Ethereal LIszt in Superb Sound.......2006-09-29
A great collection of Liszt treasures.......2004-01-12
Bolet won a Gramophone Award for his 1st book of Années de Pelerinage, which is not strange when listening to the recordings. This is a portrait of a man who's entirely on his own, looking for his soul while wandering trough the beautiful Switzerland - I can't say it better than B. Johnson already did. It's Romantic nonsense, of course, but in Liszt's days it was a common idea, and it can still sweep me away. Bolet's superior tonal colouring - beautiful, but not too far-driven, for the risk it would almost be too intimidating - and his peaceful nature lift this music to the greatest heights. My only complaint would be the `Orage' piece: Bolet's technique can't quite handle it, and its aggressive nature is much less overwhelming as a result. Nevertheless, the rest of the pieces show him at his very best. So does the second year of the Années (that is oddly placed in the set before the first year by Decca). The Dante Sonata, one of Liszt's greatest pieces, fares very well under Bolet's hands.
Equally excellent were the Schubert Song Transcriptions. The transcriptions aren't very different from the original songs, but they are definitely interesting. Especially when someone like Bolet takes them under his hands! All songs are terrifically played, with real standouts like `Auf dem Wasser zu singen', `Der Mueller und der Bach' and `Erlkoenig'. Bolet's romantic touch (he may have been the last of his kind) lets the music unendingly flow. Brilliant!
These comments also apply to Liszt's Consolations, which are placed on another disc. Liszt shows here how much he's in debt to Schubert, and wrote music of a disarmingly lyrical nature. Bolet gives almost naively innocent readings of these pieces. Talking about singing music, why not include the Liebesträume, `Venezia e Napoli' and many, many other pieces as well. Although some people still regard Liszt as a bombastic composer, he was in fact much more active on the spiritual and lyrical area. It is largely this nature of Liszt that is put into the spotlights by Bolet. He is really terrific whenever music ought to sound peaceful and meditative.
But Liszt was also a stunning virtuoso. People may eschew him for that, but that's often without any good ground. The B minor Sonata and the Transcendental Etudes, to give some names, are not only pianistically but also musically amazing works. It takes to be both a good technician and a musician to play them well, and this is where Bolet occasionally fails. He was over 65 when he made these recordings, and I can't help but say that his technique was not anymore what it used to be. In many pieces you can hear him struggle.
In what may be the most difficult music Liszt wrote, the Transcendental Etudes, Bolet takes tempi that are almost too easy (e.g. no.10 should be `Allegro molto agitato' but Bolet plays it very moderately), perhaps because his technique was by then too limited to give the pieces a really impressive treatment. Even then, I do feel a ertain nobility in Bolet's slow approach that gives every study a dignified stature (and that's something you won't find with Kissin or Cziffra!). The sonata is similarly noble and yet tremendously powerful in its scope, even though Bolet may lack some technial control at isolated spots.
Anoter treacherous piece is the `Reminiscences de Don Juan', which is a transcription of no less an opera than -of course- Don Giovanni! Bolet plays this 20-minute piece with a lot of humour and swing: it's a great way to clean up your mind! Also recommendable are the Etudes de Concert (e.g. Waldesrauschen), whose light spirit is very well captured.
A treasure trove set overall, I can recommend it without any limitations. There's no other composer that suited Bolet as well as Liszt, and the vice versa may be true as well. But the pianist also has his weaker points, particularly regarding his technique, that wasn't what it used to be. Oh, and the piano sound is not always equally convincing: the instrument sounds a little shrill at times. But there's an amazing amount of colour in the instrument, and it allows Bolet to reachfor the deepest, darkest sonorities you've heard. This collection is therefore not just THE best Liszt: there are many more pianists who made supreme recordings of him (e.g. Arrau, Brendel, Richter) and I definitely recommend searching them out as well. After you've heard this!
An excellent collection of Liszt interpretations........2003-12-03
Liszt for the ages........2001-12-05
It doesn't get any better than this.
After I heard throughout the seventies about this "unknown" great of the romantic repertoire, I was fortunate enough to see him for the first time about a month after he recorded the first issue of this now legendary Liszt series. While his technique may not have exactly been what it used to be before (e.g. Orage in Suisse of Les Annees), all the performances benefit from the wisdom of many, many years. While all the performances are of a uniform Olympic level, two issue stand out in my mind.
First, there is the cd of Schubert Liszt transcriptions. Bolet really sets the standards for "singing" on the piano. His version of "Der Muller und der Bach" has to be believed to be heard.
Most importantly though, there is "Suisse" the first year of Liszt's years of pilgrimage. I own this disc from the day it appeared on the shelves and still listen to it every month. Surely, there are more technically brilliant versions. For the true "Liszt Nuts", I would certainly advise Leslie Howard's version of "L'Album d'un voyageur", that contains the first version of many of the "Suisse" pieces, and some additional pieces that Frenz (for reasons that escape me completely) excluded from the later Suisse. Yet, nobody, not even Brendel or Berman, have come close to Bolet on delivering on the central theme of Suisse, man finding himself back in an exploration of nature.
While they stem from the earlier days of digital recording the recordings are still more than respectable and benefit greatly from Bolet's attention for color, aided by his favorite Bechstein.
Many of these recordings have not been available for a while. Get them before they're history!

