"You must take a look at the new land," Os Mutantes singer Rita Lee softly proclaims on Everything Is Possible!'s English-language rewrite of Caetano Veloso's "Baby." The Brazilian psychedelic-rock pioneers were addressing a hoped-for American-British audience, but they could also have been singing to their own country's political establishment, which didn't take kindly to the Tropicalia era's fusion of Beatles and Hendrix influences with elements of bossa nova and samba. The result continues to reverberate more than three decades later in the work of Beck, Stereolab, and Cibo Matto, not to mention on late-'90s reissues such as this. Full of beauty, self-mocking good humor, and a command of varied styles that Lennon and McCartney would've envied, this enticing music is every bit as fresh as it must've sounded to South American swingers back in the day. --Rickey Wright

this is great stuff.......2007-02-07
for those who are not familiar with the music of Os Mutantes, this is a great CD to get, it is a "best of" compiliation. Combining elements of psychedelia, samba, bossa nova, and pop music, it all blends together very well. A great CD to listen to whle relaing a the end of the day.
Trying to do the impossible.......2005-11-02
I have to give this collection 4 stars because it is the only easy way to get ahold of any Os Mutantes material. That being said, many of the most tripped out songs of Os Mutantes are left off of this collection, including Rita Lee, Top Top, Nao va se perder por ai, etc. Those who are looking for a good quick introduction to how great the music made in Brazil in the 70s are could use this as a good start. But then they should really get ahold of their albums, including Mutantes, Os Mutantes, and Jardim Electrico.
World of Os Mutantes.......2005-03-29
It takes a connoisseur of psychedelic rock and pop to know of (drumroll please) Os Mutantes. This short-lived Brazilian band made some of the most memorable psychedelic pop of the 1960s -- which is really saying something. Some of their best work is compiled in "World Psyschedelic Classics 1," although there are some glaring omissions.
This collection brings together many of the band's best songs, such as the understated charm of "Panis et Circenses," the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," and the cluttered catchiness of "Bat Macumbia." Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.
Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?
And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes and jungle drums -- as in the eerie "Premier Bonheur du Jour" -- get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards. Those tradition instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious.
The one flaw? Lesser-known albums like "Jardim Electro" and "Mutantes" are underrepresented in the selection of songs. Their first album, the self-titled "Os Mutantes" -- also probably their best ever -- is strongly emphasized. However, if you are looking for an excellent individual listen and not a representation of all their albums, then this is a very good find.
Few of the Os Mutantes albums are currently available in the U.S., which would make this the ideal introduction by default. But "World Psychedelic Classics 1" is a fairly good introduction to the band in its own right.

Great Brazilian Music.......2007-05-20
This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.
One of the best.......2007-05-14
This is probably my favorite album of all time. I purchased it about 8 years ago and listen to it regularly. Can't understand a single lyric from it (a few excepted) but it remains one of the best I own. It is soulful, enchanting, exciting, and mysterious all at once.
If you are in the mood for something different that will grow on you, try this one. You won't regret it. I promise.
For something similar and equally intoxicating, try Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" or "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays". Both fantastic choices.
Bossa Nova.......2007-03-29
I enjoy Bossa Nova, beautiful music I have enjoyed all the cd's, I have purchased.
Bossa Nova Brasil.......2006-10-29
I play this CD frequently. Love the choices of artists and songs. Shows off the legacy of some of the artists as well. Would recommend it to the many fans of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general.
Good Bossa Nova and MPB.......2004-04-13
I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.
The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.
Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

