Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the definitive releases of Firebird and Rite of Spring.......2006-04-17

For the listener just beginning to learn the genius composer's
works, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST places to begin.

The selections are chosen from the most popular, most well
known numbers from Stravinsky, early in his career. Of course,
in addition to these well picked, well recorded numbers, there
will perhaps be another 10 CD's (if not more) you will eagerly
want to hear, obviously.

I think these 2 CD's are on par, if not slightly better,
than the versions recorded with Stravinsky directing, on
the 22 CD EDITION on the Columbia/Sony label, in terms of
musicianship and recording quality.

Great value, as always, from Philips.

4 out of 5 stars Markevitch's Apollo rises far above bargain status.......2005-12-29

The bulk of this Philips two-fer is filled up with performances from 1973 in excellent analog sound from Bernard Haitink and his second orchestra, the London Phil. I wish I could say they are exceptional readings or exceptionally well played. The Rite of Spring swings between sounding eerie, listless, and crudely explosive. The Petrushka, in the rare 1911 original scoring for huge forces, is mostly quick-step with little digging beneath the surface. The Firebird is enticingly dreamy, although it runs out of steam in the demonic parts--the whole thing feels like leisurely scene-painting. Even so, these are good performances with plenty of striking moments to offset their neutrality, and the London Phil.'s strings sound especially sweet in the Firebird.

The performance of Apollo under Igor Markevitch, which takes up half of the first disc, dates from 1963 with the LSO, and it's the real thing. A truly imaginative, rhythmically alive reading, all the better since Apollo (for copyright reasons sometimes called Apollon Musagete), which is a quiet, reflective ballet, often comes off as anesthetized. Here it isn't, and the sonics are quite good, too, something not so common if you run after Markevitch recordings. Apollo won't raise anyone's temperature who is expecting the thrills of Le Sacre, but if you can buy this set used for a good price, here is an unmissable account. Five stars for Markevitch, an overly generous four for Haitink.

5 out of 5 stars The Rite Stuff.......2005-10-04

If you're looking for a great recording of "The Rite of Spring," look no further. This is it. Stravinsky's other ballets are included and they are excellent as well, but after hearing this particular version of the 'Rite' on the radio, I knew I must have it. I've heard many other interpretations and Haitink has come up with the sine qua non of all Rites. The orchestra delivers an almost superhuman effort. The conversations between various instruments and sections come across with utmost clarity--even during complex moments. No detail has been muddied or lost. The percussion section is outstanding. Better than outstanding--they're amazing! The end result is the most powerful, chilling and riveting 'Rite' you'll ever hear. My highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars One of Haitink's very best records.......2005-07-07

With an assist to Igor Markevitch for his work in "Apollon", this is one of Bernard Haitink's very best records and probably says most about what kind of music the conductor best interprets.

His work in the three great Stravinsky ballets, "L'oiseau de feu" (The Firebird), "Petrushka" and "Le Sacre du printemps" (The Rite of Spring) are the best renderings I have ever heard of these scores, far surpassing the composer's work on Columbia/Sony, in my opinion.

While I have never been a great fan of Haitink and believe he lacks the personality to compete in the CD world in the Romantic symphonies of Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovksy and others, I believe he is particularly in his element here and in another similar Philips twofer of the music of Claude Debussy.

What is the corollary between the two? Both are 20th century composers whose music is more suggestion than statement. The gentle delicacies of "The Firebird", in particular, meet best with the Haitink sensibility to be linear, literal and understated. While these qualities do not translate well in highly charged Romantic music, they are extraordinarily appopriate in these scores, which have been overblown and overplayed countless times on CD by more Romantic conductors like Bernstein.

As if the interpretations and performances themselves were not enough, the recordings of these wonderful "modern" scores -- "The Rite of Spring" is often cast with Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" as the first piece of "modern" music -- are equally extraordinary. The clarity and sound spectrum of these recordings is among the best I have heard from the analog era translated to digital CD. The orchestras play very well throughout and follow Haitink's sensitive leadership at all times.

