Bang for your buck.......2007-05-23

Lots of good music on this compilation. Originally bought it with just one piece in mind and ended up discovering numerous tracks that I enjoy as well. The music quality is well-above average and for less than $10, you can't beat it.

Nicely thought out program..........2007-02-09

This one disc contains many of the most beloved orchestral excerpts from opera(Sorry, no Wagner). They are competently played by a variety of NAXOS's usual roster of artists and orchestras. As I have stated before!
The NAXOS producers seem to include not so typical repetoire on most of their compilations. The lush interlude from Schmidts "Notre Dame" is a gem. Strauss's little known "1001 Nights" gives us a Viennese twist on the Arabian fantasy. The gushing brass of the introduction to Stenhamar's interlude to the "Song" leaves us wanting for more. Sure, you don't get Karajan or Bernstein like performances, but the disc as a whole is worth the budget price asked. Recording quality varies from track to track, good to excellent.

A Great Intro to Some of Opera's Orchestral Moments.......2003-12-20

Some of opera's (or related stage works') best orchestral moments are included on this CD. Starting with the joyous Prelude to Carmen and ending with the tour de force of the Dance of the Hours, this CD has it covered, at least as well as any near eighty minute CD can. If you are not familiar with classical music, this is a great opener. None of the tracks are "hard" to listen to- they just gracefully take you off to another world. For beginners make sure you listen to the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffman, Dance of the Hours from La Giocanda [I promise you, you will know it], and Meditation from Thais [no matter how supposedly "overplayed" it is, it is still one of the most beautiful songs], and Prelude to Carmen. For beginners and seasoned music aficionados [which I do not pretend to be], I beg you to listen to Interlude from Notre Dame by Schmidt. This is one of the most surprising songs on the entire CD. Very nice and every bit as enjoyable as the most popular ones. This piece is not often found on other CDs; thank goodness Naxos included it. For those with massive CD collections the few dollars you spend on this CD is worth Interlude from Notre Dame, and for the beginner, you will not find a better group of famous and not-so-famous songs.

Fantastic.......2006-06-30

First of all anything with Sir Solti's name on is worth purchasing. Solti has such a way with interpreting music! If you like overtures this CD is for you. It has the best overtures here in one collection. With orchestras like chicago, london, and the vienna you cannot argue with the performances. There are a few "weaker" ensembles, but when compared with the other ensembles there are few that will not sound weak. Again any work Solti has done is worth purchasing!

Famous Overtures.......2005-08-16

Did not like the way these musical pieces were "interpretted".
Did not like the tempo and in one piece one of the instruments played a portion which I would say they played a flat instead of a natural note. This is based on hearing the same pieces played by someone else, it's just my opinion.

Spectacular.......2003-09-25

Not only does it include some of the most famous overtures, but they are played in such an exciting style, full of life and passion. The Suppe overtures are superior and the Wagner overtures are wonderful as well. There is not a bad point to this recording - highly recommended!

Excellent.......2002-06-11

This is an excellent collection of overtures, especially of Von Suppe's overtures. Solti truly brings out life in these pieces.

The best Overture Album !.......2000-02-28

If you like overtures, here is the album. Never have these been performed so musically and with such excitement. The orchestras involved vary in their abilities, yet the Chicago, Vienna, and London Symphony perfom with style. Solti loves this music and it shows.

Mom picked this up randomly somewhere and it's been in the car ever since. I was just listening again today and it's absolutely fantastic. (I adore the Aida overture with the trumpets!). I'm not a huge fan of opera, so for me this is fantastic. I love the music, but am not into the vocals. This is all the instrumental cream!!! And you can't beat this price.

Surprise, brilliant and fiery Rossini from the young Abbado.......2006-07-12

When Claudio Abbado headed the LSO in the Seventies he was at his most spontaneous and energetic. Listening to this highly charged Rossini overture CD, you'd never suspect that this fiery conductor would turn into the rather careful Rossinian of later years. There are other outstanding Rossini overture records that are warm and classic (Giulini), coolly virtuosic (Reiner and Szell), driven and intense (Toscanini), and excitingly extroverted (Bernstein), but they all sound rame and controlled compared to this CD.

