The best modern instrument performances I have heard.......2007-03-26

I think with the Brandenbergs, the deciding factor on which set to buy is whether you prefer modern instruments or period instruments. There are probably more great period instrument recordings (Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert is my personal favorite) to choose from than modern instrument recordings, but I think this is the best available modern instrument recording. You pretty much cannot go wrong with anything by Marriner and the ASMF, but this is truly one of their better recordings and has been for a number of years. There may be others out there just as good, but I doubt if you will find any better.

Easy to Enjoy.......2006-11-25

I am not a musician nor can I identify Bach's Brandenburg Concerto number one from number five. However, I am an avid listener and do enjoy classical music. I know how good the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is and what a great conductor Sir Neville Marriner is. Most of all, I can identify a real bargain when I see one and this CD qualifies as a great bargain.

Bach's concertos are relaxing and very enjoyable. The Academy performs under the sure hand of Sir Marriner at the highest level. Each CD is just over an hour, the sound is clear and as Gramophone says "these performances are easy to enjoy".

This review refers to both the CD for concertos Nos. 1-4 and the CD for concertos Nos. 5 & & with Orchestral Suite No. 1.

Rediscovery of some favorites.......2006-08-20

I had forgotten how delightful it is to hear these pieces in their entirety! Every now and then I'd hear excerpts on the radio, etc., but not the whole work. These are marvelous examples of the best J.S. Bach had to offer in a wonderful set of recordings by Sir Neville Mariner and the band.

Boston Baroque and Martin Pearlman recorded a splendid set of the Brandenburg Concertos on period instruments in 1993 and 1994. Made entirely in the US, these snappy, crisply articulated, and fluent performances rely heavily on the talents of violinist Daniel Stepner (who doubles as one of the two solo violists in Concerto No. 6). Among the highlights are the joyous finale to Concerto No. 4 and the superb cembalo cadenza in No. 5, played by Pearlman. I am just knocked out by Boston Baroque's performances and the technical perfection of their recordings. This music is still very much alive in these good hands. If you like Bach and you have a decent sound system, you'll play this one for your friends.

posthorn problems.......2006-09-29

the telarc recording is full and detailed as would be expected, but the posthorn player botches a lot of lines, or at least plays them with totally hamfisted phrasing. of course it's probably tough on an older instrument but the end result is that it distracted me from what was probably an otherwise excellent recording.

He wrote this piece in Köthen 24.3.1721 near the capital Berlin. this work was dedicated to Count Christian Von Brandenburg.
The six Concertos are bizarre dimension from Bach. Because the concertos 1, 3, 5 are dance-menuett sätze. The concertos 2, 4, 6 are fugue forms. The concerto 5 is very special because the Cemballo/Hapsichord was represented or played in a solo instrument. this might be the oldest piano concert in the music history.

PS: this CD is only dedicated to the intelligent music listeners! not to the crappy fans who love Britney Spears or Tina Alquiera.....

A Great Set.......2005-03-17

These are the best versions of the Brandenburgs I have heard. The tempos are quick, as baroque tempos should be, the music sounds light, as baroque music should, and the period instruments make the recording all the more "authentic." I even recommend this over Pinnock and the English Concert's version. Sound quality is very good. Highly recommended.

Great Pair of CDs.......2004-07-14

I don't know much about classical music, but I must say that these CD's are great. I love the music and the production quality is perfect. I've heard the same pieces preformed by other groups and these CD's always sound far better to me.

An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13

I originally purchased this disc as an EMI Classics Red Line release (I think I paid $5.99 for it). It was a steal then, and remains so today on the Seraphin line (simple a reissue of the same EMI Red Line release).

Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).

This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.

This is a great feel-good record. Music to reign by.

The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

This CD is just a delight. If you enjoy Baroque, you will find this CD one of your favorites. It has a pleasant register and a lightness that is a pleasure to any ear. An excellent value.

Another five-star review.......2007-03-27

I first heard this recording when I got it out of the library and found it so incredible that I had to buy it for myself. The sound is warm, not tinny like the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (the other recording I have, which I've never been terribly fond of), and very expressive. I cannot add any technical comments to the other reviews already written, but I can say that I agree that Trevor Pinnock and Simon Standage are a Baroque musical force to be reckoned with.

