About the Artist
Among the world's outstanding violinists is Aaron Rosand, whose great art has left audiences spellbound in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. He carries on the traditions of two distinguished schools of violin playing, having studied with Leon Sametini, a disciple of Eugene Ysaye, and Efrem Zimbalist, a student of Leopold Auer. An active performer since his recital debut at the Chicago Opera House at the age of nine, Rosand has appeared with the major American and European orchestras under such distinguished conductors as Rostropovich, Reiner, Kondrashin, Steinberg, Leinsdorf, Bernstein, Skrowaczewski, Slatkin, Maazel and Blomstedt. His many recordings, which have received critical acclaim, include the complete Beethoven, Brahms and Bach sonatas, numerous concertos, and 19th-century Romantic masterpieces. In addition to performing and recording, Mr. Rosand is currently The Dorothy Richard Starling Chair in Violin Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Product Description:

Aaron Rosand is one of our greatest violinists, whether you know him or not. Listening to him dig into these showpieces, you hear phenomenal facility, tremendous tonal quality and variety, and the musical impulse to make the lightweight music come alive. It's all quite exciting, especially if you have my taste for these delightful Spanish tidbits, some of the best violin encores ever composed. I'm pleased that this bargain reissue restores the correct name of Eileen Flissler, Rosand's late wife, who appeared under a pseudonym on the original LP issue because Vox didn't want Sarasate played by a female pianist. Figure that one out! --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Something New.......2007-06-01

I don't have much to say other than that this recording by master Rosand is the absolute definition of what "Art" really is. This great violinst is an artist of supreme ability and profound insight musically. I personally(and other people as well) believe that his recording of Carmen Fantasy is most likely one of his absolute greatest life-time achievements. I have purchased his wonderful set of Bach sonatas, and the only thing that is greater in my opinon is the recording of the Carmen Fantasy. There is so much feeling and emotion throughout the recording of that peice, that I am always moved and inspired by the sounds he manages to produce, and the feelings expressed in those sounds. This violinists abilities are on or past the level of the legendary Heifetz and all of the other great artists of the famed Auer lineage of Violin playing.

The only negative thing I have to say about it, is that I truly feel sorry for anyone who has not heard this disc, and the art that this great artist shares with us.

Thanks so Much, Mr. Rosand. Your the best!

5 out of 5 stars Stars are not enough.......2007-03-06

I really surprised that some reviewers have given less than 5 stars to this recording. What is expected actually? Is there a better Sarasate recording? Is there man / woman on earth, playing Sarasate better?
Listening Aaron Rosand playing Sarasate is a joy. For me, it is an opportunity to appreciate the quality and the boundries of the instrument that we call violin.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful expressiveness.......2004-06-25

Rosand is a superb musician. He's a honest , convinced and meticulously artist.
I could watch his craft twice in Caracas in 1978 and 1980 and I saw in Paganini No. 1 and Sibelius . I must confess his presence is very far to be arrogant; and gifted with charisma.
His Sarasate reading is overwhelming. He knows how to get the perfect balance in every little piece. His Gipsy airs with Fodor version are the best in the market . The golden pieces are the Basque caprice , Navarra , Zapateao and Malagueña.
Acquire this album because despite the miniathurist composer who Sarasate was, the rapture feeling given by Rosand deserves for you the effort.
You'll be amazed if you still haven't had the chance to listen this great artist.

2 out of 5 stars Technical exercise vs. musical composition.......2002-11-15

Firstly, Aaron Rosand is rivaled by a mere few regarding virtuosity. Having said that, this disc is simply an expressive compilation of technical showmanship rather than musical enlightenment. Glissando! For the sake of all that is pure and Holy. Cat fights have no place in the repertoire of any violinist! Excessive vibrato, rubato and other "tricks of the trade" pervade this disc like locusts descending on the crops of the Heartland. Mr. Rosand knows (and has demonstrated through numerous recordings) the sweetness and emotional content of the instrument better than most. Only he will ever know why he recorded the disturbing content of the disc.

