3 out of 5 stars Untitled.......2005-06-18

This is the third volume of Neil Norman's synth-pop versions of Science Fiction music. If you are into Science Fiction soundtracks, you will probably enjoy it. Although "Raiders of the Lost Ark" isn't Science Fiction by any stretch of the imagination. Like on the other albums in this series, Neil cheats a little by throwing in a couple of his own original compositions that weren't actually written for television or the movies ("Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet" and "Into the Alternate Universe".) There is an unlisted 19th track here, which is a barely audible recording of a woman saying, "You have just interfaced the Greatest Science Fiction Hits by Neil Norman."

4 out of 5 stars "Who goes there".......2000-03-23

This third installment of "Greatest Science Fiction Hits" is getting better and probably the best thus far. Norman blends almost 50 years of themes with some surprises.

Howard Hawk's - "The Thing From Another World" was loosely based on a short story by John Campbell - "Who Goes There", excellent directing from Hawk's and a wonderful theme and score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Norman captures the moment with this arrangement of the title THE THING (1951). Another stand out - H.G. Well's classic - WAR OF THE WORLD'S (1953) this pretty scary and tense sci-fi thriller with fantastic special effects was and still is a trip to the viewer and listener. The highlight is - THE PRISONER (1967) star and creator Patrick McGoohan as Number 6, an unnamed agent who is sent to "The Village" for rehabilitation, Grainger's theme is an upbeat version of a piece originally called - "The Age of Elegance". THE PRISONER theme is not heard on many compilations, this is a refreshing and pleasant surprise.

A "must have" for all sci-fi and film collectors of scores and soundtracks.

4 out of 5 stars Neil Norman still warping along.......1999-04-14

Neil Norman's third CD of SF music features a blend of themes from almost fifty years of Science Fiction cinema and TV. The best treatments are "The Thing from Another World", "War of the Worlds", and "Lost in Space 1 & 2". Norman's respect and affection for genre music is evident throughout the CD.

1 out of 5 stars Robotic and Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack.......2005-11-05

This cd contained some bad music overall but some of the really good ones were excellent. So I guess I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy this CD.

1 out of 5 stars IT STINKS.......2004-10-13

Disco sci-fi?? They got to be kidding. Stay away from this mess. The 1 star rating is false. It's the only way I could get this thru. It's really a big ZERO.

4 out of 5 stars Cool variation of the themes........1999-07-13

These are some of the best science fiction movie themes thrown onto one CD. The music is changed into a more jazzy, futuristic tone. Some of the songs suck, but it is an overall good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Too synthetic!.......1999-04-14

This is actually a re-release of a CD that originally offered several more tracks, including "The Twilight Zone" and a jazzy variation on "2001."

This version offers no substitutes for the missing tracks, and the new arrangements of the surviving tunes are lifeless interpretations pumped out of a sytnthesized orchestra.

The kiddies might like the upbeat tempos, though.

Caveat emptor!

4 out of 5 stars Jabba's Theme in all its glory.......2005-05-10

The whole CD, short though it is, is good, but the real reason for a John Williams fan to buy this one is the concert version of "Jabba's Theme" from "Return of the Jedi." That particular theme appears on the "Jedi" soundtracks, but not as a complete and contained work, which is what you get here. And, naturally, it's fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars The Music of the Stars.......2003-08-28

Out of This World is a 1990 Philips reissue of a Boston Pops album first released in 1983, shortly after the release of Return of the Jedi. As with 1982's Aisle Seat, conductor John Williams and producer John McClure showcase music from classic science fiction movies and TV series. Although 5 of the 11 tracks were composed by Williams ("Adventures on Earth" from E.T. and a concert hall suite from "Return of the Jedi"), Star Trek fans will be happy to know that Alexander Courage's "Main Theme" from the Original Series and Jerry Goldsmith's "Main Title" from Star Trek: The Motion Picture were included.

