Musical jewels are waiting for you!.......2007-05-12
It results absolutely understandable how Nielsen's chamber genre, doesn't enjoy of major knowledge and esteem by part of the great audiences.
The set of Wind Quintets shows us a composer in absolute plenitude of overwhelming inspiration, owner of a domain of the thematic material apart of a remarkable creative vein.
If you love and admire to Nielsen the creator of notable orchestral compositions, you should take into account around this reduced genre of wind pieces, due they contain an important feature of that vertiginous musician. .
For wind lovers..........2007-01-10

Andsnes brings fine piano music out of undeserved neglect.......2003-12-22
The Chaconne was written in 1916, directly after the Fourth Symphony, and continues the mood of that work. Inspired by Bach's famous violin chaconne, it starts with a blocky, rather conventionally unpianistic theme in the left hand before basing a series of twenty variations upon that theme. It is contrapuntally dense, increasingly so as the work goes on, until the texture clears in the closing pages. This is definitely not sensual music, but it is dramatic and expressive nonetheless--the composer and scholar Robert Simpson feels that late Beethoven is the model for the work, and I can see his point.
Probably the finest of Nielsen's piano works is the six-movement Suite, written at the end of the 1910s, as the composer was starting work on the dramatic Fifth Symphony. The first movement is cold and icy, the second more delicate, but the heart of the work is in the third and sixth movements. The third is a slow movement of sustained intensity, before the tension relaxes in two lighter movements. The finale is an explosion of energy unparalleled in the rest of the work, torrents of notes and dramatic writing surging all the way to the end.
The Three Piano Pieces were written in 1928 and are one of the composer's last works. They're also one of his most radical works, coming close to atonality at times. The first piece is all watery shimmering colours; the second a dramatic slow movement and the finale--as with the Suite--is an explosive, dramatic burst of energy.
The other two works are early and less interesting. The Five Piano Pieces and Humoresque-Bagatelles are comparatively conventional, though some of the harmonies hint at the composer Nielsen was to become. It is perhaps a pity they had not been dropped in favour of the Theme and Variations, the one major Nielsen piano work not included here. Nonetheless, this is a disc eminently recommendable to Nielsen fans as Andsnes' performances are generally excellent, even if I sense a slight tendency towards rushing in the Chaconne.