Solid all the way through, with variety too........2007-06-02
If I had to pick a "scene" in rock history that seems to transcend every pop staple, it would be those illuminary Brazillians from the late 60's. There are so many super-talented and visionary artists from that movement, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the passion and exhuberance of these albums. Caetano Veloso is one of those artists. I sometimes feel like the romantic drama and devil-may-care virtuosity of this album could drive anyone to tears, or at least to youtube, trying to find any way to vicariously experience whatever socio-political hell was responsible for an artist like Veloso to grab everything meaningful in life, shoot it out of an existential cannon; watch it float through outerspace and land in the Amazon. It sounds so futuristic, so contemporary, so pre-historic. I still listen to this album, scratching my head, wondering: "How the hell did he do that? How can anyone evoke everything through sound with seeming effortlessness?" and then I realize it is the entire experience that he is channeling: the military overthrow, the intense repression of individualistic efforts, the racial conflict and an economic overhaul felt through the impoverished ranks of a sickeningly rapid transition to modernity. All of that and just drop you to your knees beautiful songs that the most hardened death-row inmate would fall in love to. Be careful who you are listening to this with; it's sensual allure is basically immutable. This album is absolutely fantastic, and there are several from this movement. Tracks 2 and 5 will absolutely break your heart, while track 12 will leave you sweating with abstract pop largesse. Keeping in mind, that this album starts off with a genre, and perhaps even nation-defining track: Tropicalia. Good God, just buy this album.
I have never felt more comfortable recommending an album so unconditionally.
Desert Island.......2007-04-10
This album is simply divine from start to finish. During the 60s a lot of American blues and soul music was going psychedelic. The same thing was happening in Brazil with bossa nova and samba. Firstly, you can't top Caetano's tenor. I think Caetano could make an acappella record this good. He could suffice with only a woodblock. His is a sauce with a lot of cream. He is able to create and hold melody with his voice. A lot of BN singers dance around like butterflies, which is great too. But Veloso isn't afraid to emphasize in a style that is ostensibly finesse but actually power. The second track "Clarice" is BN so stoned and slowed down it's just one of the most soulful things I've heard. Contrasted by "Clara" whose xylophone backed whimsical gameshow sound is tropicalia at its best, flying below some of the cheesier tendencies of the genre. The violins are fantastic, which is a suprise because orchestration ruined so many Brazilan records (Phillips & EMI). The percussion is on point throughout--a wood block never sounded so wooden. One of the best qualities of great music is its ability to wind, spiral, and layer. These songs sound new every single time. I still save it for sunny Sundays. This is the Pet Sounds of Brazil. I'll take this one to the island though even though/because I don't speak Portuguese.
If you don't understand Portugese..........2007-01-15
This record is an interesting historical document of a Brazilian artist digesting many of the influences of pop music in the late 1960s and applying it to his art. In other words, it is both derivative and original at the same time.
It is melodic, the arrangements are nice. The styles represented are rather ecclectic.
I can't make any judgments on the lyrical content since it is sung in Portugese and there is no translation of the extensive lyrics on the enclosed lyric sheet. The music alone is not enough to hold my interest on repeated listening, and with no lyrics, the album is of limited value to me.
By the way, the album is monophonic, and it sounds like many pop music efforts of its time -- attempting to squeeze vocals and multimiked orchestral arrangements and guitars/drums all into one center channel. The sound is dated: compressed, and a little tinny.
I'm sure that at the time this sounded groundbreaking to some people. Listening in a modern setting, apart from the fact that it is melodic, whereas other pop music at the time of its releast was getting increasingly agressive, it is good music but not great.
Oh Snap.......2006-04-09
Oh. What? This album could be the hottest. All tropicilia albums are something to check out, but this one rides into the sunset. Out of all those fools...this one is in the top three. Definetly his best album. If you like anyhting. You'll find something to like on this. Essential.
Great Lyrics.......2003-11-28
This is an excellent album. Caetano's records of 1967 and 1969, when released were like nothing else played in Brazil at the time.
Caetano's lyrics are always excellent, and, in my opinion, he as yet to outdo himslef after his first two records. He and Chico Buarque de Holand are the premier lyricists in Brazilian music.
A testament to that is my memory, as I recently found out I could recall by heart all the lyrics for all the songs in these albums, more than 30 years after learning them at three years old.
Never mind that I have lived in foreign country, speaking in a foreign language for many years.
i was delighted to see the CD's at amazon, and just had to purchase them.