As always, "America's Orchestra" tackles each composition with the same sensitivity and care as if they were pieces by Mozart or Beethoven. The pieces are relatively short -- "Adventures on Earth," the longest single piece, lasts slightly over nine minutes, while the Closing Title from "Alien" runs shy of the three-minute mark -- and are evocative of those hours spent in front of the television or in the darkness of the movie theaters where we went on those astral voyages of the imagination.

2 out of 5 stars Great example of substandard Williams/Pops.......2002-09-19

This recording is shaky at best. At worst, Williams and his engineer were drunk during the recording sessions. The main problem with this album is, the orchestra sounds like an amateur or college orchestra, rather than a major professional organization. The ensemble sounds thin, as if lacking enough musicians to pull off the grand scope of the music. The engineering is sub-par compared to other Williams/Boston Pops releases. The sound quality seems lackluster for a 1983 recording (couldn't they have mixed it to get rid of the shrill woodwinds and brass?). Worst of all, the orchestra plays out of tune at several points (specifically in the French horns, trumpets and woodwinds). Especially in the "ET" and "Return of the Jedi" tracks, is this REALLY the Boston Pops??

Perhaps I'm being too critical. After all, Williams had only been the conductor at the Boston Pops for a few seasons before undertaking this mess. However, this recording pales in comparison to his other recordings of the era. The cuts from "Return of the Jedi" are nothing special; there are any of a number of other re-recordings of these tracks that I would recommend over this one. Williams' conducting seems uncertain during the pieces he didn't compose, for example, the excruciating tempo variations in "Battlestar Galactica" and the unbearably slow rendition of the "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" theme (Goldsmith would have picked up the pace significantly).

The BPO as heard on this album lacks the panache and polish of later recordings (including subsequent Williams efforts), and this is easily the worst Boston Pops album I've heard. In the end, for what you get in this collection, I recommend Erich Kunzel's "Star Tracks" compilation over this hackneyed effort. You'll find better performances and higher quality in the Cincinnati Pops compilation, with renditions of these great themes sounding more faithful to their original versions.

5 out of 5 stars Great for science-fiction fans.......2000-08-31

If you are a science-fiction tv/movie lover you'll find this CD to be great. Boston Pops offer their usual performing excellence, very well conducted by John Williams. Very enjoyable, indeed.

3 out of 5 stars Nice synth remixes of scifi classics.......2003-09-29

Koto-bass meets spacey scifi themes - one's dream has come true? Generally I like the remakes on the album, Koto has added some extra Koto'ish touches while keeping the feel of the originals.
However, I was very disappointed when I heard the Koto's version of 'MacGyver theme' for the first time. Why did they change those famous chord stabs?! Now it sounds completely wrong.
Fortunately most of the other songs on the album remain pretty faithful to the originals. I was delighted to find out that Koto covered some music of John Carpenter. Koto's style fits perfectly into the dark mood of the Carpenter's originals. My favorite track of the album is 'Twilight Zone'. It's funking fantastic - Koto has really beefed up the original theme. Some of the tracks on the album don't have the power of the originals. 'Terminator', for instance, sounds very thin but as long as the koto-bass keeps rolling I won't complain.

4 out of 5 stars great memory's in Koto's style.......2000-03-02

It's a great CD for people who like Italo-dance music and the great sf-movies of the 80's and 90's. All titles are played in a great way, the only I miss is a little bit more beats. Great CD for playing a party's as background-music, on holidays load on your CD-player at the beach and as music during study.

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy remake.......2007-06-30

I bought this CD years ago and after moving my collection, I dusted this off. I remembered I didn't really like it the first time I heard it and after playing it again I remember why. It is as one of the other reviewer said... "discofied tunes". It's copyrighted 1986, but the sounds are strictly 1970's generic tv sounds. Ugh, everything was so badly synthesized. I bought this originally thinking it was a compilation album of sorts. Hey if your thing is synthesized, disco sounding tunes, go right ahead. If you are looking for closer to original reproductions, look elsewhere. This may actually be the first CD album I considered throwing away, and after the used prices I see it going for I may just do that.

