I'm a long-time listener of all things rock-'n-roll, from Classic rock, to Alternative, and even a little Metal. I first heard this CD while having dinner at a friends house a long time ago, and I loved it. I've always been enchanted with choir music, so I bought this CD. Well, after years of listening to it to help me to unwind in the evening, I somehow misplaced it. So I came to Amazon to order both I and II. Of the two CD's, the first one is still the best, and it still helps me to relax after a long day. The choir show tremendous range in their singing, the assorted instruments are well-played, and I can almost imagine myself sitting in a centuries-old cathedral, enjoying the music and how it rings throughout the cathedral.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

The first song I've heard on this CD is "Miserere Mei..." and I loved it the first minute. I've heard it from a friend who likes classical, and I would've never bought this on my own.

All other versions of these songs I've heard since don't compare to the versions on this CD. Maybe because it was my first listen, maybe they're just good.

Make it your manifest destiny to own this compilation of music. These scores are given to us by the world's most gifted composers. Performing are "heavenly" choirs and instrumentalists demonstrating true virtuosity. Large choirs perform with such intonation qualities! There appears to be just one voice in each section. Your heart will pound when you are lifted so high you realize that you have stopped breathing; likewise, with the sudden timbre of the minor you allow yourself to remember tears. The emotional roller-coaster ride will affect your inner being. It is appropriately subtitled: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation. It is a true gift to hear the genius of Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Faure, and others, performed so well.

Album Description

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Fine Music presenter Jaroslav Kovaricek, Ph.D., compiled the selection of classical music from the Adagio (Complete Edition) series. Jaroslav designed the compilation, of nearly eighty minutes duration, into three parts, to be used for specific purposes.

Firstly, the album can be used as a personalized sonic environment. The beauty of this music can certainly enhance our feelings of well-being and take us away from the many unpleasant sounds in our immediate surroundings.

The second way of using this selection is to listen to it for its musical quality, to hear it purely as musical sounds, to hear every note and its dynamic and timbral quality. This process helps to build better awareness and mindfulness, to develop better sensitivity of our inner ear and improve our intuitive abilities.

The third mode of listening can be in the practice of personal contemplation, even meditation. Once we discover the hidden mysteries of great music, we open our inner ear and the music is ready to help us on our spiritual journey.

The first section, Baroque Movements, featuring beautiful and moving music, is designed for pleasant relaxation. The second section, Slow Motion Emotion, is more personal and can be used for meditating on a wide range of subjective themes. The third section, Soaring Spiritually, can assist our minds in acquiring a better understanding of ourselves and the world.

Great CD.......2007-04-16

Great CD. I listen to this all the time when I am writing or just in a mood for relaxation and reflection. Great classical and instrumental music and a worthwhile escape from the noise and chaos of work, traffic, kids, and that dog that keeps barking outside.

I even fell asleep listening to it and never slept so good. I highly recommend it.

Naturally, one must posess a predisposition for this music appreciation. That said, when played to restore your inner-energy...it works. The specific selection and sequence provide that balance best meant to reenergize. Normally, I'm not 'that' into this music-presentation. For some reason at the time of perusing, it seemed logical to give it a try. Ultimately, I am very glad that I did...powerful stuff, indeed.

this recording is worth the money to buy, especially since it has two c.d.s inside. the songs are indeed fine music, many of the masterworks which you "need" to have. but it is neither the finest recording, nor is it a collection of the finest performances. i am in a near-spectacular choral group which performs these works, and i tend to get overly emotionally involved with grand art. so it is especially helpful, that like the other reviewer said, you can consider playing this through an audio player at your workplace.

These CD's are excellent resources for those who don't realize some of the musical heritage has been lost by the Church and needs to be reclaimed.

A beautiful variety.......2003-06-10

This has got 2 be 1 of my fav. cd's of all time. The variety & arrangment seems 2 be very well planned. While all of the songs are very beautiful & breathtaking, my 2 favs are the Requiem for My Friend by Preisner & the Dies Irae immediately following it. If you ever run across the Preisner Requiem I would highly recommend that you buy it b/c it is soooo expressive & emotional.

Performance Superb. Engineering, well ..........2000-01-09

No one has ever matched Roger Wagner in performances of 16th Century polyphony and this performance of Palestrina's finest was probably Roger's best as well. Impeccable pitch and balance, purity of sound and irresistable phrasing lead to a searing intensity that makes today's recorded performances seem merely pedantic. Even when initially released on long playing vinyl discs, the quality of the sound engineering was disappointing, but as with old Toscanini recordings, once you concentrate on the performance you are drawn right into it.

You might wonder how Roger Wagner, a boy from Hollywood, found his way to 16th Century choral art. His Alsatian father was organist at the Catholic Church in Hollywood. He sent his adolescent son to France to learn Gregorian Chant from the monks of Solesmes and of course, chant was the basis for all ecclesiastic polyphony. Wagner returned to Los Angeles and the Music Departments of USC and UCLA, conducted choirs in several Catholic Churches here, and established the world-touring Roger Wagner Chorale and the Los Angeles Music Center's Masterworks Chorale which performs to this day with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Marilyn Horne and Marni Nixon were very young members of the Roger Wagner Chorale at about the time of this Palestrina recording. I wonder if they were at these tapings. Does anyone out there in cyberspace know?

Great Disc at UNBELIEVABLY GOOD Price!.......1998-12-16

Whether you are just beginning to gather a library and want some staples of the choral music world or have long loved the works on this disc, this cd is an indispensible part of a serious music lover's library. The remastering of these historically memorable performances is first rate. Both main works are done with the reverence to the score and the meaning behind the text that was such a hallmark of David Willcocks illustrious career.

I wish that Willcocks would live forever, but if trends tell us anything about the future, his extensive output will probably be re-issued some time after he takes his place with the heavenly choirs--and the price will probably not be so inviting. This disc is a gift at this price and it makes a great gift, too! As a choir director, I have often given it to friends and choir members. It has always been greatly appreciated.
