Forget what they SAY.......2003-11-10

Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!

Most Aggravating Album in the World!.......2002-05-26

This CD is the first thing I ever returned to Amazon. It is an inferior product--selections cut off abruptly before the end, volume fades and returns in the middle of a cut...production values are pure schlock here. Maybe I should have expected as much from such a sophomoric title.

A fair introduction to Classical Music.......2001-03-03

I purchased this CD because I am new to Classical Music and thought this would be a good introduction CD. There is some wonderful music on this CD. The only problem I have with this CD is every other track is Opera of one form or another. As a new listener I found that after the Opera tracks I felt I had been yelled at and it was a distraction to the other music contained on the CD. I now know to hit the skip button on my CD player just about every other track. I only gave it 3 stars because I felt put off by the vocal tracks. I believe that when someone is new to Classical Music they do not think of Opera. If you don't mind hitting the skip button a lot or if you like Opera this CD is for you!

Great for Beginners.......2000-07-14

This is a nice recording for folks who don't know much about classical music, and would serve as a wonderful introduction. It covers centuries of great music in a very listener-friendly format. I am sure that I will use this CD in my music classroom. For a seasoned classical music lover, however, the CD proves a bit frustrating, including only segments of masterworks (not even the entire movement of the Holst). I bought the CD for a few recordings, which I truly enjoy and make the CD a worthwile purchase. But I found (and I think that most classical musicians will find) that I already had many of these works in their entirety.

Exellent compilation.......2000-04-12

This is a fine collection of classical songs for those that have little experience with classical music. Howver, I truly love it.

Greatest hits of classical music.......2001-08-13

The use of the words "from the Movies" in the title of this compilation is misleading. While there are a handful of titles that were great originals from movies (the Star Wars theme, for example), the majority of the music is simply great classical music that happened to show up in a movie. This technicality aside, the music was amazing. The clarinet concerto and the Puccini opera from "Witches of Eastwick" are two of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

I belong to that camp of people who think that if Mozart was alive today he would be writing scores for theatrical films. The best thing about "Music From the Movies" is that it combines the use of classical music in movies, such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" in "Apocalypse Now" and Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" in "A Room With a View" with John Williams' "Main Title" from "Jurassic Park" and the "John Dunbar Theme" from John Barry's score for "Dances With Wolves." Unfortunately of the 33 tracks on this 2-disc set, only the last half-dozen or so are by contemporary composers. So the chief charm of this collection remains that it allows you to identify the classic music used in movies such as "Platoon," "A Clockwork Orange," "Wall Street," and "Kolya." Placido Domingo and Herbert Von Karajan are representative of the singers and conductors included in this collection, which is truly one of the better sets featuring classical music in the movies.

I ordered this CD to get one piece of music only. What I received in reality was a compilation of masterpieces to refresh and enliven my very soul. The operatic selections are well known pieces performed by 'the great ones' (i.e Placido Domingo). Here you get the best of opera without having to endure what the uneducated would consider tendious. Additionally, I was surprised to discover how many movies themes were excerpts from the classics. This CD includes the name and movement of each selection, as well as the performer. It is a wonderful appetizer before investing in a full meal. I didn't begin with this intention, but now I want to hear complete pieces; anticipating a new excitment for many of the composers.

Highly Disappointing..........2007-04-08

I picked this CD up in the bookstore after listening to it. I'm a big fan of the powerful classics, such as Carmina Burana O Fortuna, and, of course, Verdi's Dies Irae. I already owned those two pieces as well as a few others when I purchased this album. I had figured if they were on it, it was going to be one impressive CD.

I knew something was wrong the moment I started listening to it. Like others have mentioned, the musicmanship is poor. It sounds rushed most of the time. Plus, I compared Massive Classic's versions of Verdi's Dies Irae to the version I already had, and no way do they stand up. One sounded professional, practiced, and powerful. The other, on this CD: wimpy, weak, and lacking.

This CD couldn't take the time to get the best performances of these classics. Don't waste your time listening to it. Find a different album--there are better ones. My suggestions is The Greatest Choral Show on Earth, which features performances from the world's best orchestras and choirs.