A wonderful and lifting experience.......2007-03-02

For me the only lacks in here are just for personal tastes: I find the fifth and sixth concertos a bit boring. On the other hand I've got already six different versions of these Brandenburg and this is which I like the most. The sound is (IMPRESSIVE) crystal clear and is played not only flawless, but with such devotion and passion that I almost fell on my knees the first time I listened to it.
I also recomend the version of Reinhard Goebel guiding the Música Antiqua Köln: it's awsome with its fabolous recreation of the baroque sounds.
If you like Bach and if you had the I Musici version of these Concertos, throw them away and get this Pinnock's: you won't regret a bit and you will be skyrocketed to Heaven.

Outstanding period performances.......2007-02-21

These recordings are excellent. Pinnock's Brandenburg concertos remain the standard for period instruments, offering exceptional musicianship and an authentic rendition. The Overtures are also great, although I greatly prefer the readings of Reinhard Goebel and Musica Antiqua Koln to these. Still, as a low-priced compilation of Bach's most popular orchestral works, this is an excellent set, and you could do much worse. Those who are new to classical music will find this set to be a great starting point.
In spite of the fact that the Brandeburg concertos were recorded using early digital technology, the intimate setting of these small ensembles neutralizes many of the problems of tinny, hollow sound that plagued the digital format in its early years. As for the Orchestral Suites, these were recorded using analog technology and sound fantastic.
These recordings are integral for those who prefer period instrument performances, and this is one of the great pioneering period instrument ensembles out there. Recommended.

Good Recordings!.......2007-01-15

In my opinion this set of recordings is very good. I study music and I have no complaints about how they were done. If you are looking for a very sufficient set of recordings for these works, this is definatly the set.

Top Notch Brandenburg.......2007-01-07

There are tons of Brandenburg recordings out there. How they stack up, of course, is a matter of personal taste. But having listened to many, this one stands out. It's crisp, fresh, and brings out the power of the music. In far too many renditions of Bach, much gets lots. Not so here. Certainly better technology has made things easier over the years. We can hear what might have been muffled in the past. But more than that, this interpretation makes the work come alive. Well done Trevor Pinnock.

The recording does not have the depth of sound that I was seeking. The selections are okay but could be better--however, this is only a preference. I more or less use the album as background music/noise; do not confuse Telemann with poor music but the recording, yes.

In his day, George Philip Telemann was more popular than Bach. But, as a Telemann fan, I GREATLY enjoy this CD. Additionally, I especially like flutes and violins. The CD includes one of Telemann's best pieces, Suite in A minor for Flute (Suite a-moll) which is a wonderful delight. Telemann also composed concertos for trumpet and one is included here as well. If you haven't tried Telemann, this CD would be a good bet. It's quite versatile too--can be just listened to, used as background music, meditated to, etc.

Fine Collection of Baroque Concertos.......2004-02-16

Telemann certainly was a prolific composer. For some forty-six years he composed much for both church and court.

Composing so much, he understood well the capabilities of each instrument and composed much for each. Here, for flute, oboe and trumpet, as well as strings.

The trio for oboes is especially charming.

I really enjoyed this CD because I couldn't find the Suite in a minor by Telemann, until now. A beautiful Rejouissance I must say. I would love to hear longer samples of all the classical music, because I appreciate it so much.

If you are to buy only 1 CD for Brass Enemble, Get this! It captured the BEST of the Candian Brass (one of the top brass enemble in the world). It has all the nice tunes, e.g. Four Seasons, Cannon in D, etc. Strongly recommended.

Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

Beyond Bravo - Vivaldi's spirit revived........2007-04-04

Where to start?
Well...

First of all, it's the Venice Baroque Orchestra.
Starting from the first track, I was instantly astounded. The Sinfonia in C is such and exciting piece, the first movement full of sparks of brilliance -from crisp violin lines to the pounding basso continuo rythym.

This group of baroque masters can portray so much movement and emotion through concertos such as the g minor 157 and 156 while still amusing the listener through excellent, authentic baroque playing.

Throughout this whole performance of 12 concerti and sinfonie, the listener might as well believe that they have been teleported to 18th century Italy, watching Vivaldi's virtuosos of his Ospedale della Pieta (an orphanage where Vivaldi spent a majority of his life, transforming orphan girls into virtuosa violinists).

Yes, Vivaldi must be rejoicing in his grave. I'm sure he rarely does. The Venice Baroque Orchestra's performance of these twelve pieces strongly puts themselves in a very high tier of recordings. Hundreds and hundreds of Vivaldi recordings have been recorded. This particular CD deserves special attention not only to the baroque lover but also to the general music listener.

