Without the gorgeous visuals, the soundtrack to Fantasia/2000 is nothing more than a collection of some of classical music's greatest moments. But what moments they are! Conductor James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provide new (though hardly groundbreaking) arrangements for these classical music warhorses. Piano virtuoso Yefim Bronfman joins in to record the Allegro section of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 (if you like this track, check out Bronfman playing the entire piece on his 1999 disc with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), and soprano Kathleen Battle lends a high note to the climax of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. We also get the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice from the original (and now out-of-print) Fantasia soundtrack. Performed by Philharmonia Orchestra, the Paul Dukas composition still steals the show. The original movie may have been a flop, but with any luck Fantasia/2000 will turn some young minds on to classical music, especially with such inspired choices as Respighi's Pines of Rome. Like what you hear? Remember, these are just excerpts and you really owe it to yourself to hear the works in their entirety--slow movements and all. That said, whether you're a Disney fan, an IMAX aficionado, or just a classical-lover-to-be, you can't go wrong with this disc. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids with Autism!.......2007-04-10

As a parent of profoundly autistic twin boys, this CD is so calming and I never tire of listening to it in the car. This CD on their Walkman helps get them through loud basketball games or sensory overload events at school. They LOVE "Rhapsody in Blue!"

4 out of 5 stars Fantasia 2000.......2006-12-30

I have most of these pieces on other CD's, and I mostly got this one for 'Rhapsody in Blue'. If you don't own 'Firebird' and don't feel like owning the entire thing, then get this--it's got the highlights. Overall the selection is varied. You have probably forgotten that 'Pomp and Circumstance' is a real piece, and not just a graduation death march--this CD will remind you, with its very wise summary of the very extensive five marches by Elgar. This is certainly a lot more interesting than most classical highlights CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Great pieces of classical music!.......2005-11-16

This is a really lovely collection of exhilarating and intriguing music pieces. Fantasia helped spawn my interest in classical music. The animation is beautiful in the movie but it's the music which makes it happen.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! .......2005-07-18

My favorite piece of music ever is "Rhapsody in Blue" and I've managed to collect quite a few versions of it over the years. This is the absolute best recording of "Rhapsody in Blue" I have ever heard! I'm listening to it on a constant loop tonight. The entire record is great as is the other soundtrack from "Fantasia." The movie is a wonderful way to get kids exposed to classical music without them even realizing it! Worked on me when I was a kid. Once again, the Mouse works his magic!

5 out of 5 stars One song along would make this worth buying.......2004-11-21

In my opinion, this CD is worth it just for "Rhapsody in Blue," but there are seven other great tracks, as well. Music like this spans generations; it's essentially timeless in its beauty and ability to put a smile on your face. Great stuff. Yes, there may only be eight tracks on this disc, but four of them are nine minutes or longer, so you're not being cheated out of anything. I'm not a steadfast Disney fan, but they really know how to pick classical music for their masterpiece.

Amazon.com essential recording

One of the most thrilling musical experiences of my life was seeing Leonard Bernstein and the Chicago Symphony play Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony live. As Bernstein wrung every last ounce of pathos from the slow movement, I found it incredible that anyone could ever have thought this less than great music. The ending was so loud you could hardly even hear the cymbals! Happily, every bit of that experience--including the full dynamic range--has been captured on this recording, along with a terrific First Symphony. This is one of the great ones. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must have........2007-02-02

While I must admit that this is the only recording I've heard of Shosty's 7th symphony, I can't imagine a more impressive performance. Seriously, this might be the greatest brass playing ever...ever! I highly recommend this recording!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic Performance..........2007-02-02

Up until I heard the live performance of Berstein and the CSO playing the Shostakovich 7th, I had not been a fan of Bernstein, especially because of his NYPO recording of the Shostakovich 5. However, I was so completely taken aback by the live performance of the 7th, that as soon as I could, I purchased the CD set. The 7th is a seemingly overgrown work, too overt and cumbersome, (think of Bartok making fun of it in his Concerto for Orchestra) yet it delivers an emotional jolt that makes one want to stand up and cheer. This Berstein recording got me back onto his side in 1989. It is sad that he had so little time left, however.

