Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

Since their Mercury Prize-winning 1998 debut, Bring It On, this self-produced five-piece have created their own rules. The third album proper from one of the most inventive British bands around, In Our Gun is brilliantly on target and off kilter. What's miraculous about their follow-up to Liquid Skin is that it manages to advance on the manic diversity of its predecessors. Gomez are a unique band--they have three distinctive vocalists in Ben Ottewell, Ian Ball, and Tom Gray, and an ever-fizzling chemistry where every member is made to count. The resulting emotional and musical palette is vast, encompassing epic grandeur and lucid intimacy, tenderness and anger. A quick check of their armory reveals Beefheart-ian blues, a beautifully cantankerous horn section, mariachi melodies, euphoric harmony vocals, blasting hip-hop beats, slide guitar that sounds like it's come up the Mersey via the Mississippi--and that's just for starters. --Gavin Martin

Gomez Is Great!.......2006-06-02

Since their debut a few years ago, Gomez have continually stretched themselves to make music that is both challenging and effective. These guys certainly know their way around a recording studio, using it as a means of filtering and expanding their ideas beyond what might be considered `conventional'. While they lack the `star quality' that causes others to be labeled visionaries, In Our Gun leaves little doubt that they are remarkably creative. For me, it took more than one listen to recognize the depth of this album's appeal, but the best stuff usually does require extra attention.

In Our Gun sounds like a marriage between Magic Slim and Radiohead. It's as if the blues played a game of `Telephone' with the 21st century, and it got morphed into something strange and new. The album features stunning combinations of harmonies, treated guitar, warped brass, electronica, percussion, and God knows what else, all mixed to serve the band's purpose, and all of it crystal clear and fluid - except when it's deliberately distorted. The album is extremely moody in tone, alternately reflective and boisterous. At times, it sounds as if an aural battle is taking place between analog and digital, ending in a bloody draw. Somehow, the melody always survives.

Unfortunately, the booklet doesn't contain lyrics, but the words are audible and intriguing throughout. "Shot Shot" is all honking octaves and raw nerves. "Detroit Swing 66" is a funky, syncopated breakdown with as many layers as a Vidalia onion. "In Our Gun" is a slow burn, feigning patience until it explodes in your face, while "Even Song" contains an ingenious balance of acoustic and electronic invention. "Miles End" is almost conventional in structure when compared to the balance of the album, so it also one of the easiest tracks to appreciate. In Our Gun is a dense, clever album that might put you off at first, but pay attention, give it a chance, and you'll find yourself immersed in these tracks. Every review I read about Gomez goes like this: "Hey, they won the Mercury Prize...." I also know that John Lee Hooker confessed that he liked the music of Bring It On. But who cares in the end? (...) What have you done for me lately? I am lonely! Plus the fact that Gomez was just this obscure band to us in America that sounded as if they were from New Mexico but were not. I mean these guys wrote "Tijuana Lady" right? I saw them play with the glam-outfit Placebo once in a dim hotel in Times Square and Gomez appeared like roadies in comparison. There was nothing exciting about them. They looked like unhappy students who were embarrassed by being on stage. From the American perspective we were wondering why those critics ever liked Gomez and Gay Dad.

The same people in Britain who built Gomez up in 1998, said they were crap by the time of their second album, Liquid Skin. It seemed as whatever the boys did wasn't going to be accepted as well. Gomez then put out a double CD of b-sides that wasn't bad at all. After four years in the thick of things Gomez seemed like a band that will not quit. With their three lead singers and progressive rock style and a tendency for studio trickery, it was difficult to put a name on this monster. You could just sit back and enjoy: if you don't like one song, you're bound to like something coming up.

So we come to In Our Gun with little expectations. "Shot Shot" goes from an acoustic folk guitar to odd English funk. Everything is in the right place, for real. Songs like "Ruff Stuff" and "Detroit Swing 66," are about coming off drugs and crashing. Looking desperate and looking for help. Gomez has a sense of creating narratives and creating personal emotions. The song "Rex Kramer" is apparently a song about a character in the movie "Airplane." This first part of the album introduces their eerie arrangements and superb musicianship. Gomez are as weird, energetic, and funky as ever.

Then in the ballad "In Our Gun" things slow down in a very melodic and political moment. Once things get quiet even this song breaks out in a bass guitar riff that gets the feet moving. "The Sound of Sounds" is probably the best track on the album that shows how nice Gomez can be to the ear. It shows one example how they are getting better as songwriters. This album is not without invention. It never lets up at 50 minutes long which seems like a perfect length for a CD nowadays. Gomez possesses much freedom and optimism. They may not be the most exciting band to look at. No one is going to be blinded by the frontman. We don't have to see the video or see the dance moves to get Gomez. We just have to let them operate on their own level and be in anticipation of a punch. In Our Gun may be the one that they are remembered for.
