5 out of 5 stars Fulfilling Overview of the Baroque Era in Music and Words.......2005-05-09

Yet another great bargain-priced package from Naxos effectively provides an overview of the rich Baroque period with two discs containing more than 2 ½ hours of music and a comprehensive, 140-page primer booklet. Compiled by music historian Clive Unger-Hamilton, the collection is well-chosen to represent the many different facets of the era without recycling the more obvious candidates like Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". The quality of the playing and singing is top-notch throughout, and the program contains quite a smorgasbord of pieces from dramatic opera arias to harpsichord pieces (sometimes played on authentic instruments, other times on modern grands) to full-blown choruses. Standout tracks include Allegri's "Miserere mei" with an ethereal boy treble soloist; two arias sung by soprano Ingrid Kertesi, in particular, Almirena's lament, "Lascia ch'io pianga" from Handel's "Rinaldo"; and a lovely "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" performed by soprano Kym Amps. The choral pieces can be astounding from Bach's "St Matthew Passion (BWV 244)" performed by the large Hungarian Festival Chorus and full symphony orchestra to the eight voices that wrap themselves around "For unto us a child is born" from Handel's "Messiah".

The booklet itself provides great value as you listen to the selections. There is a well written 85-page essay by Unger-Hamilton, who manages to encapsulate an enormous amount of information about this period which leaves a novice like me with a more solid basis of understanding the music of the Baroque era. In fact, what is quite valuable is that Unger-Hamilton provides a specific historical reference for each piece on the recording in his essay. There is also a very helpful glossary and an intriguing timeline which covers musical milestones relative to similar milestones in history, arts and architecture and literature. Moreover, there is an alphabetical list of the key Baroque composers and an accompanying map of Europe with important music centers and the composers associated with these cities. The thoughtful presentation of this package really makes the $8.98 price tag one of the great bargains here.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to the Music of the Baroque Era.......2005-04-04

This is one of a series of the 'Discover ...' 2 CD sets -- at super-budget price -- from Naxos that makes use of complete movements of music from the era in question. It is accompanied by an excellent booklet - a thick one! - with an explanatory essay that gives background on the music as well as blow-by-blow descriptions of the music being presented. All the selections (from such composers as Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Scarlatti, Schütz, Purcell, Corelli, Pachelbel, Charpentier, et al.) are from Naxos's extensive library of recorded music and as far as I can tell all the performances are top-notch.

In addition there is a Timeline of the Baroque Era that includes material about the music, history, art, architecture and literature of the times. There is a map of Europe that shows where various composers lived and worked. There is a list of composers (more than just those whose music provides the audio examples) with their dates and locations. There is a glossary of common musical terms. There is also an extensive list of music suggested for further listening. I can easily imagine this set being the springboard for a newcomer to baroque music to begin a lifetime of enjoyment of these and similar works.

The presentation is thoughtfully done and the whole thing is in a slipcase that will preserve the CDs as well as the booklet for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars About #4..........2002-09-10

If you already have 3 of the volume from wherever shop. You would better listen to the final one, volume #4. I don't think there is easier way to get the volume than to go to Amazon Japan Site. If you have ever experienced Japanese web site, you would know that it could never be easy to shop for the people who do not read Japanese. Of course, there is a language selection option for english speaking customer; you'd better not to be so intimidated for shopping at the site. As Jmichael wrote, to track down volume # 4 is well worth the nuisance. Good luck!

    5 out of 5 stars A sublime session!!.......2002-07-10

I can't really say enough about the music from this 1988 recording session....The late John Lewis shows he was a master of both jazz and classical music. The swing and jazz improvisations here ebb and flow out of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book One, as naturally as the tides on the ocean. Such a fine, yet under-apreciated take on Bach! Do yourself the favor of buying this recording. (This is volume #3. It took me several years to track down all 4 volumes. It was well worth the effort!)

3 out of 5 stars Not for conservative Bach fans, to be sure..........2007-04-09

The first thing you'll notice after you get this collection, or perhaps even before you get it if you've actually looked at the track listings here, is that this certainly isn't the Well-Tempered Clavier played on the organ. "24 Preludes and Fugues, Vol. 1"? I don't think so, Tim. Must've been some kind of labeling misprint at the factory. What it is, is a hodge-podge of organ music from the Baroque master played in a most unconventional manner.

I'll be honest, when I first got this collection over a decade ago, I felt like throwing it into the garbage after the first hearing. It sounded as if these great masterpieces of music were being played by a drunken baboon. I bought it because I wanted to hear Bach, not Anthony Newman's...let us say, unique...attempt at dazzling the listner with his uniqueness. This collection is not, I repeat, NOT for those who are looking for the Bach that they know and love.