5 out of 5 stars You Should Have Been There!.......2006-03-10

Yes, this "Leningrad" does indeed rate five stars, as most, if not all other writers here have given it. Despite some distortion in the louder passages, this recording certainly is a classic document. (I like Bernstein's 1962 recording on Columbia as well, but this simply has more impact.) One reviewer asked how the brass section did what they did. Having had the honor of being at this performance, I can tell you: the already world class regular section was augmented by extra players. If you think the finale is loud on the CD, you should have heard it when it was taking place!

I must correct one writer who said these performances were done in Medinah Temple in Chicago. They were both done in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, the First Symphony recorded without the audience, the Seventh done live. I was privileged to have been there. I'll never forget it!!

5 out of 5 stars Once and never more........2006-02-01

This is the only recording, as far as I know, Leonard Bernstein did with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a group of players with a very long tradition in the American music and with a great technical playing good enough to play quite all the repertoires.

Like in the case of his Mahler's 9 with Berlin, Bernstein only recording with this orchestra is a miracle that happens once and never more, because of many reasons, the first one because this is a live recording in the Medinah Temple and the emotions felt in this CD could not happen again.

I always thought Chicago is a very appropriate orchestra to play DSCH's music, because of the characteristics of the orchestra and of Shostakovich's music, very hard and very sensitive at the same time. One of the symphonies it's better to this couple DSCH & CSO is the 7th that it's not the most complex between DSCH's works, from the technical and musical point of view, but that demands a great and powerful orchestral response, something you can listen perfectly in this amazing recording, in which CSO gives his best, with a baton that understand very well the score, as far as he can... I think no one could understand completely the meaning of the Leningrad not being in the place of the siege or in the scenario described in the double-program of the symphony, probably linked to the oppression Stalin made with his politics to the pre-communist life of Saint Petersburg. I remember Goethe's words, when he said that reading a book is more complex than reading a book. Of course good Goethe talked about understanding a work, and Lenny, even not living that situation gives us a description of the fears, sadness, oppression, etc, really convincing from the very first bar.

Symphony Nº1 is a piece from DSCH's conservatoire years, from 1926, when the composer was only 19 years old and he was suffering a very disturbing economical situation, after his father's death and in the poor CCCP after the Revolution and the Civil War. It's known DSCH had to work in a cinema, under very hard conditions to eat, and that Glazunov took care of having some official assistance for his conservatoire pupil in order to Dimitri gave attention only to composer. The piece is not a great work like symphonies 5, 7, 8, 10, 13... but it shows some details and the personality of the maestro clearly. It was a great success from the same premiere and it made appear Shostakovich as the emergent figure of the new soviet composers, formed in the communist conservatoire... That was what the regime said, because in fact Leningrad conservatoire was mainly what it was before communist regime.

Leonard Bernstein performance of this symphony is a glory from all the points of view, perfectly played and recorded, the piece is fresh, full of tension and emotion, and even that parts not so fine orchestrated shine with real genius. The fourth and final movement is specially outstanding and the way the symphony ends is so good that sometimes I repeat the last minute when it finish. I really don't know any other version played with this very deep conviction on CD.

Seventh Symphony "Leningrad" is OUTSTANDING too, in every movement the orchestral playing and Lenny's conducting is breathtaking. The gigantic crescendo of the first movement is really a monument in the way Lenny control the dynamics perfectly, having an end that is really impossible to repeat, with the scales of the metals and drums full of terror, like watching the face of the death in front of you, in front of the city.

Central movements are wonderfully described too, the dynamics and the control of the tempo is amazing, as we listen in the second movement, a clear example of alternation between fortissimos and pianissimos, as between an atmosphere were everything is like suspended in fears and moments of pain.

The last movement is another Bernstein's `show', because of the way he proclaims the victory of the initial motif, which we could say is not completely affirmed in order to create that two-senses possibilities in the symphony reading. From the very dark beginning of the movement Lenny creates a crescendo that finally leads an explosion in the last bars, outstanding one more time.

