I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Quite the CD.......2001-04-17

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.

And comrades, let me say that you can't call yourself a member of the human race until you've heard Wynton Marsalis' performance of JB Arban's "Variations of Carnival of Venice." It's literally perfect. Buy this today.

Good, but not the best methods for bass trombonists.......2007-07-05

After listening to the excerpts, I recognized Jeffrey Reynolds' perspective. He is an experienced player, but some of his advice is not as practical as it seems. For the Franck excerpt, common orchestral practice is to play the f-sharp as written: it is an applicable range study and should be kept intact. The Schumann excerpt is not played as written also, and should be taken literally in the context that it was written. Mr. Reynolds' approach to Wagner is interesting, especially to Die Walkure. It's not for everyone, but it may be beneficial to some. The Kodaly is well presented, as well as the Mahler, Berg, and Strauss excerpts. All things considered, it is a decent aide for study, but should not be seen as a "this is how it must be done" collection of excerpts.

Mulcahy Rocks, Reynolds is Hilarious!.......2006-10-26

Okay, for anyone seriously interested in what NOT to do in an audition, make sure to listen to Reynolds on this disc. There's a reason this CD is infamous, and he's the reason. Even his advice is pretty awful. Take part of the D Major down an octave because the commitee won't notice? Hah! That kills me every time.

Mulcahy rocks on this, though. Just listen to the VAlhalla theme and tell me he's not a monster.

Then, go back and listen to Reynolds play Ein Heldenleben with 'oblique intonation' and 'questionable sound' and roll on the floor for a while.

Very Helpful.......2006-05-27

This CD was very helpful for me, a student bass trombonist. The CD enables you to not only hear the exerpt, but also listen to what the performer says about it and how it should be played. Mr. Reynolds, as well as Mr. Mulcahy played the exerpts beautifully.

A perfecrt resource...almost!.......2000-08-02

The Orchestra Pro series are a very useful tool to student musicians trying to get a grasp on how the major symphonic excerpts should be played. More useful, however is the spoken commentary, which resembles a one on one lesson with the performer. The bass trumpet and tenor tuba excerpts are played beautifully by Mulcahy. The bass trombone playing or Reynolds often leaves the listener wondering if he could not have done a slightly better job on some of the excerpts. All in all this CD is a great resource for those trying to get their foot in the door of the orchestral music scene.

How do you describe perfection? George Szell's legacy in Cleveland emphasized the great classical and Romantic symphonic repertoire, with relatively few forays into more modern music. But no orchestra ever played these 20th-century masterpieces with more glitter and precision, and the Prokofiev/Kodaly works, when first issued together on LP, immediately became the standard by which all other performances are measured. In fact they still are, and at budget price, not only do they cost less than they did when they were first recorded, you get a spectacular Pictures thrown in as a bonus. It may not be rational from a marketing point of view to sell your best records at ever-lower prices, but consumers can only rejoice. --David Hurwitz

Artful pictures, disappointment elsewhere.......2004-09-22

I bought this wanting the two shorter suites, not Mussorgsky's stroll through a gallery. Having heard it, I would argue exactly the opposite of the other critics toward this CD.

For me, this recording of "Pictures At An Exhibition" is one of the best I've ever heard while the "Hary Janos" and "Lt. Kije" suites suffer from Szell's icy perfectionism and lack of personal involvement.

For me, the Mussorgsky is the treasure on this CD. While not projecting the dramatic warhorse Karajan, Muti and others created on LP and CD, Szell takes a rare view of the music, forging artful sound pictures from the skilled players of his orchestra. Every picture is vividly presented as an aural painting leading to an organic whole rare for this music.

While the canvass of the Great Gate of Kiev lacks some of the drama others bring to it, the totality of the performance projects humanity, art and dignity in equal measure. Aside from his wonderful Hadyn "London" symphony recordings, this is one of the most human or all George Szell-led performances on CD.

The two lesser suites on this CD are extremely well-played and recorded well for the period. The "Hary Janos" suite, in particular, is probably among the better-played accounts of this strange unfamiliar music.

The "Lt. Kije" music, that famous Prokofiev suite based on a mythical Russian television figure, pales when played beside the account by Ormandy, whose CD was recorded in a similar era by another great American orchestra and costs about the same.

The ultra-perfect playing of the Cleveland Orchestra more than makes up for any sonic shortcomings in this issue. Having said that, this is not a DDD recording and will not be mistaken for one. But with a list price of less than $7 and being regularly available from Amazon.com for $3 or $4 used, the price/value index is exceedingly high for anyone seeking this particular combination.

