Customer Reviews:
Uninteresting reading ot the concerto.......2007-03-01
There is nothing muscular about this piece like that of a Richter performance which captures my attention. I wouldnt say it is tame but it has little personality which brings to mind the genius of Brahms. It is all correctly played but has no weight or drama.
Eloquent refinement! .......2006-03-20
Horacio Gutierrez is recognized pianist all over the world. His style is an accurate balance between refinement, expressiveness and vibrant intensity.
This is a very hard to play Concert. There are many obstacles to surpass along the score. It demands from the player a complete involvement, it 's a passionate, romantic, lyric and meditative musical canvas that anticipates visibly the autumnal character of his famous Fourth Symphony. Gutierrez possesses a fabulous technique and the necessary imagination to execute the lucidness and adequate flexibility in phrasing.
Many pianists have found his own Waterloo at the moment to play this exigent Concert. Many of them are accustomed to play Brahms as if he was only a simple appendix of the Romantic Schumann. The work presents passages that must be played with a previous mind conception. As a matter of fact, I think we are on front of the last Romantic Concerto of the XIX Century; I mean this special fact is not only the last stage of an Artistic Movement; besides it constitutes the transition between two musical currents; and somehow the construction and destruction of certain previous patterns, due every new expression demands the destruction of the previous one.
The conception of late Romanticism must not be understood as embossment or reaffirmation but the beginning of new times to come. That would be extremely to think about at that historical moment, but keeping in mind the elapsed time, this piece should express the precognition and future anguish for the time to come. That means the future must consider itself as a simple continuation of the present, and not as the New Illusion of the progress.
Gutierrez plays this superb work keeping in mind the previous statement. You can feel a certain Mahlerian anguish, without losing the romantic approach.
Go for this recording. Absolutely gratifying.
There is better.......2004-04-17
This is not a bad performance of the Brahms concerto, but it's nothing very special either. I mean, the finest ever? Come on. Gutierrez is a solid pianist but not one who does anything particularly interesting, and the same can be said about Previn's conducting. For a modern performance that uses a similar approach to this one but with far more success, try Kovacevich/Davis. Among historic performances, Schnabel/Boult, Solomon/Dobrowen and Fischer/Furtwangler are mandatory listening too.
The finest performance I've heard........2002-07-16
Horacio Gutierrez has a special ability to give beautiful performances of the big virtuoso piano concertos of the Romantic era. Although his virtuosity is staggering, it is matched by his artistic sensitivity. His performance of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 is simply gorgeous, surpassing every other performance I've ever heard -- including the legendary performance by Serkin and Szell. I beg you to get this superb recording.

Customer Reviews:
Early late Karajan.......2007-04-03
The producer (Walter Legge?) could have found a better partner for Hans Richter-Haaser but of course, when this recording was made, Herbert von Karajan was the Wunderkind among conductors and the darling of EMI.
Richter-Haaser plays in a solid, Old World manner. That in itself is not bad; too many pianists play Brahms 2 as a Lisztian virtuoso showpiece. But pair him up with Herbert von Karajan on this particular day, and the result is unremarkable...except that here is the relatively early Karajan, sounding like late Karajan: smooth, polished, and shorn of all the edges that give music its personality and commitment. This one's boring.
At the time this recording was made, EMI was still noncommittal about the role of Klemperer in its future plans, not seeing how dominant he would become; I can't help thinking that a Richter-Haaser/Klemperer pairing may have created much more than what we got with Karajan, but it wasn't to be. Too bad; today we have no commercial recordings of Klemperer in the Brahms piano concerti; planned recordings with Arrau had to be cancelled due to Klemperer's illness, so all we have is some airchecks of broadcast performances of Concerto #2 with Géza Anda, sporadically available though sometimes difficult to get; and with Ashkenazy, currently unavailable at all.
Go for the piano concerto; the "Haydn" is just filler.......2004-03-02
Hans Richter Haaser was one of the great old school pianists of the '50s and early '60s. He excelled in some of the warhorses of the mid-19th century repertoire. And that's where he stayed. You wouldn't necessarily want him for Bartok (!!) or for Shostakovich, but he was great with Brahms and Beethoven.
The recording of the Brahms #2 is a gem, although a bit dated. I take the point from the previous reviewer that Richter Haaser was eclipsed in intensity and bravura by the Serkins, Gilels, and others. However, in this particular recording, I believe his eloquence of phrasing betters most other comers (and I've heard them all.)This is a glowing, old school rendition. Sound is acceptable, not tremendous, so if you need clean sonics and pyrotechnics there are better versions. However, I'll stick with this one.
In a similar vein, Testament has just released Richter-Haaser doing Beethoven's 4th and 5th piano concerti.....same feel.
There ought to be a moratorium on using Haydn variations for filler. This rendition is nothing special; HVK did better himself later in life. If you don't have these AND you haven't heard Richter-Haaser, then you get a bonus.
Beautiful Brahms, But..........2003-08-15
I got this CD from Amazon.com and seemingly purchased the last one. This was the final title I needed in the EMI "Karajan Edition" series, which I have collected because I am a big fan of the conductor. Not to mention that the works featured here, Variations on a Theme by Haydn and the 2nd Piano Concerto, are my favorites by Brahms, along with the 3rd and 4th Symphonies. So if I like Herbie and these pieces, what's with the four star rating? Well, it's the little things that bug me about this disc. First, note to all CD manufacturers: Never put a "Variations" (whether it's this one or Rachmaninov's Paganini Variations) first on a disc with a Piano Concerto. There is nothing more annoying than having to track through all those Variations to get to the bread and butter performance, the Concerto! Second, while I love the Haydn Variations, particularly Variation I, Karajan tries to make it sound like an adventure in hi-fi, and there is way too much resonance in the lower registers. Save the orchestral showpiece performances for Also Sprach Zarathustra! Third, there is a noticeable splice during the transition from the solo piano part to the orchestral entrance in the first movement of the Concerto. Surely the engineers could have done better. Fourth and lastly, while Hans Richter-Haaser performs admirably on piano, he certainly doesn't bring as much to the work as do Fleisher, Gilels, Katchen, or Serkin. With all those negative critiques you'd think I hate this disc. Sure there are better buys, but for an aspiring collector such as myself, recordings like this are surprisingly essential despite their deficiencies.
