If this isn't just about the classiest recording ever made, then I don't now what is. In David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich we have the two of the very greatest Russian string players in the world, friends and colleagues (at the Moscow Conservatory) moreover. Then there's György Szell, in many respects the greatest conductor of his age, at the helm of the orchestra he raised to the heights of perfection--at the time of this recording, there was no one who could match Cleveland for sheer unanimity of ensemble. And finally there's Brahms's last and greatest concerto (coupled with one of Beethoven's most intriguing musical experiments), a piece all three of them loved dearly. What else is there to say? If you haven't put this disc in your shopping basket yet, there's no hope for you. --David Hurwitz

The typical concerto features just one solo instrument with orchestra; these otherwise very different concertos are both mavericks of a sort, the Beethoven calling for solo violin, cello and piano, the Brahms requiring cello and violin. In both cases, the effect is to offer expanded possibilities for the concerto form, sounding at times like chamber music accompanied by orchestra. This disc, a compilation of older material from two previous recordings made in 1969 and 1970, has been remastered and reissued; it features three grand masters of their instruments, two fine orchestras, and a pair of famous conductors. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Among the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, these two have always been stepchildren. One reason is their extreme difficulty; both composers were pianists, so Beethoven wrote an idiomatic part only for the piano. Brahms's friend Joseph Joachim offered advice for the violin concerto, but not for the Double Concerto, which was written as a peace offering after a falling-out. The Beethoven Triple Concerto demands utmost virtuosity, as well as intimate teamwork among the soloists, and that is exactly what these three supreme masters of their instruments bring to it. Free--indeed unaware--of technical problems, they give it a joyful, sparkling lightness. The piano ripples, the cello sings gorgeously, the violin soars ecstatically, the tone is intoxicatingly beautiful. The Finale is wistful, charming, lyrical, gently humorous; the ending is a big joke, with the cello and piano rumbling in the bass, while the violin whistles forlornly in the dark until they all join together. The Brahms is grand, majestic, dreamy, radiant, triumphant; the slow movement warm as dark velvet, the Finale genial and relaxed. Though the orchestra never covers the soloists, it explodes in the tutti passages, especially in the Beethoven, so you might keep a finger on the volume control. --Edith Eisler

It is not for the names only.
I think it is a performance as Beethoven probably had in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful smooth rendition.......2007-04-26

There is something magical about this recording. It is difficult to describe the smooth full sound that this recording presents. I own other recordings of the Brahms and the Beethoven and at first thought it a little extravagent to own another but I am very pleased I bought it.

I knew this recording and I received what I was expecting. Delivery and condition was great. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven? Brahms? Karajan? Oistrakh? Richter? Rostropovich? Szell? On One CD? Talk About Star Power!.......2006-09-09

All those big names wouldn't mean a thing if the performances themselves were throw aways or showed little commitment, but that's hardly the case, this is probably the finest recordings of both works. Karajan and Richter for one had some rocky interpretative relations in their recording of Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto on DG. That was not a great record, where both musical giants pull and push to try and get their way. So yes, in some ways this Beethoven Triple Concerto presents even more challenges because there are four minds, four egos pitted together in one piece of music and that's not counting the greatest ego, Beethoven himself! Luckily everyone melds beautifully together, the three Russian masters are at their best, with Rostropovich a stand out and shining brightly. Meanwhile Karajan, the Austrian master conductor gives them his usual, grand, lush orchestral backdrop via the Berlin Philharmonic. This is warm-hearted, generous music-making between four fearsomely talented musicians.

The Brahms Double Concerto is just as fine, now we have the two string instrumentalists side by side. Oistrakh and Rostropovich communicate wonderfully together in this major Brahms piece. Szell backs them up every step of the way with his precise yet passionate conducting of the Cleveland Orchestra. The EMI recording sounds very good too in both works and the price is quite nice. An outstanding bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2006-01-30

The unbroken tradition of Russian string playing is well-represented on this disc. The Double Concerto is especially wonderful, even rapturous. The two players are beautifully meshed, and Szell and the Cleveland sound warm and emotive, which they sometimes did not, on records and "live". The sessions they recorded for EMI (including a wonderful Dvorak Eighth, far surpassing their recoridng for Masterworks), captured something that often was not well projected.

The remastering captures this warmth, with more brightness than my LP copy of the Brahms ever had, at least after the initial playings.

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered from Vinyl?.......2007-02-22

Unless my ears deceive me, the Beethoven was remastered from vinyl; in the quieter passages one can discern what sound like little clicks and pops. Even so, the sound is astonishgly good, on par with the best of that era.

