Duyet Do.......2004-11-20
The sound quality is so poor that it basically ruins the performance. After listening to Gunter Wand's second rendering of this symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic, I would be a liar to give Steinberg's performance and the disk's engineers a thumb up. I am quite surprised of the poor quality of EMI's so-called binaural recording since they produced many much better monaural recordings from the same period. Buy this disk only if you are a serious Bruckner collector.
A fine Steinberg item for your delectation.......2000-07-12
Steinberg is in his element here, with fleet Bruckner and dramatic Strauss.
Steinberg knows that there are two ways to do Bruckner: slow or fast, it doesn't matter as long as everything is kept in relative proportion. Steinberg's fast, off on a hunt through the Austrian countryside, through the woods, through the lakelands and villages. The Fourth is Bruckner's "Pastoral" symphony, and Steinberg's beautifully-realized outdoorsiness makes this one of the most descriptive performances of the work. Steinberg knows that Bruckner was often NOT in church.
He also knows that Strauss was NEVER in church, and thus comes a Transfiguration of noble proportion, of gloss and color, of dramatic thrust and conviciton. The Pittsburgh Symphony is extraordinary covering itself with glory as it surrenders itself to Steinberg's every nuance. Listening to this performance again after many years, I have to say I've never heard anything by Strauss lavished with such loving direction and dedication.
So why just four stars after all this hoo-ha? The Bruckner is about as good as you can get (despite some strange editorial assumptions), but the Strauss needs the supplementation of the kaliedoscopic Dorati from Minneapolis or, later, Detroit. Dorati's extra originality and effort in sorting out all the complexities, compositional and emotional, in a way we can readily absorb, leads us up to a thrilling transfiguration that has to be heard to be believed.
All told, this is an excellent reissue and one you should consider seriously.

A golden and diamantine collection! .......2006-03-10
This is a very fortunate and treasured sets of historical performances, made with this First Order Orchestra due the celebration of its 150th Anniversary.
When Leonard Bernstein crossed over the Atlantic Ocean to record these works, a new and powerful inspiration loaded his spirit and intellect. The Haydn `s 102 is top notch, enhancing to my mind his famous recorded set with New York Philharmonic. The Ravel Piano Concerto is extraordinarily showy and sensual; vitality and inventive freshness permeate this curious recordings.
Kraus gave one of the milestone performances of Beethoven `s Mass, while Karl Bohm will surprise you with the admirable reading of Arnold Schoenberg' s Pelleas ever made. Sumptuous phrasing and expansive virtuosity of this Orchestra is carved in relief, but Richard Strauss' Tod und Verklärung Op. 24 will leave you absolutely astonished.
Fürtwangler gave us one his most reminded versions of Leonore III as well his notable version of Brahms Second.
Bruckner 's Eighth finds in Karajan a good choice, in spite of the fact Mr. K is far to be my favorite conductor.
The jewel of the crown is the enraptured Mahler ' s Fourth conducted by Bruno Walter in a live performance in 1955.
In sum, the undeniable relevance of these legendary recordings are far beyond all descriptive adjectives. Go for this jeweled album. You will listen it over and over due its majestic realization and historic transcendence.
