This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

This was my first CD of music produced by Albinoni, and I was quite pleased. I first discovered Albinoni while listening to my local classical station. After hearing a fantastic Baroque piece, I jotted down the name of the composer and looked him up later. Albinoni's music is wonderful, especially if you are a fan of the classic Baroque style (as I am). This CD contains a superb collection of oboe concerti which rival any oboe pieces I have ever heard. Wonderful in your car, at the office, or just relaxing at home with a good book. Very nice collection!

Albinoni: Oboe Concerti, Vol. 2 ~ Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni.......2005-03-18

Albinoni was a contemporary of the better known JS Bach and in my opinion he is not as good as Bach but compared to modern composers he is quite accomplished. The oboe is a very sensual instrument and when one hears this it can easily lead to various states of emotionality. Albinoni does this quite well and the Naxos recording does this masterfull composer justice with a quite accomplished recording. Anthony Camden is a very skilled oboist and he brings the music to life and is an interesting read from what I read in the well-written booklet that comes with the music. This is a recording that I highly recommend and it is truly a pleasure to listen and experince should a fine recording.

Those who want to hear what other composers were doing during Bach and Handel's time should snap up some of the many CDs featuring the works of Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni in the Naxos catalogue. His oboe concerti are collected on three Naxos CDs. The works are charming, mellifluous and engaging. They are also amongst the first extended series of concerti written for oboe soloist with orchestra.

Everything is recommendable in Volume 2 of the Naxos series: oboist Anthony Camden and the London Virtuosi provide polished, neat performances, the sound is natural, and the liner notes by Michael Talbot are fully informative.

A real masterpiece of composition and playing .......2005-08-27

You wonder how such a wonderful piece as the Nonet could have been forgotten and it is hard to believe that this work only exists in manuscript form. And a first class performance too especially from Tanski. It is sometimes hard to imagine that you are only listening to 9 instruments with the resonance and gusto of the performance. It is filled with the most delightful melodies, virtuosic passages and worthy of any music collection. Hopfully we will hear more of this most underrated composer.

Vienna-School composer finally gets his due.......2003-01-11

Carl Czerny was pupil to Beethoven, and teacher to Liszt. He's best known for his progressive finger exercises, the bane of every piano student for the past century and a half.

Czerny's chamber music is fiendishly difficult and seldom performed. But as this recording proves, it's frequently rich and rewarding. If you enjoy Beethoven, Schubert, and other composers of the Vienna School, this CD is simply a must-have.

Mozart really liked the number 5. Aside from the group of six string quartets dedicated to Haydn, just about all of his greatest chamber works are quintets, and some of them are very unusual too. This particular set contains three magnificent late string quintets, the ever popular Clarinet Quintet, and weirdly wonderful Adagio and Rondo for Glass Harmonica, Flute, Oboe, Viola and Cello. A glass harmonica, by the way, is a set of water-filled glasses that you set spinning and play with moistened fingertips. It was invented (or at least perfected) by Benjamin Franklin, and was wildly popular in Mozart's day, particularly among amateur female performers. Gramophone "Top 100 Recording".......2005-03-27

In addition to the masterpiece G-minor Quintet (K.516), this second volume contains several other significant works. Most notably is the masterpiece Clarinet Quintet (K.581), a highly-angular Adagio/Fugue in rare key of C-minor, Mozart's last chamber composition (string quintet K.614) and a unique, late work for the unusual "glass harmonica". The two pieces for glass harmonica (basically, an invention of rotating glass bowls that ping when struck) are gentle, etherial compositions that Mozart wrote just before his death for a blind virtuoso of this unusual instrument (hence the late Kochel number K. 617). They are quite unique compositions in all of classical music. Equally dreamy in tone is the much-loved Clarinet Quintet (K581) with Brymer that is much better than many other versions I have heard. (But, there are several beautiful recordings of this work). Hearing its radient, soaring autumnal textures, one is not surprised to learn that Mozart absolutely adored the clarinet and writing to its wide and expressive sonorities.