More like 4.5 stars- Psychedelic madness from South America.......2007-07-26
Os Mutantes were a bunch of crazy fellers (and one fellerette) who blasted their way out of Sao Paulo with this, their 1968 debut album. Their sound (influenced by Brazil's "Tropicalia" movement, which combined traditional art forms with modern European ans American ones) was an intoxicating mixture of rock, psyhedelia, bossa nova, and whatever else the group could get its hands on. It was a crazy, energetic sound, drenched in psychotic fuzz guitars, galloping rhythms, freaked-out keyboards, sunbaked vocals, and wonky horn sections that bounce in and out of the mix with admirable abandon. It's a mixture that promises an insane good time, and on the best tracks here, that's exactly what it delivers: "Panis Et Circensis" opens the album with some blasting horns and a delerious, infectious melody. "A Minha Menina" is pure laid-back insanity, an irresistable blast of sunsplashed vocals, rumbling conga(-like objet)s , and an unpreidentedly catchy buzzing guitar. A rollicking good time. There's also "Bat Macumba," an all-out pounder with some of the coolest guitars, EVER. "Baby" is a sensual, lopsided ballad, and "Ave Genghis Kahn" is as wigged-out as anything early Pink Floyd ever did.
Unfortunatly, not everything on the album is as mind-blowing as those five. "Senhor F" and "O Reloio," although they meet their requisite craziness quota, are largely forgettable. The album also begins to drag towards the end, with "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour" and "Tempo No Tempo" not rising to the standards set by the best songs here. The dreamy "Trem Fantasma" is a little better, but it still manages to overstay its welcome by a couple of minutes.
Still, even the worst songs here still have something going for them, and the sound of the album is so unique that it's refreshing to hear it in any form. Connoisseurs of psyched out rock and "world music" (gosh, I hat that term) would do well to chek this out.
Damn fine on some tracks. Santana meets Electric Prunes........2007-01-12
Really enjoyed this album, the critics were right, transcends language barriers. The licks and psychedelic feel grooved to the bone. Most songs slow or poppy but so where some songs on Sgt. Pepper. (Track #2 A Minha Menina) and (#7 Bat Macumba) sear the brain with waves and (#5 Baby) with the sultry voice against the electric guitar. (#11 Ave, Genghis Khan) is good finish. I'd recommend it, leaves me wanting more from this group.
An eclectic classic.......2006-08-01
There was lots of experimentation used in this album, some would say to the point of recklessness, but from the abrupt song changes to the blistering fuzzed-out guitar laid on top of tropicalia tracks, it all works, and makes for a truly amazing sounding album. Early on, Os Mutantes put out sounds ranging from tropicalia to bright 60s pop to tender ballads to blistering guitar distortion and feedback, sometimes all in the same song. The first 30 seconds of the first song of the album alone consists of fanfare, soft vocal harmonies, and bright pop meloldies with racing trumpets in the background. Even though I don't speak a word of Portuguese, I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and I got into this album more than I ever got into any album.
Ave, Os Mutantes.......2005-04-19
It takes a connoisseur of psychedelic rock and pop to know of (drumroll please) Os Mutantes. This short-lived Brazilian band made some of the most memorable psychedelic pop of the 1960s -- which is really saying something, given the era that they thrived in. Call it psychetropicalia.
And their self-titled debut is probably the best work they ever did, without a single dud track. "Panis et Circenses" kicks things off with a horn solo, and then with a stretch of swooning acid-pop and some angelic-sounding voices. From there on, we get a fun, perky pop song laced with more horns, keyboards and wacky sound effects.
The stuff that follows is much in the same vein, from the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," the downtempo warbles of "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," and other songs full of Brazilian spunk, sonic clutter, sixties guitar solos, piano ripples, and catchy little songs that never get old. Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.
Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, non-catchy stretches of noise, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?
And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes, panpipes and jungle drums get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar harmonize, and piano is overlaid with train whistles.
Those traditional instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. And the tropicalia gives it an earthy, unique edge that most psychedelica lacks. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious. The most typical aspect of it is the vocal harmonies -- other than that, there is simply nothing to compare this to.
There hasn't really been a band like Os Mutantes since, and until someone decides to revive that underrated sound, there probably won't be again. Mad, wild, crazy, and absolute bliss from beginning to end.