Liszt - Treasures of music.......2006-06-30
Four other pieces on the disc are Liszt's various 'Ave Maria' works, all different and composed at different times in Liszt's life. They are mellow, gentle, and thus on a first hearing they may seem boring. They're actually worth hearing multiple times to really appreciate their quiet tones.
The six consolations are more epitomies of Liszt's soft and patient side. The third one is most famous and sits beside his Liebestraume's as romantic and tender pieces of love. They're all short, you might even call them miniatures. But in such a short timespan the music presents itself elegantly and never ceases to please the ear.
The highlight of this CD and the reason for buying it, in my opinion, are the Harmonies Poetiques. The first one 'Funerailles' is simply powerful. Philip Thomson calls it, "Dark, poignant, defiant, and tragic, just as the events were that inspired it. More powerful or heartfelt funeral music than this has not been penned." I whole-heartedly agree. Some think 'Funerailles' is the best of the entire Harmonies set, and they may be right.
The next of the set, 'Miserere d'apres Palestrina' recalls a somewhat Renaissance musical sound on the piano. Liszt takes a single melody through a journey of tremolandos, chords, arpeggios and it continuously arouses reflection and interest. Following this is the wondrous "Andante lagrimoso." There is something so sad, so mystical, so profound in the delicate piece which suggests tears. Again, I quote Philip Thomson on the work: "The only untitled piece of this set is known by its tempo marking, and is lagrimoso indeed: its initial sighs try their best to transform themselves into at least a semblance of resigned acceptance, but ultimately they cannot. The work ends with the understanding that some tragedies cannot be mitigated by any amount of hope."
The last of the set is typical of Liszt's romantic musical sensibilities: 'Cantique d'amour' is refreshing, lyrical, and sweet to the ears. One last time, I use Philip Thomson's astute observations to vouche for the piece: "The last piece of the set is immediately graspable and irresistible in all respects. Simple in form, and overtly and unashamedly romantic, it is the antithesis of the mood set by the 'Andante lagrimoso.' These last two pieces taken together represent the need for, and the ability of, music to show us what life is: utter hopelessness at war with the hope we must have if we are to live. Our human life may be painful and tragic, and our aspirations ludicrous and doomed, but it is not only possible but necessary that we live and hope earnestly and nobly. The 'Cantique d'amour' is the expression of the indomitable human spirit that has always defied the odds."
Bottom line: Philip Thomson understands how to play these works and is an incredibly proficient Liszt interpreter. I no longer listen to any other interpretations of these particular Harmonies because of his successful renditions. Also, if you're unfamiliar with the works, you would be missing out on Liszt's most beautiful and potent music if you didn't buy this CD.

Liszt was not one of Artur Rubinstein's specialties; aside from these pieces (on mono recordings, 1950-55) I believe he recorded only the Sonata and Piano Concerto No. 1. Damned if I know why. He plays the music here, a well- chosen program alternating showpieces with lyrical works, with the flair of a born Lisztianer. I particularly enjoyed the rhythmic freedom of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12, a nicely musical performance that doesn't forget the fireworks. And there's a nice bonus: three pieces by Anton Rubinstein (no relation) reissued for the first time since a very scarce 45 EP. --Leslie Gerber

Powerful, leonine, granitic, very American.......2005-12-13
This Jerome Rose collection contains, along with the rarely heard Christmas Tree album (S 186,) the complete seven-piece S 173 (Second) set of HARMONIES POETIQUES ET RELIGIEUSES, which includes the popular Funérailles and, best of all, Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude.
Jerome Rose recorded the whole two collections for VOX, and it is a pity that only the second set is hereby available. Rose is not a notably colouristic or supple player, so that the iridescent and multi-silvered tone of a Jorge Bolet or even a Horowitz is not to be heard or expected here. What Rose has is enormous force and power, a truly titanic tone and grip at all speeds. That tone is occasionally rough around the edges (or is it the recording?) but never lacking in Lisztian grandeur. It is useless to compare him to a György Cziffra: that would be like comparing a huge overweight lion (Rose) to a sleek, fierce cheetah (Cziffra.) Rose also has a sense of sustained phrasing, so that, within his Mount Rushmore sense of things, he is quite a player; more celtic bard than Italian sonnet-writer perhaps, but a poet, too. His playing is very impressive, in an American sort of way. At any rate, of the alternatives (TWO anonymous English accountants on Hyperion, a Mad Englishman on Naxos and a dead Englishman also on VOX) Jerome Rose is the only way to avoid perfidious Albion.
Seriously: Philip Thomson on NAXOS would be my first recommendation for the whole collection of Harmonies, but I respect and have a great deal of affection for Louis Kentner and Jerome Rose, two artists of enormous probity, on VOX.
nah, 1 and a half stars really..........2003-02-17
Now the bad news, and there is plenty of it: His playing, especially of the "harmonies", has absolutally no direction, no colour, and is quite boring. Although they should be blended together, he tends to favor clarity over charactor, and personally, i listen to Liszt to be emotionally moved, rather then academically satisfied. I understand he is trying to go for the "meditative" approach to these sacred works, but the music tends to sit more then flow, and I was instantly turned off at the first listen, in perticular, his invocation. Liszt does not always have to be virtuosic, but should at least have life, and lyrical life is what was missing in his "benediction" and "andante largimoso". I couldnt help but beg to hear someone of the likes of Cziffra and put up with his overdrive, or a non liszt specialist such as Brendel, rather then listen to rose's dead interpretations. Its amazing this guy "captivated" audiences in the Busoni competition. His consolations were better, but lacked melodic direction (but lets face it, who can beat Horowitz playing the E major?) and his Christmas Tree was average at best. (It were those tracks that made me realize this guy actually does have some sort of musical personality) Always an enigma, the legends take a good performer to play with outstanding effect. Rose plays to slow and if I didnt know what each piece was about, i wouldnt have had the first clue by his non discriptive playing. These 2 numbers are played best when the performer does not give into Liszt's bombastic overtones, however i was hoping Rose would somewhat "let loose" at some point, i was just bored. St. Francois was truely drowning rather then walking.
Devoted Liszt fans: buy this one only for the content and use it as a resource, considering the amount you get, its a fair price, but expect it to sit on the shelf for good after a first listen.