That being said, I'm glad I didn't toss it out. There are few pieces on these two discs that, unconventional though they may be, are really good in their own way. The Toccata, Adagio, & Fugue, Toccata and Fugue in F, Prelude & Fugue in Fm, and the "St. Anne" Prelude & Fugue are all among my favorite versions of those works I have yet heard. Newman's unique approach does seem to breathe life into these works in such a way as to make them a one-of-a-kind sonic experience. Other than the works I mentioned, though, my original impression stayed with me. Newman generally just plays to fast, to choppy, for me to truly enjoy.

When all is said and done, if you give this one a chance, and take the time to sift through the hyperactive, muddled interpretations, and Mr. Newman's presumptuous musical ego, you should be able to find some jewels in the dung heap, so to speak. As the saying goes: Buyer Beware!

Well, since this is a bargain-priced collection, it's probably worth your while to pick it up and give it a listen. Heck, who knows? You may end up agreeing with some of those here who rave about it.

5 out of 5 stars Bach like you never heard it........2006-11-03

The people who gave this one star don't know what they're talking about. Anthony Newman takes Bach and cranks it up to Insane. I'm a huge fan of Bach and this is the most original interpretation i've heard. He creates out of his mind insane builds followed by an instant switch into a ghostly haunted church style whisper. If you want Back like you've never experienced it, grab this up.

1 out of 5 stars Sabotaged by Technical Brilliance.......2006-09-16

Mr. Newman is an admirable technician whose manual and pedal virtuosity are truly extraordinary. Unfortunately, his dexterity gets in the way of the music. At these hyperkenetic speeds the effect is the aural equivalent of disco-era strobe lighting. Thank you, but I don't like it at all. I don't like dutiful plodding in Bach's organ works either, but the music needs a little breathing space for the granduer to make its effect. The chorale based preludes aren't badly done at all. It's a shame that some of the reflection exhibited in the chorale works didn't filter into the free compositions. Yes, the notes are all there, but the polyphony doesn't have time to register at these speeds. While I appreciate ornamentation in this music, it should add expression not the here-it-comes-again predictability we get in these run throughs. Mr. Newman also has a preference for garish, reedy registrations. All in all, the race to the finish line and the monotonous, blaring screech of the organ make for some unpleasant listening.

    1 out of 5 stars Simply terrible.......2004-03-28

Mr. Newman plays with the accuracy and passion of a machine. This recording is truly lifeless. At the very least, he plays way too fast as so the listeners ears are only assaulted briefly.

5 out of 5 stars Newman is good, if a bit flamboyant.......2001-11-12

That's what our church organist (Ph.D., Eastman) said when I asked him about Newman, after I had bought and enjoyed the above recording. (I have heard so many BAD recordings of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor that I was relieved to hear it played sensibly on this wonderful CD.)

I'm sorry if one reviewer didn't like Newman's added notes; he should look up 'ornaments' in the Norton/Grove concise Encyclopedia of Music - or listen to contemporary soloists in Handel's Messiah for ornamentation in the spirit of the Baroque and classical eras.

Is the recording dry? Yes - but it's not muddy, as cathedral organ music is. Every week I sit five feet from a 22-stop tracker action organ built in the North German style and hear glorious music, often Bach, performed impeccably. Our church seats 300 and doesn't have cathedral acoustics - I still get a thrill from Bach, played well.

Where Gould is concerned we always need to expect the unexpected. Damage to his Steinway grand piano thwarted his plan to record the Handel keyboard suites using that: the critical reception given to his plan B, namely to record them on the harpsichord instead, brought that scheme to a halt after he had done just the first 4 out of the total number of 15 or 16. Here they are anyway, together with two preludes and fugues from the second book of Bach's 48, on a Wittmayer instrument, the one harpsichord Gould was comfortable with.

The legend of Gould's eccentricity has lost nothing in the telling. I find little or no eccentricity in most of his playing, but he can always spring surprises and he chooses to do just that on the very first track of this disc. His playing of the prelude to Handel's first suite is downright peculiar. Gould applies a heavy rubato, and between that and the way he spreads the chords the melodic line becomes extremely hard to follow. Afterwards everything is really comparatively plain sailing, at any rate for me. I suppose not everyone is going to like his choice of tempi at times, nor his slightly erratic approach to the question of playing repeats. In particular the Air from the set of variations in the third Handel suite is made to take nearly as long as the following five variations combined, but I still have no real problem. It has an air of spontaneous mood-of-the-moment creation for me, and I even suspect that the legendary improviser Handel might have been rather pleased at hearing such whimsical imagination brought to bear on music he had written mainly for the purposes of teaching. Imagination was probably the last thing he would have expected from many of his pupils.