Justly Praised.......2007-06-30
A lot of reviews on Amazon are so effusive and undiscriminating that it makes me distrust all of these Amazon reviews. So I've been quite wary of all the hyperbolic praise of various CDs but have to say that this is an extraordinary record. Anyone interested in music must buy this CD -- it has a wonderful, freewheeling and lyrical quality to the music and the singing that really stands out both in Brasil and worldwide.
Great album from Milton Nascimento.......2007-05-21
This is one of the best albuns by Milton Nascimento. Great repertoire, excellent vocals. Don't miss it.
Essential.......2006-10-31
This is one of my desert island discs along with Milton's "Courage". People coming from the jazz realm may want to start with that album or perhaps his collaboration with Wayne Shorter. People coming from the rock realm should start here. The beauty and depth of this album is amazing. The many Brazilian influences along with those from the most progressive pop/rock Americans/Brits joined together with the talent and attitudes of the musicians make for an undeniable classic. Track 11 could have come forth from my psyche if I had the talent to create such a thing. That's why musicians are to be cherished because they (at their best) are expressing those things in this better language. I certainly cherish Nascimento, Borges, and the rest involved with this masterpiece.
The Best Brazilian Folk Rock Album Ever?.......2006-07-05
The recent World Cup sparked me to go searching for Brazilian music. I was familiar with a few tunes from Nascimento's Clube da Esquina LP, having seen him perform several times in Chicago. But wow-- nearly every song on this 1972 disk is either melodically compelling or flat-out inspirational. Take a listen to "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser," "Cravo e Canela," "Nuvem Cigana," and "Cais." If you ever meet anyone curious about Brazilian music, this is one of the places to start.
Just buy it. Stop reading and just buy it. NOW!.......2006-05-27
I've listened to this album 9-10 times in the last three days since I received it, and I haven't tired yet. In fact, it only whets my appetite for more. If everything in the world I had was taken from me, and I had only 15 bucks left to my name, I'd go on out and buy this album again. Because it would sweeten the agony of my loss and make life possible again. You think I'm exaggerating? If you have any soul at all, if you have even a vestigal appreciation of good music, you will love this album. I have no less than 5000 albums in my collection, and right now this one is in the top ten. Think: Abbey Road. Think: OK Computer. Think: Gil E Jorge. Think: What's Going On. Think: MBV's Loveless. It's that good.

Agreed with David McKinney's review fully. Caetano's quote in the liner notes says it all: "Gil believes in God. I believe in him."
This man Gil in my estimation stands with Mother Teresa, Vaclav Havel, Martin Luther King....it's no wonder that Brazilians burst into tears when he appears....his songs have the same effect on me and I can hardly speak a lick of Portuguese!
8th Wonder of the World?.......2007-05-17
It's entirely possible that someone, somewhere, at some time, has created a recording of greater honesty, peace, and pure musical achievement than this one--I just haven't heard it yet.
Gil is a musical prophet, statesman, and healer; I regard this record as one of the greatest artistic achievements of humankind.
To know that a human being currently residing on the planet is capable of this is comforting and inspiring to me more than words could possibly convey.
Still the master.......2007-05-08
A very nice mix of old and new Gil sounds. Alive as always.

Brasiliero, a wonderfully diverse introduction to Brazilian music, is a sophisticated blend of folk-pop and cool jazz, as embraced by artists both well and little known, in the most popular styles: samba, bossa nova, and MBP (musica popular Brasileiro). As with Cuban music, the greatest influence on Brazilian music came from African slaves who were imported to farm sugar, tobacco, and cotton plantations. With that influence comes a complex rhythmic structure and a prevailing sense of melancholy. Bearing this out, "Daca de Solidao" ("Dance of Solitude") is deliciously thick as performed by the dusky-voiced Beth Carvalho. Chico Cesar's "Mama Africa" is a perfect sociopolitical pop hit, blending hard-hitting lyrics with bouncy percussion and Jamaican reggae. Other standouts include Jorge Ben's wiggly feel-good romp "O Namorado da Viuva" ("The Widow's Boyfriend") and Joao Bosco's dancing guitar on "Vatapa," which pays homage to the traditional dish of the same name. --Paige La Grone