3 out of 5 stars Can you read my mind?.......2004-05-09

This is the first of Neil Norman's Greatest Science Fiction Hits. The album features re-recordings of famous science fiction themes, produced and arranged by Neil and the late great Les Baxter. The songs are done in a discofied synth pop style, which works pretty well in most of the cases here. I said that these are famous science fiction themes, but four of the tracks here were apparently written especially for this album by Baxter or Norman. I have been unable to find any information about a film called "Journey to the 7th Galaxy". There have been films called "Phantom Planet", "Not of This Earth" and "Black Hole", but the tracks here do not appear to be from those films. Regardless of all that, this is a fun album. Recommended to science fiction fans.

4 out of 5 stars "We are not alone in this universe".......2000-03-06

An expert in creating a sound very similar to the original Sc-Fi score, 16 familiar soundtracks are arranged and performed by Neil Norman and His Cosmic Orchestra. Produced and arranged by Les Baxter and Mr. Norman, this compilation has some interesting tracks for soundtrack collectors. While many of the serious fans will prefer the "original soundtrack" these are quite good and very entertaining.

There are some stand outs - ALIEN (Jerry Goldsmith) the 1979 Blockbuster set the standards once again for film scoring on the Sci-Fi level - CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (John Williams) in 1977 this composer gave us the feeling we are not alone and the alien is not the enemy, but a stranger we need to communicate with, by what method, well "music" of course, the universal language.

Neil Norman's Cosmic Orchestra scores big on this collection of Science Fiction favorites. The band leans toward a bluesy, jazzy sound that adds a certain charm to the musical arrangements. The two best tracks are "Alien" and the original TV "Outer Limits."

The entire first disc is available on other Silva America CDs, (at the time the star wars songs were the first release, but now they are on Music from the Star Wars saga), the rest on "Space and Beyond" "Space and Beyond 2: Alien Invasion", "The Cult Files" and "Battlestar Galactica A-Z of SciFi/Fantasy TV Themes". The re-recordings are cool but this is mainly a rehash of other cd's, as I said, the entire first cd is available on other Silva collections, and only 9 of the 15 tracks on cd 2 are not available on any other cd i own from Silva. (I don't have Cult Files re-opened or Space and beyond 3, who knows they might be on there)

Obviously, when this album was originally released, the main appeal was the newly recorded star wars tracks, this cd has become more or less obsolete, its still a nice collection, but if you own the other Silva cd's. you don't really need this.

5 out of 5 stars "Silva takes film-score-buffs to the far reaches of space".......2002-05-17

Just in time for the latest George Lucas "Star Wars-Episode II:Attack Of The Clones"(5/16)(John Williams) ~ Silva America and James Fitzpatrick have gathered eight cues from previous Star Wars films to thrill us again. Get ready for another chapter in the ongoing saga of inner planetary tales, all collected for your listening pleasure in Silva's latest release ~ "The Science Fiction Album Volume 1" with 34 tracks on a futuristic 2-CD-Set(with a 3-D cover insert), much like the science fiction pulp covers from the '40s, inticing the reader to purchase, read and dive into another world of aliens and creatures from far reaches of space and planets.

    This collection features the best of the best composers and film scores ~ David Arnold(INDEPENDENCE DAY)~ John Barry(THE BLACK HOLE)~ Bruce Broughton(LOST IN SPACE)~ Bill Conti(THE RIGHT STUFF MAIN THEMES)~ Danny Elfman(MARS ATTACKS)~ Jerry Goldsmith(CAPRICORN ONE/ALIEN)~ James Horner(APOLLO 13 MAIN TITLE)~ Glen Larson & Stu Phillips(BATTLESTAR GALACTICA MAIN THEMES)~ Henry Mancini(LIFEFORCE)~ Basil Poledouris(STARSHIP TROOPERS)~ Trevor Rabin(ARMAGEDDON)~ Alan Silvestri(BACK TO THE FUTURE/PEDATOR)~ Leith Stevens(WAR OF THE WORLDS/WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE)~ Dimitri Tiomkin(THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD)~ John Williams(STAR WARS MAIN TITLE/HAN SOLO AND THE PRINCESS/THE IMPERIAL MARCH/FOREST BATTLE/THE FLAG PARADE/ANAKIN'S THEME/ADVENTURES OF JAR JAR/DUEL OF THE FATES/ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE/E.T.-THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL/CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND).