But MAN do I love this CD! It's fantastic. Most of the songs you've heard from various movies or television shows, and now they're finally all together. I love listening to it while I drive - I find that I don't scream at traffic as much.

Terrible recordings of great songs........2003-12-20

The song selecting is awesome, but the performances and recordings (or the remastering) are awful. The balance seems off (very tinny sound), and the musicianship is weak (Vivaldi's "Summer" sounds like eigth-notes!).

Exciting and Inspiring! So good my uncle is keeping my CD after he 'borrowed' it, and I have to buy another copy. And I hope it comes soon! Fun to listen to during rush hour traffic!

Hollywood's ode to the classics.......2007-03-26

Few Americans go out of the way to listen to classical music, yet Americans love movies, and many of the best American movies used classical music for their soundtracks. This CD takes some of the most famous scores from some of the most famous movies, and puts them together onto one very long album. The pieces span the Classical, Baroque, Romance, and Modern eras of classical music, with pieces such as Pachelbel Canon, Bolero and Beethoven's 9th symphony. The movies include dramas (Amadeus), romance (10), action (Die Hard), sci-fi (2001) and comedy (A Midsummer night's sex comedy). All in all, a good disc.

An excellent collection of classical greats.......2005-04-08

For anyone who is looking for simply a wide variety of classical hits on one CD, I highly recommend CLASSICS AT THE MOVIES. Highlighted on this CD are such compositions as "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY); Pachelbel's "Canon in D" (ORDINARY PEOPLE); "Serenade No. 13" (AMADEUS); Paganini's "Rhapsody" (SOMEWHERE IN TIME); and "Boléro" (10).

When I first bought the CD, I hadn't seen more than half of the films mentioned on it. But I have no doubt they are heavily complimented by including this kind of classical music in their scores. (I wish more films had this.)

Unfortunately, when you have a CD with this kind of title and tracks which are labeled with certain films containing the respective pieces of music, the buyer is automatically under the impression that it will be the exact same music featured in the film he or she saw. For instance, when I first purchased this CD, I did so (having virtually no knowledge of classical music at the time) under the impression that the track labeled "Die Hard" would contain the classical music featured in the movie DIE HARD. Well, not exactly. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is rather long, and the piece I was looking for (and the piece used in DIE HARD) was "Ode to Joy". Well, "Ode to Joy" is not on this CD at all. Instead, it's a piece from Beethoven's 9th which was not even featured in the movie DIE HARD. If you're looking for "Ode to Joy" or, better yet, the entire Ninth Symphony, I highly recommend the CD MAD ABOUT BEETHOVEN.

A similar thing occurs with track #12: "O Fortuna!" (GLORY). The piece on the CD is the most common version--actually, the official version. This piece had a slightly different arrangement when James Horner used it in the Civil War epic. Anyone who purchases this CD because they enjoyed the version they heard in the movie will be disappointed if they purchase this CD. Instead, they ought to simply purchase the soundtrack to the movie GLORY.

Overall, this is a great classical CD. All of the music on here is both relaxing and enjoyable.

Classics at the Movies a Big Hit!.......1999-11-25

As a classics fan of many years, I thought my wife's purchase of this CD may have been a waste. Now I'm buying a copy as a Christmas gift. The classical works picked by movie directors can be marvelous. When I saw "Platoon", the music just after an all-night battle haunted me for years. Then I found it on this CD. Anyone who appreciates the "Platoon" music should hear the Adagio for Strings on this CD.

The second edition in TELARC's SAMPLER series does a magnificent job of tempting us with aural tidbits. When each excerpt necessarily fades in or out prematurely the listener is left with a craving for MORE!

Most of the works presented on SAMPLER VOLUME 2 should be familiar to all lovers of this genre. One musical highlight after another seems to parade by, until over an hour passes in a trice. This may be one of the finest classical music sampler CDs ever produced. Highlights include.......... EVERYTHING!

Greatest Carmina recorded.......2004-09-25

What a blessing it was, indeed, when a contact at a downtown Chicago record store had this recording playing one day while I was at the shop during the mid-1990's.

At that time, I believe it was available only as a "Special Import" and so I requested the disk, and it has held a special place in my collection ever since.

