This is an ideal KMFDM album for both the fan and the uninitiated alike. Led by mastermind Sasha Konietzko, the band's defining elements are on full display: staccato machine rhythms, languidly angry lead vocals, choruses of female backing vocals and lyrics full of vague calls to action. "Money" and "Sex on the Flag" are trademark KMFDM techno-metal with good guitar riffs, while "Help Us/Save Us ..." and "Bargeld" are imaginatively programmed and rigidly soulful. The adventurous "Spiritual House" and satirical "We Must Awaken" add diversity to the album's overall feel. Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

Lil Wayne Is in my opinion, the king of mixtapes right now. He is avereging about 1 mixtape every three months. This Mixtape is Awesome. Alot of his other mixtapes have people from his record label, and you only get to hear Weezy on one of the verses. However, on this mixtape he does it mainly by himself. This is more like a full cd or two. Great punchlines, I had to rewind a couple of times because I was dumb founded. Definitely worth the buy. Cant wait for his next mixtape!

Since Toby Keith's commercial success and canny image manipulation show how shrewd he is, perhaps the best explanation for songs as lackluster as "Note to Self" (a generic Rolling Stones arrangement with a hokey lyric) and "Runnin' Block" (about bedding an unattractive woman for the benefit of a buddy) are either laziness or pandering. On White Trash with Money, his first release on his own Show Dog imprint (and without longtime producer James Stroud), Keith occasionally appears to be stretching himself--on the string-laden balladry of "A Little Too Late," the tender "Crash Here Tonight," and perhaps his finest vocal performance to date on "Too Far This Time"--but often seems to be coasting. "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," "Grain of Salt," and "Brand-New Bow" are never less (and little more) than dumb fun, while "Can't Buy You Money" is a clever twist on the "money can't buy you love" adage. The most contentious track here, "Ain't No Right Way," is just waving a red flag at those who refuse to reduce complex issues to simple black-and-white. Keith insists that he only writes as many songs as he needs to record; this time, some quality control might have required writing a few more. --Don McLeese

I have generally really enjoyed Toby Keith in the past. I respect his integrity and songwriting skills, but this album diappoints. At it's best, it offers little in the way of new sounds, new ideas, or new flavors. At it's worst, it's dim and, in some cases offensive. None of these songs excited me (like "Beer For My Horses" or "Let's Talk About Me" or wooed me like "I Love This Bar" or "Wish I Didn't Know".

Songs like "Running Block" are downright offensive (and no, I'm not overweight, I just have compassion).

Right on the Money.......2007-07-18

An excellent compilation of Eddie Money's music. It's got all the hits I remember turning up on the radio back in the 80s. Eddie's not doing anything fancy, just providing great, solid rock from the 80s. In the era of hair bands, Eddie focused on the tunes. This CD would make for excellent road music for sure. Great choice for 80s rock fans. Particularly good songs, and there are a number of them, are:

If you are a fan of blues based rock, this CD is for you. If you are learning about the BLACK CROWES for the first time, this CD is for you. To me this is the best BLACK CROWES CD and it should be listed as a greatest hits record for all of the good songs. 17 years after its release, I still enjoy this one.

THE BLACK CROWES $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM........2007-02-06