The recording is fine, very present, full of body and not so clean like his recordings with Vienna in the 80's (I think about his DSCH's 6 & 9, for example), but it worth very, VERY, very much.

I could not say this is the only possible version, as I read in other reviews. I know about 5 or 6 performances (Rostropovich, Jansons, Haitink, Barshai...), apart from some others life, and of course this is the one I like much more, but not the only possibility, I try to discover always new ways in art, specially in music performances. Jansons' version in EMI is very good too, and we can not forget DSCH music always use to ask for the soviet performances, which are a very different way of understanding the works generally. Kondrashin or Rozhdestvensky shows another ways too.

Nowadays you can buy this 1st and 7th in this double top price CD or in a very interesting 6CDs box which contains Bernstein performances of DSCH's symphonies 6th and 9th with the Wiener Philharmoniker for not to be missed. That 6CDs box offers too his recordings of Stravinsky for DG. I have all of them and I think it worth too, but you remember the best thing in that box are DSCH's performances.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars The only pairing of Bernstein and the CSO, in good performances.......2006-01-22

Bernstein was only 70 when he made this, his only recording with the Chicago Sym., but he was already debilitated and tired. Given his bad health, it's a wonder that these performances of the Shostakovich First and Seventh Sym. are as vital as they are. From anyone else, I would give the Seventh five stars. It is a galvanzing reading captured in great sound. But Bernstein's first Seventh, made in 1962 with the NY Phil., was a miracle of spontaneous, totally committed music-making. If you want maximum sonic impact, buy this CSO recording instead, but get it in the new bargain box from DG that contains all of Bernstein's later Stravinsky and Shostakovich recordings. The latest remastering is impeccable throughout.

Paying full price for this 2-CD set would hurt less if the Sym. #1 were better. I find it lacking in mood and color; it sounds very well played and nicely detailed but little more. When it was over I felt neutral, whereas the earlier NY Phil. version is quirky and digs in more. Again, the sonics are excellent, far better than before.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer delight musically and sonically.......2007-06-02

I have to admit this is the first time I've heard these delicious Shostakovich works. If you haven't, throw out what you know about his music. The Leningrad Symphony this isn't. Would you believe "Tea for Two?" Would you believe some real tongue-in-cheek, highly listenable music? If not, you should. Fun stuff here.

This is the best sounding recording I've ever heard from Naxos. Great hall ambience (in 7.1) yet never drowning in ambience and with great impact. Glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars "Breathtaking".......2005-03-24

Amazing sonics, incredible detail and wide dynamic range encompass this SACD version of Shostakovich`s Jazz suites 1 & 2 et al.

The on the mark "imaging" (details between left and right channels) will blow you away! All the works are grand renditions but the Jazz Suite 1 and the Tahiti trot will bring tears to your eyes!
Another wonderful attribute that Naxos brings to their SACD releases is a different coloring and tint to their booklets.

Glorious!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2006-03-26

The quality of this performance is stunning. Performed by the composer, the Shostakovich piano concertos sparkle on this recording. The orchestra that helped to create this stunning performance is lively and rhythmical. Shostakovich's upbeat and intriguing piano concertos draw each individual listener into the music. Whether you are a fan of classical music or just someone looking for some good music, I am sure that you will appreciate this CD. Trust me; I am a classical pianist, and I have won several piano competitions. This stunning CD is an amazing investment.

By the way, if you enjoy this CD, you might want to buy a CD of Chopin's equally stunning piano concertos!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent performance.......2005-01-14

First of all, Shostakovich was a magnificent composer and performer. The works featured on this CD are a very good representation of his satyrical, ironic style, and the performance of the pieces is perfect. Sometimes the music is dischordant, but never to much; it makes its point without going too far. I bought this CD since I play piano and am working on Shostakovich's Concerto No. 2, and I have not been dissapointed. The sheer speed of some of the pieces is stunning, and the grace and beauty of the slower pieces also amaze me. I highly recommend this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2006-10-08

This was the first recording I heard when I first came to know the piece. Now, I'm a cellist and subject to my own opinions on how to play this piece...be that as it may, there are still recordings I prefer of this piece. The first would be the historic Rostropovich recording with Ormandy, an any subsequent ones he made--the other would be a new one by Korean cellist Ha Na Chang with Pappano and the LSO. Chang's recording in particular offers a chilling sound in the horn and timpani that Naxos fails to deliver on this recording, as well as superior organization, energy, and technique with the soloist.