I guarantee that the listener will grow to appreciate baroque music, Vivaldi music in this case, so much that they'd be willing to listen to more recordings by this orchestra under the direction of Andrea Marcon.

Look, the other three reviews gave them 5 stars too.

I'm just another listener who, just like the other three, is so grateful to have the opportunity to listen to such a fine group of musicians who strongly give Vivaldi a distinguish style, so unique from the rest of the baroque composers of his time.

36 tracks of beautiful music. At times, Vivaldi's concertos can sound similar to each other. The conducting style is rich and vibrant. It's worth getting as a companion piece to the previous Vivaldi release from DG by Giuliano Carmignola.

This disc is perfectly brilliant, and I can't recommend it strongly enough. Strictly speaking, only two of the four works given here are concertos, the other two being standard orchestral pieces with prominent work for the horns. Haydn's is one of his early symphonies from his Esterhazy period featuring also solos for cello and violin in its slow movement and a long finale consisting of a set of variations in a kind of gavotte rhythm giving the spotlight to various other members of the orchestra, notably flute and viola da gamba. The Telemann `overture' is a suite in nine movements, along the lines of Handel's Water Music or Fireworks Music but with more pictorial and representational elements. The contribution from Handel himself is a short introduction and andante, suggestive of a formal occasion and with the introduction using material familiar from the Fireworks Music.

The real cracker is Schumann's short concerto, in the usual 3-movement layout. This was described by Tovey as nearly unplayable, but today's virtuosi seem to be afraid of nothing. They even restore some high notes that Schumann revised out of the score, and what a thrilling effect they make. The four soloists are the lead horn-players, American by nationality, in various European orchestras, and they cover themselves with distinction from start to finish. Four virtuoso horn solos naturally take the limelight off the orchestra, but the Sinfonia Varsovia acquit themselves splendidly, particularly in the Haydn symphony where the treatment of the instruments is more democratic and all sections of the band get their chance to shine.

The recording, from Warsaw in 2003, is excellent, and the liner-note, although brief, is helpful and informative, although I would have been glad to be told more about the Handel piece. There are also horn parts of startling difficulty in two of Handel's Concerti a Due Cori, and it would have been interesting to know how he managed to find players of this calibre. It is unusual for him to over-tax his English orchestral players, no doubt for sound reasons of experience, and he surely must have felt a high degree of confidence to write in this way for horns.

As usual with Naxos, there are potted biographies of the soloists and the conductor plus a short history of the orchestra. Also as usual, I wish to praise Naxos in the strongest terms for the imagination and flair they dependably display in finding unfamiliar music of high quality, making a superb job of the production of it, and giving it to us at such a modest cost - apart from anything else there is a full hour and a quarter of music here. I make no apology for constantly repeating this sentiment, indeed I only hope I shall still be doing just that for a good few years to come.

A wonderful sound........2006-03-24

This CD recalls the reason I had my daughter play the horn in school. The horn is one of the most important and lovliest instruments in an orchestra. Four is that much better.

As a long time horn player and fan of Naxos, this is the perfect recording for those music lovers who don't know the richness of the four-horn literature. It it indeed limited when compared to most other interumental ensembles, such as a string quartet, but this is the best and most accessible recording on the market to introduce neophytes to this sonic wonderland. The playing is exceptional, as the AHQ is a solid, professional, touring outfit, the balances fine, the interpretations solid, and above all FUN. Buy it. Enjoy it. Encourage your friends and children to learn to play the horn, if they dare and want to play like this.

This premiere recording of six Vivaldi concertos is full of surprises. The works are entirely unknown because, unlike his other compositions, they were written not for publication but for substantial private commissions from wealthy patrons. Dating from his most mature years, they exhibit a style very different from his earlier concertos, which often sound almost mass-produced. Though they are still cast in the customary three movements and are full of the usual sequences, they are more unpredictable, dramatic, and daring; adventurous in form, harmony, and texture; with sudden contrasts of mood, character, and expression. The slow movements are meltingly beautiful, but no two concertos are alike, either in detail or overall effect. Some movements hardly seem to hang together; they appear to consist of collages of motives, punctuated by bursts of virtuosity.