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary debut album entitled "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of America's favorite sons. I give you one of Georgia's pride and joy's, THE BLACK CROWES. This legendary album was originally released in 1990 on Compact Disc on the Def American Recordings Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary debut album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE BLACK CROWES have always fascinated me. Like GUNS N' ROSES, THE BLACK CROWES seemed to be on the right track of emulating great legendary bands such as THE ROLLING STONES and AEROSMITH. For a while, it even seemed possible that a band like THE BLACK CROWES could even sound better than THE STONES and AEROSMITH. When brothers Chris Robinson on lead vocals and Rich Robinson on lead guitar met up and joined forces with Jeff Cease on rhythm guitar, Steve Gorman on drums and Johnny Colt on bass, THE BLACK CROWES were born and Rock n' Roll was in for a treat and a big surprise. THE BLACK CROWES frontman and lead singer Chris Robinson would attempt in becoming Rock's next big sex symbol on stage and give you dance moves that would rival and compare to that of Jagger and Tyler. As time went by, Robinson has successfully achieved and accomplished this difficult task. To add more, Robinson sings and belts his songs with such extreme power and emotion, that he gives the music an additional kick and climatic power that makes you feel like you are listening to real Rock n' Roll. THE BLACK CROWES style of music brings back the legendary Rock n' Roll music of its glorious past. THE CROWES love to jam to the Blues sound and the music of their southern rock roots. When THE BLACK CROWES recorded their debut album, it was history repeating itself only this time, the music was a more "in your face" type style and far more improved. In my opinion, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well made album.

I will list and briefly review all of the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Twice As Hard," (This is a very enjoyable song. This song has a mixture of the Blues and Southern Rock music. I love the way Rich and Jeff play their guitars in this one. They make their guitars scream and harmonize beautifully together like the way guitars were meant to sound like, breathtaking. Chris sings this song with such raw power and energy that he shakes this song to its very foundations and bares its roots.) (2.) "Jealous Again," (This is another well recorded Rocker that has some feel of life to it and a good beat that will give you tingles and goose bumps all over your body and make you want to dance.) (3.) "Sister Luck," (This is another well recorded slow Rocker. In my opinion, this song sounds alot like a ROLLING STONES song. Rich and Jeff do not play their guitars hard in the beginning, but they do make up for it by stepping it up and take the music into the next level or phase by daring to grind their guitars in your face with their blistering playing. This song sounds beautiful. Chris sings and belts this song out like a blues singer.) (4.) "Could I've Been So Blind," (This is another powerful Rocker that dares to Rock in your face. Rich and Jeff play guitars so well together that its like a perfect Rock n' Roll marriage made in heaven. Chris sings this Rocker with such power and emotion that he gives this Rocker alot of additional raw energy resulting in making this Rocker a whole lot better.) (5.) "Seeing Things," (This is a well recorded slow Rocker which shows the raw power and blistering lead vocals of Chris Robinson. Chris belts out this slow Rocker like he is singing the Blues. Chris actually makes you feel this slow Rocker along with him. Chris dares to bare the roots of this slow Rocker to its knees before your very eyes. This slow Rocker will leave you breathless and begging for more.) (6.) "Hard To handle," (Ah yes, this song track is quite simply, my most favorite Rocker on this whole album. This Rocker definitely kicks a*s. This is REAL Rock n' Roll the way it was meant to sound. You have to hear this one to believe it. Rich and Jeff let their guitars run loose for this Rocker. Chris sings and belts this Rocker the way a frontman is supposed to rule a Rocker.) (7.) "Thick n' Thin," (This is another well recorded Southern Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff play their guitars like they are daring to push the limits of their playing. Chris sings this song like he is willing to help push Rich and Jeff beyond their limits.) (8.) "She Talks To Angels," (This is a beautiful acoustic turned slow Rocker. Rich and Jeff play their acoustic guitars like a warm summer breeze. Their acoustic sound is so magical and heavenly that it sounds and feels like a soft warm wind in the countryside where the hills and mountains echo its whining lifeforce.) (9.) "Struttin' Blues," (This is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Chris sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he can make his blistering lead vocals ricochet and echo off of Rich's and Jeff's guitars. With this in mind, Rich and Jeff make their guitars whine and screech like there is no tomorrow.) (10.) "Stare It Cold" (Again, this is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff NEVER let up in this Blues Rocker. I bet that their guitars were tired and screaming for rest after this album was finished. Chris' microphone must be filled with enough electricity due to the raw energy that ran through it.) and (11.) "Unidentified song." (This acoustic Blues number clocks in about one minute and seven seconds. This acoustic Blues song sounds pretty good but it was probably an aftermath or epilogue following the completion of this dynamic album.) Overall, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well recorded album that kicks a*s.