Dissapointing sound and interpretation.......2004-06-05

the Karajan from 66 is in all department a more characterful interpretation...Szell in the Pictures is pedantic and the opening of the Great Kiev is dull....Leibovitz did a wonderful recording as well with the Royal Philharmonic. The Kodaly is naturally much better with some very delicious playing...all in all an uneven offering.

Some disappointments, but the price is right........2003-09-05

This performance of Pictures at an Exhibition is uninspired at best. Some of Ravel's beautifully orchestrated material is taken much too lightly by Szell, perhaps because the work is such a warhorse of orchestral repertoire. The Promenade and the Great Gate at Kiev, especially, lack any semblance of excitement. There are much better recordings available.

On the other hand, I very much enjoy this recording of the Hary Janos Suite, although the fifth movement is rushed through and the first movement is a bit unconvincing. The Prokofiev sounds quite good, but, as it has been previously noted, suffers from outdated recording technology. Nevertheless I highly recommend the second half of this CD.

Szell-Kodaly-Janos: Tops.......2001-12-23

Forget the one outlier below, it's a five. Anyhow, if you really want to hear Pictures, do the Richter piano from Sofia (1958). Szell's Harry Janos is, like so much of his other stuff, absolutely tops, and the piece reaches its full delight here.

Good, but I politely do not concur.......2001-07-19

OK, I realize that this will be an unpopular viewpoint compared to those espoused by the others here. But I just don't think Szell captures what Pictures at an Exhibition is about. Take the opening- everybody knows that- it is supposed to be majestic and grand, the brass sound should overwhelm you. Here, it doesn't. Szell just plows through it- it's like a metronome is conducting. Sometimes this is appropriate. Here, it is not. This is how I feel about most of the Pictures recording here- it is plowed through at a breakneck pace, almost like each movement is just desperate to get to the next. The individual beauty of some of the spectacular moments in the piece are missed at the expense of getting to the next spectacular moment.

This said, I must agree that the Kodaly and the Prokofiev are superb for the bargain price. Especially the Kodaly. The Prokofiev suffers more from the outdated recording technology than from the performance- some of those moments are just dying for greater recording clarity at extreme dynamic ranges.

The price, however, is undeniably right, and if you are looking for a bargain than this is for you. I would go no where near the word "definetive" though, except perhaps with the Kodaly. But this is just my opinion.

Rare stuff, but what?.......2007-02-05

The engineers pumped up the bass to thunderous levels, likewise boosting the treble to shrillness. These can be corrected by equalizing. But worse, they added dynamic stretching, making the soft parts far too contrasting with the loud -- Toscanini doesn't need this kind of help, and it can't be adjusted in playback. They also overdid the surface noise removal, so that the sound is airless and no room ambience is left.
On the positive side, some performances are available nowhere else, and occasionally offer the live versions of pieces recorded in the studio a day or so later, making for extremely interesting comparisons.

John Browning is superb.......2001-09-10

This CD was mistakenly labeled on Amazon to emphasize the Lt. Kije Suite as the principle piece on this disc. The cover of this CD prominently features a young John Browning. The reason I bought this CD was to have John Browning's scintillating performances of Prokofiev 3rd piano concerto and Ravel's Left Hand Concerto.

Browning's recording of Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand is preferable to the other recording in my CD collection, Pascal Roge's fine digital account. Browning and Leinsdorf have more momentum and better focus than Roge and Dutoit.

I own several performances of Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto (Argerich, Browning, Cliburn, Janis/ Kondrashin, Kapell/Dorati, Kapell/ Stokowski, Krainev). These are outstanding, with special emphasis on Kapell/ Dorati, Argerich, Browning, and Janis/ Kondrashin. Browning's recording was the first I had ever heard, and defined the piece for me. He and Leinsdorf were an excellent partnership for Prokofiev.

The remastered recordings sound fresh, bright and spacious. It is unfortunate that it seems to have been withdrawn from the catalogue. I urge EMI to bring it back.

Great music for the car or the house.......2007-07-12

I picked up this 4-disc set from CostCo years ago for about $[...]. I immediately realized this was a great buy. Together, the four discs provide a good sampling of classical music from the Baroque period to the mid Romance period; basically the 1700s and 1800's. The set leaves out the most famous pieces, such as Beethoven's 9th, Mozart's operas, and the ballets by Tchaikovsky. Instead, it has less-famous but still popular works such as pieces of Mozart's symphonies, Pictures at an Exhibition, and Dvorak's Slavonic Dances. The set has pieces from dozens of composers from all of Europe, East and West. The sound quality is great, and each CD has over an hour of music. Best of all, the musical pieces are complete, no shortened excerpts. All in all, a great set for the price.
