A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26
But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.
Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.
A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.
"Best Bach - Box Set".......2005-11-06
Pinnock is good performer.......2005-09-30
Might sound better when it's played piano.
Unbeatable Value.......2004-12-15
The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.
While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

You say your favorite Vivaldi passage is the Four Seasons summer storm? Well, here's a disc for you. Fabio Biondi and the Europa Galante (known to many for their bestselling Seasons disc) focus on concerti con titoli, the titled concertos the Red Priest wrote that are full of inventive drama and expression. Writing for his student orchestra, the composer employed plenty of creativity in his instrumentation, and, as evidenced on a few tracks here, he wasn't beyond recycling motifs from his older works. But just give this exciting disc a listen. The Concerto funebre (RV 579) is sweet, yet somber; the six-movement La notte (RV 439) is weird and ominous; and the stormy seas of La tempesta di mare really come alive in Europa Galante's hands. Biondi and his ensemble never try to steal the show from these works; they let the music speak for itself. Some period-instrument groups sound a little ragged, but this one gets it just right and delivers a knockout, taut performance. A great disc for Baroque lovers. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

He is NOT an opera-conductor, period. But he IS a brilliant violinist! His playing in the Vivaldi concertos is just outstanding. The orchestra is also amazing. I really recommends this set of concertos to anyone not familiar with the Biondi legacy!

This is a delightful record. Telemann, one of the most prolific composers of all time, wrote music that is technically masterful, endlessly inventive, full of surprises, emotionally mercurial, and continuously engaging. In these five concertos, composed over two decades, the solo flutist is often joined by one or more soloists from the ranks of the orchestra, who, as in Telemann's day, are all fully equal to the task. This results in a wide variety of combinations and colors, illustrating Telemann's skill in displaying each instrument at its best, so as to "give the player joy, the listener pleasure," as he himself put it.These performances certainly radiate infectious enjoyment. The concertos all follow the traditional form, alternating four slow and fast movements, but are infinitely diverse in tonality, texture, mood, and character. There are carefree, sprightly, playful, elegant dances, humorous imitation games, brilliant passage-work and cadenzas, startling chromaticisms, and deeply expressive melodies that beguile the ear and touch the heart. The first movement of the opening Concerto is so reminiscent of a Bach Arioso that one of the two composers must have "borrowed" it from the other. The playing is superb in a modified period-style: the pitch is normal; the sound wonderfully pure, but rich and full; tempi are designed to invite both virtuosity and leisurely enjoyment of musical and expressive details. Pahud uses a narrow, restrained vibrato that underlines the flawless beauty of his tone. The other players, all like him present or past principals of the Berlin Philharmonic, match him in the perfection of their intonation, phrasing, and ensemble. --Edith Eisler

Telemann: Pleasurable Instrumentation - Modern Flute + Oboe D'Amore .......2007-06-12
A couple of years ago, I played this recording of these flute concertos so much that I feel I lived in this music. I took them everywhere with me and listened to them all the time for several months. They are very beautiful, lively and will definitely lift the listener's spirits. The three other reviewers, particuarly Matthew M. Yau, have written very good and complete reviews. My only addition is to particularly praise the combination of the flute and oboe d'amore in the Concerto in E (#13-16) and the Vivace (#16) in particular. It is unbelieveably beautiful! I am also extremely fond of the Concerto in D (#17-20) and the Andante of the Concerto in G (#1). The liner notes tell an interesting story of this movement's reconstruction/restoration.
Elegance and Charm, Not to Mention Beauty.......2006-06-13
Telemann Perfection.......2005-07-08
The CD builds, fresco by fresco.. Starting with the Adagio driven G Major Flute , then travelling rather quickly to the Vivace second movement. The entire CD tends to be a study in that sort of contrast, which is one of the reasons that no matter in what venue we are listening to Vivaldi, he always mangaes to keep us alert! He was one of the first composers to engage in that sort of dimminuendo, zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Quiet you down to the stage that you're ready to nod off and then set a fire cracker off near your right ear!
Maybe not that bad, but I think Beethoven got a lot of his ideas in contrasting modes from first Vivaldi, then Mozart. It's just my own little theory, and I'm definitely no music maven, so just chalk it up to UFO theory type conjecture.
Don't let any of that dissuade you from purchasing this CD, however. It's clear, distinct, exceptionally executed! I can't detect a flaw in the ointment! 5 stars, no debate!

