5 out of 5 stars The STANDARD for all deebee!.......2005-05-03

This album is essentially the 2 singles "The Hidden Camera" and "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" together on one disc.

"Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" is truly the greatest piece of d'n'b ever written; everything just falls into place exactly. The bassline acts as its own piece of percussion, in among the drums and the swordfighting sound effects. Truly the standard to which all jungle should be compared.

"The Hidden Camera" is an amazing piece of breakbeat; has a very spy-movie vibe to it. All in all, this is a don't miss album. If you're a fan, you owe it to yourself to hear these singles.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD immediately.......2000-09-30

This is hands-down my most valuable CD. An absolute CLASSIC. Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu is one of the most addictive dnb songs I've heard yet. It never gets boring. The Hidden Camera makes you feel sinister and voyeuristic. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Mathematical drum & bass for the motivated........1998-08-05

Photek is the end-all-be-all in this genre. He concocts vivid sound/imagery with beats, tones and subtle bass lines. This, to me, is the express purpose of drum & bass, and no one comes close to matching his skill. Minimal, yet complex, astounding, yet refined, this is the perfect introductory album to drum & bass. Die-hards may want to pick up the full-length "Modus Operandi," but this six-song collection will suffice for the just-curious. (Careful listenings may induce utopian illusions.)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1998-08-03

Photek can get a bit too loopy for me sometimes, but Risc vs. Reward has his best, especially 'The Hidden Camera' and "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu', both on top 20 UK lists throughout '97. A must buy, especially if you don't plan on picking up Modus Operandi.

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08

No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28

First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.

The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.

I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"

3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2000-06-23

This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.

Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.

Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Disc 2 much better.......2000-06-19

There's another review that sums my sentiments exactly. Disc 1 gets 2-3 stars (kind of like a rap with faster beat) But disc 2 is really good; 5 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Start With The First Volume.......2000-06-01

This set is more uneven than the first Urbal Beats, but it still contains more than a few classics of the genre. The two discs contain a lot of music for a good price--I recommend it as a next step if you like the first volume.

4 out of 5 stars purple turkish carpets.......2006-08-15

vibert's got pedigree. or doesnt, depending on who you ask. meaning, i just read a review of his kerrier district record that called him the most inessential artist in all of electronica.

i kinda get that. he's put out some of the cheesiest, unlistenable tripe ive ever heard as wagon christ (anything on ninja tune sucks... including amon tobin... who just sucks a little less). except he was also cranking it when drum n bass was kicking off, he actually grew up in england, and when the man feels like writing beats (as, say, plug), he writes some manic stuff.

and even better, he's clearly been listening to some grime :)

everyone's into flashbacks at the moment... remarc and scud got re-released, aphex did acid... yeah... and frankly, i cant really think of a better artist to write some 'ardcore than vibert. sweet sweet basslines, descending melodies, stupid frigging samples, that wicky wicky noise (you know the one) and lots of break beat.

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

(oh - and it should be 3 1/2 stars, but i dont know how to do the half... im clearly kinda stupid)

(and yeah, i know this review is about three years too late, but so what?)

Everyone and his cousin has done, or been the subject of, a remix record at this point, so it takes something special for one to stand out from the crowd. Old School Vs. New School qualifies--emphatically. A celebration of some of the Jive and Silvertone labels' best singles, it pits killer tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Kool Moe Dee, Boogie Down Productions, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Whodini, and the Stone Roses against the talents of Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), Doc Martin, Rabbit in the Moon, Aphrodite, and other well-known--and talented--remixers. With the exception of Hollis Monroe's take on R. Kelly's "Sex Me"--easily the weakest track on the album, both in its original and remixed form--all of the songs are somehow treated with respect and given a fresh life. Cook's take on A Tribe Called Quest's "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" gives the track a tropical feel, the Bassbin Twins give their take on BDP's catalog in a tribute medley, and the two takes of the Stone Roses' classic "Fools Gold"--from Grooverider and Rabbit in the Moon--bring out two different sides of a deserving song. You'll want to dig out the originals again and listen to them side by side with the remixes. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dearly dissappointed..........2000-07-03

After hearing a few tracks from the second volume I thought the first one would be even better... Yet I was extremely dissappointed when I heard the album... If you like old 80's hip-hop with boring, weak techno beats then this is the album you have been waiting for...