The LSO plays with exceptional vivacity, and the recording from RCA, being bright and forward, adds to the thrills. I'm so glad that all these works aren't played in the jokey, light Rossini style of the Barber of Seville. Semiramide, for example, is a tragedy, and Abbado interprets the overture with more drama and weight than usual. In the Turco in Italia Over. we get a stunning horn obbligato from Barry Tuckwell that's worth the whole price of admisison. The Barber of Seville is full of carefree good humor, William Tell is totally devoid of mannerisms, played as if we haven't all heard it a thousand times--the storm section is a knockout from the LSO brass section, as is the finale mad gallop.

The three Verdi preludes and overtures that fill out this mid-price CD are also very fine, but the real show is Rossini. What a shame that this eye-opening, heart-stopping recording seems to be overlooked here at Amazon.

Great compilation but the title's a misnomer........2006-07-14

I agree that this--and Essential Opera 2--is a very good collection for opera lovers and opera beginners alike, but am afraid I can't agree that this is "essential" opera. Where is Maria Callas in the line-up? Absent Maria, any opera collection that deems itself "essential" deludes itself. Callas is as indispensable to opera as, say, Picasso is to cubism.

The misnomer is made the more stark and jarring when one sees that a contemporaneous rival, Renata Tebaldi, is given two tracks to sing and the Divina Absoluta, none. Tebaldi was Callas' rival like Clementi was Mozart's--whoever remembers the rivals now? History has judged well who the masters are. So I listen to arias in this CD--arias that Callas have incomparably performed like Tosca's Vissi d'Arte, La Wallys's Ebben Ne'andro Lontana"--to disappointment.

I'd give this disc five stars if not for Callas' omission, a fatal mistake for an opera collection that aspires to be "essential."

A great introduction to opera!.......1998-12-19

This CD is full of the most accessible works from the world of opera by some of the greatest performers. Several of the selections have been used in popular media(commercials, movies etc.)so they may be familiar. The liner notes give full details of the operas from which the pieces are selected. I find this an excellent gift for my opera-phobic friends and for children. The performances are top notch and the arrangement of pieces on the CD is well thought out.

Another Gem from Sony Essential Classics.......2003-07-07

As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of Leonard Bernstein, George Szell, Isaac Stern, Robert Casadesus, and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get two great conductors in Eugene Ormandy and Thomas Schippers (the latter would certainly more of a household name had he not died young) performing Overtures and Incidental Music from various operas. With only two orchestras and conductors performing the majority of works in this collection, SEC's Opera Overtures disc has a much more consistent feel overall than its Rossini Overtures set (see my review). Of course at the end of this CD two other conductors make an appearance -- Zubin Mehta on Reznicek's "Donna Diana" Overture and Antonio De Almeida (who is not listed above) on Thomas' "Mignon" Overture. In all, this is an outstanding collection, worth getting for the rarely heard artistry of Schippers alone.

Interesting Overtures.......2006-02-01

This RCA Victor compilation is indeed quite interesting. While it includes some familiar recordings that had been included on various RCA LPs, including the Victrola series in the late 1960s, there are a few recordings that had previously only been available on the original 78-rpm issues. Generally, the performances are all top-notch.

Anyone who has listened to recordings of Toscanini's rehearsals (let alone witnessed them) can attest to how hard he worked even on shorter workers. A particularly good example is Naxos' release of the rehearsal of Debussy's rarely heard "Scottish March" from 1940; Toscanini spent a great deal of time on refining the NBC Symphony's performance, possibly because the work was less familiar to the musicians. Relatively few people have ever heard that remarkable, delightful work; however, it is treated with great precision in Toscanini's hands.

Conductor Charles Gerhardt, who was present at many Toscanini performances and recording sessions, cited the Maestro's performance of the overture to Herold's "Zampa." This is a frequently performed work, even if the opera itself is largely neglected. Toscanini managed to bring out the most exciting, lively, and brilliant playing from the NBC musicians in this 1952 "studio" recording from Carnegie Hall. It is a good example of how Toscanini strived for the best in ALL of the music he conducted.