It is nearly universally agreed that Mozart's string quintets not only surpassed his earlier "Haydn" quartets but are amoung his finest chamber compositions - and in the entire clasical repertoire for that matter. Particularly, the late string quintets, K515 & 516, are thought to be Mozart's pinnacle chamber compositions. One will be hard pressed to find finer recordings of Mozart's magnificant string quintets than these by the legendary Grumiaux Trio (+ Lesueur and Gerecz to round out the quintet). Their landmark recordings here are cited in nearly every major review as a truly exceptional example of the art of chamber music playing. The major reviewers/guides (Gramophone, Jim Svejda, Penguin and Third Ear) all give them the highest accolades, while Gramophone notes that, "This edition belongs in the pantheon of Great Mozart recordings." In addition, Gramophone awarded the String Quintets here their highest award - one of the "Top 100 Recordings of All Time" - which is recognition about as high as you can get in the music world. Their playing are supremely lush, galantly poised and tonally opulant - serving this special niche of Mozart's output honorably. Grumiaux really sets a standard for the ages of how to play Mozart, and such perfection of style is seen in these works (as in much of his Mozart recordings.

Equally, the recorded sound of the highest clarity (as usual for Philips). Philip's Quintets I and II is an absolutely superb, timeless set of four CD's that contain some of the creme of the classical chamber repertoire. Having all the Quintets on four CD's is of great value - as is the DUO "twofer" price. Chamber enthusiasts will want to get both Vol.I and II as each set contains 2-3 major works that are amongst Mozart's most prized chamber compositions. A wonderful investment in history and music that will never go out of style.

A great CD showcasing a GREAT INSTRUMENT.......2002-09-24

My brother bought me this CD when I started studying cello, and it provided an excellent collection of different celistic styles. All of the tracks are tuneful and many showcase virtuosic playing -- the listener gets a real feel for the variety and depth of the cello's sound.

The novels of Hermann Hesse have always been contemplative, coming-of-age affairs, but in his post-apocalyptic novel, The Glass Bead Game, the arts, philosophy, and science collide head-on to create an enthralling, thought-provoking read. From this enlightened springboard, we have Music for a Glass Bead Game, a collection of music that is a fitting synthesis of the game described in the book (an intellectual exercise in which one idea elaborates off another). Bach's Inventions--mentioned in the book--are spread throughout the disc, but they hardly steal the show. Instead, they provide an interesting contrast with lesser-heard works for violin and cello. Kodály's Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7, is gorgeous, expressive, and filled with folksy touches. Cellist Nathaniel Rosen and violinist Arturo Delmoni deliver stirring performances with plenty of grace and delicacy, working as equal and sympathetic partners. On Martinu's Duo for Violin and Cello and Handel's Passacaglia, they similarly shine. Special nods go to John Marks Records for their impeccable recording of this pair. A disc featuring some of these works performed by Nigel Kennedy and Lynn Harrell is available, but--sonically and musically--it can't compete with this sensitive and unique recording. --Jason Verlinde

Chamber music with attitude.......2002-09-20

I've owned this cd for almost 2 years and return to it regularly when I'm in the mood for a bit of attitude from a couple of string players... The playing is top notch and the recording quality is excellent. (For the audiophile, the instruments are very "real sounding"). The selections are inspired, I love the spaning of era's and all the pieces "work" in sequence (a tough task to accomplish with music from various composers). This disc has also introduced me to a new favorite composer; Kodaly.

This is simply a wonderful disc musically, artisticly and in terms of sound quality. A rare treat.

Violin for audiophiles.......2002-09-06

I am not a violin lover, but I asked John Marks to recommend a CD or two to use for equipment reviewing purposes. Glass Bead Game was one of them. The recording is not only excellent in audio quality, but the music itself in incredibly intriguing.
A compilation of short works, the CD is not your typical violin concerto, but a series of unpredictable pieces that hang together in a very involving way. I find myself listening to it over and over again during breakfast as well as after dinner.