A Brazilian musical journey.......2006-06-14
This album has a great deal of variety.Putumayo excels in its acoustic compilations (along with "African Odyssey","Gardens of Eden"&"Greek Odyssey"),and this is DEFINITELY one of them.
There are different styles, from thoughtful bossa nova to passionate samba.Jorge Ben sings a bouncy song about a young man wooing a rich widow;Joao Bosco rhythmically sings a recipe for a Brazilian shrimp dish called vatapa;Clara Nunes passionately sings of the suffering of Brazilians throughout history;Chico Buarque (uncle of the popular singer Bebel Gilberto)sings a rapturous ode to the samba singer. It's got variety and stands on its own.If you want a good introduction to Brazilian music, this is a compilation to get.
I listen to it over and over.......2006-01-31
I love every song, and find myself singing them, even though I do not speak portugese.
It's all good.......2004-08-31
One of my favorite CDs. I never tire of listening to it. I love all the tunes, esp the infectious Take Sarava sung by Sylvia Torres and the lovely rendition of Aquas de Marco by Rosa Passos. Overall, very well produced.
A cute brazilian blend.......2004-04-09
I have a little more than a year learning portuguese and I love the brazilian culture: the food, the folklore and the music. Brasileiro is a good CD for those who wants to introduce theirselves to the exotic and sensual rythm of the samba, the MPB, the forró and the bossa nova. "Take Saravá" is a nice song and you need to hear "Clarao de Lua" or the slaves's song of "Canto das tres racas" for understand the passion and the culture of the brazilian people. Beth Carvalho and her sexy voice are wonderful in "Danca de Solidao" and "Berekeré", that is include in the soundtrack of the movie "Woman on Top" has a cadence without equal. You will learn that Bahia is the "land of hapiness" and the inspiration of a lot of composers, musicians and famous writers, it's the land of the magic and creation...
After listen this disc you will understand the meaning of "saudade" that is a mixture of loneliness, sorrow and nostalgia. The guide included in this Putumayo CD is very educative and take your hand for conduce you inside the brazilian sounds. Enjoy it. Vc vai gostar demais. Beijao.
Perfect in the right setting.......2002-09-24
I've heard this CD a few times at my ex-girlfriend's house over the past few years. While I enjoyed it, I have to admit I was a bit snobbish about it's light and happy interpretations when compared to the older more serious recordings of Antonio Carlos Jobim's work.
Well, a few weeks ago I was vacationing alone in Cabo San Lucas getting some much needed R&R. My last morning there I was having a nice relaxing breakfast on an open stone patio at the beautiful Hotel Hacienda overlooking the Pacific through a nice layer of trees. One of the friendly waiters put some music on that just made the whole setting and experience so much better. I was really enjoying it. The whole time I was sitting there eating and marveling at the gorgeous scenery, I knew I had heard this recording before and was certain I had it somewhere at home.
When I arrived home I was surprised that I couldn't find it anywhere in my house. Don't you hate it when you're looking for something you're certain you have? It wasn't until a few days ago I realized where I had heard this CD, and then I finally understood. I love this CD, I just had to experience in the right frame of mind.
So if you want to escape the concrete jungle if only for a few minutes, put this CD on, pour yourself a cool drink, relax and let the flowing melodies take you to a beautiful tropical paradise.

More than merely a variant on the traditional samba beat, the bossa nova has had a rich life since it emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. It was introduced to American audiences by returning jazz musicians, including guitarist Charlie Byrd, who shared some its most famous tunes with saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz's sweet, breathy tenor saxophone was its ideal American voice, and the bossa nova quickly became a popular craze, spurred by Getz's recordings with the composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto (especially Getz/Gilberto). While the phenomenon would soon run its course, leaving a mass of forgettable recordings in its wake, it persisted as part of the rhythmic vocabulary of jazz and as a potent, transforming folk form in Brazil. This compilation includes the greatest hits of Getz's various collaborations, but it also presents a significant and varied sampling of bossa's Brazilian forms, including the politically charged tropicalismo movement founded by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. --Stuart Broomer