I would like to highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This legendary debut album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, THE BLACK CROWES have performed with their idols such as THE ROLLING STONES, AEROSMITH and JIMMY PAGE. However, THE BLACK CROWES have had their shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their whole career. THE BLACK CROWES broke up temporarily in the new millennium following the get together of JIMMY PAGE & THE BLACK CROWES. It appears that the Robinson brothers have been fighting and duking it out for many years like that of the Davies brothers of THE KINKS. However, The Robinson brothers would settle down. Chris Robinson's well publicized marriage and divorce to actress Kate Hudson would bring the Robinson brothers back together again and THE BLACK CROWES are in the process of releasing their first new studio album in five years. This new album should be out sometime in 2007. I really do hope that THE BLACK CROWES will stay together permanently this time. Rock n' Roll needs a great band like THE BLACK CROWES to remind Rock n' Roll of it glorious roots in order for Rock n' Roll to breathe and survive. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? So here's to you Chris, Rich, Jeff, Steve and Johnny. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Great album.......2006-02-05

This is a rare time that I've heard a complete album since the days of the early Van Halen albums. Every track on here is GOOD.

What makes The Black Crowes so great to me is that they combine my three favorite genres of rock, soul, and some blues and they do it well...

You got southern rock songs like Twice As Hard, Sister Luck, Thick n Thin... You got a great balld in She Talks to Angels... Hard rockers in Stare It Cold and Jealous Again... And you got possibly the most catchy song the 90's and that is the cover of Hard to Handle.

If you're a rock, soul and blues fan I suggest picking this album up... It might not be from a classic time period, but it sure is a classic album from start to finish.

Shake that money maker...........2006-01-15

The debut album by the Crowes, from 1990, has always been my favorite release by the Georgia rock band. They've had very good stuff since then, but to me, the first album just hasn't been topped.

It opens with "Twice as Hard", stating a message right from the beginning. This was a new band (then) that was here to show they knew how to rock and roll. In an age where hair bands hadn't died out yet, and grunge still had yet to hit the mainstream, the Crowes used their down to basics, Rolling Stones meet Skynyrd sound to hook fans everywhere of good, of fashioned blues rock.

The next song, "Jealous Again" was another hit, this one being the first single released. It is what set the tone and opened the way for the Crowes to build an instant fan base, that while isn't as strong today as it was in the early days, still remains.

Other hits are here, including "Hard to Handle", a revamped and kick ass version of the old Otis Redding song. Also found here is the ultimate ballad by the band, "She Talks To Angels". in an age where the power ballads were all over the airwaves, it was good to hear a true rock and roll force kick back and show the boys with makeup just how a blues tinged emotional rock and roll ballad is supposed to sound.

There isn't really a weak spot on the album, even once you get past the hits. "Sister Luck" has a bluesy, slow moving pulse....the kind that makes you wanna kick back and just savor your beer. "Struttin' Blues", "Could i Have Been So Blind", and "Seeing Things" all keep the album moving without letting up. "Thick and Thin" raises the decible level a little more, carrying on the pace set by "Hard to Handle", and right before they slow down into "She Talks to Angels". Finally, they top the disc off with "Stare it Cold", letting us all see that the Crowes weren't done yet.

All in all, if you like blues rock with an upbeat tone, or just good old time rock and roll, check this out. The Crowes use old formulas, but give them a fresh new flavor, and in the decade plus since the original release, have given rock fans a good alternative to the rest of the music scene.

Frank even put it on the album in a speech bubble "Is this Phase 1 of Lumpy Gravy?" and on Lumpy Gravy "Is this Phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?" We're Only In It For The Money and Lumpy Gravy Have a song in common, "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" (Just "Take Your Clothes Off" on Lumpy Gravy)

If you are a Zappa fan and you don't have any of these albums BUY THEM NOW! and listen to them, back to back to back.

