The opening track of this extraordinary recording will surprise anyone whose impression of 15th-century religious music is defined by dark monasteries and hooded monks. This "Gloria ad modum tubae" for two countertenors and two sackbuts (early relatives of the trombone)--and the following secular chanson, "Se la face ay pale"--has enough melodic spark and rhythmic oomph to yank even the most jaded 20th-century ears happily back 400 years and leave them anxiously waiting for more. The "more" that follows is a sensitive, careful, and uncommonly expressive performance of the Mass for which Guillaume Dufay is primarily known today. As sung by the all-male ensemble-countertenors, tenors, and baritones-with occasional instrumental accompaniment, the music seems to emerge from an ancient stillness to fill the revered space of some Gothic cathedral. In fact, this is a studio recording made in the early 1970s. Thankfully, and properly, it has remained in the catalog, for it is still the best version of this essential early music masterpiece. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dufay, not all 'songs'. Buy It........2006-07-31

'Chansons' by Guillaume Dufay, performed by the European early music group, Ensemble Unicorn, is a fine sample of early non-liturgical music. One of the most revealing things about it is how much the pieces sound liturgical to the amateur ear. But that should not be too big a surprise, as popular music has often been built on spiritual origins (witness the influences of modern gospel on soul music).

As other reviewers noted, contrary to the sense of the title, only half of these pieces are actually songs, in the modern sense of the French art song or Chanson. But that doesn't make them any less enjoyable. I find the performances comparable to my benchmark for similar early music performances, the Clemencic Consort.

A very nice, inexpensive sampling of great early music.

4 out of 5 stars The Unicorn Ensemble "get medieval" on Dufay.......2006-02-18

The Unicorn Ensemble's collection of Guillaume Dufay's "Chansons" is a fine recording, with excellent performances using period instruments that vividly evoke the spirit of the Middle Ages. My main reservation about "Chansons" is that it might give you the wrong impression about Dufay, one of the most forward-looking composers of the 15th century. The Unicorn Ensemble's instrumental textures are a joy to listen to, but they tend to obscure Dufay's polyphonic innovations. To be sure, Dufay's greatest advances came in the realm of sacred music, with his chansons largely governed by the "formes fixes" that held sway over early Renaissance secular music. But the ingenious Dufay found ways to bend the rigid song structures to his will.

Take 'Se la face ay pale' for example, a through-composed chanson in which Dufay employs voice crossings and close imitation to achieve a sophisticated polyphonic tapestry. The Unicorn Ensemble performs this chanson instrumentally (as they do with about half the songs in this collection). Their interpretation is textured and inspired, but obscures the effect of Dufay's polyphony. Another chanson performed instrumentally is "Resveilliés vous et faites chiere lye," written for the 1423 wedding of Carlo Malatesta and Vittoria Colonna. In its original version, Dufay highlighted the groom's name with a homophonic treatment of the line "Charle, gentil." Without voices, the effect is lost.

The overall effect of "Chansons" is to cast Dufay's music as essentially Medieval; many of these arrangements wouldn't sound out of place on Unicorn Ensemble's "Codex Faenza," featuring music written by composers who lived a century before Dufay. Dufay's secular music is undoubtedly rooted in medieval sensibilities, but his approach to vocal polyphony classes him as early Renaissance. Fans of Medieval instrumental music will treasure "Chansons," and rightly so. But those interested in the music of Dufay should also seek out one of his Masses, such as "Missa L'homme arme" (also on Naxos) or (if you can find it) "Missa Se la face ay pale" (based on the chanson found here). One should hear Dufay's music as vocal polyphony to truly experience the glorious achievements of this early Renaissance master.

5 out of 5 stars Dufay: Chansons ~ Guillaume Dufay.......2005-03-17

Many people have this idea that the middle-ages was a time with little art and refinement. This is not true at all and Dufay shows with his compositions that there was plenty of sharp wits. The music does sound very different from what we now consider to be classical music. However, one should not be fooled by this and the music is very complex in its simplicity. The vocals are not easy at all to sing right and each instrument plays an integral part in his many and varied compositions. The lyrics are very well written and one can not accuse him of being less then civilized and are filled with emotions that were just as valid then as they are now.