I have been critical of Haitink's way with Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams in other of my reviews, but I must say here is the essential Bernard Haitink and a demonstration of the very best work he can do. If you have the slightest interest in these scores, I urge you to buy the low-prices classic recordings of Stravinsky's earth-changing music.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Stravinsky Performances Conducted By Haitink.......2002-03-22

This is an excellent two CD compilation of Stravinsky's great orchestral works, blessed with superb performances of the London Philharmonic under Bernard Haitink's paton. Most noteworthy are Haitink's riveting interpretations of "Rite Of Spring" and "Petrouchka", which easily hold their own against other superb versions from the likes of Abbado, Bernstein and Boulez. The sound quality is fine, though I don't think it's a substantial improvement over the original analogue recordings.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hours and hours of fun!.......2007-01-24

Renard alone makes this set worthwhile. No other recorded performance (including Stravinsky's own) brings out the humor and basic "enjoyability" of this piece.

5 out of 5 stars Prodigious performances!.......2006-10-17

Ernest Ansermet' s refined style was always supported by an admirable incisiveness around all what he conducted. And his Stravinsky still stands as one of the most perfect, idiomatic and extraordinary readings ever made; hovered with that deep vision and knower of the Stravinsky' s aesthetic; Ansermet always to blend power, febrile imagination and musculature, among his best achievements I should remark his Fairy' s kiss, The game of cards, Petrouchka, and the thundering Le Sacre are played with the right balance between abstraction and finesse; expression and sumptuous lyricism.

So you should not hesitate just for a second at the moment to decide to go for this special compilation.

Absolutely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ansermet & Stravinsky - A Perfect Pair.......2003-05-19

This 8 CD collection of Stravinsky's Ballets, Stage Works and Orchestral Works is nothing short of magical. Conducted in its entirety by Ernest Ansermet leading the orchestra he founded, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, this box set, while not complete, features all the great Stravinsky compositions -- "Firebird," "Rite of Spring," "Petrouchka," "Pulcinella," and all the Symphonies among others. Unlike most of history's great composers, Stravinsky himself was able to conduct and record his own music in stereo, so why not just get those discs? Well you should, but the Ansermet recordings generally offer superior sound and clarity. In fact, Ansermet was Stravinsky's personal choice to conduct the world premieres of many of his recordings, and Ansermet was selected by the composer to introduce the three famous ballets to U.S. audiences. A mathematician prior to his life as a conductor, Ansermet had his critics as he was virtually self-taught, though he did study music as a youth. But that mathematics background served him well in the studio as his early stereo recordings of everything from Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev to Falla and Chausson are engineered to perfection, and often sound better than the recordings by so-called more famous conductors. But don't take my word for it, buy some Ansermet for yourself and see. If you are not prepared to get this Stravinsky Box right away, then ease in with the new Ernest Ansermet "Great Conductors of the Century" compilation (see my review). You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection - HOW CAN THIS BE OUT OF PRINT!!!!.......2005-10-23

Stravinsky is one of my favorite composers and this set has several of my favorite compositions by him. The "Symphony in Three Movements" is a popular and frequently performed work. Stravinsky said that this work was his reaction to the Second World War. It is powerful and intense. The two fanfares are very short works and it is wonderful to have them recorded.

As I have stated in other places, Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex" is one of my favorite works and I still feel it is terribly under rated. It should be performed more frequently and is wonderful to listen to. Let me also say that Robert Craft has my undying gratitude for everything he did to help Stravinsky when the composer was living and everything he continues to do to promote the composer and help the world better understand his works. Let me also say that this is a pretty good performance of the work and has much to recommend it. However, there are three minor quibbles I have with this recording. The first pains me no end, because I love Paul Newman, but he is the wrong voice to narrate this opera oratorio that is supposed to have a monumental aspect to it. For me, Ralph Richardson's version of the narrator on the Colin Davis recording from the 1960s was darn near perfect. The second quibble has to do with the translation of the speaker's words into English. While some of the improvements are good, the overall effect is too conversational rather than the kind of formality that was intended, even if it was meant to be much more contemporary than the Latin used in the singing. The third quibble is the timbre of the tenor singing Oedipus. He is a fine lyric singer and does a great job. It is just that he does not have the proper monumentality and arrogance that Oedipus needs. But these are not fatal flaws and the work is quite wonderful and the performance worth listening too.

The "Apollo" Pas de Deux is lush and gorgeous and should refute the argument that anyone might have that the Stravinsky is too harsh.