Not only is Arturo's playing flawless...as best my untrained ear can tell...but the texture of the notes is extremely involving on my high resolution system. I didn't expect to be so delighted with it, but I am. Thank you very much, Mr. Marks.
Excellent recommendation!!

Worth every cent.......2002-09-03

Nicely judged program of music for violin and cello, with modern pieces by Kodaly and Martinu balancing Bach and Handel. Sounds especially good if you happen to have a CD player that does HDCD decoding (there'll be an "HDCD" logo on the front if it does). But it's excellent on a standard player too. Classic and Modern Duos for Violin and Cello........1999-02-12

This recording brings together two important twentieth-century duos for violin and cello. For variety and contrast, they are presented with shorter baroque and classical works arranged for violin and cello. The result is a fascinating and delightful program.

Kodaly is neither Romantic not Modern; he is sui generis, in a class by himself. His roots run deep into the Hungarian folk tradition, which he studied and championed and then distilled into a very refined personal style. His sound is sometimes similar to that of his countryman Bartok, but I find it more lyrical, introspective, and subtle. It's deceptively simple on the surface, but this economy transmits musical expression of great depth.

Delmoni and Rosen play the Kodaly Duo passionately and with a rich, resonant tone. The Adagio is searching, mysterious and dark, and it is given a sympathetic reading here. Overall, this performance is very smooth and polished, with moderate tempos and very clean intonation and articulation. This is in contrast to the more astringent tone adopted by Josef Suk in his live performance with Andre Navarra on Praga, a more typical East European sound. Delmoni and Rosen sound restrained by comparison, but they are just as expressive in a different and less direct way.

The Martinu Duo is a short and powerful piece with some very effective contrasts between the two movements. The first is eerie, spooky, even creepy, but with counterpoint as precise as that of Bach. It is dissonant and tightly organized to great effect. The second movement shares the sense of precision but has a very different feeling; made up mostly of fast runs, it is lighter, even amusing. And the time signature keeps changing. In the middle of this mad Rondo is a short passage where the mood of the Prelude returns, briefly, while the rest of the movement runs rings around it. (My interpretation of the work is as a quasi-religious dyptich of ominous death balanced by exuberant life. And always in the midst of life, the spectre is with us.)

Delmoni's brilliant passagework and Rosen's earthy tones are well suited to putting across the various moods of this piece.

Tommaso Giordani wrote operas and songs and was based in London and Dublin for the better part of his career. His Duetto is a pleasant, if somewhat predictable, collection of early Classical figures and gestures.

No transcription is credited for the Bach Inventions, and I have no doubt they are played straight from the keyboard score. Alongside the bright, inventive pieces described above, the Bach seems somehow dull, and perhaps they are played this way deliberately. The Inventions are included to provide contrast to the Kodaly and Martinu works. After hearing Bach we are more aware of the freedoms these later masters enjoy. The Bach pieces are taken very seriously indeed.

The recital ends with a Handel passacaglia, a brilliant set of variations taken from one of the Suites for keyboard. All the contrasts presented in the rest of the program are summed up here, all the colors and moods are repeated in miniature, bringing the hour to a suitable close.

Excellent CD of Mozart's Last Major Chamber Works.......2007-04-08

Both of these String Quintets are the last of Mozart's major chamber works, and how wonderful they are. K.593 in D Major was written in December 1790, and is played very well by the augmented Eder Quartet. Even though Mozart is entering the last year of his tragically short life, the music is consistently great. The acoustic of this recording is full and natural, definitely enjoyable. Mozart's last Quintet, K.614 in E flat, composed in April 1791, is also full of wonderful turns of expression, as he so effectively uses the added second viola for some enjoyable tonal delights. This is the best of the three volumes of Mozart's String Quintets on Naxos. Volume 1 is good, but Volume 2 is disapponting. The Penguin Guide gave this third volume a 3-star review (outstanding). You will not be disappointed if you purchase this excellent, nicely-priced CD from the critically-acclaimed Naxos label.