I also own the Shaw and Blomstedt recordings, but this recording has all of them beat in my view.

The intensity, pacing and power are all "just right" and you can almost feel the "sincerity" of the performance (for want of a better word for it).

Even if you have grown used to the work and perhaps have even wearied of it, if you don't own this recording, try it.

If you are a newcomer to "Carmina Burana" then I urge you to buy it, because it is THE recording to own.

I am literally forced by the magnificence of this recording.......2002-06-15

to agree with the other reviewers. This is the best Carmina I've ever heard. It's a mixture of beautiful tunes, raucous songs, and sensual longing (read `lust') made almost palpable by the soloists, choirs, and orchestra, all under the able baton of Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos.

I can almost taste the longing these characters have for one another, and that is as it should be, as far as I am concerned. This is a wild party, at which almost anything can happen... and probably does. Wolanski sounds magnificent here, catching all the lust Orff wrote in the music for the baritone. (John Noble takes on the song usually done in falsetto. I forget its name right now.) What happened to this man? I never saw any other records with Wolanski on them, and this is a pity. None of the other baritones sing Estuans interius with his abandon, though Bernd Weikl comes close on the Levine recording. The man Wolanski sings sounds like a man of the world, who knows what he wants and just where to get it.

Lucia Popp is perfect for the soprano part- girlish, lyric, with easy top notes and a long breath line, fit to die for. I believe this performance caused her star to rise so many years ago, bringing Popp to world prominence. Get this recording to find out why. Lucia Popp was a class act, and she died far too young. Fortunately, she made many recordings, thus leaving us a legacy of a fine woman and a fine singer. (For those who care, Lucia Popp was one of the finest Queens of the Night from the Magic Flute I have ever heard!) She had one of those voices which sounded like nobody else.

Unger does a fine job with one of the strangest, most grating songs ever committed to paper by any sane composer- The Song of the Roasted Swan. It's just as uncomfortable to listen to as that poor bird must have felt. Unger takes it in falsetto, and catches the mixture of comedy and tragedy Orff seemed to be intending for it.

The choirs and orchestra sing and play this work with more than a touch of madness, which is just what this maniac composition needs. In taberna is done in a head-long fashion, like a runaway train full of party nuts going completely out of control- but they never lose their way. Chaos is just around the corner, but we never quite catch up to it. Those who are familiar with Carmina know there are many beautifully lyric moments in this piece. These too are brought off with style, and given a grace the other parts lack. It never drags and has never disappointed me in the 30 years I've owned it, both on vinyl and on this CD.

The sound, by the way, is superb. You need not worry at all on that score. Transfers were done with expert hands and ears at the controls- voices, instruments, and all the parts seem to come through clearly. The piano part in Totus florio seldom comes across as clearly as it does here, thus adding a layer most other recordings miss. Other Carminas? Plenty are available, with James Levine's excellent version leading the rivals, in my humble opinion.

In case you're wondering why I don't say anything about Bolero. Hmmm! What can I say? The performance is excellent, but, to paraphrase an old joke- the best version of Bolero I've ever heard was okay. My love for Ravel's music knows no bounds, but I do not appreciate all the repetition this composition abounds with. The best version, for my warped taste, is Bernstein's classic performance. It almost makes me forget just how banal Bolero is.

The best Carmina I've heard..........2001-08-25

Out of all the Carmina Buranas I've ever listened to, this one moves me the most. Carmina Burana's music and the texts it was written for are often rather rude and crude, speaking to the listener in a very sensual manner. This is music of people, young and old, who want to do 'The Nasty', or get roaring drunk. There's also idealistic young love on display, and de Burgos and his forces capture all of it right on the money. Raymond Wolansky, the main baritone here, may not be a household name, but his work here thrills me more than the superstars on the other recordings, which includes Sherrill Milnes, Harve Presnell, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, and Bernd Weikl. (Weikl does an incredible job with Estuans interius!) Lucia Popp is at her best here, and the gorgeous tones of her lyric soprano are just ravishing. Listen to Tempus est iocundum on track 22 to get a great idea at how lascivious and tantalizing this score can be. Everyone joins in, taking their turns, and it should not take much imagination to picture what is going on... at least, if your mind is as dirty as mine. The transfer is excellent, to my ears, and the soloists, orchestra, and chorus all sound great. I would highly recommend this one, along with the Jochum performance and James Levine's version with Weikl, Anderson, and Creech. Enjoy! That's what it's for!

