5 out of 5 stars classic music CD.......2007-06-27

The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-02-15

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

4 out of 5 stars Great mix.......2007-02-14

All the best composers! Over an hour of music. A samble of the greatest pieces.

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward Garabedian

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

5 out of 5 stars Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

3 out of 5 stars Too much opera.......2007-01-10

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2000-07-22

I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florence during my trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it has captured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favorite of all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumental and can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir the wanderlust for a trip back to Italy! A must for every romantic!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding compilation of the Italian classics,.......1999-05-01

I have been a music lover for years. This CD introduced some Italian music to me that I was not familiar with. I listen to this music very often...it is almost theraputic in effect. I have never heard more beautiful music together on one CD. You won't regret getting this one!

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

1 out of 5 stars If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

4 out of 5 stars Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

It's beautiful. Simply put.

5 out of 5 stars This is "THE" Greatest Hits alum by Perlman.......2000-12-03

Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!

This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

The Paganini concerto, with its combination of wild virtuosity and fatty, gushy melody, is a favorite of audiences and violinists; fiddlers love to strut their stuff and the public can't resist anything so juicy. Hilary Hahn here throws her violinist hat into the ring with Perlman, Kogan, and Gil Shaham and comes out looking just fine. She handles the incredibly showy outer movements with flair, poise, and startling precision, and spins out the long, Italian melodies in the middle movement beautifully. Similarly, she handles the Spohr almost as if it were composed for the voice--it's an enchanting performance. Simply stunning and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Album Description

HILARY HAHN SIMPLY SHINES IN THESE ROMANTIC VIRTUOSO SHOWPIECES Star violinist Hilary Hahn performs violin concertos by two predominant violin virtuosos of the early Romantic era, Italian Niccolo Paganini and German Louis Spohr. Both concertos were composed around 1816 to serve as effective showpieces for their composersÂ' tour activities and are packed with stunningly virtuosic figures, beautiful cantilenas, and dramatic effects that were intended to leave the audience breathless and helped to establish the violinistsÂ' legendary status.

Hilary Hahn has the superior technique needed to tackle even the most difficult figures and to make this music shine. Her performances of the Paganini Concerto have been hailed by critics: "Hilary Hahn, this queen of Apollonian clarity and compelling concentration . . . In her playing the wondrously singing lyrical passages were a response to the flawless ecstasy of supreme violinistic artistry." (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

Ms. Hahn continues to delight and amaze. This is, of course, a virtuosic piece, and H.H. gives it her usual sensitive, brilliant, flawless reading.

HILARY HAHN IS GETTING VOCAL in the SPOHR!

HILARY HAHN's interpretation of these two great concertos is simply MAGNIFICENT, well even "bewitching", she takes away all that is "diabolic" in this wonderful violin concerto composed by NICOLÒ PAGANINI! So, I give FIVE stars - and even MORE STARS - for her SUPERB and BEAUTIFUL VIOLIN PLAY - as well as for the again extraordinary CD collection! HILARY's violin play makes you feel so much for this music, it is HEAVENLY, EMPATHETIC and it "hides" all those immensely difficult passages which are included in this concerto by Nicolò Paganini. HILARY has so much deep control of and masters even the most difficult passages of this technically inspiring and challenging piece, and she performs it with so MUCH FEELING, SOUL and PRECISION that makes you think these passages are actually not of such complexity, which makes this violin concerto by NICOLÒ PAGANINI so extremely difficult to play. The same is for the SPOHR concerto - which is, sadly to say (!), criticised by a reviewer as "forgetable" and the reviewer also 'predicts' that one "won't listen to very often" (how is it possible that one/a reviewer can/may 'predict' this?!!). No matter! Whatever, HILARY HAHN's INTERPRETATION is completely CLEAN and PERFECT and CRISTALLY CLEAR in the PAGANINI as well as in the SPOHR! As always in her music, HILARY's VIOLIN PLAY is carried with DEEP LYRISM and is really of such "APOLLONIAN" CLARITY which brings so much FRESHNESS into her PERFECTLY INTONATED VIOLIN PLAY which rises from her very HIGH CONCENTRATION and FOCUS on it! So her tone is very clear, but never "thin" and produces many colours in HILARY's always VERY FINE VIBRATO. And, especially on this CD, she shows that she is never a "showy" violinist who only tries to bring out and focus on musical effects rather than on the musical aspects of these two wonderful violin pieces. So her focus is not - as was demanded by some others and mentioned by some other reviewers - on showing preferrably musical virtuosity! HILARY, YOU are SO LOVELY FOR THIS! So, in conclusion: HER VIOLIN PLAY will make you ADDICTED. No matter what some of the other reviewers wrote - forget them! The orchestra and the conducter form a very well-tempered musical unity together with HILARY's solist part while the communication of both the solist and orchestra with conductor matches fluently. The orchestra parts in both works are wonderfully interpreted and in perfect harmony with HILARY's solist part. (And who writes about bad orchestra and conductor support?!! Did we listen to the same CD?!) The orchestra-conductor-solist interaction is such a brilliant example of the same high level in both these concertos and HILARY HAHN is completely equally skilled to perform these two wonderful concertos of the violin literature in her usually high perfection, and once again she KNOWS TO ASTONISH HER AUDIENCES WITH another "EXCEPTIONAL", well let me say EXTRAORDINARY, but unusual CD combination! HILARY, you are so LOVABLE for that - THANKS! Saying that, I really do hope much that HILARY will study and LEARN TO PLAY the REMAINING PAGANINI CONCERTOS as soon as possible and will also record these! MY R E C O M M E N D A T I O N !