Pahud makes a strong case, with two debut recordings.......2004-05-26
The five pieces heard in this compilation were composed over a period of more than 20 years and fully demonstrate Telemann's engagement with the concerto genre. In each of the five works almost every member in the orchestras at Telemann's disposal was capable of taking solo parts. The beauty of sound springs forth from the combination with softer tone of instruments such as oboe d'amore, viola d'amore or violone, which enhance the flute's brilliance and crispness, while an often astonishing playfulness could develop in the high registers when Telemann introduced a second flute or a violin, as manifested obviously in the Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8).
Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in G (1-4) is a first recording because the only manuscript copy of the parts was in an extremely poor condition that the piece was sadly considered unplayable (until 2000). The concerto was composed for oboe as well as for the transverse flute of the time. The andante movement is the most beautiful movement, so elegantly and stately executed. Pahud makes such a strong case for the first recording of this concerto.
Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8) is probably the most beautiful concerto in Musique de Table. The agility and swiftness of notes best suited the festive occasions for which Telemann composed in 1733. This might be the most well-known and most played piece out of this compilation. Even Handel himself performed some of the pieces and some of his own compositions (flute sonata and oboe sonata) show the inspiration of Telemann.
Concerto for Two Flutes, Violone, Strings and Continuo (9-12) is also a debut recording for the piece, with a deep, velvety tone of the violone that creates an impressive contrariety to the agility of the flutes, notably when the flutes and the violone play together in parallel for long stretches.
Concerto for Flute, Oboe d'amore, Viola d'amore, Strings and Continuo in E (13-16). The Largo in D minor forms a sharp contrast to the vivacious movements to Part 1 of Music de Table. In the Siciliano, the repeated theme and expression is achieved by repetition of three concertante instruments without the continuo.
Listen for the only concertos with a combination of flute and two other different solo instruments in the final piece of the compilation, Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in D (17-20).
Overall high marks for the agility, flow, and swiftness of all the performances in this compilation.

Wonderful music.......2006-10-24
The music is sublime. Christian Benda is superb on the cello. The orchestra plays confidently and knowingly. The digital sound is clear and crisp. All in all, this is an excellent CD. By all means, take advantage of the very reasonable price to add this to your classical music collection.
Click on No. 2, Romanze, and you'll understand my five stars.......2002-12-16
In my judgment it is critical that performers feel this music and bring it to music-loving audiences without mannered play (e.g. period performance) that interposes intellectual barriers to enjoyment of it as timeless beauty. In this respect, Christian Benda does a tasteful and sensitive job, neither adopting "authentic performance" tendencies like cutting short languorous phrases, nor going into excess sentimentality. He comes by his right to play this music naturally, being of Bohemian origin like the Stamitz family.
For music lovers who are not yet familiar with Carl Stamitz, I encourage you to check out his viola concerto. It stands with the Telemann viola concerto, the Mozart double concerto, and Berloz's Harold in Italy as among the most memorable works for an instrument that serves as a loyal team member but rarely gets its moment in the sun.

Album Description
K'li zemer means "instrument of song" in Hebrew, and a traditional klezmer was an instrumental musician who entertained at weddings and other festive occasions in Jewish life. In recent times, the extraordinary popularity of "klezmer music" has inspired virtuoso showpieces for clarinet and flute by leading contemporary composers. Klezmer Concertos celebrates this joyous musical tradition with concert works from the 1940s to the present day.Customer Reviews:

Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30
Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"
Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17
Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.
Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.
Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.
great!.......2001-01-04