For the money..........2007-04-09

In college, our "hippie" friend Lowell W... introduced our group to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Soon, I was adding Mothers LPs (They came on vinyl, you know) to my ecclectic record collection. So, what was this stuff anyhow? Political comment? Rock N Roll? It certainly was not Country & Western! What a puzzle! (However, it might have been poltical satire because Zappa seems to have written a song about my family friendly congressman before he was even elected. "Just have your fun, you old son of a gun, and drive off in your Lincoln..." So, Lowell up and writes Frank about what's it really mean anyhow and signs it Lo W... Now, Zappa was not one to waste a stamp on a fan. But, a few months later a full page ad appeared for the newest Mother's album in "The Rolling Stone." The headline read: "Dear Lo: We're only in it for the money!" and there was a large photo of the album cover and some other stuff. Well, we still did not know what it was all about, but I enjoyed the album. I cannot speak for the entire listings of the Mothers on Amazon, but "We're only in it for the money" is my favorite Zappa CD. I still do not know what the goofy thing is all about, but I think the title is telling the truth.

Zappa at his best, if you don't mind the baggage.......2007-01-12

Frank Zappa's best work is often weighed down with his insistent brand of humor, and this album, perhaps the best of his early period, is no exception. Some of his studio mastery is already at work with the story of an intruder in the studio somehow messing with the tapes weaving through the songs. And the acerbic look at the hippie scene is devastating. Anybody who ever thought about going to San Francisco with flowers in their hair should have been forced to listen first. And doesn't that sound dated; there's the rub - stuff like that drags down the timeless quality of this music. It becomes a "period document" instead of just a great musical listen.
But don't let that stop you - this is a textbook example of how rock music was already becoming a melting pot for every genre imaginable. And in this album, it's in the hands of a master. In multiple styles, brilliantly executed, the Mothers create a rich sonic landscape of memorable melodies, creative instrumentation, daring rhythmns, and superb playing. Don't miss this one.

Zappa's Finest Hour.......2006-12-20

Some of this album is snarky, hilarious satire (Who Needs the Peace Corps?; Flower Punk; Absolutely Free; the Idiot Bastard Son), some of it's unabashed, unironic protest singing (Mother People; Concentration Moon; Mom and Dad; What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body?; Take off Your Clothes When You Dance), some of it's comic relief (Harry, You're a Beast; Let's Make the Water Turn Black), and some of it's more avant-garde (Are You Hung Up?; Hot Poop; Nasal Rentetive Callipoe Music; The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny), but every part of this forty minute suite (pretty much what it is) is unadultred brilliance that'll make your head spin. The best Zappa album out there, at least out of what I've heard.

Some of the best music ever created.......2006-09-03

We know he was a genius. Beneath all the arrogance and cynicisim. Past all the 6th grade bathroom humor. Beyond the anger - there was in Frank Zappa a heart which cared for his fellow man, and the soul of a musician.

I didn't know what to make of this album when I began listening to it in 1968, till I heard The Chrome-Plated Megaphone of Destiny at the end. To my mind, this is a musical masterpiece equal to the works of any great composer.

Zappa was complex and didn't make it easy to see the beauty in his work. Don't take the bait - keep a very open mind, listen with your heart, and this album will reward you time and time again.

Who would have thought back in the Hot Boys' early days that it'd be Lil Wayne who not simply survived his older peers like Juvenile, but ended up thriving by the time he reached Tha Carter, vol. 2, Weezy's fourth album. He sounds more confident as an MC--but more importantly, he wields a genuinely impressive array of different styles (as opposed to countless one-note rappers), from the chattering, thuggish "Fireman" and the languid style of "Oh No" to the emotional, introspective "Feel Me." In some ways, he actually bears a resemblance to rap's other major "Carter" (Jay-Z), not just in his increasingly effortless flow but in his assertiveness as a leader. In other words, he's matured in all the right ways as an artist. His album is still longer than it needs to be--22 tracks, 77 minutes--but even the filler is listenable while the best songs, like "Receipt," "Shooter," and "Hustler Musik" help establish this as one of 2005's last great albums. --Oliver Wang