Another of my favorite works of all time is the "Requiem Canticles". Who would believe that a man in his 85th year could still create a work so revolutionary with such wonderful new sonorities? I still find it stunning.

The "Symphony of Psalms" is a very great work that I feel grateful that I have had the opportunity to sing. This recording is very fine and you will enjoy it a great deal. If you take the time to meditate on the Psalms Stravinsky has set the work is even more beautiful.

Then there is the monumentally significant "Rite of Spring". Craft has provided a brilliant and stunning recording that I treasure. This work changed the world in the way Beethoven's ninth symphony did almost a century earlier. Afterwards, every composer had to deal with it in some way, even Stravinsky! I have heard this work live and it is even more impressive than on any recording, but how often do you get to hear it in a concert hall?

There is a wonderful booklet that has the libretto for "Oedipus" and some background material on all the works in this terrific two disk collection.

A fabulous recording of the Rite of Spring led by the man who worked closely with the composer and knows every detail of the piece. The visceral excitement and incredibly fast pace will nail you to your seat.

Rite of Spring is probably my favorite orchestral piece, hence I permit myself the luxury of owning what might mildly be termed "multiple recordings" (in this case, >12). Virtually all of them are wonderful, some more so than others (Ancerl's reading with the Czech Philharmonic is, however, my hands-down favorite--I don't think anything else is even in the same league). Therefore, when I happened upon mentions of this recording on Amazon, I traced the link, read the two favorable reviews, made note of the incredibly reasonable price (third-party seller), and bit the bullet. What, after all, did I have to lose?
First, that Rite. While I wouldn't consider this a reference recording, it more than holds its own. The musicianship is immaculate and the performance conveys real emotion; these musicians are clearly having a great time and are connecting with a Slavic piece at what seems to be a gut level. At these prices, the purchase of this disk would be justified for this reading alone.
        HOWEVER...
The first few notes of Appollon Musagete IMMEDIATELY grabbed me, prompting me, in turn, to grab the jewel case. This piece is conducted by one Sandor Vegh leading Camerata Academica Salzburg. I immediately did some online research and was gratified to discover that Vegh was a largely unsung genius from the same former Austro-Hungarian Empire that produced such talents as Ancerl, Dorati, Kublelik, Ormandy, Reiner, and Szell. He apparently (and most unfortunately) didn't leave much of a recorded legacy; what is available has earned critics' highest praise (and believe me, I intend to verify).
Camerata Academica was Vegh's own hand-picked ensemble, and this reading is perfection. In my opinion, it blows Chailly's much-better-known reading right out of the water--this recording is in another class altogether. The sound on both recordings is a bit thin, but (if forced to decide) my own preference is for performance over sonics unless a recording is unlistenable. Don't look for liner notes--there aren't any (it's a LaserLight release, 'nuff said).
        Warmest recommendation, don't hesitate!

5 out of 5 stars Finally found it!.......2000-07-26

I have finally found my favorite recording of The Rite of Spring. I had recently purchased a box set, and this orchestra performed the second movement. This was the best recording that I have heard, and I began frantically searching for it. And I finally found it! I have never heard an orchestra's sound so clear and defined. It is played with enthusiasm and is very fearceful. It is an amazing recording, and I would recommend it for anyone who is not yet a Stravinsky fan or anyone who has not foudn the right recording.

4 out of 5 stars New from Eastern Europe.......2000-02-16

It is good to see, that Eastern Europe comes back to the rest of the world after 50 years. And good the hear, that even during this time culture did peogress! This recording of the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra with the famous Stravinsky's piece is something unusual. Very high orchestra quallity and beautiful interpretation, this is not something one would expect from unknown ensemble specially, when the piece is The Rite of Spring! I would just wish that more often people will be surprized like that. For sure , this CD is something one should hear!

I don't admire Jarvi as a conductor, so it surprised me that I mostly enjoyed this colleciton of somewhat ragged but spirited performances. The Oedipus Rex in particular woke me up in spots, and all the other performances showed dramatic interest. The orchestra isns't up to a good American orchestra like cincinnati or Pittsburgh, but you can sitll hear an echo of its glory days under Ansermet--it wasn't very good technically then, either, but there was a heap of style to make up for that.