The performance is equally unconventional. Giuliano Carmignola, as he demonstrated on his previous Vivaldi recording, is a formidable virtuoso who projects spontaneity, vitality, and expressiveness. In solo parts bristling with runs, often into the highest register, trills, double stops, and arpeggios, he displays breathtaking speed and facility, total command of every style of bowing and articulation, and a ravishing, powerful, infinitely variable tone. Except for the harpsichord, the orchestral instruments, tuned to normal pitch, hardly sound Baroque--their tone is full-blooded and varied. By using two harpsichords and a lute, conductor Andrea Marcon achieves percussive effects sometimes resembling gunshots, and the playing is by turns brilliant, lyrical, and exciting. --Edith Eisler

A Must Have.......2004-10-25

This cd, as well as Carmignola and the VBO's version of the four seasons (and 3 other perviously unrecorded late violin concertos) and their 2002 cd (mint green cd) of Vivaldi Late violin concertos are a must have for any fan of classical music or the violin.
The material here is first rate--these are concertos written late in Vivaldi's career for purposes that did not require the satisfaction of a mass audiance. Vivaldi was not after popularity in this style. The solo violin part is very difficult even by current standards, requiring not only pure virtuosity, but also a massive expressive palette. Carmignola and the Venice Baroque orchestra are the perfect preformers to bring this deep and inovative music to life. Carmignola has a huge expressive palette to draw on, and will impress you with the variety of coloring he can achive. He loves to juxtapose the smooth with the jagged, the husky with the sparkling. His expressive interpretations so match Vivaldi's intent in the music that it is almost as if Vivaldi has sprung to life, picked up his violin and started playing his favorite works. His upper range sparkles and sings, his lower range groans and growls. This is great violin playing by any standard; baroque, modern, academic, recreational, artistic, intellectual... Listen to the artiuclation and what Carmignola does with his bow. The Venice Baroque Orchestra is not far behind this standard. Their emoting covers the range Vivaldi requires--which is huge, and the violins shine. This is a very tight group with a transparent sound-- all the parts blend into a whole but are at any moment audible as their own entities. The continuo is entertaining and effective without being distracting. I espesially like the archlute playing with adds great touches. The orchestra is not without fault, though. The violas and espesially the cellos and violone (double bass viol) need to play out more. In the first mvt. of the Bflat concerto the cellos play a strange and hypnotic ritornello melody, but we often miss it because the cellos don't play out and the high strings cover too well with their long tones. This moment stands out as a disappointment, but tutti sections are plagued by a weak bass throughout the cd. The continuo (during solos) cello, however, is a good compliment to the violin.
And just listen to these concertos, which stand with any violin composer in the literature! There is the opening mvt of the cd, in which the orchestra churns and drives wild rythms and the bass explodes, but the soloist brings us to the silken shimmer of a utopian lake, calm yet unlimitedly complex in it's motion and mood. The D major concerto is a celebration of life and it's andante is soothing yet awing in it's lyrical invention. The 1st mvt. of the e minor concerto chills the bones and remindes me of a bleak winter day. It was probibly one of Vivaldi's last works and you can sence a bitterness and a cold frailty still punctuated by firey fits (this is the red priest after all). Yet it's an optimistic work in it's cleverness with innovative and disconcerting waves of melodic cells. The F major concerto is a rustc veiw, bold and rough, yet sublime, too. The Bflat concerto is shrouded in mystery from the opening measures, although the soloist brings us out of the fogs and into a clearer yet still perplexing landscape. The jovial 3rd mvt. is a more confidant place dappled by sun. The 1st mvt. of the C rv.191 concerto is shocking in its audacious contrasts. Vivaldi versus smooth melody with angular leaps in the solos and adds a tradmark molto perpetuo that gurgles like a brook. The slow mvt is meditative and content. The 3rd mvt. brings us to a jittry conclusion full of humor and optimism-- it shivers and tumbles along like a playful act of nature.
If you don't own this cd, you should add it to your collection. Along with it's two companions it will enrich you musical life.

I got to see Carmignola and the VBO perform in Chicago a couple of months ago. Immediately afterwards I got this CD. These guys are great - a really exciting Baroque group. Carmignola was also quite entertaining during the concert, foot-stomping and all.

A MUST for all Vivaldi fans.......2002-09-03

Late Vivaldi concerti are comparative rarities because the composer strictly limited manuscript publication, hence it's only now people are finally getting around to recording them. They are of very high quality and demonstrate Vivaldi developing a new style of composing, just as late Beethoven differs from his middle and early periods. The performances and recording are superb. I have over 80 Vivaldi CDs, and this is one of my very favorites.

These are a few of the best pieces out of all the Vivaldi I have listened to. They are hardly ever boring and there is always something going on in them. I hope you buy this album becaue i know you will like it.