Gould's registration is a bit of a curate's egg to me. Some of it seems very effective indeed, but he has a predilection for one rather throttled-sounding register that I wish he had used a bit less. Otherwise Gould is still Gould - one of the greatest technicians of the keyboard there can ever have been - and you will find here as you will find in nearly everything he did that uncanny evenness of touch, crispness of ornamentation and his distinctive `bite' in the rhythm.

Those who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like, I suppose. As it happens, I do not own a version of the Handel suites. I am an enormous admirer of Handel and an enormous admirer of Gould, so I am more than pleased to have acquired this particular subset of them. I would recommend sampling the disc before buying, because it is going to be a matter of individual taste even more than is usually the case. Alternatively, just take the plunge and get yourself a disc whose faults at least do not include predictability. Better sorry than safe, I say.

Ummm.....This cd is ok, but Glen's harpsichord technique is terrible. I think he should have had lessons before he played the instrument. I can't doubt that he is a marvelous pianist though.

    3 out of 5 stars A real oddity from a great pianist.,.......2002-02-14

Well, you will never have heard a harpsichord like this! Glenn Gould was no harpsichordist (although, in my opinion an incomparable pianist) and the Wittmeyer instrument he chose to use sounds most peculiar in places.

Gould chose to make this recording on a harpsichord following serious accidental damage caused to his beloved Steinway piano CD318, which rendered it unfit for use for quite some time. This resulting recording is interesting, if hardly ranking among his greatest performances! But it does have a sense of fun that is infectious...this is Gould saying "This is me having fun, but don't take it too seriously." Listen to track 4; the Gigue from Suite No 1 in A major. It may sound fanciful , but if anyone could ever be said to be making a harpsichord laugh, that is what Gould is doing here, although to me the tempo of this movement is somewhat uneven. Unfortunately Track 1, the Prelude to this particular suite, is rather weak, and certainly lacks the clarity and decisiveness usually associated with Gould's playing. On initally hearing this opening track I thought that for the first time I had bought a Gould recording that would be disappointing, but I was wrong. I stuck with it and found the remainder of the CD much more rewarding, although as I said above, it remains for me a curiosity more than a classic example of Glenn Gould at his sublime best.

There is only one other recording (as far as I know) that gives us a glimpse of Glenn Gould playing an instrument other than the piano, and that is his recording of extracts from Bach's Art of Fugue, the first nine tracks of which he recorded on the organ. And that is altogether a more serious effort than this strange harpsichord offering.

Incidently you can also watch on video Gould at the harpsichord playing tracks 25 and 26 of this CD ( Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E major from Book II of the Well-Tempered Clavier) on Sony's Glenn Gould Collection IV - "So You Want To Write A Fugue?". Watching him at this unfamiliar instrument is quite a contrast, following as it does a rendition of Bach's G minor Concerto on the grand piano with the Toronto Symphony!

This is probably a CD for devoted Gould addicts only, or at least for those who are reasonably familiar with his piano recordings. . It's enjoyable, but you won't want to listen to it as often as his other work.

5 out of 5 stars Hasn't left my carousel in months........2000-03-11

This is a fascinating set of recordings by Gould. For me, the Handel harpsichord sonotas make this special. The compositions themselves seem nearly contemporary in style, and far more melodious and creative than the other Bach organ works on the CD, which are staid and stuffy in comparison. You can even hear Gould humming along in his characteristically eccentric way.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully strange!.......1999-11-24

Gould's Haendel harpsichord interpetations took a beating from the critics when first released, but I must say that it is the most interesting record I have of these works, and I have 7. Fantastic timing and pleasant, although unorthodox, phrazing makes this record a joy to have and to compare with other great performers such as Leonhardt's rendition of the same works. Many of your friends won't believe it is the same tunes. A small minus for the sound on the harpsichord though. Recommended, for its pure artistic value as well as for fun!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bach - in the best transfer.......2005-04-28

Edwin Fischer's Bach is very special indeed. This recording of "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier" is the first milestone in the discography of Bach's work for the keyboard. It is a Romantic approach, of course, but Bach's music sings and glows. Fischer's style is fluid and sensitive with a sound intellectual basis.

A word about the various transfers available. Get this one! I prefer it to the overly filtered transfer by Naxos, which is a lot cheaper. The version by EMI sounds restricted and harsh with a metallic clang.