3 out of 5 stars eh, its okay.......2002-02-25

...I was expecting more. He is technically pretty good. No mistakes anywhere, so its probably good for a student wanting to learn the piece, and needing a good role model or something. I think The recording is just sort of lackluster, and is devoid of the passion that a violinist should exhibit when playing any of sarasate's showpieces. THe pieces sort of serve as skeletons upon which substance should really be added. I sort of regret not holding out for a more passionate violinist (*cough* vengerov *cough*) to release the sarasate spanish dances. Oh well, another cd of mine that will do nothing but collect dust.

It's a real puzzle why a great violinist like Aaron Rosand has never had the major career he deserves. His misfortune benefits bargain hunters, as this wonderful collection of mostly obscure Romantic violin showpieces winds up on a super-bargain label. If this kind of music attracts your fancy, you will seldom, if ever, hear it played with more passion and flair, or better command of the instrument, than Rosand offers. The orchestra is distinctly second-rate, but it doesn't matter much in pieces where the focus is so firmly on the soloist. There's a lot of fun and some surprisingly good music (like the Joachim) in this set. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Rosand As Usual.......2007-05-11

Aaron Rosand has always been known as a specialist in the field of playing "long-forgotten"-type works for violin. His so-called "romantic" style, coupled with a large and radiant tone, have always made him a giant in my book, even though his recordings are nearly all done with minor orchestras and on the Vox label. I don't know why Deutsche Grammophon, RCA, or Philips never signed him...they were crazy not to.

On this 2-CD set, are four concertos and five showpieces. Of these, only one - the Wieniawski Polonaise #1, is even remotely known outside of the violinistic community. To say a minimum, his interpretation of the Joachim Concerto is amazing. This is one difficult piece, and Rosand plays it with all the lyric romanticism that the music encompasses. The first movement draws the listener in immediately, the slow movement is gorgeous, and the third movement sizzles. Ernst's F-sharp minor concerto was popular in the early years of the 20th century, and most of Leopold Auer's students played it. Its cousin concerto (the Wieniawski #1, also in F-sharp minor, but not included on this disc) is musically superior. Although Rosand plays it quite well, it isn't a very interesting piece - but who else has taken the time to record it? Not many. The Hubay concerto is also great - most people don't know just how large Hubay's contribution to the violin world was. He was a fine composer as well as violinist, and unfortunately his "Hejre Kati" (which Rosand plays fine here) is the only thing that really survives (he wrote a 'Carmen Fantasy' that was unfortunately lost to the bigger ones by Sarasate and Waxman.) The Lehar "Fantasy" is great - most will recognize the main theme of it as being the same melody used in the penultimate slow section of Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen". Highly recommended, especially for those who like the off-the-beaten-track, less-often heard fiddlers like Rosand.

5 out of 5 stars Hurrah for Joachim!.......2006-03-19

My own favortie is the Joachim piece--to me a perfect concerto with material developed tightly around strong themes and without persiflage. Joachim never again rose to this level of excellence. As for Rosand he maintains the level of excellence we have come to expect. Totally satisfying.

2 out of 5 stars Rare unheard of Romantic pieces.......2005-05-31

Mr. Rosand has certainly marketed himself and maybe intentionally typecasted himself for specializing in these lost and forgotten compositions of the "Romantic era" which no one else seems to have really taken an interest in playing until his arrival on the concert scene.

There are some good recordings on this two CD set like the Wieniawski Polonaise in D major. He shows technical facility in the Ernst Concerto in F# minor, generally a good sense of rhythm, and a unique tonal palette; yet a person might ask oneself why has he not broken to the top echelon of great soloists like Perlman, Milstein, and Heifetz? The key answer to that is his often faulty and inaccurate intonation on all of his recordings and in his live performances. Take the opening two notes of the violin part from the Joachim Concerto (A, and E) as an example; they are played off pitch. There's no arguing there, two very exposed notes like that have to be played in tune. In the first movement of the Joachim Concerto there is a repeated sequence of D-naturals in a melodic figure. Each D-natural is different in pitch. Rosand's intonation often goes astray in higher registers (mostly sharp) sometimes as far as a quarter tone off mainly due to an excessive use of vibrato reminiscent of an ailing soprano past her prime. Rosand is someone who enjoys using portamento obviously even to the degree though they can become quite tasteless. The slides he uses in the Joachim are not subtle at all. The portamento at times doesn't arrive at the note on time and sounds more like he wasn't quite sure where the note was.