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2000-12-28

This lovely CD contains 9 instrumental pieces and 8 sung pieces, almost evenly alternating. That balance and variety seems to me one of the best features of the disc. The liner notes are good and I enjoyed reading the brief biographies of the members of Ensemble Unicorn. For the chansons I was pleased to be given both the original French text and an accompanying English translation. The recording was done in Evangelische Kirche A.B., Vienna, and the acoustics there complement Dufay's compositions very well. If all that you know of Dufay are his masses, then this CD is an excellent next addition. But even if you are not familiar with Dufay, you will enjoy this broadly appealing disc.

Unlike some "greatest-hits" samplers, this well-chosen selection can serve a purpose for even some fairly advanced music lovers who still don't know this period well. Annotator David Fallows ties things together with perceptive commentary, and the performances chosen (most of them from stylistically enlightened recordings) are all quite fine. The uncredited programmer hasn't hesitated to emphasize great names (Dufay and Josquin Des Prez) or to include stylistically weird material (Solage's incredibly dissonant Fumeux fume). Only a few minutes after Solage, we get the gorgeous euphony of Tallis' Spem in alium! It's a pity that no texts are included, or that there isn't any bouncy dance music, but this is still a fine single-disc introduction to the period. The timing is about as long as possible. --Leslie Gerber

4 out of 5 stars A good starting point for anyone interested in music of the 15th and 16th centuries.......2007-05-15

"The Renaissance In Music" is aptly named. It's not intended as a "best of," but rather an examination of major composers, trends, and genres that marked the Renaissance, here characterized as an era (1400 to 1600) in which vocal counterpoint reached new heights in elegance and sophistication. The cover picture of sunlight shining into a dark room is an evocative metaphor for the Renaissance itself, and for the CD's own effort to shine some light on long-darkened corners of music history.

The compilation establishes a strong focus on the 15th century by beginning with the works of Guillaume Dufay (1397-1474). Dufay excelled in both sacred and secular vocal compositions, as illustrated here by three Mass movements and the lovely chanson "Se la face ay pale."

Pioneer of pervasive imitation Josquin Desprez (c. 1450-1521) is well represented with 20 minutes of music, the highlight being a stirring rendition of the virtuoso motet "Miserere mei, Deus" (not to be confused with the early 17th century Allegri work).

Selections from the High Renaissance dispense with the usual suspects; notable omissions include Byrd, Lassus, Willaert & Palestrina. We hear a madrigal by Verdelot, a Marian antiphon by Gombert, and perhaps best of all, Thomas Tallis' magnificent 40-voice motet "Spem in alium."

Instrumental pieces get rather short shrift, with only "Agincourt Carol" and a fantasia by Mudarra (c. 1510-1585) providing contrast to the stream of polyphony that dominates the CD.

Some selections may induce head-scratching; for example, Solage's "Fumeux et fume." This bizarre, chromatic work represented the late Medieval "ars subtilior" style, an experimental movement that faded before the Renaissance began in earnest. A better selection from the transitional period from late Medieval to early Renaissance is Perugia's "Helas Avril," a three-part virelai which foreshadows Dufay's polyphony.

Prominent Dufay scholar David Fallows provides insightful liner notes. The performances (which prominently feature the Huelgas Ensemble under the direction of Paul Van Nevel) are selected from a wide time frame (1965 to 1996), but fine mastering and clever sequencing makes the compilation flow nicely.

"The Renaissance in Music," despite some notable omissions and curious inclusions, serves as a good starting point for anyone interested in music of the 15th and 16th centuries. The compilation's tantalizing selection should whet one's appetite for more music of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance in Peace.......2000-08-06

I enjoyed this album of music from the Renaissance. Overall, it is a peaceful and comforting set of music. I found it something to listen to while I was reading or studying. This collection is diverse. It features works for voice both accompanied and cappela arrangements. There are also instrumental works for organ, as well as for lute. The liner notes are clear and informative. From them, I learned that Renassaince Music obtains its distinctive sound from gently flowing melodies, unpredictable phrase structures and an indirect approach to a tonal centre. These attributes made the music strange and yet captivating to me. If you are interested in music of the Renassaince Period or simply enjoy peaceful music performed well, this album will be interesting to you.