No doubt the above composers excel in the world of film music, notice how many John Williams scores appear in this collection. Williams is without a doubt one of the major players in this genre, but there are many other composers who can stand up to his high marks when it comes to bringing the full force of a story through music. One such composer is Henry Mancini, if you ever had any doubts about this mans ability to score any film, whether it be drama, comedy, action or sci-fi...this question is answered here with "LIFEFORCE", gives the audience a cinematic education tightly coiled around directors Tobe Hooper's story of outer space vampires. Within each cue of the film, Mancini's score takes over and we are pleasantly surprised with the results.

If you're a "film-score-buff", like I am...then this collection from the '50s', '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s is an absolute must. As an added bonus we feature the world renowned ~ The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra with conductors Paul Bateman, Nicholas Dodd and Nic Raine, plus, yes plus the Crouch End Festival Chorus and one of my favorite sopranos Charlotte Kinder. When it comes to releasing compilations of this magnitude, most labels tend to become much safer in their choices, afraid to make a mistake. Silva America takes the risk and it always pays off, this is one of those times ~ looking forward to "The Science Fiction Album Volume 2", gotta love it!

1 out of 5 stars More like the "Cheeseball Disco Orchestra".......2007-03-01

This disc (available bundled with a collection of covers of monster movie themes, about half of which are from various old-time Godzilla flicks) consists of supremely hokey disco-fied cover versions of music from the listed soundtracks. If these movies had been mid-'70s TV shows, this is what the bumper music might have sounded like. It has camp value, but that's about it.

If you've been wanting to invite a lady friend to enjoy a bottle of Courvoisier and a hookah on your heart-shaped red velvet bedsheets while grooving to something resembling "Also Sprach Zarathustra," then this is the disc for you. If you want to listen to what you actually heard while watching these films, then go for the actual soundtrack albums.

Most people loathe these budget synthesizer movie theme compilations, but this one's not half bad. Ed Starink made his own arrangements of these themes and it is impressive unlike other CDs of these type which just play the original scores on synthesizer. Check this out, its at least worth one listen.

3 out of 5 stars Look! Up in the sky!.......2005-01-16

This is the second volume of science fiction music rerecorded by Neil Norman, with help from the late great Les Baxter. This time around, the arrangements are closer to the original soundtrack versions, although some of the music still has a bit of a "synth pop" feel to it. The "Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back" medley in particular sounds rather "discofied". I should also mention that there are three songs here that are not from science fiction movies or TV shows at all. "Daughter of the Lesser Moon", "Vampire Planet" and "March of the Lizard-Men" are all original tunes written by Les Baxter or Neil Norman especially for this album. "Vampire Planet" is boring, but the other two are pretty good. Overall, this is a pretty entertaining album if you are a science fiction fan.

    4 out of 5 stars "Sci-Fi film score collectors".......2000-03-05

The follow up album is actually much better than Volume One and seems to be concentrating on the "Original Soundtrack" arrangments more. While the series fans and avid film score collectors will prefer the original soundtracks, this is still quite good and entertaining.

Some stand outs - ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN (Leon Klatzkin) which is not heard on too many compilations - DARK STAR (John Carpenter) another selection seldom issued - DOCTOR WHO (Ron Grainer) well represented arrangement - and BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY (Glen Larson) much hailed series with this familar and enjoyable theme.

This collection from GNP/Crescendo Records is a must for any Sci-Fi film score collector, from the small tube to the BIG SCREEN, good variety of tracks on this "2nd Venture" into the realm of space and beyond.

4 out of 5 stars Second Encounter Even Closer.......1999-04-14

This follow-up CD is actually superior to Vol. 1 in many ways. Although the arrangements are still somewhat jazzy, there seems to be an effort to stay closer to the original scores. Some standouts are "Dr. Who", "The Adventures of Superman", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", and "Twilight Zone."