And then there are always the same who complain: There is (older-generation) interpreter "X" who is the most favourite interpreter of critic/reviewer "Y" and who performs pieces "Z" in the most likable way of critic/reviewer "Y". So a newer, which means a younger, interterpreter "I" never finds a chance that her/his interpretations of whatever musical pieces will be enjoyed by critic/reviewer "Y" in the same way as those of "older" interpreter "X". I think that people, especially reviewers of classical music, should really CONSIDER the GOOD QUALITIES of NOWADAYS' INTERPRETATIONS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC (such as of this wonderful new CD by HILARY HAHN) and seek and find out about and EXPERIENCE what is GOOD IN THESE, rather than preferrably complaining what is "so bad" about these new interpretations made by new and younger interpreters, for example in this new HILARY HAHN recording of the LOUIS SPOHR & NICOLÒ PAGANINI concertos! Today's interpreters cannot, of course, approach, play and interpret pieces in the same way(s) interpreters of those days did - as this would be only copying these! So, they cannot do that! Rather, today's interpreters will always seek new approaches to 'their' classical music - and will, of course, find 'their ways' of making classical music 'their way' which will always be different from the one of those days' interpreters. This is the thing about CREATING SOMETHING NEW! So - as reviewer/critic - please consider this, as otherwise this would mean interpreting newer classical musicians badly! So this recording is anything but a "disappointment", and it is even ANYTHING BUT a "disaster" as was quoted by another reviewer! It's such a LOVELY and WONDERFUL RECORDING! THANK YOU HILARY - especially for the SPOHR who is my "hometown composer"! And, reviews - no matter if they are good ones or bad ones - which consist of only one, two, three or four lines should be removed from any amazon product site! There is absolutely no way for one to communicate, especially complain, his or her opinion only this briefly! So, I think that some reviewers are truly not qualified to write and publish reviews - because some of them write too brief and meaningless reviews, and others write reviews which only compare a CD (this one) to older recordings made by the reviewer's/reviewers' particularly favourite interpreter(s)! And some seem to be by far most unqualified for reviewing any CD or DVD, especially those who write of a "damned thing" when they write down their opinion on the Spohr concerto ("stuff") No. 8, which "sucks" for them, but which is in fact PLAYED so WONDERFULLY on this CD by the MAGNIFCENT HILARY HAHN; so - for this one -, please go to your CD shelf and get yourself your Kogan CD (which I don't mind, because it's wonderful, too!), and please always forget writing more (bad) reviews on HILARY HAHN's CDs and DVDs!!!

Back to the CD again! HILARY HAHN manages the PAGANINI concerto on the same high level as the LOUIS SPOHR (my "hometown composer"'s!) CONCERTO, while her OUTSTANDING VIOLINISTIC SKILLS she has shown in all her recordings so far FROM BACH TO MOZART and now also in the PAGANINI and LOUIS SPOHR as well as in her live concerts simply allow for her to demonstrate her interaction with the orchestra in some passages of the SPOHR concerto more clearly and more brilliantly than in the VIOLIN CONCERTO BY NICOLÒ PAGANINI with regard to the orchestral part of the LOUIS SPOHR CONCERTO which is musically more profoundly composed and of a more complex structure (this is, I think, what some might call the 'more' of a 'substance' compared to the PAGANINI concerto). HILARY HAHN however comprehends to give both these wonderful concertos HER OWN SOUL and GIVES these TWO WORKS some kind of an EFFORTLESSNESS as well as SPARKLING LIVELINESS in her own personal way as well as a FRESHNESS which make this CD an absolute MUST for all of HILARY HAHN's fans (anyway!) and likewise for all of those who are FANs and ADMIRERs OF NICOLÒ PAGANINI and LOUIS SPOHR! So, please - PRESTISSIMO get to CD shelf!