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish and Unauthentic.......2007-04-19

There is a case to be made for instrumental accompaniment of polyphonic masses, though many musicologists are hostile to it, but there is no musical or historical justification for the kind of mixed consort used on this CD. The viol da gamba, for instance, hadn't even been invented in the lifetime of Dufay. Aside from such purisms, however, this is an out-of-date amateurish version of Dufay -- "early" Early Music, around 1974. It should be retired. If you want to hear where the art has arrived in the meantime, choose any disk by The Orlando Consort, Ensemble Organum, Ensemble Officium, The Clerks' Group, Capella Alamire, Ensemble Clement Janequin. There are NO well-done CDs of Dufay era masses with instruments; I say this with utmost sadness, since I am an instrumentalist.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Dufay recordings.......2006-03-04

15th Century composer Guillaume Dufay (c. 1397-1474) was a crucial figure in forging the polyphonic techniques that would become the foundation of Renaissance music. He's one of my favorite composers of all-time - and this is my favorite recording of Dufay. While it's out of print, the university where I work and study music has this CD at its library. I was fortunate enough to experience this recording while taking a "Music of the Renaissance" course. The otherworldly beauty of the Capella Cordina's voices instantly captivated me.

"Missa Se la Face Ay Pale," an Ordinary Mass Cycle (Gloria, Kyrie, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) from approximately 1450, dominates Disc One. Dufay suffuses these Mass movements with recurring, identifiable motifs, achieving compositional unity and establishing the standards to which composers of 15th century sacred music aspired. Somewhat controversially, Dufay based the Mass on his own chanson `Se la face ay pale;' previously, Mass movements had been based on Church-approved plainchants. The chanson also appears here, as do three others ("Vergene Bella," "Las, Que Feray," and "Ma Belle Dame Souveraine").

"The Mass for St. James the Greater," which takes up most of disc 2, is an early Dufay plenary Mass (c. 1427), which includes not only the movements of the Mass Ordinary but also the Proper movements (Introit, Alleluia, Offertory and Communio). Scholars have identified the Communio as the first documented use of "fauxbourdon" - a quasi-improvisatory technique that employed parallel first inversion chords, thereby emulating the "sweet sound" developed by early 15th century English composers. The Mass doesn't rival the joyful beauty of "Missa Se la Face Ay Pale," but instead captures Dufay in a formative, developmental phase. Two associated motets follow this Mass: "Rite Maiorem" and "Ecclesiae Militantis."

Alejandro Planchart, a premier Dufay scholar, expertly conducts the Capella Cordina in this 1974 performance. The combination of male and female voices with period instruments (such as viol, recorder, and sackbut) achieves a rich, visceral quality often lacking in modern performances of Renaissance Music. The tasteful instrumental accompaniment provides texture without overwhelming the vocals.

Lyrichord Discs would do well to consider reissuing this CD; it's the Holy Grail of Dufay recordings.

I had been trying to find a used copy of this out of print CD for over 8 months. I was excited when one became available after relentlessly checking with Amazon. I had actually ordered this 2 cd set twice from two different sellers who advertised having a copy and then both sent me emails stating that I had been refunded because they did not actually have it.

I was looking forward to hearing two masses of Dufay with instruments to add to my collection of recordings by Cantica Symphonia (Missae and Fragmenta Missarum, both really wonderful experiences; and the recording of Dufay's isorhythmic motets by the Huelgas Ensemble, a mystical and beautiful encounter).

I have been usually pleased with other Lyrichord recordings, but the singing on this 2 cd set is downright hard to listen to. It reminds me of a similarly unpleasant listen to a Seon recording of Josquin's Missa La Sol Fa Re Mi. You can read my equally disappointed review of that recording as well. What both of these recordings have in common are two aspects: (1) a lack of balance and integration of the instrumental music and the choir, so the overall effect is that of a blurry halo of sound, and (2) the choir sounds like it is singing too fast and seems to consist predominantly of wobbly elderly sopranos and altos who are singing more in a wavering vocal style more appropriate to opera and comes off in the end sounding nothing like a renaissance work at all.