Soundtrack of a Life.......2007-07-04
I love this CD. I bought it originally on a whim about 15 years ago, sort of by accident, and since then it's been one of my favorites of all time. When I fell for this CD, I thought maybe I'd love all Bossa Nova, and I do like a lot of it, but this CD in particular just flows beautifully and is really a great collection of individual songs. Recently I bought another copy for myself (my old one is scratched, I need to go digital!), and one for a friend who heard the music at my house and loved it. I don't know if this is the soundtrack of *my* life, but it definitely someone's life soundtrack.
1959: Frankie Would Say, "IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR!".......2007-04-16
If you have read my review for the album Bossa Nova for Lovers then you know that I've only just recently discovered that I've been in love with Bossa Nova for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. (And if you haven't read that review, I'd like to know why not! I mean, if you're not hanging on my every word I'm just going to stop nailing them up there. ; )
I purchased two Bossa Nova collections as soon as I realized that "Bossa Nova" was the name of the musical genre that my heart has been carrying around for the past 43 years. (I do catch on, but slowly.) I acquired the aforementioned set because I'm a real "lover" -- yeah, bring it on ladies! (But I'm a "fighter", too, so watch yer step, dude!) And I simultaneously bought "NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE", and danged if I can tell ya which one I like best; they're both Boss! I might prefer this collection overall, only by the slimmest margin, but "For Lovers" includes Astrud Gilberto's "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and lacking that song, my smile would be turned upside down. : (
I found JOHN CARLIN's liner notes included with this compact disc to be very informative, so I'm copying them below:
"Brazilian music is American music. It comes from the same multicultural fusion that spawned blues, jazz, salsa, reggae and rock. In Brazil it is called samba. Samba fused three sounds that thrived in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century: West African polyrhythms, Portuguese melodies, and Native American chants. [*By chants were you aware that I'm part Mohawk Indian? I want 40 acres and a jackazz! Oh wait, I'M the jackazz.*] This potent combination was turned into a classic myth by the poet Vinicius de Moraes, whose play "Black Orpheus" brought Afrocentric Brazilian culture and samba to international attention. In the well-known film version, Orpheus dies for love, but his artistic spirit lives on in a young boy who picks up Orpheus' guitar and plays his song to make the sun rise. The beauty of the music makes the film's heavy-handed theme credible. Orpheus' song, "A Felicidade", composed by a young Antonio Carlos Jobim, comes out of samba culture while effortlessly introducing something new and even more beautiful to the world. That sound later became known as bossa nova, the new wave. It was created by Jobim and de Moraes along with the great singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. Inspired by samba, along with the sophistication of Debussy and Cole Porter, Jobim began writing simple, beautiful songs that suggested, but were never burdened by their eccentric harmonies, asymmetrical structures and abstract thoughts.
"Within a few years, American jazz musicians like Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz began to sample these new exotic songs. By 1962, Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" performed by Getz with Joao Gilberto and his wife Astrud, on the Verve label, became the biggest hit in the U.S., the year before the Beatles arrived. [*According to my Billboard book, it was '64.*] The success of the song and the bossa beat created a pop formula capitalized upon by Astrud, Sergio Mendes, Walter Wanderley and others throughout the mid-Sixties. At the same time, Jobim and Gilberto - as well as musicians like the Tamba Trio, Edu Lobo, Baden Powell and Marcos Valle - continued to refine bossa and samba into one of the finest means of expression in the world of pop music.
"By the late `60s, a new generation of artists began to emerge in Brazil from the Afrocentric northeastern state of Bahia. Led by Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, they merged bossa with rock by adding more aggressive beats and avoiding romantic lyrics. This new movement, called tropicalismo, demonstrated the continued vitality of Brazilian music and that samba, like the blues, grew from the multicultural character of the Americas to become one of the great art forms of the 20th century."
~ John Carlin
I saw the movie "BLACK ORPHEUS" in the late `80s because I tremendously enjoyed Vince Guaraldi's song "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", which I knew had first appeared on his album titled, "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus." I don't recall being much impressed with the movie back then, but seeing it a second time is suddenly a priority for me. ("NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE" begins with Jobim's "A Felicidade" taken directly from the 1959 "BLACK ORPHEUS" soundtrack. I feel it's spoiled a bit by the voices and various other audio portions of the film's soundtrack, but historically, it's still the perfect opening for a Bossa Nova set. And I can't tell you how cool I think it is that Bossa Nova was introduced to the world at large in the same year that I entered into it.)
The so-called "Interludes" on this set are merely 15-30 second snippets of drums, ocean and street sounds, etc. I'm not sure what their purpose is, and I could have done without them, thank you very much, but they don't diminish my listening pleasure because the tunes are simply Mmmm, Mmmm good! I swear, I love Bossa Nova. My only wish is that some of the tracks were extended: it seems that no sooner has a particular rhythm and melody enveloped me and begun carving grooves into my heart and soul than it comes to an end and we're off to the next delicious slice of Bossa Nova. Oh well, "Leave `em wanting more" is the old entertainment maxim.
I dig every song on "NOVA BOSSA: RED HOT ON VERVE", although Caetano Veloso's "Superbacana" is pretty goofy. Why do I see The Brady Bunch in my mind when that one plays? No, seriously, why? But this is a funky Fun Fiesta; less Saudade than the Bossa Nova for Lovers disc, which is perfectly fine with me because now I have a Bossa Nova concert for both moods. If you too have a heart for Bossa Nova, I can guarantee your satisfaction with this first-class set. And speaking of the heart, always remember what that great Brazilian pianist Yoey O'Dogherty once said to a group of budding Bossa Nova musicians in 1963: "Listen with your heart, speak with your fingers, and love with your-- Hey, who took my beer?"
Impressive survey of classical themes!.......2005-02-27
This is a very representative selection of the golden spirit of this sensual and contagious rhythm . from Luis Bonfa, a real authority in this subject to Caetano Veloso. Literally a human gallery will pass the threshold of the mere entertaining showing the most remarkable exponents of this original genre. You will listen to that guitar legend : Baden Powell; Stan Getz and his classical and unmistakeable tune sax ; Joao Gilberto and Sergio Mendes.
You will understand the real meaning of the famous Brazilian expression saudade when you listen this CD.
Highly gratifying.
Música brasileira agradável às orelhas.......2004-01-04
I became a fan of Brasilian music when I became a fan of the Portuguese language, which was soon after I learned exactly what Rio de Janeiro is. For years, I had heard "A Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") and didn't know what it was, but when I finally discovered it, I wanted to have a copy. So, I bought this album. Although, to me, that is the highlight of the album, the other tracks are not let-downs by any means. The track that opens up the album is the beautiful "A Felicidade" ("Happiness") from the 1959 film "Black Orpheus" or, as it is in Portuguese "Orfeo Negro." The songs continue to be beautiful throughout. My personal favorites are the two aforementioned as well as "Agua de Beber" ("Water to Drink"), "Bim Bom," "Superbacana," "Aquele Abraço" (loosely, "I Embrace That One") "Águas de Março" ("Waters of March"), and "Corcovado," the most romantic of all the tracks. I really do not understand why the disc is advertised as "perfect for romance" because it really is not. The vast majority of the songs are a bit more fast-paced and the lyrics tend to not be about romance, and the interludes do tend to be a simple cacophony of street sounds from São, Bahia, or Rio. Don't get me wrong, the disc is great, but if you're looking for romantic, try the Isley Brothers or one of those Time Life "Body and Soul" discs. However, if you're looking for good Brasilian classics, pick this up.
a real baby bopper.......2003-06-26
this cd is the bomb. my 16 month old son loves to listen to the cool sounds this cd beams out and jigs along with a smooth yet syncopated ease. it truly is a voyage of discovery from beginning to end, sure enough to bring a smile, forlorn regrets, and maybe even a romantic tear. the powerful ebb and sway of the music reminds me of the seaside, and the bouyant energy of the culture bringing us this fine music.

