Product Description
Among the world's outstanding violinists is Aaron Rosand, whose great art has left audiences spellbound in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. He carries on the traditions of two distinguished schools of violin playing, having studied with Leon Sametini, a disciple of Eugene Ysaye, and Efrem Zimbalist, a student of Leopold Auer. An active performer since his recital debut at the Chicago Opera House at the age of nine, Rosand has appeared with the major American and European orchestras under such distinguished conductors as Rostropovich, Reiner, Kondrashin, Steinberg, Leinsdorf, Bernstein, Skrowaczewski, Slatkin, Maazel and Blomstedt. His many recordings, which have received critical acclaim, include the complete Beethoven, Brahms and Bach sonatas, numerous concertos, and 19th-century Romantic masterpieces. In addition to performing and recording, Mr. Rosand is currently The Dorothy Richard Starling Chair in Violin Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

"The recordings are uniformly clear and rich in detail--truly amazing for their vintage. At Vox's prices, a collection like this one by an estimable violinist like Rosand is well-nigh irresistible. Think of it this way: for almost nothing, you can get one of the best Lalos ever recorded and about an hour and a half of music absolutely free. A phenomenal bargain!" Aaron Rosand is one of our greatest violinists, whether you know him or not. Listening to him dig into these showpieces, you hear phenomenal facility, tremendous tonal quality and variety, and the musical impulse to make the lightweight music come alive. It's all quite exciting, especially if you have my taste for these delightful Spanish tidbits, some of the best violin encores ever composed. I'm pleased that this bargain reissue restores the correct name of Eileen Flissler, Rosand's late wife, who appeared under a pseudonym on the original LP issue because Vox didn't want Sarasate played by a female pianist. Figure that one out! --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Something New.......2007-06-01
The only negative thing I have to say about it, is that I truly feel sorry for anyone who has not heard this disc, and the art that this great artist shares with us.
Thanks so Much, Mr. Rosand. Your the best!
Stars are not enough.......2007-03-06
Listening Aaron Rosand playing Sarasate is a joy. For me, it is an opportunity to appreciate the quality and the boundries of the instrument that we call violin.
Wonderful expressiveness.......2004-06-25
I could watch his craft twice in Caracas in 1978 and 1980 and I saw in Paganini No. 1 and Sibelius . I must confess his presence is very far to be arrogant; and gifted with charisma.
His Sarasate reading is overwhelming. He knows how to get the perfect balance in every little piece. His Gipsy airs with Fodor version are the best in the market . The golden pieces are the Basque caprice , Navarra , Zapateao and Malagueña.
Acquire this album because despite the miniathurist composer who Sarasate was, the rapture feeling given by Rosand deserves for you the effort.
You'll be amazed if you still haven't had the chance to listen this great artist.