4 out of 5 stars A Great Remix Compilation.......2000-03-19

I was looking for a breakbeat compilation and found this. A few tracks have some sweet breakbeats, but there's so much more funk that can't be contained by just one musical subgenre. These new school remixes have taken these already great tracks and transformed them. There are a couple tracks on the CD that don't quite slide with me, but the majority are awesome. Whodini vs The Freestylers, A Tribe Called Quest vs Aphrodite, and A Tribe Called Quest vs Norman Cook especially are otherwordly and deserve to be cranked up on everyone's stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Studder scratch, studder scratch filling up the beats.......1999-05-13

Yummy scratch tracks laying down fat fast pistol oomph. If you funk the vibe, ya know that the skunk is tribe. A burning blend of aboriginal harmonies in accordance with section 12 of the Funk Nation Treaty. Fat Boy Slim brings pounds of carpet to the already cantonese tribe tune.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive mixes.......1999-04-24

Even though I'm getting sick of techno compilations, this one didn't disapoint. The remixes are fresh and original. All the Tribe remixes are incredible, especially the Aphrodite and Fat Boy Slim mixes. A great mix of house, break beat and trance versions of some classic music. But R Kelly? Why?

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS DOPE!!!! BUY IT!!!!.......1999-03-17

This is on of the best CD compilations to come out in a while. This brings back to the limelight two of my all time favorite groups, ATCQ and the Stone Roses. The first time I heard the mix of "Can I Kick It" it got me so movin I brought the house down, serious. BUY THIS CD!!!

CD Number 2 is truly amazing. I alaways remix the tracks and pull some out, but this one is consistent as is.

4 out of 5 stars Music for the post-rave generation.......2000-09-23

This is the kind of CD which provides a soundtrack to lounge to. Downtempo, ambient(ish), and breakbeats all spread across 2 CDs. Definitely a CD for the post-rave generation (those of you who've been around since the early days of dance back in the late 80s especially) who've graduated from trance/techno and are ready for music with more depth. Sit back, turn the lights down low, invite some friends over, and enjoy the company and the music.

      5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2005-03-26

This album is amazing!! One of my old roommates turned me on to it and I can't get enough. If you're even marginally fond of drum and bass or jungle you have to acquire this album somehow. The album is subtle in its politics and then turns around and slaps you with a killer beat.

5 out of 5 stars Que da base.......2003-01-16

and prepare the speakers daddy's got a new friend the neighbors gonna' hate. Just like all the jungle sky albums this CD's got Big BASE that will rattle anyone free. I bought this album in 2000 and I still love it. This musical masterpiece is pure genius for your kicks.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......1999-12-11

Their first release was great and the second is better. Flowing from Jungle to drum'n'bass without a hitch, it's in constant rotation in my player. Liquid Sky puts out another great one! Check out track 5.

      3 out of 5 stars Glad I found this.......2002-12-31

I picked this cd up for.. the same time I picked up Pimp Daddy Nash, which is also reccommended. The Cd as a whole is rather interesting. On several tracks there are vocals, which are quasi flow spoken word. Although the actual voices which speak them might not compliment the tracks fully, it definately works on some tracks, like the personell track. The thing that made me interested in the CD was the beat. The CD has a dark, bass heavy kind of abstractness to it, while remaining coherent and rhythmatic. Definately reccommend it, although it might not be worth the whole...amount to some.

Since I made this review I sought out Spacer's solo CD,
The Beamer. No wonder I liked this CD so much, Spacer
makes great music. If you like the music on this CD,
take a look at The Beamer, more involved and... better.

5 out of 5 stars Drum & bass meets electro-dub.......2002-03-20

This is a remix album based on Jammin' Unit's earlier release, "Deaf, Dub and Blind." I had never heard anything by Witchman before, but as a big fan of the original Jammin' Unit disc, I was quite impressed with this. It mixes the original material with deeper bass, and a slightly darker, more aggressive feel while retaining Jammin' Unit's more dubby, laid back vibe. Recommended for anyone who enjoyed Deaf, Dub and Blind.