Excellent CD.......2007-05-04
From the time i received this CD, it had never left my CD player and had been listening to it over end over again. I don't speak Portuguese, but have been listening to it for a long time now. Gal has widened my appreciation of Brazilian music, samba and bossa nova. This CD is highly recommended. Muito obrigado!!!
Unspectacular, but very nice - -.......2007-04-06
(should have had Kristan, her official translator on hand; only kidding)- she handled the conversation pretty well, actually - - - sure didn't sound like a 61 year old woman; doesn't look her age either. Four superb back-up musicians -- some wiggy guitar changes snuck-in there, good bass and subtle percussion. Gal Costa sounded fine, and it's simply a nice addition to my collection - - - one I'll play on our boat while cruising in the Gulf, or out by the pool until we're able to return to beautiful Rio next year.
FOR EXPORT.......2007-03-08
It was a great pleasure to find a so high quality live recording, much better than anyone could expect. Recorded in Tokio, with special setlist and made specially for exportation and overseas countries, whoever appreciates Brazilian music with the best musical arrangements could have been performed, will enjoy and ask for ENCORE!
Gal is in your Livingroom.......2006-10-02
Awesome! She says, " Ifeel Like I'm in your Livingroom". She truly is in this small acoustical environement. Her voice never fails her; but I was surprised at how low her conversational voce was for a Diva, that can outdo anyone in vocal range. Obrigada, GAl. So if you want the brazilian classic bossa nova/samba jazz created by the masters; Jobim,de Moraes, et.,only Gal can muster that feat vocally.

This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey Guerra

Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19
It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performing a main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:
a) Tom Ze was there.
b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.
c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."
I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.
Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.
pretty swell.......2006-06-27
if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.
The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26
One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.
I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.
I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....
More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24
Wow! this is a must have.
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.