Maria Kliegel has made better recordings with Naxos, and I encourage listeners to check them out--her Lalo concerto, while not exactly historical or big-name, is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars There are better..........2005-08-29

There are better recordings available of these concertos. Perhaps not at budget price, but Rostropovich's recording's will never be outclassed. Rostropovich experienced the pain and suffering of the soviet regime and so naturally has a better feel for them. I refer more to the second concerto than to the first.

The first concerto is well recorded, and a fine contribution from Kliegel. There are many good recordings like this though. There is a little lack in intensity and emotion. My main criticism is that the soloist is too backwardly balanced in the second movement.

The Second concerto is another matter. All the movements are taken on the sluggish side, and although Kliegel's technique is perfect, this is not enough. This music is some of the most soul-wrenching, tragic and beautiful music written in the twentieth century. It contains all of what makes Shostakovich such a great composer - pain and struggle, agony, ecstacy, irony, and beauty. It is my favourite work by Shostakovich (and i like Shostakovich ALOT!). As Rostropovich said - Although it is not as startingly virtuosic as the first concerto, its profundity is second to none. In comparison with Rostropovich with the Boston Symphony (on a double disk called 'Great Works for Cello and Orchestra' - highly recommendable in every way) Kliegel's effort pales. I am a cellist and whenever I practice this work, I find myself emotionally exhausted afterwards. To me Kliegel sounds disconnected from the work, something that makes for unexciting and dreary listening. From this recording, one would be excused for thinking it an inferior work.

For a budget disk its not bad overall - As I say, the first concerto recording is quite recommendable. Naxos have many better cello disks though, such as the Barber, Walton and Finzi concerti.

3 out of 5 stars good, but falls short.......2004-12-24

I found these performances adequate, but not compelling. The intensity of these works is not immediately evident in the playing. At several points, there is some rather annoying strings-hitting-the-fingerboard noise that disrupts the music. I would recommend Rostropovich and the Philadelphia Orch (yes, the original recording) as the definitive version of No. 1, and Rostropovich and Boston for the 2nd Concerto.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, intense, spontaneous-sounding DSCH.......2002-12-07

This is one of Naxos' very best (no small feat!). I wish I knew more about Maria Kliegel. Her passion *burns* up this CD. The only better performance I've ever heard of the First Concerto is Rostropovich's own first (live) performance, in Russia, available on the EMI boxed set "The Russian Years." While Rostropovich owned that work and there's no one else I'd rather hear play it, this release benefits from better sound. And the passion isn't just about speed and virtuosity: one of the disc's highlights is the accompanying figure in the lower strings near the beginning of the First Concerto's second movement, as the cello plays the main melody (starts exactly at 1:00). They sound like they are speaking DSCH's intimate confessions. I've never heard playing quite like that in any other version. The cadenzas throughout the disc are stunning. Throughout it all everyone sounds like they are improvising this music on the spot: the same day I auditioned this I also listened to Heinrich Schiff/M. Shostakovich on Philips in the same two works. That is also a fine disc and sonically stunning (just listen to the horns on the first movement of No. 1 there!), but this recording takes first place for conviction, intensity. By comparison, Schiff & friends sound like note-readers. And the sound on this disc is just a hair below that of Philips. (This disc also has the advantage of still being in print.)

The Second Concerto, one of Shostakovich's greatest works, one of his most unique creations, pushes the cello into new realms (for the time). The Soviet body politic really must have hated this music! Listening to this work again after many years, I had the thought (probably obvious to everyone else) that it has more to do with his last string quartets than with any former cello concerto in the literature--including his own No. 1. This is bleak music, yet music that is compelling for the new way it delivers that bleakness. No one knew more shades of gray in his final years than Shostakovich. Again the musicians sound like they are composing on the spot, channeling DSCH from the grave. Words are failing me in an attempt to describe one of the best CDs in my 3,000+ collection, so I'll just say, get this disc!