Although he was only 23 when this was released, Lil wayne has been puttin out album for 8 or 9 years, so his isn't a rookie. I honestly can say I've enver been impressed by what he has put out other than a song here and there, but after a bunch of good reviews and people tellin' me I had to check this out, I finally gave in, and I am very surprised. Claimin to be the best rapper alive (far from it but this album puts him heading in the right direction). I don't have many Cash Money albums (about 4), but this is a very ice album. With 19 songs, more than half are definitely worth checking out (#'s 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 22). Guests are minimal on 3 or 4 songs, and the production is good (that has been a constant with Cash Money releases thanx mostly to Manny Fresh). A must have album and one that shouldn't be slept on.

Ladies and gentleman, what is the big deal about these untalented posers? It's like the record companies aren't even trying to hire talent - they just hire whoever so that more innocent folks will go to that same record company and get a record deal.

But it's not just that - EVERY black kid at my school (NOTE: I am not racist) praises this guy, and that's why I singled him out. It's not just him, people also go gaa-gaa over other untalented drivel like Bow Wow, Chris Brown (the most overrated "musician" of the 20th century), and T.I. Whenever a black person at my school doesn't listen to what's popular, they are listening to - you guessed it - this guy.

Honestly, what is so great about him. In order to be considered a good rapper, IMO, you must have good, intelligent lyrics and an excellent flow (Some examples are Chuck D and Del tha Funkee Homosapien). Wayne here has neither. I know what you're thinking: "But he freestyles!" Well, you want to know how "good" of a freestyler he is? Take this verse from "Fireman":

"Come on mama let the Carter make ya, toss you like a fruit salad, strawberry grape ya".

What kind of verse is that?! I could come up with something better in my sleep. In fact, check this out:

After losing my Father back in October, I began reaching for things that reminded me of him. One of the things I reached for was the score for the Road to Perdition. Although my Father was gravely ill the day I took him to see the film, it ended up being a day not soon forgotten. I am listening to the soundtrack as I write this review. Fathers and Sons.

This soundtrack is amazing. Like Shawshank Redemption, Newman's music colors the film, reveals character, and highlights themes. I've listened to this soundtrack dozens of times, and I still love it. From the mournful "Piano Duet" to the driving "Lexington Hotel", this is a great purchase regardless of whether or not you liked the movie.

Wonderful soundtrack. If you've seen the movie, you can listen to these tracks and almost guess what or who they are written for in the script. I think Thomas Newman is the drummer of their composer family, because almost all of his music has the underlying ryhthms that make you tap to the beat (even though this is classically orchestrated music), with music that perfectly breathes the air of the times it was written for.

I own both the movie and the score, and I have to tell you, this film would not be half of what it is without this gorgeous, mellow, and sometimes violent and aggressive score. It really carries the film, and I think it even surpasses it some. Newman really outdid himself this time!

The Kinks' 1970 effort was the penultimate creation in a five-year, six-album burst that ranks just a notch below the great sustained rock & roll eruptions of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Stones, and Elvis Costello. Of course, the linchpin to this collection is "Lola," Ray Davies's irresistibly vivid account of the charms of a seductive transvestite. Its daring (for the time) subject matter aside, "Lola" stands as one of the great singles of all time. Add to the list the almost as infectious "Apeman," a slew of funny, shrewd, alienated-rock-star screeds ("Top of the Tops," "The Moneyground," "Powerman"), and a couple of memorable contributions from Ray's brother, Dave ("Strangers," "Rats"), and you have the Kinks at their raucous, righteous, quirky quintessence. --Steven Stolder

