Exemplary recording.......2003-04-24

When listening to this recording, one can see why St. Louis was so disappointed to lose Slatkin to D.C. This recording of Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" and his "Sinfonia da Requiem" is excellent in every way. Except for Britten's own recordings of these two works, I rate this as the best recordings of these works. The clarity of expression and the precision the ensemble exhibits are beyond reproach. Buy this recording.

Another gem from Slatkin.......2001-06-05

Slatkin has become one of my favorite conductors, and this CD adds to that confirmation. Both the Young Person's Guide and the Peter Grimes Interludes are marvelous, with lots of passion and powerful playing by the London Philharmonic.

close but cigarless.......2005-01-02

Something's missing from this CD, and I'm not sure what. Nothing wrong with the sound -- it's fine if not the last word in immediacy and presence. Somehow Pesek fails to deliver the punch in the viscerals this music should give you. In places he succeeds (the opening of the Sea Interludes, and spots therein). Here and there he is impressive, particularly in his tempos (all appropriate). But there are too many times when the orchestra -- and the conductor's involvement -- seem a bit remote, distracted. The Purcell variations simply don't overwhelm as they should -- and here the lack of presence in the sound may be a factor. All in all, much to enjoy here, and most folks will not be disappointed. Still......not definitive. Vaguely missing something....
