Enjoyable listening..........2007-03-18

...but not so enjoyable as a marvellous live performance, a recording of which I once saw. It featured the George Shearing Trio and Angel Romero, of the famous guitar family. I have an old cassette recording of it. Perhaps it's the extra frisson of a live performance (and the delightful touch of Shearing's trio dressed in black tie and Romero in the jazzman's polo neck!). Don't get me wrong, this is enjoyable, tuneful music, but to my ears it doesn't quite measure up to its predecessor.

An exciting piece of work.......2005-08-30

This is an unbelievable contribution to the polytheon of excellent music. Bolling has merged the two great worlds of classical music and jazz to make for one of the most exciting musical experiences I've ever heard. The first movement alternates between a very Spanish 5/4 dance feel and a laid back jazz/blues feel. The invention movement brings Bach to mind immediately, but the jazz rhythm section behind LaGoya's very traditional melody makes for a completely different feel. The Rhapsodic movement is enchanting and brings Gershin to mind immediately. Bolling not only writes great music in this Concerto, but also uses the music in order to pastiche the great composers in a jazz idiom. He answers the question: What if Bach was a jazz cat? It's an exciting piece with a lot of dimension, a lot of elasticity and a lot of fun. It's well excecuted. LaGoya's guitar work is excellent and Bolling is a monster at the keyboard. This album is a must have. You will probably never hear something quite like Bolling's work. I love this album. Take advantage of this great music, you won't regret it.

Marvellous Bolling.......2005-07-19

The first recording of this piece I had was a tape featuring George Shearing on piano and Claude Bolling on classical guitar. The tape is not in good condition having been played over and over so I was thrilled to purchase this CD - it is absolutely marvellous.

Another Triump for Bolling.......2004-09-09

Alexandre Lagoya and Claude Bolling have combined to produce yet another winner in the long line of Jazz "Suites". Perhaps future musicians will associate the Jazz Suite with Bolling much as we associate the Nocture with Chopin or the Tango with Piazzolla. I was apprehensive over the effect that a guitar could bring to the world of jazz. One usually associates the wind or wood or brass instruments with that genre and I have to admit that the CD has a more "classical" ring to it than the other suites.

That is not a criticism by any means. In a way, this is some of the most inventive music Bolling ever penned. Many of these are idiomatically "guitarish". AFRICAINE touches on several themes - jazz, blues, tango, classical whereas INVENTION sought after Bach (was the name a pun?) This is a more private album, one that benefits from a solitary rather than public listening, perhaps due to the detailed playing that is difficult to grasp in the public social setting.

Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

Bolling's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-13

If you haven't heard Claude Bolling's music, this is the CD you want to buy first. Not only does it have the best tunes of all his CDs each tune shows which CD it came from.

I love playing a Bolling tune and asking a friend is this Classical or Jazz? They'll always say it sounds like Classical and then it shifts to Jazz. Everyone that has heard his CDs goes out and buys it.

Get this cd if you want to hear Bolling's works for flute before deciding if you would like to perform them. A great cd overall, maybe another brave flutist would like to redo these works? Although the late Jean-Pierre Rampal was known for doing 'the Picnic Suite' and 'Suite For Flute and Piano' I would like to add another artist to my collection.

Amazing Collection of Artist's & Bolling Compositions.......2001-05-01

Seems as here exhibited that the best of classical and jazz do have an area of union. Bolling combined the two by writing his suite for Flue and Jazz Piano, as well as these others for the specific performers.

How about writing a piece just for Jean-Pierre Rampal and Yo-Yo Ma?

Favorites include Baroque and Blue, Baroque in Rhythm and Rag-Polka.

This is music of a different sort, but most enjoyable. Bravo, Claude!

Great Price, Great CD........2000-10-06

This is a collection of some great Claude Bolling pieces, including one of my favorites on track 4. If Bolling's style appeals to you, or if you are just looking for some good clever jazz, go for this. It's quite different, and it's good.

More superb work from Claude Bolling.......2002-10-07

Claude Bolling's "Concerto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Piano" is a humdinger of an album. Deftly combining--as he so often does--the structure of classical music with the freewheeling joy of jazz, this is a superb album filled with music that richly rewards repeated listens.

The album opens with "Hispanic Dance," which sounds almost like a companion piece to Dave Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo a la Turk." The guitar (played by Angel Romero) and piano (played by Bolling) sinuously intertwine, then part, then come back together again for a propulsive piece that positively sets your tango heels to tapping. "Mexicaine," the next piece, is filled with foreboding, regret, and what sounds like lost love. Romero's guitar-playing is sensitive and filled with emotion here--it's an almost distractingly emotive song. "Invention" has all the flavor of a J. S. Bach invention for clavichord--there is beautifully classic structure here, with tendrils of beautiful sound winding in and out of the architecture of the composition. "Africaine" puts a mellow spin on the guitar, with the piano urging along the music with staccato, urgent chord progressions. On "Finale"--aptly the final song on the album--Romero's guitar creates a sense of musical tension that's incredibly strong and lends a marvelous sense of release to the song when the other instruments finally join in after a couple of minutes. Overall, another fine, fine album from the genius of Claude Bolling!

I am a huge Angel Romero fan(as well as Pepe and the rest), and this cd is nothing short of great. The unlikely combination of jazz piano and classical guitar works so well. The different style of songs on this cd creates a variety of atmospheres from beginning to end. Very easy to listen to with an incredible amount of musical talent on 1 cd...highly recommended..

Outstanding........1999-10-28

I've been a long-time collector of Bolling's works, and although he's a great jazz pianist, the combination of Brown, Manne, and the incomparable Shearing make this rendition unsurpassable. Plus Romero is among the world's greatest with the guitar. Outstanding all around.