If you want to enjoy outstanding recordings of Dufay's glorious masses with instrumental accompaniments, then I highly recommend seeking used copies of the recordings I listed above by Cantica Symphonia (on the Stradivarius Dulcimer label) and the isorhythmic motets (CD entitled "O Gemma Lux") performed incredibly by the Huelgas Ensemble on the Harmonia Mundi label.

4 out of 5 stars A great library builder, just a bit dull.......2006-08-06

'Complete Secular Music' by Guillaume Dufay is a great work to have if you are building a library of classical music. But, speaking for the amateur listener who happens to like old music, working your way through the five CDs makes you wish you had gotten the 'greatest hits' compilation. It turns out Dufay's liturgical music is much more interesting to my ears. This collection is basicly about 100 songs in French, which have little of the charm of more recent French chansoms or even a comparable selection of Shubert songs. I'm really happy to have this boxed set, but I will probably not listen to it very often.

3 out of 5 stars Good but a bit outdated.......2000-07-08

I hate to be a spoilsport on the outstanding ratings of this set. It is certainly an invaluable collection of the secular songs, and as a musicologist interested in this repertory I'd hate to be without it. But some poor performance practices--for example, the failure to recognize that the introductory melismas are actually equipped with the opening vowel (and are hence vocal)--leads to bizarre consequences. One consequence is that there are introductory "instrumental" passages and "instrumental interludes" that make nonsense of the musical continuity in some pieces: continuous vocal performance is required. Dufay surely did not intend the strange alternation of instrumental and vocal passages heard in this recording, I think. The whole set needs to be redone in recognition of more recent performance research.

5 out of 5 stars Consistently the best Dufay recording ever.......2000-02-11

To add to the splendid comments by the first reviewer -- this is quite possibly the best, most faithful/authentic/scholarly Dufay ever recorded. It's worth every penny (and at 30 bucks this is beyond a bargain for 96 chansons!) just to hear such masterpieces as: (10 on disc 1) 'Mon cuer me fait tous dis penser' -- possibly the most gorgeous chanson of the 15th century. Plus, to hear the whole corpus of secular music presented in one huge macro-performance is extremely instructive in crystalizing one's impression of Dufay's genius. His style strikes even (especially?) the modern listener as amazingly fresh and relevant -- the liner notes and complete texts are quite an oeuvre by themselves... a lovely anthology of period formes-fixes poetry! (And, I might add -- I find all the performers, including Timothy Penrose both masterly and scholarly in their interpretations.) This is a must buy for fans of Early Music and a worthy introduction to 15th century music for those who are unfamiliar with the period but wish to invest in a guaranteed winner. You won't be disappointed! Buy now!

            5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......1999-12-20

Grab this while it lasts! This is a reissue of a 1980 recording that will remain forever unsurpassed - both because its quality is so great, and also because no one in this day and age will dare to undertake such a massive project again. Think about it - the entire Dufay secular output! Listening to these songs, written more than 500 years ago, reveals how little has changed in the intervening centuries. Many styles and genres came and went, but the human impulse to express emotion in a song remained the same. This is why these old songs remain so appealing today. Dufay, who was possibly the greatest composer of his time, wrote most of his secular music in the fixed medieval forms (such as rondeau, virelais and ballade), but his songs transcend the formalities because he was such a remarkable melodist. Listen to such masterpieces as Vergene Bella or Donnes L'Assault a la Fortresse to know what I mean. The informative sleeve notes explain the characteristics of each style. The recording took into consideration the latest available musicological research into Dufay and his times. To cover the entire ground, some compositions are presented here in several different versions. Vocal and instrumental pieces alternate to provide variety (as the notes inform, the pieces with incomplete texts were not vocalized). The instruments (a typical medieval array) consist of recorders, flutes, dulcians, shawns, trumpets, rebecs and fiddles; plus lute, harp and clavichord used for continuo. The singers are excellent. The recording features half of the Hilliard (in its then-existing roster): Rogers Covey-Crump, Paul Elliott, Paul Hillier & Michael George. Tenor John Elwes contributes some fine singing (particularly in the spectacular Vergene Bella, sung solo to a fiddle and rebec). The only person who is perhaps not up to the highest standards is countertenor Timothy Penrose, although his singing is definitely adequate. On balance, a very satisfying release.