All and all this is a good recording, certainly not one of great distinction or profundity but on the other hand fun to listen to since the pieces are quite good and not really recorded by anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Rosand is a sublime artist! .......2004-08-26

First at all , the warmthness , the musicality and the virtuosism emanated from the soul of this reinassance man establishes a sutil difference with the majority of the violinists in the actual times .
Rosand is superb . And take in mind his repertoire includes several unknown pieces of the musical literature.
He does not seem to have any problem with that , and the works recorded here proves this statement . Joachim and Hubay violin concerts are not precisely the battlehorses in the most of stages around the world .
He made the world premiere recording of the Sibelius Humoresques for violin in the early sixties and the Rimsky Korsakov or Arensky violin concerts .
I had the great honor of appreciate his craft twice in Caracas in 1978 with the Sibelius violin concerto and in 1980 February with the PAganini violin concerto No. 1 .
He is a charming human being , and gave us two unforgettable encores playing Bach partita No. 2 and a Paganini Capriccio No. 17 .
Try to get as soon as possible this fundamental issue who will let you know much more about this legendary violinist and best person .

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-06-30

The virtuoso playing in this CD is breathtaking. Somehow, while flying through amazingly difficult passages, seemingly effortlessly, Mr. Rosand is able to bring out such warmth and beauty in the music that it makes you wonder if you ever really heard it before.

4 out of 5 stars Basement Prices for Penthouse Music.......2007-05-13

Aaron Rosand's CDs are always cheap - yet he's made some of the greatest recordings of standard literature, and often the ONLY recordings of non-standard literature. This disc is like a miniature treasure trove. It features the Saint Saens concerto #3 and the Lalo - and these two recordings are definitely among the aforementioned best out there. Rosand's sound is like that of a vintage bottle of wine. Although he never became a household name, his playing reveals a polished, refined quality that lends itself especially well to romantic works such as these.
His approach brings out all the sparkling Spanishness of the Lalo. The Saint Saens has many pleasing moments; to mention just one, the section of that closes the second movement is perfectly-paced and the harmonics are crystal clear. So many recordings and performances of this piece are played with an almost brusque "Tchaikovskyan" style; Rosand doesn't go overboard and articulates the lyrical sections especially well.
The Sibelius Humoresques are delightful; these six small pieces are never played on concert programs because they simply don't match up well against a concerto or a symphony. On a less positive note, Rosand's Chausson "Poeme" is probably the longest one I've ever heard, at over 17 minutes. The tempos drag considerably and although Rosand's big tone comes forth nicely, the opening cadenza and ending are just too slow. Like Grumiaux's recording of Ravel's "Tzigane", Rosand's is also very padded and lacking the necessary abandonment. He plays it very straightforwardly, hitting all the notes and never deviating far from the printed page. Berlioz's "Reverie & Caprice" and Saint Saens' "Havanaise" get good readings here. But the Lalo and Saint Saens concerto definitely make this 2-CD set well worth the investment. Four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Phenomenal bargain.......2002-07-15

Aaron Rosand is one of the most overlooked fiddlers of our day. His Sibelius is fresh, with Rosand capturing a musical snapshot of the dark, cool Finnish landscape. The Lalo is stylish and impeccably executed. The remainder of the discs, while well played, does not quite reach the excellence of exalted interpretations by Heifetz in the Havanaise and Rondo Capriccioso, or Oistrakh in the Poeme. Occassionally there is some strain in Rosand's slender tone, some of which may be attributable to the sonic limitations of the recording. Climaxes in the Chausson and Berlioz and hindered by such technological limitations. But beneath such problems is exciting and vibrant playing well worth the unusually affordable price.