The overture to Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel," also taken from a 1952 recording session in Carngie Hall, is another treasure. This music, too, is quite familiar and is given a fresh approach in Toscanini's hands. He truly brings out the Wagnerian influences in the music so that the spectacular use of brass is magnificent. The softer, tender passages, including the famous prayer, are handled with great sensitivity.

The first time I heard Toscanini's recording of Dmitri Kabalevsky's overture to his opera "Colas Breugnon," I was absolutely amazed. This is very challenging music; it requires great precision and energy from the musicians and, fortunately, Toscanini succeeded remarkably. The music is extremely syncopated, too. This piece was frequently played on his 1950 American tour with the NBC Symphony and was undoubtedly a delight for all who heard it.

The broadcast concert performance of the overture to Mozart's final opera, "The Magic Flute," is especially wonderful. It is a good demonstration of Toscanini's great love for the music of Mozart. There is an energy and enthusiasm that one rarely hears in this very familiar music. It is one of the better-sounding recordings taken from a broadcast in Studio 8-H.

Toscanini's 1953 recording of the famed overture to Rossini's "William Tell" became the gold standard for all conductors and orchestras who played it. Certainly Toscanini recognized that many associated the finale with "The Lone Ranger" on radio and television. (One reads of Toscanini's delight in sitting close to his television set and marveling at the early programs he watched with family and friends. He would shout "look!" whenever something caught his attention.) However, RCA included his 1939 Studio 8-H broadcast on this disc; as with many of his earlier recordings, this one truly excels with the precise, exciting playing of the storm and the chase music, while the introduction and the calm after the storm are again played with incredible sensitivity.

Smetana's "The Bartered Bride" is best known for its overture and dances. Toscanini's performance is particularly showy and delightful. There is a relentless energy in this performance.

The recording of Thomas' overture to "Mignon" originally appeared on a single 12-inch 78-rpm disc. It was recorded in Carnegie Hall, since producer Charles O'Connell felt it was a better venue for commercial recordings than Studio 8-H. The overture is a medley of familiar tunes from the opera, including the particularly difficult soprano solo. The NBC strings especially excel in this recording.

There are several recordings of the overture to Verdi's "La Forza Del Destino," including the OWI film that Toscanini made with the NBC Symphony in Studio 8-H in 1943 (one of the rare opportunities to SEE Toscanini conducting). This version, which was originally issued on a 78-rpm disc, is one of the best. There is more energy and excitement than in the later recording that was first issued on LPs.

Finally, there is a vibrant performance of the overture to "Der Freischutz." Although the sound is not up to the more familiar 1952 recording, this is certainly a very fine rendition. It is yet another chance to hear the NBC strings at their best. One person who had attended NBC broadcast concerts said that Toscanini, who had been a cellist, was especially good in building a strong string section and this is quite true. The wind section also excels in this recording.

An Amazing Collection of Unique Overture Performances!.......1998-11-17

Only Toscanini at his most intense could inspire an orchestra to such an outpouring of passion as can be heard here in evergreens like the "William Tell" overture, the Verdi "Forza del Destino" overture, and Herold's "Zampa".

Many of the recordings were re-done by Maestro in the early fifties: here the forties' 78s are included, though the earliest (William Tell, 1939) still sounds quite fine in the decent monaural transfers.

These would not all be my favorites of the versions conducted by Maestro that have appeared on LP and CD: the "Mignon" of Thomas makes a greater impact in the high-fidelity recording of 1952, as does the "Freischuetz" Overture. The Kabalevsky "Colas Breugnon" Overture, recorded here on a 78 rpm disk in 1946, does not have the passion, panache, and lively spirit of a broadcast of that same year, available on Dell'Arte. And I take issue with the inclusion of a rather scrappy, poorly played, and scratchy transcription disk from 1946 of the Smetana "Bartered Bride" Overture; an earlier NBC concert performance from 1939 (about to be issued by Naxos but not in the U. S.) has better sound and cleaner playing. One wonders why the Maestro approved this later and inferior performance.

However, the spectacular recording of the 1952 "Zampa" has never sounded better! It is nearly the equal of any recording made that year, by any record company! So much for the canard that "Toscanini records always sounded bad!" Nothing could be further from the truth!