It's interesting that Maria Kliegel first brought attention to herself by winning the prestigious Rostropovich Competition. She is the only cellist I've ever heard to rival and maybe even (in the G Major concerto) outdo Slava. (I'll have to put on his recording again.) And at this price, this CD is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2002-04-07

Maria Kliegel is an amazing virtuoso, whose recordings burst with a wild vitality. Her talents are perfectly suited to these Shostakovich concerti, with their dark powerful intensity and moments of absolute starkness. This is playing that far surpasses Yo-Yo Ma's performance of the piece, and in many ways, this recording rivals the great one of Rostropovich. I would disagree with the reviewer below me, who claims that "the orchestral playing is quite dull." While Antoni Wit might not be the world's foremost conductor, he coaxes out of the orchestra a powerful, driving intensity. The timpani are too close-miked and their dynamic is too loud, but I found myself liking that by the end, and I'm not convinced it wasn't engineered that way on purpose. The piccolos might also be a bit too shrill at times, but Shostakovich's orchestration almost begs for that. Between the quality and the price, this is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Genius Under Pressure.......2005-07-08

This album is a compilation on the "lighter" ,usic of the 20 Century Russian maaster Dmitri Shostakovitch. Most, if not all of this music was composed on commission from one or another soviet "cultural" bureau dealing with variety entertainment. The music was used for popular dance programs, circuesses, musical theatre, etc. Why did the usuallky serious, solemn, master accept such commissions? In a word, to stay off the Gulag. Shostakovitch fell precipitously from favor with Stalin because of the form and content of his ooera "A Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk".
He felt threatened by the enmity of the paranoid Stalin (as did countless others) for the remainder of the dictator's lengthy reign. He felt (probably quite correctly) that he had to prove, by appearances at least, his commitment to Marxist/Stalinist notions of art and the masses again and again, hence his accptance of commissions for "popu;ar" music. What this album demonstrates, however, is, that whatever his conscious motivation was, Shostakovitch remained a dedicated composer with very high standards even in this "lighter" area. The little pieces which make up the "Jazz Suites" and "Ballet Suites" are gems of humor and sentiment, often spiced (risking Stalin's ire) with subtle irony, and not-so subtle satire. I highly recomment this album for relief during or after a long session with Shostakovitch's sympronies.

5 out of 5 stars Maisky is near the summit, and the sonics are very splashy.......2005-11-11

Since CDs came in I've bought five versions of the Shostakovich First Cello Concerto, and for some reason all of them are very good. Is this a piece everyone plays well, like the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, the Bizet Sym. in C, and the Prokofiev 'Classical' Sym.? Maisky produces a warm, romantic tone, but he keeps it more in check than Rostropovich. His approach to this work is soft-grained, totally un-Slavic, and yet eloquent. MTT is more fierce than is his wont. Good.

In this CD half the work is being done by the recording engineers, who make the solo cello sound as loud as the rest of the London Sym. combined. In fact, the whole soundscape has been manipulated for glossy color and middle-of-the-orchestra intensity. There's nothing realistic about it, but it's certainly gripping. You will either consider this a horror of multi-miking or a showpiece.

I'm inclined toward the latter, but I hope new listeners don't go to a concret hall expecting to hear a real-life cello drown out the brass section--or even the flutes. (The Second Concerto has enver convinced me, so I am not in a position to review it fairly.) Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The album of choice for both Shostakovich Cello Concertos.......2005-02-20

After hearing the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 performed by the San Jose Symphony a few years ago, I bought a recording (not this one) with both concertos that I happened to find available locally.

Then I found the Gramophone magazine recommendation at their web site for this recording with Maisky, Tilson-Thomas and LSO. They indicated that this was the best choice for an album with both concertos. I searched for months in physical stores in the Bay Area without finding it, and finally ordered it from HMV in the UK as Amazon.com did not have it at the time.

When I received the album, I compared it to the other one. And it is better, no question.

Now that it is available at Amazon, I don't see any reason to choose anything else.
