Bristol's Massive Attack released a classic with their first album, Blue Lines, but only those who were paying careful attention noticed; soon, they were overshadowed by the likes of Tricky and Portishead, who were colleagues. But not so after the release of Protection, which sported a massive hit and was just as critically acclaimed as their first album. (The hit was the title track, for which Everything but the Girl's Tracy Thorn lent her divine pipes--a move that made the act's name, and also presaged EBTG's move to the dance floor.) Eschewing the showmanship of their scene mates, Massive prefer subtler soundscapes and using a diverse range of vocalists (including Horace Andy, Nicolette, and Tricky) who give them a number of flavors and moods with which to work. Protection is an understated album with a rich palette; it reveals more of itself on repeated listens, growing better--and deeper--each time. --Randy Silver --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars princess tracey!.......2007-05-11

as usual, i order a cd like 'protection' for a song or two. then i get a great surprise.

in this case, it's the title track, with vocals by tracey thorn. thorn, along with lisa gerrard, dusty springfield, doris day, billie holiday, aretha franklin and a few others, has a uniquely gorgeous voice and styling that is immediately identifiable for so many things--a social scene, a certain era, a mood.

unlike the others, she has still to get her due and fame as a singer. here's hoping that people will use her and get her heard as much as the law will allow.

4 out of 5 stars I'm surprised that this album is so underated........2006-05-22

A lot of people prefer blue lines over protection and I just don't understand that. I found protection to be great. Possibly one of the best CDs that Massive attack has ever released other than Mezzanine. Eurochild is mindblowingly amazing. Karmacoma, Better things, Heat Miser, weather storm and spying glass are also exceptional. The only reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is cause of the last track. A cover of the Doors, Light my fire that, to me, seems very pointless.

5 out of 5 stars timeless album!!.......2006-04-18

Eleven years have pass since Massive Attack came out with this album, and when i listen to it, still sounding as fresh and new as that then it?s an amazing work , with the colaboration of the also amaizing Craig Armstrong, Tracy Thorn and Tricky .

I have always thought that melancholy it?s the ?nice?part of being sad, well this is the feeling in this CD . With sublime work on the piano made by Armstrong and the angel voice of Tracy Thorn (Everything But The Girl) this three guys made a classic album that is going to last forever , full of inovative sounds, vocals and deep feeling. While others reviewers think of it as a dark album (which really is , i?m not going to desagree) i think of it more as a beawtiful and melancholic album but no matter how we feel it, this is a most have!!!!

No matter what kind of music you like this is one of those albums that have something for everybody unless you like Paulina Rubio

If this album would not have included ?Lite My Fire? this could have been call PERFECTION instead of PROTECTION

4 out of 5 stars Massive Attack does not go the protective route on Sophomore CD.......2006-04-15

After hearing about Massive Attack from a friend I decided to check out some of their songs. The production on this album is completely solid. If this album was nothing but an instrumental piece it would recieve 5 stars from me, however, the lyrics and vocals of several of the songs (more directly Karmacoma & Three)brought the albums rating down one star.

Album highlights include: "Protection," "Spying Glass," "Weather Storm," and "Sly"
Album embarissment: "Light my Fire (Live)" -- this is the only track I skip when listening to the record.

If you like Massive Attack I would recommend listening to Telepopmusik. As soon as I put in this CD I thought of them. Amazing french Trip-hop band known for the song "Breathe"

i like how the people who wrote negative reviews, did so in the year 2005. this album was released in '94. back in those days this album was excellent, with tracy singing in the right key and all! more than one can say for portishead. yeah, of course newer chill albums are going to sound better and fresher. if you spend all day listening to bt, then yeah, kraftwerk is going to sound a bit boring. does that mean that kraftwerk's albums sucked? NO! hell NO!