5 out of 5 stars ACKTUNG!: BRAHMS' DOPPELKONZERT!..........2006-08-11

Beethoven's concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra is one of The Master's less notable works: it's not very big; it's in the heroic vein, but in a major key; its ideas are fairly plebian by Beethoven's usually exalted standards.

On the other hand, it is of marginal interest for its unusual combo format. Plus, the cello passages give us some idea how a cello concerto by Beethoven might have sounded. (Too bad he didn't give us a quintet for clarinet and string quartet, too!)

The real star here is Brahms' "double" concerto. This is a late great work--actually his last big orchestral work--and too infrenquently heard. The echt-Brahmsian slow middle movement is absolutely sublime; the thrilling and dashing first and third movements have their special charms as well: a supreme work of art.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect baton conducting anthological recordings!.......2005-11-17

The early and unfair departure of Ferenc Fricsay (49) not only left the world in an orphanage state but deprived it of one of the most perfect and extraordinary conductors of the XX Century. Mr. K would not have been director of the Berlin Philharmonic and the musical legacy of this sumptuous orchestra would have been absolutely different in a positive way. The wisdom, accuracy and genius of Fricsay would have permeated and even maintained the fevered temperament of Fürtwangler who previously had adverted in Fricsay, let 's say without preambles, his natural successor.

The tempos in the Triple Concert are slow, but loaded of fevered expressiveness and Beethoven ethos. Fricsay achieved supported by this outstanding trio and the grateful Orchestra an impeccable and magisterial recording. After you listen it you really feel a cathartic experience. Just the aristocratic phrasing of the last movement: it is amazing:

The Double Concerto is extraordinary too. Filled of charm, aristocratic profile and sumptuous musicality with opulence and distinctive flair. Class and musculature shake hands in this brilliant and unusual performance.

On the other hand think it over. If Deutsche Gramophone decided to include between the Great Recordings of its collection, that `s by itself, must mean something additional.

Go for this notable surprising and breathtaking performance. A true audiophile gem.

    Eloquent musicality, sublime grandness!

    5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Triple-Double Returns.......2005-03-27

Deutsche Grammophon seemed to have forgotten about its single disc "Originals" line recently, concentrating instead on reissuing titles via the "Original Masters" boxed sets and "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series (see my reviews). But all that has changed with a recent batch of ten titles, most of which simply are must buys. One of those essential discs is this one -- the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Brahms Double Concerto conducted by the great Ferenc Fricsay leading his beloved Berlin RSO. Fricsay is joined on the 1960 performance of the Triple by pianist Geza Anda, cellist Pierre Fournier and violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and on the 1961 Double again by Schneiderhan this time with cellist Janos Starker. This pairing appeared on CD previously in the early 1990s (and the Triple has been available on a variety of Beethoven comps), and it is a logical reissue to compete with the Karajan/Szell title in EMI's GROTC series. And as celebrated as the EMI title is, in many ways I prefer these recordings as the conductor, orchestra and soloists achieve far greater harmony and unison here, particularly in the Triple. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Oistrakh's accounts with Sargent & Galliera (on an EMI Import Double Forte), but overall this would have to be my first choice recommendation.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music, excellent performance,.......2001-10-25

First, the music performed here is simply magnificent - Beethoven's op. 61 and Brahms' op. 77 are some of the best violin concertos for my opinion. The other 2 concertos are great as well. There are many exciting, thrilling (and familiar!) moments all the way. No doubt you'll enjoy the music.

Then there's the performance - which is also great most of the way, with Stern giving a very worm and appealing violin sound and performance, and the accompaniment integrates just as well. I've heard a few other performances to most of the pieces here, and those from here are my favorites.

Finally, the recording is, surprisingly, very good. Although the original recordings are from the 60s, the sound is relatively clean and accurate, without too much "hiss", and it was transformed very well from analog to digital. There's even a bit of analog "warmth" in the sound (which doesn't affect its accuracy). I have brand new top quality recordings of most of the pieces, and yet I prefer the sound here due to this "warmth".

I bought this a few months ago and it has become one of my favorites. It's a wonderful CD to listen to. Both works are sublime, a unique combination of chamber and orchesteral music, but the Brahams is really special.

5 out of 5 stars Best Brahms Double Concerto.......1998-11-09

There are some excellent Brahms Double Concertos available, but I believe this is the very best. Oistrakh, Rostropovich, and Szell not only have the necessary technical skills (a formidable challenge with this piece) and the right style, but they play with obvious enjoyment and gusto, and maintain close rapport with each other. The recorded sound is superb.

The complement of Beethoven's Triple Concerto, in which Oistrakh and Rostropovich are joined by Richter with Karajan at the helm, is as good a version as you are likely to find. It is a jolly piece with a gorgeous slow movement, and the solo trio and conductor even find considerable humor, especially in the finale.
