5 out of 5 stars Richter recordings revisited.......2007-05-27

This is a masterful performance and I would recommend this release without reservation. However the NYTimes reviewed this as well as the other discs in this series by Decca and declared these as "new" releases. Not so! If you already own the Phillips series of "Authorized Richter recordings" you already own these performances.

Volume 4 of Parnassus's Sviatoslav Richter in the 1950s lives up to the standards set by its three predecessors. There are no additions to the Richter discography--such as Liszt's "Vallee d'Obermann" or Ravel's "Le Gibet"--which were highlights of the earlier volumes. It's just Richter at his best in performances--new even to aficionados of this pianist--that are often different from Richter at his best in performances familiar to us.

Take Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in a 1954 performance with the USSR State Symphony led by the great German conductor Hermann Abbendroth. Like his first studio recording in the early 1960s (an out-of-print Deutsche Grammophon disc in which Richter is partnered by another distinguished German, Kurt Sanderling), this is a classically shaped performance. But we also hear some of the ferocious dynamism captured on a Praga disc that Richter displayed in 1956 when he played the piece with the Brno State Philharmonic and conductor Bretislav Bakala.

Parnassus's version of Prokofiev's Sixth Sonata shows the pianist operating at a white-hot intensity that surpasses even his performance on Volume 5 of Doremi's Richter series. As Leslie Gerber writes in the program notes, this 1956 performance "captures much of the same furious passion" that some of us heard when the pianist performed this work in Carnegie Hall more than 40 years ago. Everything on these two discs--particularly the pianist's phantasmagorically psychedelic version of Scriabin's "Vers la flamme"--will delight any one interested in the art of the piano. --Stephen Wigler

Few, if any, historic releases are as charming as Ivory Classics' Shura Cherkassky--The Historic 1940s Recordings. For Cherkassky--as for his teacher, Josef Hofmann--music was a vehicle for self-expression. Stories about Cherkassky's personal eccentricities are the stuff of legend, but he was not so much an eccentric pianist as an individualistic one. Unlike individualists of our own day, who seem to play "differently" simply to provoke and who merely sound quirky, the miracle about Cherkassky is that he usually sounded natural. You'll surely never hear a Brahms F Minor Sonata more original than the one reissued here. In the finale, the pianist discovers inner voices whose existence would have astonished Brahms himself. But despite the pianist's interest in luscious tone, polyphonic texture, and details within individual phrases, he never loses grasp of the overall shape of the work. Much of the rest of what's contained in these two discs is simply magical. In short, familiar pieces by Chopin and Liszt and, particularly, in lesser-known works by Medtner, Rebikov, Chaminade, and Scriabin, Cherkassky's pianism evokes the elegance and melancholy of a vanished era. --Stephen Wigler

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars SHURA CHERKASSKY - more 1940s delights resurrected!.......2001-05-19

This excellent duo of CDs contains the same collection of early Vox and Swedish Cupol label recordings as on Pearl's `Piano Masters' series that Cherkassky made in 1946 and 1949. {see my review}. In addition to these rare and wonderful bonbons by Khachaturian, Shostakovitch, Liadov, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Rebikov, Glinka,Scriabin and Medtner etc., Ivory Classics also gives us the HMV historic 1940s recordings. Disc 1 begins with Saints-Saëns `Prelude and Fugue in F minor' in which the repeated chords of the Prelude shimmer delightfully at all dynamic levels from pianissimo through to fortissimo and the following Fugue sweeps along energetically with some brilliant octave playing. Cherkassky's Brahm's Sonata in F minor {a Vox recording} is also full of youthful passion, exuberance and grandeur. The Liszt `Liebesträume'{Electrola } is played with Cherkassky's full-throated cantabile and the HMV Chopin selection consists of: two Mazurkas, performed with a delightful feeling for their rhythmical dance origins - the second Impromptu in F sharp major played with Cherkassky's ravishing singing tone; the right hand scale passages fairly sparkle, as do those in the famous `Fantasie - Impromptu; Chopin's great Fantasie in F minor and two Etudes Op.10 {No: 12 & 4} which end disc 2 are brilliantly executed. Some critics have found Cherkassky's playing to be either `wilful' or `mannered'. On the contrary, these 1940s recordings are full of character and imagination - a quality that is in short supply these days! So do you purchase this Ivory Classics two CD set or the Pearl single CD? If you can afford it - buy both. The Pearl has a `live' recording of the second and third movts of Tchaikovsky's second piano concerto with Stokowski and the Hollywood Bowl SO . The Ivory Classics transfers are very good and their booklet is exemplary. Not only does it give detailed biographical notes of Cherkassky and all the composers featured but it also includes a fascinating selection of very rare photos of the great pianist as a boy and also at the time these recordings were made. I particularly like the photos taken of Cherkassky seated at the keyboard in his Hollywood home and one taken of him as a 13 year old wearing knee length boots and a large flat cap! An absolutely delightful tribute to a unique artist.