This is the studio work of London's prodigious dub godfather, Mad Professor, who takes Massive Attack's Protection album as raw material to create a completely new experience. Bits are added, dropped out, accentuated, run through sonic effects, drenched in reverb, turned inside out until the songs disappear and in their place emerge reborn textural soundscapes. No Protection gives a sort of discursive aural commentary on Protection's original songs, pointing out all the obscured details--the minutest percussive rings and beeps, the most mesmerizing bass loops. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars great dub music...plus great album cover art!.......2005-11-19

i might be the only person who has this dub remix album but has never heard the original Massive Attack songs! so, perhaps my feelings on this cd are a bit more free of speculation than the average reviewer...but i love this cd! i'm a fan of dub and i've only got a mild appreciation for Mad Professor's work; but this collection really sees his talents shine and his production values soar to new heights. each cut has a strange sound; stradling old dub ethics with some more modern stylings. the beauty of it is that the warmth of the songs is kept alive and it does not feel like a cold studio effort. well done.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2005-07-13

Anything by Massive Attack and anything by Mad Professor is great by me. I love it all but not by itself, but in a mix with other genres.

    2 out of 5 stars D-U-L-L.......2004-04-12

I really enjoy dub, from the old-school Trojan stuff up through Burning Spear, LKJ, etc., and I have a couple Mad Professor CDs. While sometimes overly busy, both have some fun, interesting stuff. I'd heard that "No Protection" bears little resemblance to "Protection." No problem, I thought, it'll be fun to check out what the Mad Professor brings to the project. Inexplicably, he abandons his usual kitchen-sink approach, and what we get here is dishwater-dull. The first few tracks are enjoyable, melllll-ow ear candy. The rest is aural wallpaper. (The last song is an absolute waste of time, but you'll likely be asleep by then.) Buy this only if you're looking for something to crash to.

    1 out of 5 stars No Connection.......2004-02-20

"Protection" was Massive Attack`s worst record, but this remix album is even worse, destroying the few interesting moments that the band`s second effort had. Remixer Mad Professor deconstructs the songs and gives them a dub/ reggae-oriented sound, something that`s decent enough during the first two/ three tracks but soon becomes terribly uninspired, repetitive, boring and formulaic.
There are no variations or contrasts in this remixes, the process is always the same and the album seems endless, almost impossible to listen through in one sitting while managing to remain awake. Seriously, this is a major disappointment, and certainly one of the most monotonous, one-dimensional and flat records around.
    For fans and completists only.

5 out of 5 stars Massive Attacks "No Protection" (Reinterpreted Via Dub).......2004-02-14

Massive Attack, after having being (unfair) criticized, after the release of their second Album "Protection", handed over the Original Master Tapes to U.K. Dub Cut-and-paste mastermind "The Mad Professor", who subsequently, took the original source material completely apart, deconstructed, incorporated Dub-reggae sampling and completely Rebuild the album with a much harder (but, Dub-influenced) sound.....(which was what the original "Protection" album was heavily Criticized for lacking).....every track has been completely reworked, to incorporate a thicker more sampled, and Trip-Hop styled sound, Tracks such as the album titled "Protection", "Karmacoma", & "Spying Glass" have had the vocals heavily "Reverbed" & "Distorted" to produce something that is recognisable, yet far removed from the original's Electronica-styled sound, and the surround & resonance move this version into a sound space that the original couldn't possibly hope to occupy, and therefore this makes it a tremendous accompaniment to the original album, rather than a replacement for it....

    5 out of 5 stars NMS's Second Coming.......2006-06-07

This album is a hard, raw, and dark trip into the minds of bigg jus and orko. The beats reflect the dark trippy uptempo orko style as well as some diversity in beats. If you liked the first NMS, get this one for sure. If you can't decide which one to get, I'd say get the first one to warm your mind up for this one. Both are deadly, but the first is their masterpeice in my humble opinion, this one is more diverse than the first in terms of beats and lyrical content. If you sleep too long, you might never wake up. Open your mind to the real sounds of orko and bigg jus. Also, buy up their solo projects. They are the best dark political rapper/ producers to date and they are very INTELLIGENT. peace.

5 out of 5 stars More dope raps from Orko Elohiem and Bigg Jus.......2006-04-01

Great album! The disclaimer inside states that this album is not playa rap and if that's your thing, steer far clear of this album. It's way to good and deep to be bling rap. Very political and super-fast flow over the best production since the last NMS or Rubberoom album. You probably will not understand this album the first couple of listens, because the flow is too darn fast. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. Bigg Jus makes every previous MC (except Gift of Gab) look like they're rappin in slowmo. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!