My being so much euphorically excited about these two wonderful new recordings made by MY FAVOURITE VIOLINIST HILARY HAHN I find it almost too much a pity that she releases her next CD - the one with the Sibelius and Schoenberg violin concertos - only in the Spring of 2008 but not in the upcoming September 2007. So I find it more than a good "comfort" that HILARY HAHN's FIRST-EVER DVD "HILARY HAHN - A PORTRAIT" was released in March 2007 (please also see my review of it). On this DVD HILARY HAHN shows us, besides the road-movie-style "Portrait", her wonderfully expressive live performance in her impressively crystally clear, as always brilliant violin tone of the violin concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold in D-Dur, op. 35 and the Mozart sonata K. 301 (293a) in G major which she performed in a recital for a live audience together with her equally wonderful and astonishing longtime friend and piano partner Natalie Zhu. So even in 2007, all of HILARY HAHN's fans can be glad to receive such an "almost" new recording by ALWAYS WONDERFUL, MUCH GRACEFUL 1ST CLASS SUPERB VIOLINIST HILARY HAHN!

This new recording of HILARY HAHN is so LOVABLE, you can keep listening to it for hours and hours - equally to the PAGANINI & SPOHR! -, and I would like to mention that it was a great choice to bring out the PAGANINI/SPOHR CD right within the "MOZART YEAR" while at that time audiences were just swamped with new Mozart recordings, more than one could get!

THANK YOU HILARY - this is WONDERFUL, a TRULY BEAUTIFUL RECORDING, MY VERY BEST RECOMMENDATIONS for this VERY GREAT CD!

2 out of 5 stars Well, it depends on what you're looking for.......2007-05-14

I happened to listen to both concertos on the radio. Here is my opinion: technically, it's really, really good. Maybe too good sometimes. Musically, I have absolutely NO intention to listen to it again any time soon.
However, just for the record, I do admire Miss Hahn as a violinist. Playing the fiddle is not an easy thing to do, folks.

4 out of 5 stars too boomy.......2007-05-08

The violin playing is beautiful, but for you audiophiles, the bass sound is a little boomy.

1 out of 5 stars A disaster.......2007-04-27

No offense folks...but what is WRONG with you guys??? Can't you hear how plain, flat-out BAD this is? Has anyone here heard the Paganini done by ANYONE else? If you haven't, you're just not qualified to review this CD.

And the Spohr--as music--is so intensely boring I had to turn it off. It took all my willpower to get to the end of the damned thing. And I like a lot of Spohr's stuff. For instance, his Quintet for piano and winds is an out-and-out masterpiece. But this thing? It sucks. Plain and simple. Cliched, dull, boring. And Hahn's performance just accentuates everything that's wrong with it.

But, to return to the Paganini. This performance is an utter disgrace. Larry Vandesant's review was right on the money, as far as it went. I think he was being generous, myself. This is NOT the sort of thing Hahn should be playing.

Truth is, Hahn has been overhyped from the start. She is a decent violinist, with a clean technique, and almost nothing to say of any interest in ANY of the repertoire she plays. This Paganini is a perfect case in point. She clearly hasn't the faintest idea of what to do with this piece, except play all the notes as cleanly and flawlessly as possible. And I know she is intelligent enough to know that that is simply NOT enough. That gets you in the door, in Paganini. Then you have to DO something with it. Anything. And that's the problem here.

Paganini's music is short on substance to start with. You have to make something out of it. If you don't, it's nearly as dull as the Spohr, even with all those gymnastics. Hahn plays this thing as if she's a wind-up robot. It's terrible. Listen to Kogan, or Ricci, or, Heaven help me, even Itzak Perlman--who I can't stand, usually--at least those guys put some BLOOD into it, for chrissakes!

You guys who are lauding this thing just don't have a clue. Not a clue. It's sad. Because this is a case of the empress having no clothes...

True, I'm no fan of Hahn. Ok. But, regardless, this performance of Paganini is an embarrassment all around, by any standard (I second Larry's castigation of Oue's work. It's so bad I don't even know where to start).

Both Oue and Hahn should be forced to listen to Harnoncourt conducting anything for a few hours. Then maybe they'd get a clue that you have TO DO SOMETHING WITH THIS STUFF! You can't just "play it." Brahms? You can just play it. It won't be great, but it won't suck. Music like the Paganini? Whole different deal. Too bad Reinhard Goebel never recorded this..not that he would have. But if he ever had, it would have been a hoot. And a hoot is WHAT THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE! Or a jaunt, or a trip...or something. This performance is nothing. Blah.

Yeeeesh... Where's my Kogan..I need an antidote to this sleepwalk. Phooey.