Best Performance of the Carmina Burana on Disc!.......2000-02-21

This disc has a strange coupling for the Carmina Burana -- although it is a fine version of Bolero, it is more than a little disconcerting. And the quality of the recording itself is not quite the very finest. But neither objection is strong enough to detract from a five-star rating for the main performance on the disc, Carl Orff's magisterial Carmina Burana, which is simply dazzling. Conductor Raphael Fruehbeck de Burgos commands the huge forces -- an enormous orchestra complete with pianos in the percussion section, a chorus, a boys' chorus, and four soloists -- with a firm and masterful hand. The chorus is excellent, as are the boys in the Cours D'Amour section; the soloists are brilliant-- the men, especially in the "Omnia Sol Temperat" and "Estuans Interius" numbers, are incisive and characterful without ever being self-indulgent. And the soprano soloist is second-to-none: Lucia's Popp's version of "In Trutina Mentis Dubia" is sensuous, luscious, thrilling-- her modulation of tone is exquisite, and -- after the first phrase climax, her inspired breath simply adds to the delicious sensuality of the piece-- it gives me goosebumps! The dark, brooding opening chorus, "O Fortuna", so famous now, has never been better rendered; from the Round Dance and wonderful Tanz for orchestra in the Uf Dem Anger section, to the whispered, then shouted, male chorus in "In Taberna Quando Summus", to the penultimate, joyous chorus in praise of the feminine principal, "Blanziflor et Helena" -- the Bright Side of the Goddess, so to speak-- coming full circle and ending again with the fateful "O Fortuna" -- the work has never had a greater performance. This work, perhaps the greatest 20th Century vocal work, and one of the few examples of what might be termed "Art Deco" music, is a delight that will capitivate even those unaccustomed to Classical music. And this recording is most highly recommended! (Oh, and the Bolero is nice too.)

With so many compilation CDs billing themselves as being perfect for "romantic moments" or "young minds," it's refreshing to find a CD that attempts to do nothing but get your blood pumping. And Extreme Classics does just that; there's not a single Bach excerpt, and even Vivaldi's summer storm from The Four Seasons couldn't make the cut. Instead, we get snippets of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" (from Die Walkure), the conclusion of Ravel's Bolero, as well as the finale of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. The "extreme" moniker might be a bit misleading (save that for Stockhausen!), but these are great cuts that will have your heart racing. The recordings by included conductors Leonard Slatkin, Fritz Reiner, and Eugene Ormandy are all classics. Crank it up and watch the neighbors complain! --Jason Verlinde

Great Family-Style Classical CD.......2006-01-05

I bought this CD back in college when I listened to just about anything. Now that it is several years later, I still enjoy this CD and love the selections of music they chose. The "extreme" refers to the excitement and energy generated in your body when listening to the music.

One of the great things I love about this CD is that my children (2 and 5) also love to listen to it. The little one asks me to play the "music without words"! The older one likes to listen and act out what he thinks is happening in the music - it's a fantastic way to get children into classical music. It's fun, upbeat music that children like and will get them interested in hearing some of the more "sedate" classics.

The CD is "family-style" for another reason as well - you are getting several helpings of lots of different pieces. There aren't whole symphonies on the album, but rather the parts most people will probably recognize when they hear them.

For me, this was not a problem, as those were the parts I wanted to hear anyway! For a person looking to hear some great selections from famous pieces, this is for you! Enjoy!

Extreme Classics. FABULOUS.......2004-01-03

I am quite a fan of classical music and have many CDs. This is far and away my very favorite. I love to crank it up on a long drive. Just tremendous.

Not an exciting collection and in no way "Extreme".......2001-12-09

Despite the humorous cover art and the exciting notion of "Extreme" orchestral classics, this collection does not live up to its potential. The sound quality is lacking, as it is with all of the RCA Victor classical recordings I have heard, and the track selections are not really all that compelling. I recommend a pass on this one.