It's a real puzzle why a great violinist like Aaron Rosand has never had the major career he deserves. His misfortune benefits bargain hunters, as this wonderful collection of mostly obscure Romantic violin showpieces winds up on a super-bargain label. If this kind of music attracts your fancy, you will seldom, if ever, hear it played with more passion and flair, or better command of the instrument, than Rosand offers. The orchestra is distinctly second-rate, but it doesn't matter much in pieces where the focus is so firmly on the soloist. There's a lot of fun and some surprisingly good music (like the Joachim) in this set. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Great Rosand As Usual.......2007-05-11
On this 2-CD set, are four concertos and five showpieces. Of these, only one - the Wieniawski Polonaise #1, is even remotely known outside of the violinistic community. To say a minimum, his interpretation of the Joachim Concerto is amazing. This is one difficult piece, and Rosand plays it with all the lyric romanticism that the music encompasses. The first movement draws the listener in immediately, the slow movement is gorgeous, and the third movement sizzles. Ernst's F-sharp minor concerto was popular in the early years of the 20th century, and most of Leopold Auer's students played it. Its cousin concerto (the Wieniawski #1, also in F-sharp minor, but not included on this disc) is musically superior. Although Rosand plays it quite well, it isn't a very interesting piece - but who else has taken the time to record it? Not many. The Hubay concerto is also great - most people don't know just how large Hubay's contribution to the violin world was. He was a fine composer as well as violinist, and unfortunately his "Hejre Kati" (which Rosand plays fine here) is the only thing that really survives (he wrote a 'Carmen Fantasy' that was unfortunately lost to the bigger ones by Sarasate and Waxman.) The Lehar "Fantasy" is great - most will recognize the main theme of it as being the same melody used in the penultimate slow section of Sarasate's "Zigeunerweisen". Highly recommended, especially for those who like the off-the-beaten-track, less-often heard fiddlers like Rosand.
Hurrah for Joachim!.......2006-03-19
Rare unheard of Romantic pieces.......2005-05-31
There are some good recordings on this two CD set like the Wieniawski Polonaise in D major. He shows technical facility in the Ernst Concerto in F# minor, generally a good sense of rhythm, and a unique tonal palette; yet a person might ask oneself why has he not broken to the top echelon of great soloists like Perlman, Milstein, and Heifetz? The key answer to that is his often faulty and inaccurate intonation on all of his recordings and in his live performances. Take the opening two notes of the violin part from the Joachim Concerto (A, and E) as an example; they are played off pitch. There's no arguing there, two very exposed notes like that have to be played in tune. In the first movement of the Joachim Concerto there is a repeated sequence of D-naturals in a melodic figure. Each D-natural is different in pitch. Rosand's intonation often goes astray in higher registers (mostly sharp) sometimes as far as a quarter tone off mainly due to an excessive use of vibrato reminiscent of an ailing soprano past her prime. Rosand is someone who enjoys using portamento obviously even to the degree though they can become quite tasteless. The slides he uses in the Joachim are not subtle at all. The portamento at times doesn't arrive at the note on time and sounds more like he wasn't quite sure where the note was.
All and all this is a good recording, certainly not one of great distinction or profundity but on the other hand fun to listen to since the pieces are quite good and not really recorded by anyone else.
Rosand is a sublime artist! .......2004-08-26
Rosand is superb . And take in mind his repertoire includes several unknown pieces of the musical literature.
He does not seem to have any problem with that , and the works recorded here proves this statement . Joachim and Hubay violin concerts are not precisely the battlehorses in the most of stages around the world .
He made the world premiere recording of the Sibelius Humoresques for violin in the early sixties and the Rimsky Korsakov or Arensky violin concerts .
I had the great honor of appreciate his craft twice in Caracas in 1978 with the Sibelius violin concerto and in 1980 February with the PAganini violin concerto No. 1 .
He is a charming human being , and gave us two unforgettable encores playing Bach partita No. 2 and a Paganini Capriccio No. 17 .
Try to get as soon as possible this fundamental issue who will let you know much more about this legendary violinist and best person .
Wow!.......1999-06-30

Basement Prices for Penthouse Music.......2007-05-13
His approach brings out all the sparkling Spanishness of the Lalo. The Saint Saens has many pleasing moments; to mention just one, the section of that closes the second movement is perfectly-paced and the harmonics are crystal clear. So many recordings and performances of this piece are played with an almost brusque "Tchaikovskyan" style; Rosand doesn't go overboard and articulates the lyrical sections especially well.
The Sibelius Humoresques are delightful; these six small pieces are never played on concert programs because they simply don't match up well against a concerto or a symphony. On a less positive note, Rosand's Chausson "Poeme" is probably the longest one I've ever heard, at over 17 minutes. The tempos drag considerably and although Rosand's big tone comes forth nicely, the opening cadenza and ending are just too slow. Like Grumiaux's recording of Ravel's "Tzigane", Rosand's is also very padded and lacking the necessary abandonment. He plays it very straightforwardly, hitting all the notes and never deviating far from the printed page. Berlioz's "Reverie & Caprice" and Saint Saens' "Havanaise" get good readings here. But the Lalo and Saint Saens concerto definitely make this 2-CD set well worth the investment. Four stars.