      5 out of 5 stars SHURA CHERKASSKY - 1940s treasure-trove resurrected!.......2001-05-13

Recorded for early Vox and the small Swedish Cupol labels in 1946 and 1949, these very rare Cherkassky recordings of mainly short encore style pieces and more substantial works by Liszt {four Hungarian Rhapsodies}, Chopin's Polonaise in A flat Op.53; the second and third movts of Tchaikovsky's Second piano concerto in G major {Hollywood Bowl SO /Stokowski} the latter, the earliest recording of Cherkassky ` caught `live' on the wing', are a treasure - trove of delights. Cherkassky {like Emil Gilels} played Tchaikovsky 2 in the truncated version by Ziloti but as the cuts mainly affect the {for Tchaikovsky} melodically uninspired and meandering middle section of the `Andante' it is no great loss - especially as Cherkassky is imaginative and unique in the solo part. In 1946 this work that Cherkassky made very much his own,{ especially after his famous recording of both the first and second concertos for DG in 1956}, was a rarity! A great pity that on this occasion the big first movement with its thrilling cadenza {which probably influenced the composition of the cadenzas of Rachmaninoff's third and Prokofiev's second concertos} wasn't played. I heard Cherkassky give many magnificent performances of Liszt - the Sonata in B minor, First concerto, the Hungarian Rhapsody No:12 ; here he plays No:5, a funeral march and lament which builds to a very impassioned climax; No:6 in which the middle section has the requisite improvisational feeling { although the `friskas' final onslaught of octaves doesn't quite match the demonic virtuosity of Cziffra or Argerich}; No:11 with its cimbalom effects and brilliant finger work and No:15 {Rakoczy March} in which Cherkassky relishes the glissandi. He also plays his only recording of Gnomenreigen; although it is not as fast as the famous recordings by Barere {on APR} or Cziffra, the performance is alive with capricious and imaginative ideas. Cherkassky invariably ended his mammoth recitals with a bouquet of delightful encores. This selection of wonderful ` bon bons' includes pieces that Cherkassky either never essayed or recorded again! There is a lively `Tarantelle' by the father of Russian music Glinka; other Russian music{ in which Cherkassky excelled } includes Tchaikovsky's melancholy `October' form `The Months'; a hauntingly played Scriabin Prelude for left hand; Rebikov's wistfully charming `The Christmas Tree'; two characterfully played Preludes by Shostakovich; a slightly cut but brilliant Toccata by Khachaturian; a performance of Liadov's `Musical Snuff Box' - the gradual winding down of the clockwork imaginatively captured. There is also Medtner's Fairy Tale in E minor and a splendid non-metallic sounding Prokofiev ` Suggestion diabolique' played with great character virtuosity. Cherkassky played Gould's `Boogie -Woogie Etude' as one of his rapturously received encores at his 80th Birthday Recital in Carnegie Hall in 1991; here in 1949 he sounds even more effortless and obviously enjoying himself hugely in Gould's `Prelude and Toccata' dashed off with great style and elan as is Poulenc's dazzling Toccata. Although the recorded sound for the Tchaikovsky concerto is poor, the transfers of the solo items by Seth. B. Winner are exemplary. A must then for Cherkassky's many admirers and an ideal gift for all those listeners longing for a return to more characterful and stylish piano playing.

This wonderful five-disc set presents Emil Gilels in previously unpublished stereo recordings from live performances. One disc is devoted to concertos by Chopin (wonderful!) and Poulenc. The others are all solo piano, including a full disc of Mozart, three Beethoven sonatas (including the mighty Hammerklavier), major works of Scriabin, Schubert, and Shostakovich, and other shorter works. Gilels was one of the major pianists of our century. He played all of this music with great integrity and plenty of color. Melodiya's editors have selected well; there isn't a dud in the series, and some of the performances are truly magnificent. Highly recommended to pianophiles! -- Leslie Gerber

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any piano lover!.......2004-07-30

Gilels publicly performed a limited number of pieces (he only played those with which he felt a "personal relationship," this set demonstrates the wide range Gilels had as a pianist. From the transcendent Mozart to the earthly 20th century Medtner, Gilels is always in total control of how he presents the music.
A previous reviewer claimed that Gilels "shaded" all of his playing the same way regardless of the composer or piece being performed. I emphatically disagree with this statement; if you listen to a lot of piano recordings, you become aware of the subtle nuances different performers have and how they present different pieces. Gilels very clearly differentiates the clarity of Mozart's classicism with the distinctly "Russian" music of Prokofiev. If you are interested in understanding the art of pianism, you will not be disappointed by this set.

        4 out of 5 stars A Rarified Talent.......2000-03-22

This is one of the better box sets I've seen lately. The choice of repetoire is wonderful, covering the classics, (Mozart, Beethoven) to the Romantics, (Schubert, Schumann, Chopin), to twentieth century masterpieces by Ravel, Shostakovich and Scriabin. The surprises of the set are the Medtner Sonata (Lovely!) and the Poulenc concerto. Absolute stunners both. My main hitch is with Gilels himself. While every performance is near definitive, it's Gilels who can't seem to see much difference between Mozart and Scriabin. He colors and shades everything almost exactly the same way and while it is fascinating, it just gets old sometimes. I'm just hard to convince that one mans personality can so ruthlessly crush that of the composers and be RIGHT everytime. It's not possible, especially in light of the great composers portrayed within. But it is fascinating to hear Gilels battle with the material in such a way, even if you just end up feeling sorry for the futility of it all. A fantastic buy at a little over $30.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Serge Koussevitzky.......2005-08-10

Serge Koussevitzky was one of the most important of Russian classical directors in the first half of 20th century. He was the director of Berlin Philharmonic in 1908. A year later, he came back to Moscow and established the famous Koussevitzky Orchestra. In 1921, he came to Paris and founded the Concert Symphoniques Koussevitzky Orchestra. From 1924 to 1949, he was director of Boston Symphony Orchestra. In Boston, he developed the Tanglewood Festival, and Concert Hall (now is the Bershire Music Center). He was also one of persons who had built up a strong foundation for American classical music. Leonard Bernstein was one of his students.

This box set contains some major of Koussevitzky's works at BSO from 1928 to 1947. The sound is mono (of course), but clear and sharpness. Here you can see Koussevitzky gave the standard for Russian music, like the symphonies of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgky, and Rachmaninov, especially in Francesca da Rimini of Tchaikovsky. Beside, you can "feel" the difference of German classical (Symphonies of Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, and Strauss' work) from Russian side, it's so different to other German directors (like Walter, Mahler...).

            Strongly recommend!
