumed by the quiet tranquility of an endless sleep. One hears this in the Capriccio in G Minor as well as many other pieces that begin assertively, but then suddenly grow into a deep yearning for rest.

I can't say enough good things about this CD. If this had been a complete collection of the late piano pieces, I would have to consider this a National Treasure. As I write these words I am listening to the Intermezzo in A, Op. 118 on track 7. What a wonderful way to say goodbye to the piano. What a wonderful way to say goodbye to life itself; since he was to give his life back to the universe from whence it came shortly after these pieces were composed.

When everything has been said and done. When your hopes and dreams of finding the perfect love have been laid to rest, as his must have, time becomes meaningless; and all that you have become and hope to be rests in perfect stillness and repose. This is the feeling one gets when listening to these works. It is so wonderful to see that Van Cliburn, like a true Romantic, understands this and makes no effort to crash around in these pieces in order to create a needless and unnecessary sense of excitement. All of the music here is handled with the utmost sensitivity and delicacy. And as the previous reviewer has stated, the recording quality is very pleasing, Since it was originally recorded in analog and then remastered in digital. The original analog (tape) master gives the music a warmth that is fitting for what I consider some of the most important spiritual statements by a composer that have ever been made on the Piano. I can't listen to this CD without getting a lump in my throat. This music is sure to stir up long forgotten emotions within you to!

Delightful collection.......2001-03-25

A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.

The best for the price or for any price........2006-09-28

This is a generic 2 cd set called 'Chopin'. It contains over 155 minutes of pure bliss with Abbey Simon being the primary pianist (by a longshot).
The price is $5.98 for a mixture of Nocturnes, Waltzes, Preludes, Etudes and other favorite pieces. There is no historical or analytical documentation except for the standard list of contents. The sound is perfect. The emotions seem toward the middle, not too much and not too little. An excellent album for just about anyone who wants to hear Chopin on a shoestring budget.

Album Description

Ray McIntyre has been playing the 216 pieces of Couperin on harpsichord and piano for over fifty years, but in all that time, little effort has been made to render them on the modern piano. In teaching at the Vienna Conservatory for fourteen years and availing himself of Europe's plentiful libraries and archives, Mr. McIntyre offers an unique perspective on 18th century performance practice. He demonstrates that Couperin's Pièces de Clavecin become universal keyboard works when the elements of style, touch, articulation, note inequality, the treatment of silences and ornaments are understood.

Melodious, Charming, Fascinating.......2006-06-24

I know next to nothing about the keyboard music of François Couperin. When I was a kid pianist I ran across some pieces by him, tried them, got my fingers snagged on the ever-present ornaments and never went back to them. Over the years I have heard bits and bobs of his keyboard works but never really put much effort into knowing more about them. When this 2CD collection came my way I was ready, apparently, to learn more. Fortunately, Ray McIntyre, the pianist/harpsichordist here, wrote very informative booklet notes. Indeed, he indicates that one of his purposes with this set was 'to introduce the intermediate student of the piano or of the harpsichord ... to the challenge of learning fundamental techniques of keyboard performance from the works of a poorly understood master who stood at the beginning of our modern era, systemized an aesthetic method, introduced the concept of studying etudes, revolutionized the appearance of engraved folios of music and founded the genre of the composer-pianist ... [but] the general music lover need not absorb the didactic detail presented in these notes in order to revel in the passion and tenderness of these pieces.'

McIntyre arranged these forty-five short pieces, taken from the more than 200 Couperin wrote, in order of increasing difficulty. All of them present technical difficulties if only because of those ornaments I mentioned. But as we traverse the collection it is clear that textures become denser, tempi quicker and the necessity for differentiation of touch more insistent. McIntyre's playing demonstrates how it should be done.

But more important to the casual listener is the impact of the music itself. These are brief pieces -- interestingly no timings are listed -- that charm with their melodies, their almost conversational impact; it is as if each piece is describing a scene. The titles of the individual pieces help with that -- 'The Bees'; 'Cupid's Fatal Arrows'; 'The Little Windmills'; 'The Convalescent'; 'The Carillon at Cythera'; 'The Nightingale in Love,' etc. The final piece, the longest of the collection, called 'Triumph' is in the form ABACADA and depicts preparing for battle, a fanfare, combat, 'joy of the victors.'

Most of the pieces are played on a Blüthner piano whose treble has special tuning: a fourth string for each note in the treble is set to vibrate sympathetically at either 4' or 8' pitch, similar to the tuning of a harpsichord. The result is an exceedingly sweet-toned piano sound that is somewhere between a modern piano and a harpsichord. A couple of pieces are played on piano and then on harpsichord, showing interesting contrast.

McIntyre is a sensitive player. At first I felt his performance suffered from tempo instability until I realized that he was responding to the emotional needs of each piece as well as the necessity of giving the often extraordinarily complex ornaments their due. As I became used to this the music took on a more deeply-felt tone that made listening to them more pleasurable. As McIntyre says in his notes, the complexity of the music itself is not immediately perceived by the casual listener because they are beguiled by the charm of Couperin's melodic skill, and that certainly is true. So, this is music the repays both casual and more attentive listening, one of the hallmarks of greatness.