Meta-Kinks.......2007-05-28

I take a backseat to no one in my love for the Kinks. They were the first rock band that grabbed me back in 1965 with "Well Respected Man" and "Sunny Afternoon," and, thereafter, I continued to rediscover them. I caught up with Kinks in 1969 with "Arthur," then again in 1970 with "Muswell Hillbillies," and again in 1972 with the Kink Kronikles retrospective, which introduced me to the UK hits "Waterloo Sunset" and "Days" as well as oddly compelling achievements like "Autumn Almanac" and "Death of a Clown." I recall vividly the release of the single "Lola," which came after "Arthur." It was almost too good: Too melodic, too funny, too brilliant in every way. The album, which followed, left me a little cold, and I've never really given it much of a listen in the past 35+ years since its release.

Now that I've given this album another chance, I can't seem to pry it from my CD player. Is this the Kinks' best album? Better than "Village Green Preservation Society?" "Muswell Hillbillies?" It might be. Musically, it's their biggest, boldest statement. Lola is like the seed of a pearl, the album being about the creation of a hit single, first the desperate climb to the top, in "The Contenders," "Denmark Street," "Get Back in Line," followed by the single itself, followed by all the things that followed; hitting "the Top of the Pops," inspiring "The Moneygoround," where people make money off "a song they've never heard," and then the life of being stars, represented by two of the disc's highlights, "This Time Tomorrow" and "A Long Way from Home" -- two of the prettiest melodies Ray Davies ever wrote. Then, finally the sometimes funny, sometimes angry struggle to break free of the commercial monster they've created, in "Apeman," "Powerman," and "Got to be Free." Woven into this narrative are two of Dave Davies' best Kink contributions, "Strangers" and "Rats," which don't fit the story line precisely, but capture its mood, "Strangers" especially.

See? It's an album with a hit single that's about the hit single. And by the end of it, they're running as far away from the hit single as they can. This is meta-fiction, 25 years ahead of its time. But it's not difficult. This album has a little of everything that makes the Kinks great: Beautiful melodies, savage rock riffs, music-hall-style satire, and lyrics both clever and heartfelt. A true treasure. Why didn't I hear it this way before?

Almost Perfect.......2007-05-05

I first bought this album because the morning show that I would listen to on the radio in SLC (Radio from Hell) would sometimes play "Apeman" as an intro song. After hearing it about half a dozen times, I finally decided to hunt down this CD. I concur with the opinions expressed by many of the previous reviewers. This is a stellar album, and I am disappointed in myself that I hadn't heard it earlier in my life. I do have one complaint for which I am subtracting one star. To my ears, this CD desperately needs to be remastered. The mix sounds tinny and weak. For me, this is most apparent on the song "Apeman" - the reason I bought the album. The vocals seem to be buried underneath the the instrumentation. I bought my copy used, so perhaps it was an earlier release CD, and there has since been a remastered release. But believe me, you will not regret purchasing this album.

Brilliant concept album.......2006-12-19

I owned this LP when it was released and I played it non-stop. The songs were acted out in "the theater in my head": it took me on an exciting, sometimes poignant, emotional journery every time. This is a brilliant concept album. "Lola versus Powerman..." still holds a very special place for me in the exordinary Kinks discography.

Having grown up thru the British Invasion I can tell you that Ray Davies was writing songs on par with Lennon/NikCartney. The Kinks invented hard rockin', I don't care who agrees. RD in his prime could go song to song with the 'Beatlez' and his prime lasted longer than either of the aforementioned.

Absolutely the best Kinks album, bar none. It also is one of the greatest rock albums ever. No need to delete anything before you hit "play" - unless maybe you've heard "Lola" once too often. It also has cohesiveness and a storyline. Although I usually get tired of even good material, this one always seems fresh and gets a regular spin. (It brings back fond memories of when I managed to play "Top of the Pops" on my high school's PA system.) In my experience, whenever someone hears it for the first time they always ask about it (sometimes they think it's a "greatest hits" CD - altho Lola was actually the only hit). Bottom line: if you don't own it, buy it.
